We went past some really amazing scenary (see pic1) filled with rocks, it looked like someone had just dumped a load of boudlers on top of a mountain... very strange. Anyway we finally arrived in Daocheng and I went to the bus station in search of a bus to Yading, a very famous nature reserve with some amazing mountains. As is typical in China they lied to me... I ask in Chinese 'do you have a bus to Yading' 'no' (accompanied by a point at a taxi). Yes well I wasn't going to pay for a taxi for 6hrs on my own so I searched for some foreigners to share it with, and found noone! The only foreigners in town, were myself and the Dutch guy I'd taken the taxi with. Defeated, and unable to trek on my own, I gave in went back to the bus station, and bought a ticket to Zhongdian, leaving at 6am the next day. The Mammoth Bus Ride With some foresight I decided to write down everything about this 'oh so typical of bus rides' to improve your understanding of what it truly means to ride a bus in China. A small, picturesque old town surrounded by modern, bland construction amidst beautiful scenery, it would be very easy to draw comparisons between the two but for the fact that the atmosphere here is entirely different. The old town area is a small maze of winding stone paths and carved wooden buildings, some reconstructed, some genuinely old, like the Harmony guest house; over 100 years old, entirely made of wood and as cosy as an old English pub, thanks to the (much needed) stove almost constantly flooding the place with heat. At first glance it might seem like Zhongdian is set up for tourism, and perhaps it is going that way - the local authorities have recently changed the name of the place to Shangri-La (well, XiangLiLa as pronounced the local way) in an effort to draw more tourists up here, on the basis that the (entirely fictional) Utopian town in James Hilton's Lost Horizon might possibly have been based on a town in this region. For now, though, it still retains a pleasantly untouched feel, at least compared with Lijiang, with few other tourists around. Now, like a Sim City game, put China on pause and let the new US model go for 20 years. I think the two would be remarkably similar. Or, conversely, take China, somehow reduce the population by 50%, and let Hong Kong run the place. Let this Sim City model run for 20 years and, again, I think the outcome would be remarkably to the US Maybe I'm crazy. Zhongdian. Take Santa Maria apart, ship it to Colorado, and rebuild it on the outskirts of Telluride. Zhongdian has an incredibly beautiful setting: Tibetan peaks to the west, western Sichuan peaks to the north, lakes snuggled amongst smaller mountains just outside of town, ancient, authentic Tibetan Buddhist monasteries at each end of town, sitting at 3400 meters (11000 feet). The old town luckily lacks the Disneyland perfection like Lijiang and lacks the massive crowds of tourists and retains the intricately carved wood building facades and friendly shopkeepers. The only real down side is the massive generic Chinese urban sprawl outside the city. Overall I find it my favorite city I have visited so far. In the evening the villagers of Zhongdian dance traditional TIbetan dances in the main square. What probably started as a tourist attraction has turned into a big outdoor body exercise, full of fun, laughter and enjoyment, with the dancers completely outnumbering the few tourists.

Dbrainard's travel blog entry: "Here I am in an internet cafe in Dali with Lynn and Ryan with about 20 others...all of them young teen to 20 year olds playing internet games with earphones, all male and mostly smoking. Our hotel offered to pay our taxi ride to take us here, but we would have to get a taxi to return. Oh, taxis are only 10 yuan or about $1.20 for most places in the city. Our hotel is very nice...4 star, but older and on a major highway that is under construction...in fact most roads are under construction as China is definitely making a major investment in their infrastructure. We've spend a lot of time on the road in the past couple days...first going to Tiger Leaping Gorge...a raging river that enters a narrow spot that creates amazing rapids. It is the kind of place that river rafters would never in their right mind try to experience. The place was beautiful, but accessing it was a major climb down narrow slippery steps and returning was even more challenging. As I mentioned previously, the Chinese did not take etiquette training from the British...as waiting for others is not part of their culture....anyway between slippery steep steps and too many people, we felt fortunate to make it to the top. Then, we traveled to Snow Mountain...a beautiful place that has a lover's meadow ...

It was such a warm and friendly place and Haba was such a beautiful little town. But it was cold and time to move on as we had to collect our bags from Sean in Zhongdian or better known as Shangrila. We caught the 8:30am bus and sat in silence most of the way and just stared out the window at the beautiful scenery. We all waved a big good bye to Flip as he sat with his new found girlfriend. When we arrived in Zhongdian (or Jongdien) we cabbed it to the Tibet Hotel. Hey they have electric blankets. Here we checked in and sat for lunch before heading out to see what the fuss was about when it came to this town. I was actually beginning to feel rather cold so I thought it was time to purchase a new pair of cargos as I had no long pants with me or shoes, just my trusty sandals. I found a great pair of Levi Cargos (yes, I'm sure they were real Levi's NOT!) and after dropping our washing off we walked around town. The 'old town' which I believe to be nearly brand spanking new had the same feel about it as Lijiang. Give it a few more years to be completed and wallah, Zhongdian will be huge with the Chinese Tourists and their yellow peeked-caps. I'm unsure ...

