Professional wrestling career[link]

World Wrestling Entertainment (2006–2007)[link]

Paul began his career in 2006, working in the WWE developmental territory Ohio Valley Wrestling (OVW) under the ring name "The Neighborhoodie".[5] While there he was placed into a tag team with Shad Gaspard, and, calling themselves "The Gang Stars", they held the OVW Southern Tag Team Championship on two occasions.[6]

In 2006 the team was promoted from OVW to the Raw brand under the name "Cryme Tyme", with Paul changing his name to JTG (Jayson That Gangster). On September 4, 2006, a series of vignettes start airing on Raw, hyping the debut of Cryme Tyme.[7] On the October 16, 2006 edition of Raw, Cryme Tyme debuted and defeated two members of the then World Tag Team Champions, the Spirit Squad (Mikey and Johnny), in a non-title match.[8] In November 2006, at Cyber Sunday, Cryme Tyme defeated Lance Cade and Trevor Murdoch, Charlie Haas and Viscera and The Highlanders in a Texas Tornado match (as voted by the fans).[9] As part of their gimmick, Cryme Tyme regularly stole items belonging to other wrestlers and on-air personalities, and sold them to fans.[9][10] and sold false entry numbers at the Royal Rumble.[10] A few months later at the New Year's Revolution pay-per-view, Cryme Tyme won a Tag Team Turmoil Match against The Highlanders, The World's Greatest Tag Team, Cade and Murdoch, and "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan and Super Crazy, earning them a shot at the World Tag Team Championships.[11] They then competed mainly on Heat for the next few months,[10] although they made a backstage appearance at WrestleMania 23.[10] They also took part in the tag team battle royal on April 2.[10][12]

After Mr. McMahon's "death", Cryme Tyme plugged some merchandise and auctions on WWE's official website in memory of him.[10] On June 29, 2007, on an episode of SmackDown, Deuce 'n Domino (with Cherry) defeated Cryme Tyme in an inter-brand match tag team match.[13] While Deuce, Domino and Cherry celebrated their victory, Cryme Tyme appeared on the titantron and, in storyline, stole their car, taking it to Brisco Brothers Auto to sell it for parts chanting their signature catch phrase, "Money money, yeah, yeah".[13] On July 21, 2007, Cryme Tyme defeated the James Boys to win the OVW Southern Tag Team Championship for the second time.[6][14] On August 13, 2007 Cryme Tyme returned to their hometown of New York City on an episode of Raw from Madison Square Garden, losing to then-World Tag Team Champions Lance Cade and Trevor Murdoch in a non-title match by disqualification when Shad used a chair on Murdoch.[15] On the August 20, 2007 edition of Raw, Cryme Tyme stole Murdoch's hat and sold to a fan,[16] and the following week, stole Cade's and gave it away to a fan.[17] In the middle of this feud, on September 2, 2007, both Paul and Gaspard were released from World Wrestling Entertainment.[3]

Independent circuit (2007–2008)[link]

Paul, along with Gaspard wrestled at the Jersey All Pro Wrestling 10th Anniversary Show on October 27, 2007. Wrestling as "Crime Time", they defeated the "Dirty Rotten Scoundrelz".[18] Paul appeared in Derby City Wrestling (DCW) at their end of year show.[19] He was then involved in a feud with "The Mobile Homers" in DCW.[20]

Return to WWE (2008–present)[link]

Teaming and feuding with Shad (2008–2009)[link]

Cryme Tyme at a WWE show in Bakersfield, California in June 2008.

It was announced that Paul and Gaspard would return to WWE in 2008. Cryme Tyme returned to WWE on the March 31, 2008 edition of Raw, as where they defeated tag team Lance Cade and Trevor Murdoch in their first televised WWE match in nearly six months.[21]

Cryme Tyme began working with John Cena on the June 30 edition of Raw when they helped him interfere during JBL's match.[22] The following week, they again appeared together in a backstage segment when they vandalised JBL's limo.[23] After a house show match, Cena confirmed that they had created a faction and announced that it would be known as CTC, "Cryme Tyme Cenation".[24] Separately, Cryme Tyme started a feud with the World Tag Team Champions Ted DiBiase and Cody Rhodes, stealing their championship belts for a time,[25] then losing a title match to them at Unforgiven.[26] JTG entered early into the Royal Rumble match at the 2009 Royal Rumble pay-per-view in January, after cheating to get a spot instead of Shad. JTG lasted nearly 12 minutes before he was eliminated by The Undertaker. On the January 26 episode of Raw, JTG and Shad attempted to win the World Tag Team Championship from John Morrison and The Miz, but were unsuccessful.

On April 15, 2009, Cryme Tyme were drafted to the SmackDown brand as part of the 2009 Supplemental Draft.[27] They earned a Unified Tag Team Championship match against Jeri-Show (Chris Jericho and The Big Show) for SummerSlam after defeating The Hart Dynasty on the July 31 edition of SmackDown. On the August 6 edition of SmackDown, JTG pinned Chris Jericho in a major upset. But at SummerSlam they lost the match after an illegal partner, The Big Show, hit JTG in the face and Chris Jericho pinned him. At WrestleMania XXVI, Cryme Tyme competed in the dark match Battle Royal but neither won the match.

On the April 2, 2010 edition of SmackDown, Cryme Tyme was quickly defeated and lost a match to John Morrison and R- Truth. The loss of the match prompted Shad to attack JTG, breaking up the team. Their feud culminated with a Strap Match at Extreme Rules that JTG won. Shad would later win a rematch on the May 6 edition of WWE Superstars, and Cryme Tyme came to an end. Gaspard was later released from his WWE contract a few months later in November 2010.

