Naxal activities hamper development in rural areas
Jharkhand, Oct 02 (ANI): Connectivity is of great importance for villagers across Jharkhand. People need roads, bridges and railways to get access to towns and cities. But, the naxals are opposed to this as they fear this will benefit the security forces. In Chatra district, several villages of Pratap Pur and Kunda blocks are surrounded by rivers. They urgently need bridges and roads.

Educating Rural India-Story of Humera
A Small Step towards a Big Leap... As the old saying goes, in the midst of difficulty lies the opportunity, Humera, a small village girl discovered a brilliant way to tackle with a common problem that she and children around her were facing -- their parents did not know English. These zealous children, students of Vidya Prabhat School, Bajpur, (a small village in Uttarakhand) wanted their parents to learn how to talk in English. Looking at the eagerness and enthusiasm of these children, Educomp R&D embarked on an initiative. The team of Educomp R&D, together with facilitators of Vidya Prabhat School, espoused the social cause of teaching the parents how to speak in English. A programme was set off whereby children became the torchbearers and took the responsibility of making their parents learn English. With the guided assistance of their facilitators, these children taught a new set of words to their parents every day. These words were selected in order to make the parents learn conversational English and objects, places, things that they came across in their day-to-day life. The response received from the parents was impeccable which demonstrated a true example of the maxim, 'You are never too old to learn'. In the words of RF Kennedy, "Each time someone stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope", the children at Vidya Prabhat School have set forth an exemplar. Just as a tiny seed ...

Rural Medical School Competes With City Life
This is the VOA Special English Education Report, from voaspecialenglish.com | http Many rural areas in the United States have no doctor. Some medical schools are trying different ways to treat the problem. One idea is to educate doctors in smaller communities and hope they stay. Dr. William Cathcart-Rake heads a new program at the University of Kansas in the Midwest. He says, "We need more docs. There's somewhere like a quarter of all of our physicians in Kansas are sixty years of age or older. So we need to be replacing physicians, too." He says medical students from rural areas now typically study in Wichita or Kansas City, two of the biggest cities in Kansas. "They say, 'You know, I really have every intention of coming back to rural Kansas,' but they meet a soul mate, they get married, their soul mate happens to be from a big city and we never see them again." The program is based in Kansas' tenth largest city, Salina, home to about fifty thousand people. Salina is about a three-hour drive from Kansas City, past fields of corn, soybeans and cattle. Student Claire Hinrichsen grew up in a town of about six hundred people. One reason she likes the Salina program is because of the size. There are only eight students -- the smallest medical school in the country. Classes are taught by professors in Salina or on a video link from Kansas City or Wichita. Students who complete the four-year program will then do their residency training in a small community in the surrounding ...

A Call for Equal Rights for Women Farmers
This is the VOA Special English Agriculture Report, from voaspecialenglish.com | http A new report says if women farmers had the same rights as men, more could be done to reduce world hunger. The report, "Empowering Women in Agriculture," is from the anti-hunger group Bread for the World. Bread for the World says equal access to agricultural resources would help increase food security and economic growth. Faustine Wabwire is the group's foreign assistance specialist. She says women constitute half of the agricultural labor force in not just Africa, but the developing countries as a whole. "And when you think of Africa alone," she says, "it's more than sixty percent of the total agricultural labor force being provided by women." The report says in most countries, women working in rural areas are more likely than men to hold seasonal, part-time and low-wage jobs. They also receive less pay for the same work. Ms. Wabwire says women farmers often cannot get seeds, fertilizer, proper tools, credit and, especially, land. She says in most of Africa, about eighty percent of the population is living in rural areas and they subsist on agriculture. Women make up sixty percent of the agricultural labor force and yet they lack access to resources, she says. She says land is one good example: less than twenty percent of all landholders are women. This is often because of legal as well as cultural reasons. She says women who have lost their husbands may have no legal rights over their ...

In Rural India, Medical Myths Spread
This is the VOA Special English Health Report, from voaspecialenglish.com | http Rural areas of India may have few doctors or other health resources. Instead, many people use traditional healers. These faith-based healers, or witch doctors, sometimes have strange theories about how the body works. In West Bengal, for example, some people have long believed that getting bitten by a dog leads to the birth of puppies. Dr. Kumar Kanti Ghosh is a psychiatrist. He helped document this belief in so-called puppy pregnancy syndrome for an article. It appeared in the Lancet medical journal in two thousand three. His interest started when a nine-year-old boy came to his health clinic about ten days after being bitten by a dog. The boy believed that he was pregnant with a puppy. And the boy's parents said he was starting to sound like a dog. A healer named Budheswar Singh says his mixture of yogurt and herbs has cured many people. "If the man is brought to me on time, I can give him my medicine and he will be all right." Sanjay Samui is a medical doctor who wishes people would stop believing ideas like this. "They are uneducated village people -- they still hold on to such superstitions," he says. He tells everyone that in no situation can a puppy be born inside a human body. The national government spends about one and a half percent of India's gross domestic product on health care. This is among the lowest rates in the world. It means faith healers are the only choice in some ...

