Angels (Arabic: ملائكة‎ malāʾikah; singular: ملاك malāk) are heavenly beings mentioned many times in the Qur'an and Hadith. There is no standard hierarchical organization in Islam that parallels the division into different "choirs" or spheres, as hypothesized and drafted by early medieval Christian theologians. Most^[who?] Islamic scholars agree that this is an unimportant topic in Islam, simply because Angels have a simple existence in obeying God already, especially since such a topic has never been directly addressed in the Qur'an. However, it is clear that there is a set order or hierarchy that exists between angels, defined by the assigned jobs and various tasks to which angels are commanded by God. Some scholars suggest that Islamic angels can be grouped into fourteen categories as follows, of which numbers 2-5 are considered archangels. Not all angels are known by Muslims however, the Quran and Hadith only mentions a few by name. Due to varied methods of translation from Arabic and the fact that these angels also exist in Christian contexts and the Bible, several of their Christian and phonetic transliteral names are listed:

• Jibraaiyl/Jibril (Judeo-Christian Gabriel), the angel of revelation, who is said to be the greatest of the angels. Jibraaiyl is the archangel responsible for revealing the Qur'an to Muhammad, verse by verse. Jibrayil is widely known as the angel who communicates with (all of) the prophets and also for coming down with Allah's blessings during the night of Laylat al-Qadr ("The Night of Destiny").
• Israfil/Israafiyl (Judeo-Christian Raphael), who will blow the trumpet twice at the end of time. According to the Hadith, Israafiyl is the angel responsible for signaling the coming of Qiyamah (Judgment Day) by blowing a horn. The blowing of the trumpet is described in many places in Qur'an. It is said that the first blow will bring all to attention. The second will end all life,^[4] while the third blow will bring all human beings back to life again to meet their Lord for their final judgement.^[5]
• Mikail (Judeo-Christian Michael),^[6] who provides nourishments for bodies and souls. Mikail is often depicted as the Archangel of mercy who is responsible for bringing rain and thunder to Earth. He is also responsible for the rewards doled out to good persons in this life.
• 'Azrael/'Azraaiyl a.k.a. Malak al-maut (Judeo-Christian Azrael),the angel of death. He is responsible for parting the soul from the body. He is only referred as malak al-maut, meaning angel of death, in the Qur'an.^[7]

Islam is clear on the nature of angels. The functions that the angels perform vary, one of the most prominent of these functions is their function as messengers. The angel Jibraaiyl (Gabriel) is the most prominent messenger angel, as in Islam, he delivers the message of God (Allah) to the Islamic prophets. Angels cannot be seen as they are heavenly beings but that can take on different forms, including human.^[8]One well known example is when Allah sent the angel Jibreel (Gabriel) to Maryam (Mary) in the form of a man, as Allah says in the Qur'an:

". . . Then We sent to her Our angel, and he appeared before her as a man in all respects."

Similarly, angels also came to the Prophet Abraham in human form, and he was not aware that they were angels until they told him so. Prophet Lot also had angels come to him to warn him of the impending doom of his people. All angels praise and glorify Allah and they never become tired of doing this.

There are angels standing in rows, who never get tired or sit down, and others who bow or prostrate, and never raise their heads. "The Messenger of Allah said: 'I see what you do not see and hear what you do not hear. The heaven makes a noise like groaning, and it has the right to (or it is no surprise), for there is no space in it the width of four fingers, but there is an angel there, placing his forehead in sujood (prostration) to Allah. By Allah, if you knew what I know, you would laugh little and weep much, you would not enjoy your relationships with women and you would go out in the street praying to Allah.'" (Hadith)

No angel is able to disobey Allah due to the way Allah created angels. For this reason, Islam does not teach that Satan was a fallen angel, rather he was one of the Jinn. "O you who believe! Save yourselves and your families from a Fire whose fuel is Men and Stones, over which are (appointed) angels stern and severe, who flinch not (from executing) the Commands they receive from Allah, but do (precisely) what they are commanded." (Qur'an 66:6)

The Qur'an also mentions that angels have qualities that may be typified by the word wings: "All praise and thanks are due to Allah the Originator of the Heavens and Earth, Who made the angels messengers with wings, two or three or four..." .|Qur'an, sura 35 (Fatir) ayah 1^[12]

However, according to hadith collected by Muhammad al-Bukhari, Muhammad said that Gabriel had 600 wings;

Praise be to Allah, Who created (out of nothing) the heavens and the earth, Who made the angels, messengers with wings,- two, or three, or four (pairs): He adds to Creation as He pleases: for Allah has power over all things.