Singles competition and lower-card status (2010–present)[link]

JTG appeared on the December 21, 2010 edition of WWE NXT, where he filled in as a mentor for Johnny Curtis as R-Truth was out sick. He was later announced to be one of the Pros for NXT Redemption, mentoring Jacob Novak. On the May 3, 2011 episode of NXT, he started his feud with William Regal when Regal called him a "Muppet" while Novak was calling out Regal out to a match, turning him heel. Two weeks later, Novak was eliminated, being the first to no longer be part of the show. In the 2011 WWE Draft, JTG was drafted to the Raw brand in the Supplemental Draft via WWE.com on April 26, 2011.[28]

On the May 24 edition of NXT, JTG had a feud with Vladimir Kozlov's rookie Conor O'Brian after he was pinned by O'Brian in a singles match. Afterwards JTG attacked O'Brian until Kozlov made a save and attacked JTG. He wrestled on the May 26 edition of Superstars as a face where he took on Curt Hawkins in a losing effort. He officially cemented his status as a heel on the June 7 edition of NXT Redemption when he attacked Yoshi Tatsu on JTG's in ring segment "Straight Outta Brooklyn". As he was going backstage, Matt Striker came out and announced JTG will face Yoshi Tastu, in which he lost. On the July 19 and August 2 editions of NXT Redemption,Kozlov beat JTG two times in a row with Kozlov also dressed like JTG in the second match. The feud ended when Kozlov was released on August 5, 2011. JTG scored his first win in months on the August 5 edition of SmackDown teaming with David Otunga and Michael McGillicutty to defeat The Usos and Trent Barreta.

JTG would then be managed by Tamina starting on the November 9, 2011 episode of NXT Redemption, and the next week. JTG lost against Jimmy Uso in the first week being managed by Tamina. On the January 16 episode of RAW Supershow, JTG made his first RAW appearance in months where he was defeated by Brodus Clay.[29] After multiple weeks of losing matches on NXT Redemption, JTG was approached by Alicia Fox who suggested JTG needed a new look and then offered to design one for him. After firstly being relectant to accept, JTG accepted giving Fox one week to do so.[30] The following week on NXT Redemption, JTG debuted a new look and then went on to defeat Yoshi Tatsu giving him his first win of 2012 in the process.[31]

Other work[link]

Cryme Tyme has done segments such as "Word Up!" on the WWE website for awhile as a tag team. After they disbanded, JTG did his own segment, "Str8 Outta Brooklyn," in 2010. In 2012, rumors speculated that Paul would be in The Marine 3 movie, which would mark the beginning of an acting career. It is unknown if this is true.

Christopher Keith Irvine (born November 9, 1970),[2] known professionally as Chris Jericho, is an American-born Canadian professional wrestler, musician, media personality, actor, author and businessman. He is signed to WWE, appearing on its Raw brand in addition to being the lead singer of heavy metal band Fozzy. He is also well known for his time in World Championship Wrestling (WCW) and Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW), and internationally in Canadian, Mexican and Japanese promotions.

Jericho has won 30 championships between WWF/E, WCW, and ECW - the three most prominent American promotions in the 1990s and early 2000s. He is credited as being the first Undisputed WWF Champion, having unified the WWE Championship and World Championship (formerly the WCW Championship) in 2001.

In WWE Jericho is a six-time world champion, having won the Undisputed WWF Championship once, the WCW/World Championship twice and the World Heavyweight Championship thrice. He is also a record nine-time Intercontinental Champion, and the fourth WWE Grand Slam Champion.[1]

Outside of wrestling, Jericho formed the band Fozzy in 1999 as their lead vocalist. Their eponymous debut album (2000) and Happenstance (2002) consist of cover songs and original music; All That Remains (2005) and Chasing the Grail (2010) feature all-original music. He also competed in the 2011 series of Dancing With The Stars, lasting until the sixth week. Prior to this, he hosted the ABC game show Downfall.

Professional wrestling career[link]

Early career (1990–1996)[link]

At age 19, Irvine entered the Hart Brothers School of Wrestling where, on his first day, he met Lance Storm. Two months later, he was ready to start wrestling on independent shows, making his debut on October 2, 1990, in a draw against Storm. The pair then worked as a tag team, initially called "Sudden Impact". Meanwhile, he took the name "Jericho" from the Helloween album, Walls of Jericho.[5] Jericho and Storm worked for Tony Condello in the tours of Northern Manitoba with Adam Copeland (Edge), Jason Reso (Christian), and Terry Gerin (Rhino).[2] The pair also wrestled in Calgary's Canadian National Wrestling Alliance (CNWA) and Canadian Rocky Mountain Wrestling (CRMW). In 1991, Jericho and Storm started touring in Japan for Frontier Martial-Arts Wrestling, where he would befriend Ricky Fuji, who also trained under Stu Hart.

In the winter of 1992, he traveled to Mexico and competed under the name Leon D'Oro, and later Corazón de León, where he wrestled for several small wrestling companies, as well as the largest in the country, Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre (CMLL). In CMLL, Jericho took on Silver King, Negro Casas, and Último Dragón en route to an 11 month reign as the NWA Middleweight Champion that began in December 1993. After leaving Mexico, Jericho would wrestle in Hamburg, Germany for six weeks as part of a tournament run by Rene Lasarteese.[2] His burgeoning wrestling skills also took him to Japan in 1994 where he competed for Genichiro Tenryu's Wrestling and Romance (later known as Wrestle Association "R") (WAR) promotion, facing the likes of Gedo and Último Dragón, to whom he lost the WAR International Junior Heavyweight Championship. He would also become a member of the heel stable Fuyuki-Gun (also known as Team No Respect) with Gedo, Jado, and Hiromichi Fuyuki under the name Lion Do, and would go on to team with Gedo to become the first WAR International Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Champions.

