Keeping the Great Lakes Great
North America's Great Lakes are a robust ecosystem that provides a wealth of economic and social benefits for the 40 million people who live on both sides of the border. But the Great Lakes are also at great risk. There are a number of stresses to the ecosystem: population growth and agricultural intensification, the introduction of aquatic invasive species as well as municipal wastewater effluents and industrial discharges. All of these threaten the Great Lakes and require sustained and focused attention. Learn more by watching our new video that depicts some of the challenges facing the Great Lakes and what Environment Canada and our partners are doing keep the Great Lakes great.

Lighthouses Around America - Lighthouses of the Great Lakes
Lighthouses have been a part of the Great Lakes maritime history ever since the early settlers moved westward and into the Upper Great Lakes region of the United States. Their light beams have guided ships to safety during the nastiest of storms, and at times the lighthouse keepers staged daring rescues that made them true heroes of the Great Lakes. In recent years, lighthouses have become major tourist attractions, and restoration has seen them returned to their original splendor. Every year, thousands of visitors hear their heroic tales and listen to the eerie ghost stories that seem to go hand and hand with the isolation and solitude of life in a lighthouse. Southport Video, producer of 17 videos of prominent shipwrecks, has just released a comprehensive look at lighthouses on the Great Lakes, from the history of lighthouses in general to close-up looks at some of the beautiful individual structures, all told through the voices of maritime authorities and augmented with rare photos, beautiful paintings, and footage of the lighthouses today. Some of the stories are amazing. There is the tale of how a ship rammed into the Buffalo lighthouse, knocking it over to a precarious angle. Another recalls a terrible explosion at Stannard's Rock, resulting in the death of one man. Another speaks of the lighthouse at Whitefish Point, knocked out of service by the elements on the night that the mighty Edmund Fitzgerald met its fate. All told, it is a captivating and educational hour ...

goodnews.ws Data from a NASA planetary mission have provided scientists evidence of what appears to be a body of liquid water, equal in volume to the North American Great Lakes, beneath the icy surface of Jupiter's moon, Europa. Credit: NASA. Extraterrestrial life: Great Lake on Jupiter's Moon Europa. Potential New Habitat for Life. Scientists Find Evidence for "Great Lake" on Europa and Potential New Habitat for Life. In a significant finding in the search for life beyond Earth, scientists from The University of Texas at Austin and elsewhere have discovered what appears to be a body of liquid water the volume of the North American Great Lakes locked inside the icy shell of Jupiter's moon Europa. The water could represent a potential habitat for life, and many more such lakes might exist throughout the shallow regions of Europa's shell, lead author Britney Schmidt, a postdoctoral fellow at The University of Texas at Austin's Institute for Geophysics, writes in the journal Nature. Further increasing the potential for life, the newly discovered. lake is covered by floating ice shelves that seem to be collapsing, providing a mechanism for transferring nutrients and energy between the surface and a vast ocean already inferred to exist below the thick ice shell. "One opinion in the scientific community has been, 'If the ice shell is thick, that's bad for biology — that it might mean the surface isn't communicating with the underlying ocean,' " said Schmidt. "Now we see ...

Old shipships of the Great Lakes 1920's to 1961
Take a look back in time with this slide show to the Glory days of the great cross lake passenger liners. Cross lake steamers were an important part of transportation in the 1st part of the 20th century. These luxurious ships where fitted with interiors on par with the Titanic. They ran year round in all types of weather. Voyages departed the ports of Muskegon, Grand Haven and Holland Michigan for Chicago. They carried freight as well as passengers and were known as "packet steamers" because of this. See the SS Alabama, SS South American, SS North American, the Northern Navigation Company United States, SS Cheboygan, SS Missouri, SS Milwaukee Clipper, SS Aquarama, Bob Lo Island Ferry and unknown passenger steamer; plus what I think is a 1920's high speed "Rum Runner" on the Detroit River During the failed "Social Experiment" Prohibition. See what happened to the SS Alabama,SS Aquarama, SS Milwaukee Clipper and the Bob Lo Island Ferry. The reliance on the Automobile and Air Travel spelled doom for these great passenger steamships. By 1961 the golden age of the Great Lakes Passenger Steamship was almost done. A victim of modernization. That left only the Milwaukee Clipper as the Survivor. But it too was victim of "Progress". The Milwaukee Clipper made its last revenue voyage in 1970. It is now a floating museum which along with the Canadian Pacific Railroad Steamer KEEWATIN on display in Saugatuck Mich. The Keewatin traveled Lake Superior. Both have rare "Quadruple ...