Real Estate Millionaire Tip #18
Success.org Real Estate Millionaire Tip Hi, I'm Martial Arts Master Bill FitzPatrick And this is real estate millionaire tip #18 Because real estate prices can vary significantly from one geographical area to another, it is VERY important that you know these differences in prices. Obviously, obviously -- the SMALLER your investment area, the EASIER it will be to become an expert on values WITHIN that area. So, here is the tip You want to concentrate your investing to this SMALL, SPECIFIC investment area. For our purposes, we will define this small, specific investment area as an area with a population of 25000. In an area with 25000 people, there will be enough property that you will be able to buy and sell to raise investment capital. There will be many opportunities to acquire your 6 permanent quality properties to hold for the long term -- forever. Approximately 25000 people will define our small, specific investment area. 25000 is a guide Don't get stuck here Could the number be 20000 or 30000 or 18000 or 34000 -- SURE -- But, it probably can't be 8000 and it doesn't have to be 45000 Think 25000 -- And, in defining your area, if you can keep to ONE governmental district -- one city or ONE town or ONE neighborhood with ONE set of government officials and ONE set of rules -- as you will learn - this can be HIGHLY preferable Think 25000 If you live in the city, 25000 could be one neighborhood -- that's fine If you live in the suburbs, 25000 could be one town. If you live ...

Globalists Want Chinese-Style Control for Americans Under Agenda 21
From plans to restrict travel, cut automobiles, compact housing development and bring live/work "shophouses" to America and more, Agenda 21 is driving moves to contain populations in major US metro areas. Infowars reporters Aaron Dykes and Melissa Melton give an update on their investigation into control grids that will increasingly dictate our future lifestyles, and implement costly deterrents to individual freedom everywhere. While major metropolitan cities including San Francisco and New York are rolling out tiny micro-apartments, local and rural areas are working by stealth across the United States heartland to implement Agenda 21 containment policies by stealth. Under HUD grants driven by President Obama's Partnership for Sustainable Communities, regional governments are implementing "smart growth" and "sustainable" policies to force the population into concentrated development patterns that favor insider profits and "green"-branded solutions-- it is a "planned-opolis" vision for the future where the State is God and the individual is subservient to the "greater good. Build Your Own Lamborghini
Can you tell a difference between these two cars? If you can't, the answer is one is an authentic Lamborghini, the other is a handmade replica created by this man—Wang Jian. He's become a bit of an internet sensation; some are even calling him a hero. The 28-year-old hails from a rural area of China's eastern Jiangsu province. He didn't have much growing up, but he did have a love for cars—fast cars. At 16, he was already training to become a mechanic. [Wang Jian, Mechanic]: "I've always loved sports cars since I was a child. After growing up, I thought of making my own, when I had the circumstances in life and the knowledge. In order to realize this dream, I struggled to learn about this. When I had the right circumstances and the time, I assembled it myself and realized my dream." Like Wang, this car had humble beginnings; the parts came from an old Nissan van and Volkswagen sedan. It's modeled after the incredibly rare Lamborghini Reventon. Only 21 were made. And while it would fetch around $1.6 million in the US, Wang built his for only $9500. [Xu Lingxiang, Neighbor]: "I used to watch him assembling this Lamborghini all day, every day. At first, I couldn't figure out what he was doing. I could only see the frame and structure. Then he bought a lot of iron sheets back, and started cutting and drawing on them. I couldn't tell. I didn't know it was a Lamborghini replica until it was finally all finished. After seeing the finished product, I think it's extremely similar ...

While achieving tremendous success in the music industry as the bassist and co-founder of Pearl Jam, Jeff Ament has made it a mission to pay it back as an activist, philanthropist, and skate park builder. Growing up with humble beginnings in rural Montana, Jeff witnessed not only the tranquility of rural life, but also the difficulties that can often accompany growing up in extremely isolated areas. Luckily, Jeff found skateboarding, fell in love with it, and discovered the self-confidence that it can inspire. Remembering his roots and the positive effects skateboarding can have on young people, Jeff currently helps build epic skate parks in some of the most rural and deprived areas in the west. His most recent venture on the impoverished Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota is maybe his most rewarding project to date.

State of the City - The Decade of San Antonio: A Big City transforming into a Great City 1/28/10
Mayor Julián Castro presented his first State of the City Address on Thursday, January 28, 2010, and proclaimed San Antonio as a city on the move that will vault forward economically in the coming decade.
"This is the decade of San Antonio, the decade of our emergence as an economic powerhouse nationally and internationally," Castro said. "We'll get there by building up brainpower and opportunity, making vibrant our public spaces, and getting the fundamentals of city government right."
Mayor Castro told a record crowd of more than 900 business and community leaders that his administration will not hide from the city's most difficult issues, which include raising the educational attainment level of the local workforce and investing in the city's urban core.
"Great cities are defined by their downtowns. San Antonio must invest in downtown and make it a magnet for residents and visitors alike," Castro said. "In these next few years, we will put a new streetcar system on the ground, redevelop our beloved Hemisfair, and enhance our Riverwalk to breathe new life into our downtown."
On Jobs:
"The top priority for 2010 is creating jobs for San Antonians. Our city has fared better than most American communities during this downturn, but we must work to fare better. 20,000 net new jobs in 2010 is the goal."
Green Economy:
"We must embrace new economic opportunities. San Antonio can and should become a leader in the green economy by investing in green job training, incentivizing green manufacturing and leading the way in the use of renewables to meet our energy needs."