1994 also saw Jericho reunited with his former teammate from CRMW, Storm, as the Thrillseekers in Jim Cornette's Smoky Mountain Wrestling promotion, where they feuded with the likes of Well Dunn, The Rock 'n' Roll Express, and The Heavenly Bodies. In December 1995, Jericho competed in the second Super J Cup Tournament, hosted by WAR, losing to Wild Pegasus.[2]

Extreme Championship Wrestling (1996)[link]

In 1996, thanks in part to recommendations by Chris Benoit and Perry Saturn, to promoter Paul Heyman, and after Mick Foley saw Jericho's match against Último Dragón for the WAR International Junior Heavyweight Championship in July 1995 and gave a tape of the match to Heyman, Jericho began wrestling for the Philadelphia-based Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW) promotion, winning the ECW World Television Championship from Pitbull #2 in June 1996. While in ECW, Jericho wrestled Taz, Sabu, Rob Van Dam, Cactus Jack, Shane Douglas, and 2 Cold Scorpio. It was during this time that he drew the attention of World Championship Wrestling (WCW).

World Championship Wrestling[link]

Cruiserweight Champion (1996–1998)[link]

On August 26, 1996 Jericho made his first appearance with WCW, and on September 15, he appeared at his first pay-per-view show in a match against Chris Benoit at Fall Brawl.[6] In January 1997, Jericho made his debut for New Japan Pro Wrestling, who had a working agreement with WCW, as Super Liger, the masked arch nemesis of Jushin "Thunder" Liger.[7] According to Jericho, Super Liger's first match against Koji Kanemoto at Wrestling World 1997 was so poorly received that the gimmick was dropped instantly.[7] The following six months, Jericho worked for New Japan unmasked, before being called back by WCW.[7] On June 28, 1997, Jericho defeated Syxx in Los Angeles, California to win the Cruiserweight Championship for the first time. He won the title again on August 12, 1997, by defeating Alex Wright.

Jericho began his WCW heel run when he won the title a third time by defeating Rey Mysterio, Jr. at Souled Out by forcing him to submit to the Liontamer. After the match, Jericho assaulted Mysterio's knee with a toolbox.[8] In the storyline, Mysterio needed six months of recovery before he could return to the ring. Jericho then had a short feud with Juventud Guerrera in which Guerrera repeatedly requested a shot at Jericho's Cruiserweight Championship, but Jericho constantly rebuffed him. The feud culminated in a Title vs. Mask match at SuperBrawl VIII. Guerrera lost the match and was forced to remove his mask.[9] Following this match, Jericho began his ongoing gimmick of collecting and wearing to the ring trophy items from his defeated opponents, such as Guerrera's mask, Prince Iaukea's Hawaiian dress, and a headband from Disco Inferno.

Jericho after a taping of WCW Monday Nitro in 1998.

Jericho then began a long feud with Dean Malenko in which Jericho repeatedly claimed he was a better wrestler than Malenko, but refused to wrestle him. Because of his mastery of technical wrestling, Malenko was known as "The Man of 1000 Holds," so Jericho claimed to be "The Man of 1004 Holds." During the March 30, 1998 episode of WCW Monday Nitro, after defeating Marty Jannetty, Jericho pulled out a long pile of paper that listed each of the 1004 holds he knew and recited them to the audience. Many of the "holds" were fictional, and every other hold was an armbar. On the March 12, 1998 episode of WCW Thunder, Malenko defeated a wrestler wearing Juventud Guerrera's mask who appeared to be Jericho. However, the masked wrestler was actually Lenny Lane, who Jericho bribed to appear in the match. This started a minor feud between Lane and Jericho after Jericho refused to pay Lane. At Uncensored Jericho finally wrestled Malenko and defeated him, after which Malenko took a leave of absence from wrestling.[10] Jericho then proceeded to bring with him to the ring a portrait of Malenko that he insulted and demeaned. Just prior to Slamboree, J.J. Dillon (referred to by Jericho as "Jo Jo") scheduled a cruiserweight Battle Royal in which the wrestler who won would immediately have a shot at Jericho's Cruiserweight Championship. Jericho accepted on the grounds that whoever had to face him would not have nearly enough energy to wrestle two matches in a row. At Slamboree, Jericho came out to announce the competitors in an insulting fashion before the match started and then went backstage for coffee. An individual who appeared to be Ciclope won the battle royal after Juventud Guerrera shook his hand then eliminated himself. However, the winner was not Ciclope, but instead a returning Malenko in disguise. Malenko proceeded to defeat Jericho for the championship. Jericho claiming he was the victim of a carefully planned conspiracy to get the belt off of him. He at first blamed the WCW locker room, then added Dillon, Ted Turner, and finally in a vignette, he walked around Washington, D.C. with the sign "conspiracy victim" and accused President Bill Clinton of being one of the conspirators after being rejected from a meeting. Eventually, Malenko vacated the title. Jericho ended up defeating Malenko at The Great American Bash to win the vacant title after Malenko was disqualified after hitting Jericho with a chair.[11] The next night, Malenko was suspended for his actions.

At Bash at the Beach, the recently returned Rey Mysterio, Jr. (who had recovered from his knee injury) defeated Jericho in a No Disqualification match after the still-suspended Malenko interfered.[12] Jericho regained the Cruiserweight Championship from Mysterio the next night after he interrupted J.J. Dillon while Dillon was giving the championship to Mysterio. Jericho was again awarded the championship.[13] Eventually, Jericho decisively lost the title to Juventud Guerrera in a match at Road Wild with Malenko as special referee.[14]

World Television Champion (1998–1999)[link]

On August 10, Jericho defeated Stevie Ray to win the World Television Championship (Stevie Ray substituting for the champion Booker T).[15] Soon afterward, Jericho repeatedly called out World Heavyweight Champion Goldberg, in an attempt to begin a feud with him, but never actually wrestled him.[2] Jericho cites Eric Bischoff, Goldberg, and Hulk Hogan's reluctance to book Jericho in a pay-per-view squash match loss against Goldberg, which Jericho felt would be a big draw, as a major reason for his deciding to leave the company.