16x9 - Foreign Fish: Asian Carp's invasion of North America
It's like nothing you've seen before -- 60-thousand Asian carp literally jumping into the air as motorboats rumble down the Illinois River. It may be amusing to watch -- but Canadian scientists warn that if the spread of Asian carp isn't stopped, parts of the Great Lakes could look similar to the Illinois River. Québec History 4 - The Fall of Huronia
Québec a Nation History (Part 4) The Fall of Huronia The beginning of the Iroquois Wars The story of the Jesuits in Huronia and the genocide of the Huron peoples by the Iroquois - Mohawks. The fall of Huronia enabled the Iroquois to concentrate their subsequent war efforts on the French settlements in the St. Lawrence Valley. The wars were extremely brutal and are considered one of the bloodiest series of conflicts in the history of North America. The resultant enlargement of Iroquois territory realigned the tribal geography of North America, destroying several large tribal confederacies including the Hurons, Neutrals, Eries, and Susquehannock and pushing some eastern tribes west of the Mississippi River. It was the beginning of the beaver wars, also called the Iroquois Wars or the French and Iroquois Wars, commonly refer to a brutal series of conflicts fought in the mid-17th century in eastern North America. Encouraged and armed by their Dutch and English trading partners, the Iroquois sought to expand their territory and monopolize the fur trade and the trade between European markets and the tribes of the western Great Lakes region. The conflict pitted the nations of the Iroquois Confederation, led by the dominant Mohawk, against the French. It is during that war that occured the Battle of Long Sault and that Dollard des Ormeaux became a Hero.

Québec History 7 - Great Peace of Montreal 1701
Québec a Nation History (Part 7) Great Peace of Montreal 1701 The Great Peace of Montreal was a peace treaty between New France and 39 First Nations of North America. It was signed on August 4, 1701, by Louis-Hector de Callière and 1200 representatives of 39 aboriginal nations of North America. Commerce and exploratory expeditions quietly resumed in peace after the signing of the treaty. The French explorer Cadillac left Montreal to explore the Great Lakes region, eventually founding the city of Detroit, which had a promising future. Jesuit priests resumed their spiritual mission-based work in the north. The Great Peace of Montreal is a unique diplomatic event in the history of the Americas. Astonishingly, the treaty is still valid and recognized as such by the Native American tribes involved. Contrary to both the Spanish policy of enslaving and exploiting the natives or the English genocidal policies, the French chose to follow the path of reason in New France. While conflicts with the Native Americans were various and bloody and did not entirely cease after 1701, they never adopted the brutal tone of the English. On the contrary, Native American culture impressed many settlers, proved by the tradition of the coureurs des bois. Only the French, of all the colonizing forces in the Americas, did not try to exterminate the natives, enslave them or herd them into reservations camps.

Québec History 16 - Battle of Ste-Foy and Pontiac
Québec a Nation History (Part 16) Battle of Ste-Foy and Pontiac Rebellion The Battle of Sainte-Foy, sometimes called the Second Battle of Quebec, was fought on April 28, 1760 during the Seven Years' War also called the French and Indian War. It was a victory for the French under the Chevalier de Lévis over the British army. When compared to the Battle of the Plains of Abraham of the previous September, this battle proved to be a much bloodier affair in terms of the total number of casualties incurred by both sides. Pontiac's Rebellion was a war launched in 1763 by a loose confederation of elements of Native American tribes primarily from the Great Lakes region, the Illinois Country, and Ohio Country who were dissatisfied with British policies in the Great Lakes region after the British victory in the French and Indian War. Warriors from numerous tribes joined the uprising in an effort to drive British soldiers and settlers out of the region. Warfare on the North American frontier was brutal, and the killing of prisoners, the targeting of civilians, and other atrocities were widespread. In what is now perhaps the best-known incident of the war, British officers at Fort Pitt infected the Natives with smallpox using blankets that had been exposed to the virus. The ruthlessness and treachery of the conflict was a reflection of a growing racial divide between British colonists and American Natives.