Thank you.
Thank you very much for that introduction, Carri. You've already shown in your short time wonderful leadership here at the Chamber. I want to thank you and Richard Perez and all the folks at the Chamber for your tremendous leadership in the city. I particularly enjoyed the opportunity to work with ya'll as we expand the Mentoring Matters initiatives, and make sure that most folks have had the opportunity to reach their dreams. And I want to thank all of ya'll for being here. Carri mentioned that there are over 900 folks here, and when they told me that yesterday, I thought that this event must have been billed as “C.P.S. Energy, Behind-the-Scenes.” [ Laughter ] Or something to draw folks here.
But really, I believe that there is tremendous energy here in San Antonio in 2010. I believe that 2010 marks the beginning of the decade of San Antonio. This is the decade that we will emerge as an economic powerhouse across the nation and across the world, a place that people are looking toward for leadership, a place that people are taking notice of, a place that is in perfect position to seize the opportunity of tomorrow. It has been my absolute privilege to serve as your mayor for the last seven months. These days have been exciting ones, they've been long ones, but they've been well worthwhile because of the work of many, many folks, a couple of which I'd like to just recognize right now.
The first is, and I'd like to ask them all to stand up, the best city council that we've had in years, our San Antonio city council, please, if you would, stand up. I see Councilwoman Cisneros, Councilwoman Taylor, Councilwoman Ramos, Councilman Cortez, Councilman Medina, Councilman Lopez, Councilman Rodriguez, Councilman Williams, Councilwoman Chan, and Councilman Clamp. Thank ya'll very much.
I was, of course, not in office for four years, and in that time we had one of the best mayors in America, Phil Hardberger, who did a wonderful job of laying out a vision and a foundation for us to build on, and I'd like to recognize him as well. Thank you very much, Mayor Hardberger, for being here.
[ Applause ]
Everybody says that we have the best city manager in America, and seven months ago I got a chance to start testing that for myself, and I got to tell you, it's the truth. Sheryl Sculley has done an absolutely wonderful job as city manager, and she's really, and I think that Phil would agree with this, she is the reason that we look so good being mayor. I hope she'll stand up and be recognized. Thank you very much, Sheryl, for your work.
[ Applause ]
I remember coming to a couple of chamber events over the last few years, and Nelson Wolff would always tell this joke about being -- I don't know whether it was him not being the old mayor anymore or the young mayor, or I guess being about the same age as Phil. These days I know that I'm the young mayor, and he's the older county judge but has been a terrific partner and collaborator and one of the reasons that our city does so well. Thank you very much, Nelson, for your leadership. I'd like to recognize you as well.
[ Applause ]
And then I want to recognize my own staff. I see many of them here from Robbie Greenblum who couldn’t be here today to Jaime Castillo, Frances Gonzalez, Jed Maebius. I see Christian Archer, Roland Garza, Sarah McLor

Collection Services - what happens to your waste after collection
Recycling collection services vary across the country. The factors that influence these services include whether the area is urban or rural, the different types of housing and the facilities available to process your recycling.
Broadly there are three scheme types:
* ‘Kerbside sort’ schemes where recyclables are sorted into their respective materials on the lorry at the kerbside;
* ‘Two-stream’ where paper and card is collected in one compartment and the containers (cans, plastic bottles and glass bottles and jars) are collected in another compartment; and
* ‘Co-mingled’ collections where all your recyclables are put into one compartment on the lorry before being taken to a Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) and sorted.

China warns foreigners to stop monitoring its pollution To see more go to www.youtube.com Follow us on Facebook (goo.gl or Twitter (www.twitter.com The Chinese government claims it's making serious efforts to clean up pollution. But as this horrifying report shows, much of their 'success' has involved simply moving their toxic industries out of sight. "It's risky, but we have no other choice: We only have this river," Wu Zhuliang tell us from his remote farm in South Western China. For Wu and his family their reliance on the river, which runs yellow with pollution, has had terrible consequences. They buried his son just over a month ago. He had been diagnosed with two types of cancer, Leukaemia and Thymoma, and had been in so much pain he said to his mother, "open the window and I'll jump out". The water from Wu's river was found to have levels of chromium, a known carcinogen, "200 times higher than the national standard". Ma Tianjie from Greenpeace tells us it's so toxic that, "simply touching the water, it could make your skin itchy. It's a very, very serious problem." All across rural China the same stories abound. The government is cleaning up the cities, but often the most toxic industries are simply moved to rural areas where regulations are lax. Chinese farmers are now four times more likely to die from liver cancer than the global average.