On November 30, 1998 Jericho lost the Television Championship to Konnan.[16] In early 1999, Jericho began a feud with Perry Saturn. The feud saw Jericho and Saturn instigating bizarre stipulation matches, such as at Souled Out, where Jericho defeated Saturn in a "loser must wear a dress" match.[17] At SuperBrawl IX Jericho and Saturn wrestled in a "dress" match in which Jericho once again defeated Saturn. Saturn finally defeated Jericho at Uncensored in a Dog Collar match.[18] Jericho's final WCW match came during a Peoria, IL house show July 21, where he and Eddie Guerrero lost a tag team match to Billy Kidman and Rey Mysterio, Jr.

The Y2J Problem (1999-2000)[link]

Jericho on SmackDown! with Mr. Hughes, his enforcer during his rivalry with Ken Shamrock.

Jericho alternated between WCW and a number of Japanese tours before he signed a contract with the World Wrestling Federation (WWF) on June 30.[19] In the weeks before Jericho's debut, a clock labeled "countdown to the new millennium" appeared on WWF programming. On the home video, Break Down the Walls, Jericho states he was inspired to do this as his entrance when he saw a similar clock in a post office. Vince McMahon gave him the green light to use it as his intro to the WWF. The clock finally ran down on August 9, 1999 in Chicago, Illinois while The Rock was in the ring doing a promo. Jericho entered the arena and proclaimed himself "Y2J" (a play on the Y2K bug). The Rock proceeded to verbally mock him for his interruption.[20] Later that month, Jericho made his in-ring debut on August 26, 1999 losing by disqualification in a match against Road Dogg on the inaugural episode of SmackDown! after powerbombing Road Dogg through a table.[21]

Jericho's first long-term feud was with Chyna, for the Intercontinental Championship. After losing to Chyna at the Survivor Series,[22] Jericho won his first Intercontinental title at Armageddon.[23] This feud included a controversial decision during a rematch in which two separate referees declared each one of them the winner of a match for the title.[24] As a result, they became co-owners of the title until Jericho attained sole ownership at the Royal Rumble.[25] Jericho's subsequent alliance with Chyna, coupled with growing enthusiasm for his ring work and mic skills, effectively turned him into a face.

Feuding and teaming with Chris Benoit (2000-2001)[link]

Jericho lost his title to the European Champion Kurt Angle at No Way Out.[26] On April 2, Jericho competed in a Triple Threat match against Chris Benoit and Angle at WrestleMania 2000 in a two-falls contest with both of Angle's titles at stake. Jericho won the European Championship by pinning Benoit, who in turn pinned Jericho to take the Intercontinental Championship.[27] This was the first of six pay-per-view matches between the pair within twelve months. Jericho lost the title the next day to Eddie Guerrero on Raw after Chyna turned heel to side with him. On the April 17 episode of Raw, Jericho upset Triple H in a WWF Championship match. Referee Earl Hebner made a fast count when Jericho pinned Triple H, causing Jericho to win the title.[28] Hebner later reversed the decision due to pressure from Triple H, and WWE does not recognize Jericho's reign as champion. On the May 4 episode of SmackDown!, Jericho defeated Benoit to become Intercontinental Champion for the third time,[29] but lost the title to Benoit four days later on Raw.[30] Meanwhile, Jericho's feud with Triple H climaxed at Fully Loaded, when they competed in a Last Man Standing match. Jericho lost the match to Triple H only by one second, despite the repeated assistance Triple H's wife Stephanie provided him in the match.[31]

At the 2001 Royal Rumble, Jericho defeated Chris Benoit in a Ladder match to win the Intercontinental Championship for the fourth time.[32] At WrestleMania X-Seven, he successfully defended his title in a match against William Regal,[33] only to lose it four days later to Triple H.

At Judgment Day, Jericho and Benoit won a Tag Team Turmoil match [34] and earned a shot at Stone Cold Steve Austin and Triple H for their WWF Tag Team Championship on Raw the next night. Benoit and Jericho won the match, in which Triple H legitimately tore his quadriceps and spent the rest of the year injured, and Jericho became WWF Tag Team Champion for the first time.[1] The team defended their title in the first Fatal Four-Way Tables, Ladders, and Chairs match where Benoit sustained a year-long injury doing a diving headbutt through a table. Though Benoit was carried out on a stretcher, he returned to the match to climb the ladder and retain the championship. The duo lost the title one month later to the Dudley Boyz on June 19, 2001.[35] That month at King of the Ring, both Benoit and Jericho were named challengers for Austin's WWF Championship in which Booker T interfered as the catalyst for The Invasion angle.

Undisputed Champion (2001–2002)[link]

In the following months, Jericho became a major force in The Invasion storyline in which WCW and ECW joined forces to overtake the WWF. Jericho remained on the side of the WWF despite previously competing in WCW and ECW. However, Jericho began to show jealousy toward fellow WWF member The Rock. They faced each other in a match at No Mercy for the WCW Championship after Jericho defeated Rob Van Dam in a number one contenders match. Jericho won the WCW Championship when he pinned The Rock after debuting a new finisher, the Breakdown.[36] One night later, the two put their differences aside and won the WWF Tag Team title from the Dudley Boyz.[35] After they lost the title to Test and Booker T,[35] they continued their feud. On the November 5 episode of Raw, The Rock defeated Jericho to regain the WCW Championship. Following the match, Jericho attacked The Rock with a steel chair. At the Survivor Series, Jericho almost cost The Rock, and the WWF, victory in their elimination matchup by attacking The Rock again, turning heel once again.[37] On December 9, at Vengeance, Jericho defeated both The Rock for the WCW Championship (unbranded and only referred to as the World Championship following Survivor Series) and Stone Cold Steve Austin for his WWF Championship on the same night to become the first wrestler to hold both championships at the same time, which made him the first Undisputed WWF Champion.[1] He fought both of the men he defeated at Vengeance on separate occasions and retained his title at the next two pay-per-views, Royal Rumble (vs. The Rock)[38] and No Way Out (vs. Stone Cold).[39] Jericho later lost the title to Triple H in the main event of WrestleMania X8.[1] After his title loss, Jericho became a member of the SmackDown! roster and continued his feud with Triple H.[40] The rivalry culminated at Judgment Day when Triple H defeated Jericho in a Hell in a Cell match.[41]

Storyline with Christian (2002–2004)[link]

Jericho's ring entrance during Raw.