"CITY OF LAKES" The Feature
What happens to a dream when it becomes reality?
Does it still exist somewhere, in some ethereal place, waiting to come to fruition again?
Could a fictional narrative capture an emotional state, and the true meaning behind a real, live event with more drama and conviction than a traditional documentary?
These were just some of the questions that arose when I took on the “CITY OF LAKES” project late last year. First, it would become an unprecedented attempt to combine a fully scripted, produced film with Melissa & Samir's real, live wedding. All with the intention of creating one, seamless film. Second, the live wedding and production would be shot entirely on-location in Udaipur, India over a period of nine days. Third, our skeleton crew would consist solely of live event filmmakers from across North America, who would shoot the live wedding events and production simultaneously & exclusively on HDSLRs, the Canon 5D Mark II and 7D.
“CITY OF LAKES” is as much a story about what it means to return to the birthplace of one’s ancestors, as it is an exploration of the Hindu faith, and the rituals of a Hindu marriage. Central to this is the Ganesh puja, which in simple terms, is a prayer over a fire believed to invoke the spirit of Ganesh, a great deity and protector, who can remove all obstacles from one’s path. The puja is performed several times in the film and carries great significance to the plot and characters in both literal and metaphoric ways.
Melissa & Samir had always dreamed of being married in India. We hope this film helps them cherish that dream. But it could not have been without the acting talents of Anubhab Saha, Sharon Chawda and Rushad Rana, who were consummate professionals and a joy to work with. It also could not have been without the support of our sponsors: Canon, who provided two pre-production 7Ds and a host of L-series lenses; Tiffen, who provided all of our lighting; and Cinevate, who sent us much needed gear and sponsored an incredible behind-the-scenes campaign viewable at Cinevate.com.
The challenges were immediate, abundant and frequent. At times, we were certain the film was destined for failure; I often wondered if the film was too ambitious to execute. But what resulted was due in no small part to a crew made up of live event filmmakers who deal routinely in making the spontaneous appear staged. We're proud to share Melissa & Samir’s ‘hybrid’ feature, “CITY OF LAKES,” which hopefully achieves more than a documentary, and perhaps at the same time, more than a scripted film.
There is a final question we hope you’ll find difficult to answer as you watch our film. In more ways than one, try to answer:
What is real?
Thanks for watching,
-Kevin

This Episode features impressions from 2 weeks Thailand during the rain season. We were basically just driving almost every day to get North as fast as possible.

Episode 2 Info:
0:01 - Pai
Pai is actually in Northern Thailand so we got there later than the edit would suggest. However, I wanted to put it into the beginning as it's a fun contrast to the quiet shots afterwards. It is somewhat of a Hippie-Mecca with lots of alternative tourists but also has this festival which seemed very authentic to us.
1:34 - Bangkok (Part 1)
We visited Bangkok twice on our trip. So there's a lot more to come in Episode 5. This time, it's only a handful of impressions from the rainy days.
2:35 - North Thailand (general)
After Bangkok is was raining a week straight. We were going into the mountains in the north-western Region driving on mud roads and fighting the water inside the car as it was leaking through on many spots. Camping is no fun, when it's pouring.
2:48 - Doi Inthanon
Doi Inthanon is the highest mountain in Thailand with 2565 Meters. But the peak is still covered with high trees so you don't really get any spectacular view. However, the fog within the forest up there made a great scenery.
3:00 - Refugee Kids
We accidentally drove in this area where there was a refugee camp streching over many kilometers at the Myanmar boarder. They wouldn't let us in but we could see many kids playing outside on the streets. Later we found a Myanmar refugee which told us alot about the region and why there are all there.
3:48 - Chiang Mai
This was one of the most fun cities we visited with tons of young native people studying there so we had some great nights going out. Luckily, we didn't film any of it.
After Chiang Mai we drove straight to Chiang Khong all the way North East at the Laos boarder to cross it the next morning.