We wound our way up impossibly twisting, narrow mountain roads. I use the term "roads" loosely, since what we had was more of a one-lane dirt path, covered with a nice layer of thick ice. No guardrails of course. And the methodology for going around sharp turns? Honk loudly and pray hard that there's nothing coming in the other direction. I kept saying to myself over and over as my mantra, "It's ok. The driver doesn't want to die either." On several occasions, while staring down into the vast abyss outside my window, I started liberally making promises to myself about making my life utterly wholesome and worthwhile and productive, if only I could continue living it just a little bit longer. We arrived in Zhongdian unscathed, if a bit wobbly-kneed. Despite being only five hours away from Lijiang, we might as well have entered another universe. Before we left Chengdu we had 2 uniquely Chinese experiences. We went to see the 'national treasure,' the giant panda, which despite looking impressive is arguably the most inept animal in the world. The women only get broody once a year and the men have one of the weakest sex drives of all animals; even when they do get it on there is a high chance of interbreeding and the panda sperm not working. They live in the rainforest which makes their black and white fur completely un-camouflaged and their diet of bamboo totally un-nutritious. To make things even worse, despite their size they have no defense against predators. Have they ever heard of Charles Darwin? Its only because of artificial insemination at this breeding sanctuary that they are not extinct. Afterwards we headed to the 4th Chinese food festival to try some national delicacies including battered crab, black sweetcorn, stuffed Yorkshire puddings in the style of a calzone pizza, and rabbit head. As we had driven our rickety bus along tiny mountain roads in the late afternoon, sheer drop to one side and landslide prone mountain to the other, I was thinking about mortality, the survival rate of China Bus users and Travelpod. As the sun began to set I was thinking about Dracula (having just read the book), and the bit at the end when they're chasing the Count through Transylvania, trying to stop him before the sun sets. I was thinking about the comparison, as our chances of survival were going to reduce considerably when it got dark, as there were no lights anywhere and the driver seemed reluctant to put his own headlights on. So as I sat there, trying to will the driver to turn his lights on, he seemed to share my concern and sped up. I was thinking that, should we survive, I would write all about it on Travelpod, making my metaphor clear and not forgetting to mention the film version where Keanu Reeves put on the worst English accent the world has ...

It has a huge Tibetan population and they say it's one of the places to see Tibet if you can't actually get to Tibet. (Not sure how true this is, with the Chinese government and all, but that's what they say!) On the way to Zhongdian we stopped at a traditional Tibetan house, which was set up in traditional Tibetan style - a two storey place, with animals and storage at the bottom, and living quarters on the second floor, up a ladder. We first had a look in the room where the family keeps an altar - it was interesting to see a picture of the present Dalai Lama there, because with the friction between China and the exiled Tibetan government, I didn't think it would be allowed. We then went to the small kitchen and dining area to try some yak butter tea. I had heard lots of comments about the taste of yak butter tea - that it's an "acquired taste", which normally means is tastes bloody awful. But in fact it tastes just like melted butter, but not as salty as I expected. They also add some barley flour, which makes it taste just like popcorn! I didn't think it ...

This town is the capital of Shangri-La County (Simplified Chinese: 香格里拉县; Traditional Chinese: 香格里拉縣; Hanyu Pinyin: Xiānggélǐlā Xiàn) is a primarily Tibetan county in northwestern Yunnan Province in southwest China and the capital of Dêqên Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture. It was formerly called Zhongdian County (Chinese: 中甸县Zhōngdiàn Xiàn) but was renamed after the fictional land of Shangri-La in the James Hilton novel Lost Horizon in 2001. I showed it to some people in my book and they said "Shangrili - la.. ya ya" There is nothing spacial there and no particular reason to go except it is part of Tibet and only part you can go without a permit. I came here with the intention of going overland to Chengdu but have decided not to go that way cos it is too hard with the language barrier. So far I have been OK but it is very hard to comunicate with NO words at all. The only ones I have picked up is xie xie-thank you. I couldnt find one of the bus stations cos,as usual, the Lonely planet map is wrong so I had to catch the town bus to the long distance bus station. I was lucky that 2 chinese backpackers got on so when they got off so did I. The woman at the ticket counter didnt know Shangri-la but eventually understood Zhongdian. There were no english signs and no one I could find who spoke english. The ticket was in chinese so I just walked around showing people and pointing. Eventually I was on a bus, hopefully the right one.On the bus were these small plastic conyainers which I thought were rubbish bins WRONG they were spittoons. At 3200m, Z'dian is a bit higher still than the places we have been previously. It's actually good for us to spend the few days here before our flight to help us acclimate to our upcoming Tibetan adventures. More than half a century ago, British writer James Hilton wrote a novel entitled Lost Horizon. In the book he tells a story: Because of an aviation accident, a plane was forced to land in a valley southwest of the Himalayas. To survive, several young men trekked a long distance. Later, directed by local people, they went to a place called "Shangri-La." It had snow-capped mountains, forests, gorges and lakes, and the beautiful scenery made people linger. What was more fantastic to them was the social conditions there. Many religions co-existed and people of various ethnic groups got along in harmony. The man-to-man and man-to-nature relations were properly handled. People were well off and friendly and the entire society was peaceful and tranquil. For obvious reasons, the Chinese have latched onto this concept and claim that Mr. Hilton based part of his book on the area surrounding Z'dian. You can't actually legally get to Tibet overland from China as a foreigner, rather one must apply for 7day passes and bow to state run tour companies who arrange for the state run airline to get you into Lhasa. Though steeply priced for an independent backpacker, it offers the opportunity to take a glimpse of a region that's been closed both geographically and politically to the world for quite some time. The cost of visiting Shangrila is bound to come down with time, though surely to be accompanied by some cultural loss. Hopefully I'll scrape enough money to do this trip soon. One gets a nominal sense of what Tibentan culture and society is like by visiting Zhongdian. The falt plateau landscape gives way to expansive sky views in all directions, truncated only at distant horizons by snowcapped mountains. What look to be like super-sized huts group together every so often to form villages on the plain. Hawks with 10foot wingspans speckle the sky above and land precariously on the many erected wooden grids outside the homes. Crops and animal skins are dried here throughout the season.