Jericho was later drafted to Raw, where he won the Intercontinental Championship from Rob Van Dam (RVD). He then later formed a tag team with Christian, with whom he won the World Tag Team Championship, then renamed WWE Tag Team Championship, on October 14, 2002. Christian and Jericho lost the title in a fatal four-way elimination match, involving the teams of The Dudley Boyz, Booker T and Goldust, and William Regal and Lance Storm, on December 15, 2002 at Armageddon.

Chris Jericho and Shawn Michaels after their match at WrestleMania XIX in March 2003

On January 13, 2003, Jericho won an over-the-top-rope challenge against Kane, RVD, and Batista to select his entry number for the Royal Rumble match. He chose number two in order to start the match with Shawn Michaels, who had challenged Jericho to prove his claims that he was better than Michaels.[clarification needed] After Michaels' entrance, Jericho entered as the second participant. Christian, in Jericho's attire, appeared while the real Jericho attacked Shawn from behind. He eliminated Michaels shortly afterward, but Michaels got his revenge later in the match by causing Test to eliminate Jericho. Jericho spent the most time of any other wrestler in that same Royal Rumble. Jericho simultaneously feuded with Test, Michaels, and Jeff Hardy.[42] Jericho and Michaels fought again at WrestleMania XIX. In the end, Michaels scored the victory. Jericho, however, hit Michaels with a low blow after the match following an embrace.[43]

After this match, Jericho entered a rivalry with Goldberg, which was fueled by Goldberg's refusal to fight Jericho in WCW. During Jericho's first episode of the Highlight Reel, an interview show, where Goldberg was the guest, he complained that no one wanted Goldberg in WWE and continued to insult him in the following weeks. On May 12 on Raw, a mystery assailant attempted to run over Goldberg with a limousine. A week later, Co-Raw General Manager, Stone Cold Steve Austin, interrogated several Raw superstars to find out who was driving the car. One of the interrogates was Lance Storm, who admitted that he was the assailant. Austin forced Storm into a match with Goldberg, who defeated Storm. After the match, Goldberg forced Storm to admit that Jericho was the superstar who conspired Storm into running him over. On May 26, Goldberg was once again a guest on the Highlight Reel. Jericho expressed jealousy towards Goldberg's success in WCW and felt that since joining WWE, he had achieved everything he had ever wanted in his career and all that was left was to defeat Goldberg and challenged him to a match. At Bad Blood, Goldberg settled the score with Jericho and defeated him.[44]

Later in 2003, Jericho began a romance with Trish Stratus while his tag team partner Christian began one with Lita. This, however, turned out to be a bet over who could sleep with their respective paramour first, with a Canadian dollar at stake. Stratus overheard this and ended her relationship with Jericho, who seemingly felt bad for using Stratus. After he saved her from an attack by Kane, Stratus agreed that the two of them could just be "friends", thus making Jericho a face. After Christian put Stratus in the Walls of Jericho while competing against her in a match, Jericho sought revenge on Christian, which led to a match at WrestleMania XX. Christian defeated Jericho after Stratus ran down and "inadvertently" struck Jericho (thinking it was Christian) and Christian got the roll-up.[45] After the match, Stratus turned on Jericho and revealed that she and Christian were a couple. This revelation led to a handicap match at Backlash that Jericho won.[46] Jericho won his seventh Intercontinental Championship at that year's Unforgiven in a ladder match against Christian.[47] Jericho's seventh reign was short lived, as he lost it at Taboo Tuesday to Shelton Benjamin.[48]

Championship pursuits (2004–2005)[link]

Jericho teamed up with Randy Orton, Chris Benoit, and Maven to take on Triple H, Batista, Edge, and Snitsky at Survivor Series. The match's stipulation stated that each member of the winning team would become the General Manager of Raw throughout the next four weeks. Jericho's team was victorious, so they took turns as General Manager.[49] During Jericho's turn as General Manager, he stripped Triple H of his World Heavyweight Championship because a Triple Threat match for the title a week earlier ended in a draw. At New Year's Revolution, Jericho competed in the Elimination Chamber against Triple H, Chris Benoit, Batista, Randy Orton, and Edge for the vacated World Heavyweight Championship. Jericho began the match with Benoit but Batista ultimately eliminated Jericho.[50] At WrestleMania 21, Jericho participated in the first ever Money in the Bank ladder match. Jericho suggested the match concept, and he competed in the match against Benjamin, Benoit, Kane, Christian, and Edge. Jericho lost the match when Edge claimed the briefcase. At Backlash, Jericho challenging Shelton Benjamin for the Intercontinental Championship, but lost the match. On June 12, 2005, Jericho wrestled in his first match of the ECW One Night Stand pay-per-view event against his former rivalry Lance Storm. Jericho used his old 'Lionheart' gimmick, instead of his more well known 'Y2J' gimmick. However, Jericho lost the match, after Jason and Justin Credible hit Jericho’s head with a Singapore Cane, which allowed Storm to win the match.

Later that June, Jericho turned on WWE Champion John Cena, becoming a heel once again. Jericho lost a Triple Threat match for the WWE Championship at Vengeance which also involved Christian and Cena.[51] The feud continued throughout the summer and Jericho lost to Cena in a championship match at SummerSlam.[52] His last appearance in WWE on the next night on Raw, Jericho faced Cena again in a rematch, this time in a "You're fired" match.[1] Cena won again, and Jericho was fired by Raw General Manager Eric Bischoff, Jericho then turned on Bischoff. Jericho was carried out of the arena by security.[53] WWE announced that Jericho's WWE contract had expired on August 25, 2005.