Great Lakes Central Passenger - April 18 2009 - Owosso, Michigan.
Owosso, Michigan, is a city where people like to work hard, have fun, laugh, and party, party, party! In this video, a train of the Owosso-headquartered Great Lakes Central Railroad is traversing the westernmost railroad crossing on Owosso's Main Street. The train is on a run to the Soaring Eagle Casino in Mount Pleasant, Michigan, which is about sixty-five miles north. Once there, the train will drop off the gambling crowd and then, with its remaining passengers, it will head about forty-five miles farther north on a springtime sightseeing tour. By about 8:00 pm, the train will have delivered everyone safely back to Owosso where they can continue the revelry. The last car on the train before the pushing engine is what's called the "cattle car." This is where the professional partiers ride. Though they are difficult to see, they can be heard above the traffic, the engines, and the whistles and bells. There is history everywhere in Owosso. In this video, for example, the white-colored building in the background is the Power House Gym. For 128 years, though, the building was the Robbins Furniture store. Behind the building is a second building, which was where Robbins Furniture was manufactured. The Robbins Furniture Company/Robbins Table Company was where dining room extension tables with leaves were developed. Today, those tables are international collectors items. Robbins Furniture Company's advertising slogan was: "Its Worth the Drive to Owosso."

Great Lakes Conspiracy Theory Jesse Ventura
Great Lakes (aka, World-Wide Water Conspiracy) Aired: 12/3/2010 Original TruTV description: They call it "Blue Gold." Water is the new oil. Once a human right, it's now a valuable commodity, and corporations and super-rich oil dynasties are believed to be buying up water rights, controlling nations and populations. Jesse looks into the possibility of these activities finding their way to American shores and uncovers what may be a plot to literally steal the Great Lakes.

CRAZY CANADIAN GEESE
Canadian Geese take over front yard suburban home in Asbury Park, NJ. The Canada Goose (Branta canadensis) is a wild goose with a black head and neck, white patches on the face, and a brownish-gray body. Native to arctic and temperate regions of North America, it is occasionally found in northern Europe, and has been introduced to other temperate regions. This species is native to North America. It breeds in Canada and the northern United States in a variety of habitats. Its nest is usually located in an elevated area near water such as streams, lakes, ponds and sometimes on a beaver lodge. Its eggs are laid in a shallow depression lined with plant material and down. The Great Lakes region maintains a very large population of Canada Geese. In recent years, Canada Goose populations in some areas have grown substantially, so much so that many consider them pests for their droppings, bacteria in their droppings, noise, and confrontational behavior. This problem is partially due to the removal of natural predators and an abundance of safe, man-made bodies of water near food sources, such as those found on golf courses, in public parks and beaches, and in planned communities. Due in part to the interbreeding of various migratory subspecies with the introduced non-migratory Giant subspecies, Canada Geese are frequently a year-around feature of such urban environments. Contrary to its normal migration routine, large flocks of Canada Geese have established permanent residence in ...

Québec History 5 - The End of the Iroquois Wars
Québec a Nation History (Part 5) The End of the Iroquois Wars The beaver wars, also called the Iroquois Wars or the French and Iroquois Wars, commonly refer to a brutal series of conflicts fought in the mid-17th century in eastern North America. The Filles du roi or King's Daughters in English were between 800 and 900 Frenchwomen who immigrated to New France (now Québec) between 1663 and 1673 under the monetary sponsorship of Louis XIV, to marry and start families in an attempt to further populate New France. There exists an occasional misconception that many filles du roi were recruited from among the dregs of the population of Paris, and that many were prostitutes. This story, while untrue, comes about from the fact that a few Parisian prostitutes in the 17th century were arrested and transported to a penal colony in the Antilles islands.