The preceding sentence does not imply that all angels have two to four wings. Most notably, archangels (namely Gabriel and Michael) are described as having thousands of wings.^{[citation needed]} The angels also accompanied Muhammad up to Jannah (Heaven) when he received commands from God. • The angels who violently pull out the souls of the wicked, ^[18]
• Those who gently draw out the souls of the blessed, ^[19]
• Those (angels) who distribute (provisions, rain, and other blessings) by (Allah's) Command.^[20]
• Those (angels) who drive the clouds. ^[21]
• Hamalat al-'Arsh, Those who carry the 'Arsh (throne of God)^[22], comparable to the Christian Seraph
• Arham, Those that give the spirit to the foetus in the womb and are charged with four commands: to write down his provision, his life-span, his actions, and whether he will be wretched or happy.^[23]
• The Angel of the Mountains ^[24]
• Munkar and Nakir, who question the dead in their graves. ^[25]
• Darda'il (The Journeyers), who travel in the earth searching out assemblies where people remember God's name.^[26]
• The angels charged with each existent thing, maintaining order and warding off corruption. Their number is known only to God.^[27]
• Ridwan is the angel who is responsible for Jannah (Paradise)
• Maalik is the chief of the angels who govern Jahannam (Hell)
• Zabaniah are 19 angels who torment sinful persons in hell

These angels take no pity on punishing them as they do what the Lord has commanded them to precisely and perfectly. A verse stipulates this:

O ye who believe! save yourselves and your families from a Fire whose fuel is Men and Stones, over which are (appointed) angels stern (and) severe, who flinch not (from executing) the Commands they receive from Allah, but do (precisely) what they are commanded.

An alternative view holds that rather than "defying" God, Iblis was acting in a manner predetermined by God.

Abu Ameenah Bilal Philips (born Dennis Bradley Philips on 6 January 1946 in Jamaica) is a contemporary Islamic scholar, teacher, speaker, and author, resident in Qatar.^[1][2] He appears on Peace TV, which is a 24-hour Islamic satellite TV channel broadcasting to many countries around the world.

Philips was born on 6 January 1946^[3] in Jamaica, but grew up in Canada, where he converted to Islam in 1972. He received his B.A. degree from the Islamic University of Medina and his M.A. in Aqeedah (Islamic Theology) from the King Saud University in Riyadh, then to the University of Wales, where he completed a PhD in Islamic Theology in the early 1990s.^[4] Philips comes from a family of educators, as both his parents were teachers and his grandfather was a Christian minister and Bible scholar.^[5]

In 1994 he founded (and continues to direct) an Islamic Information Center, now known as Discover Islam, in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.^[5]

He has also suggested that once violent conflicts between Muslims and non-Muslims can be better solved with education.^[9]

In an interview given, Philips accused the Australian authorities of "blindly following American allegations and unsubstantiated false accusations" claiming that investigations in the UK, Canada and Australia had found no evidence that he was in any way connected with terrorism.^[2] In this interview, he also pointed out that he had not entered the USA since 1995, characterizing media claims that he had been deported in 2004 as an "outright lie". Philips also called the statement that he was an "unindicted co-conspirator” in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing "really a joke", claiming that it was based on a "supposedly leaked report" of over 100 prominent Muslims who were never charged. In April 2011 he has been banned from re-entering Germany as persona non grata.^[10]

At a conference in Toronto during the city's Pride Parade on July 3, 2011, Philips briefly reiterated his view that homosexuals caught in the act should be executed in countries governed by Islamic law.^[11]

Imam Shabir Ally^[1] is the president of the Islamic Information & Dawah Centre International in Toronto, Canada. He is a Muslim activist, preacher and speaker on Islam and Muslims.^{[citation needed]} He is also a debater engaging in regular debates in different parts of the world.^{[citation needed]}