Return to WWE[link]

Championship reigns (2007–2009)[link]

After a two year hiatus, WWE promoted Jericho's return starting September 24, 2007 with a viral marketing campaign using a series of 15-second cryptic binary code videos, similar to the matrix digital rain featured in The Matrix series. The videos contained hidden messages and biblical links related to Jericho.[54][55] Jericho made his return to WWE television as a face on the November 19, 2007 episode of Raw when he interrupted Randy Orton during Orton's orchestrated passing of the torchceremony. Jericho revealed his intentions to reclaim the WWE Championship in order to "save" WWE fans from Orton.[55] On the November 26 episode of Raw, Jericho defeated Santino Marella and debuted a new finishing maneuver called the Codebreaker.[56] At Armageddon, he competed in a WWE title match against Orton, defeating him by disqualification when SmackDown's color commentator John "Bradshaw" Layfield interfered in the match, but Orton retained the title.[57] He began a feud with JBL and met him at the Royal Rumble. Jericho was disqualified after hitting JBL with a steel chair.[58]

Jericho celebrates after winning his eighth Intercontinental Championship.

On the March 10 episode of Raw, Jericho captured the Intercontinental Championship for a record eighth time when he defeated Jeff Hardy.[59]

On June 9 episode of Raw, Jericho attacked Shawn Michaels during his talk show segment The Highlight Reel. Feeling the fans were cheering Michaels despite doing wrong and not caring for Jericho, he put Michaels through The Highlight Reel's "Jeritron 5000" which caused severe damage to his eye, thus Jericho turned heel for the first time since 2005.[60] This began what would be ranked by both Pro Wrestling Illustrated and the Wrestling Observer Newsletter as the feud of the year.[61] At Night of Champions, he lost the Intercontinental Title to Kofi Kingston after a distraction by Michaels.[62][63]

Jericho attacking Shawn Michaels' injured eye at The Great American Bash during their Feud of the Year rivalry.

Afterward, he developed a suit-wearing "self righteous honest man" gimmick inspired by Anton Chigurh (Javier Bardem) from the film No Country for Old Men.[64][65][66] In doing so, Jericho purposely shed many of the trademarks associated with the "Y2J" character, taking "every characteristic that made him popular, and strip[ping] those traits away from himself."[67] Jericho and Michaels met at The Great American Bash, which Jericho won after attacking the cut on Michaels's eye.[68] Michaels later announced that his eye damage would force him to retire, Jericho then went to attack him but punched Rebecca, his wife, instead.[69] As a result, they met in an Unsanctioned match at Unforgiven which Jericho lost. In the main event, Jericho entered the Championship Scramble as a replacement for the defending champion CM Punk and subsequently won the World Heavyweight Championship.[70] Jericho then successfully defended his title against Michaels at No Mercy in a ladder match. At Cyber Sunday, Jericho lost the title to Batista in a match. Eight days later, Jericho defeated Batista to win back the title in a steel cage match.[71] This reign would last until the 2008 Survivor Series, where Jericho lost to the returning John Cena.

On the January 12, 2009 episode of Raw, WWE Executive Vice President Stephanie McMahon fired Jericho, but he was rehired the following week after making a forced apology.[72][73] On February 15 at No Way Out, he was eliminated by his former rival Rey Mysterio, while Mysterio was defeated by Edge to become new World Heavyweight Champion.

Jericho had an onscreen feud with Double Team, Thursday, Sin City and The Wrestler film star Mickey Rourke and with four WWE Hall of Famers. He challenged and attacked Ric Flair, Roddy Piper, Jimmy Snuka, and Ricky Steamboat on various episodes of Raw leading to WrestleMania XXV. At the event he won an elimination match against Snuka, Steamboat and Piper. After this, Jericho challenged Rourke who was at ringside for the event. As part of the storyline, Rourke knocked Jericho out after a left hook to the jaw.[74]

On the April 13 episode of Raw, Jericho was drafted to the SmackDown brand as part of the 2009 WWE Draft.[75] Ricky Steamboat interrupted Jericho's Raw farewell address, which led to the two facing off at Backlash where Jericho came out victorious.[76] In his SmackDown return, Jericho participated in a fatal-four-way elimination match against Kane, Jeff Hardy, and Rey Mysterio. Mysterio executed a 619 on Jericho and then attempted to pin him with a seated senton. Jericho retaliated by throwing a chair at Mysterio and was disqualified. This sparked a feud between the two.[77] Mysterio pinned Jericho after a 619 at Judgment Day to retain the Intercontinental Championship.[78] Jericho defeated Mysterio in a No Holds Barred Match at Extreme Rules to win his ninth Intercontinental Championship, breaking his own record again.[79] At The Bash Jericho lost the Intercontinental title to Mysterio.

Storyline with Edge and Jeri-Show (2009–2010)[link]

Later in the same pay-per-view, Jericho and his partner Edge won the Unified Tag Team Championship as surprise entrants in a tag team match.[80] Shortly thereafter Edge suffered an injury and Jericho announced that he had a clause in his contract to allow Edge to be replaced and Jericho's reign to continue uninterrupted.[81] At Night of Champions, Jericho revealed The Big Show as his new tag team partner and Jeri-Show defeated Cody Rhodes and Ted DiBiase to retain the championship.[82] Jeri-Show would successfully defend their titles against Cryme Tyme at SummerSlam, MVP and Mark Henry at Breaking Point and also Rey Mysterio and Batista at Hell in a Cell.[83][84][85] At Survivor Series, both Jericho and Big Show took part in a triple threat match for the World Heavyweight Championship, but The Undertaker successfully retained his title.[86]

The 140 day reign of Jeri-Show as Unified Tag Team Champions came to an end at the TLC: Tables, Ladders & Chairs pay-per-view at the hands of D-Generation X (DX).[87] As a member of the SmackDown roster, Jericho could only appear on Raw as a champion and so DX intentionally disqualified themselves in a rematch to force Jericho off the show.[88] Eventually the teams had a match with a definitive finish, though DX still won, signalling the end of Jeri-Show.[89]

At the 2010 Royal Rumble Jericho was eliminated by the returning Edge, his former tag team partner, who went on to win the match. At Elimination Chamber, Jericho won the World Heavyweight Championship in an Elimination Chamber match, defeating The Undertaker following interference from Shawn Michaels. The next night on Raw, Edge announced that he would be using his Royal Rumble win to challenge Jericho at WrestleMania XXVI for the World Heavyweight Championship. Jericho defeated Edge at WrestleMania but during the April 2 episode of SmackDown!, Jack Swagger cashed in his Money in the Bank contract and pinned Jericho for the championship after he had been speared by Edge. Swagger retained the championship in a match against Jericho and Edge soon after. Edge defeated Jericho in a steel cage match at Extreme Rules to end the feud.[90]

Jericho was drafted back to Raw in May's 2010 WWE Draft.[91] He formed a brief tag team with The Miz and unsuccessfully challenged The Hart Dynasty for the Unified Tag Team Championship at Over the Limit[92] A month later, Jericho lost to Evan Bourne at WWE Fatal 4-Way, and the following night won a rematch where he put his career on the line.[93] On the July 19 episode of Raw, after being assaulted by The Nexus, Jericho teamed with rivals Edge, John Morrison, R-Truth, The Great Khali and Bret Hart in a team led by John Cena to face The Nexus at SummerSlam.[94] Jericho and Cena bickered over leadership of the team,[95][96] which led to him and Edge attacking Cena during the SummerSlam match that they won.

Jericho was punished for not showing solidarity against Nexus, when he was removed from a Six-Pack Challenge for Sheamus' WWE Championship at WWE Night of Champions.[97][98][99] Although he re-earned his place in the match[100] he was the first man eliminated.[101] On the September 27 episode of Raw, Jericho faced Randy Orton who punted him in the head. This was used to explain Jericho's departure from the company.[102]

Second return to WWE (2012)[link]

Beginning in November 2011, WWE aired six cryptic vignettes that implied that someone would be returning to the company during the broadcast of the January 2, 2012 episode of Raw. Inspired by the 2012 apocalypse theories derived from the Maya calendar,[103] the eerie videos featured two schoolchildren, a boy and a girl, with the boy prophesying that "a familiar force shall arrive to claim what is his and it will be the end of the world as you know it."[104][105][106] Jericho returned on the January 2 episode of Raw in a similar manner to his two previous WWE introductions; however, after physically hyping the crowd and relishing their cheers for a prolonged period, a smiling Jericho left without verbally addressing his return and did so the following week.[107][108] On the January 16 episode of Raw, Jericho made his in-ring return in a six-man tag team match, although Jericho had no physical involvement in the match; he hyped the crowd upon tagging in, before tagging out and abandoning the match.[109] Jericho finally spoke the following week to say, "This Sunday at the Royal Rumble, it is going to be the end of the world as you know it",[110] but in the Royal Rumble match was eliminated last, by Sheamus.[111]

Chris Jericho at WrestleMania XXVIII.

On the January 30 episode of Raw, Jericho interfered in a match between CM Punk and Daniel Bryan, causing a disqualification victory for Bryan and then attacking Punk following the ruling.[112] The following week, he explained his actions by claiming all the other wrestlers in WWE were imitations of himself, referring to many main-eventers and naming WWE Champion CM Punk as the worst offender by calling himself the "Best in the World".[113][114] Jericho was placed in an Elimination Chamber match for the WWE Championship and won a Six-Pack Challenge against the other competitors to be the final entrant into the Elimination Chamber match.[115] At the Elimination Chamber event, Jericho eliminated Dolph Ziggler and Kofi Kingston but was kicked out of the Chamber by Punk, which gave him a head injury and removed him from the match without being eliminated.[116] On the February 20 episode of Raw, Jericho won a ten-man Battle Royal making him the number one contender for CM Punk's WWE Championship at Wrestlemania XXVIII.[117] In a bid to psychologically unsettle Punk before their WrestleMania match, Jericho revealed that Punk's father was an alcoholic and Punk's sister was a drug addict which led Punk to his straight edge philosophy; Jericho also vowed to make Punk turn to alcohol by winning Punk's title from him.[118] At WrestleMania, an additional stipulation was added that Punk would lose his WWE Championship if he was disqualified. During the match, Jericho's efforts to taunt Punk into disqualifying himself were unsuccessful as Punk managed to beat Jericho to retain the title.[119] On the April 2 and 9 editions of Raw, Jericho continued his feud with Punk by attacking and dousing him with alcohol after his matches with Mark Henry.[120][121] At Extreme Rules, Jericho failed again to capture the WWE Championship from Punk in a Chicago Street Fight.[122]

On the May 7 episode of Raw SuperShow, Jericho pinned World Heavyweight Champion Sheamus during his tag team match with Alberto Del Rio against Sheamus and Randy Orton. After the match, Jericho, Orton, and Del Rio demanded a match for Sheamus' title at the Over the Limit, which they were granted;[123] Sheamus pinned Jericho at the event to retain the title.[124]

On May 24, at a WWE live event in Brazil, Jericho wrestled a match against CM Punk, during which Jericho crumpled up and kicked a Brazilian flag. Local police then intervened, threatening Jericho with arrest. Jericho issued an apology to the audience later on in the match, enabling the event to resume. The following day, WWE suspended Jericho indefinitely for denigrating the Brazilian flag while also issuing an apology to the Brazilian government and people. Later that day, WWE amended Jericho's suspension to 30 days.[125][126]

Personal life[link]

His father Ted Irvine is a former National Hockey League (NHL) player.[1] Though he was born in the prominent Long Island neighborhood of Manhasset, New York, Irvine was raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba.[143] Vince McMahon felt that by introducing him as "born in Manhasset, New York", American fans would be more likely to get behind him.[144]

Irvine and his wife Jessica have three children - a son named Ash Edward Irvine, who was born on September 24, 2003 and twin daughters.[145][146]

Irvine has two tattoos on his left hand. The first is his wedding band while the second is the letter 'F' on the back of his hand, representing Fozzy, a band he has been lead vocalist for since 1999.

Irvine is a born again Christian.[147] On July 5, 2004, Irvine was awarded Manitoba's The Order of the Buffalo Hunt, for his achievements in wrestling and his commitment to working with underprivileged children.[148] The award has previously been given to Pope John Paul II, former Chicago mayor Richard J. Daley, Jimmy Carter, Desmond Tutu, and Mother Teresa.[148][149]

On February 7, 2009, Irvine appeared to have punched a fan after she spat at him with fans outside Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre in Victoria, British Columbia after a live event. Video footage, however, clearly showed he did not make contact with the woman. As a result of the incident, police detained them, but released them without charge.[150] Police later announced that they would not press charges against anyone in the brawl as it was "hard to determine who provoked who".[151]

On January 27, 2010, Irvine and fellow wrestler Gregory Helms were arrested in Fort Mitchell, Kentucky after leaving a bar. A police report stated that Helms punched Jericho and the other passengers in the cab.[152]

In January 2012, It was announced that Jericho (along with New York Jets quarterback Tim Tebow and Atlanta Braves third baseman Chipper Jones) became co-owner of a new sports training facility in Tampa, Florida called D1 Sports Training and Therapy.[153]

Jericho as Intercontinental Champion in June 2009; his nine reigns are a WWE record.
  • Canadian Rocky Mountain Wrestling
    • CRMW Heavyweight Championship (1 time)[4]
    • CRMW North American Tag Team Championship (2 times) – with Lance Storm[4]

1 ^ Despite still using the NWA initials, Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre is no longer a member of the National Wrestling Alliance. As a result, the NWA doesn't recognize or sanction this championship.
2 ^ Both reigns were won during and right after The Invasion with the second reign being the unification with the WWF Championship and becoming the first ever WWF Undisputed Champion.[1]
3 ^ Jericho held the title jointly with Chyna during his second reign.
4 ^ After Edge suffered an injury, Jericho chose Big Show as a replacement without interrupting the championship reign.
5 ^ Jericho's reign occurred after unifying the WWF Championship and the WCW World Heavyweight Championship, making him the first ever Undisputed WWF Champion.

Cryme Tyme was a Face professional wrestling tag team that was signed to WWE.

The team consisted of JTG (born Jayson Paul on December 10, 1984)[3][4] and Shad (born Shad Chad Javier Romane Chittick Gaspard on January 13, 1981),[5] an over-the-top parody of stereotypical street thugs.[6]

Contents

Early lives[link]

Of Haitian and Curaçaon descent, Shad Gaspard was born in Brooklyn, New York.[7][8] Shad is the son of Benjamin Gaspard, a former street enforcer for street gangs and personal security guard in the early 1970s, who now owns Mcfay Contracting Inc. Shad is the third of six siblings.[7]

At five years of age Gaspard's father began training him in boxing and at age eight he began training in a mixture of different martial arts, developing into a successful amateur fighter and earning the nickname "Beast" from his mother. By sixteen, Gaspard began prize fighting for promoter “Hardbody Harrison”,[7] a former World Championship Wrestling wrestler and FX Tough Man Champion, in bar fighting tournaments such as Boxing, Kickboxing, Mixed Martial Arts (MMA), and tough man competitions.[7] Even though Gaspard was only sixteen years old, he competed against adults who were older than he was by five to twenty years.[7] Gaspard holds won-loss records as a No Holds Barred fighter (35–7) and an amateur boxer (57–26).[7]

Gaspard was extensively involved in athletics during his high school years, specializing in wrestling, track, and basketball.[7][9] After high school, he continued to play basketball at Georgia Perimeter College,[7] and after leaving, he became a bodyguard for several rappers and actors, including Puff Daddy, Cuba Gooding, Jr., and Mike Tyson.[7]

History[link]

Ohio Valley Wrestling (2006–2007)[link]

Gaspard qualified for the finals of the reality television program Tough Enough 2 in 2002, but was disqualified and replaced after failing a physical.[9] He was recruited by WWE talent scout Tom Prichard and trained with Sgt Dwayne Bruce for six months[10] before debuting in Ohio Valley Wrestling (OVW) under the ring name Da Beast.[11] He acted as part of the stable Bolin Services, acting as an enforcer.

JTG, meanwhile had debuted as Just Too Good in OVW and after two matches was repackaged as The Neighborhoodie and placed into a tag team with Gaspard, under his own name, that later used the name The Gang Stars. In OVW, they held the OVW Southern Tag Team Championship, defeating Roadkill and Kasey James on May 24, 2006 in their first match as a team. After they won the championships, they entered into a feud with CM Punk who teamed up with Kane to defeat them and Simon Dean in a handicap match. Punk and Kane won a title match but by disqualification, so the championships did not change hands. They retained the belts in a gauntlet match but later in the month lost the belts to Punk and Seth Skyfire on July 28. The following day they lost a Number One Contendership to The Untouchables (Dice Domino and Deuce Shade).[12] The following year the team returned to OVW, this time under the name Cryme Tyme, and regained the OVW Tag Team Championship on July 21 from The James Boys (KC James and Kassidy James). They lost the belts back to them the following day.[13]

World Wrestling Entertainment (2006–2007)[link]

In late 2006, WWE promoted The Gang Stars to the main Raw brand roster, starting by having them work live events and dark matches. On the September 4 episode of Raw, vignettes began airing to promote the debut of the team, now dubbed Cryme Tyme, showing them "training" for their pending debut on the show.[14] Before the vignettes aired WWE placed a statement on their website, WWE.com, stating:[6]

Tonight a new tag team, Cryme Tyme, will be introduced to the RAW audience. In an effort to humor and entertain our fans the tag team known as Cryme Tyme will be parodying racial stereotypes.

Shad Gaspard and JTG do outlandish, outrageous "stunts" to ready themselves for tag team action on RAW. This attempt at Saturday Night Live like humor is bound to entertain audiences of all ethnic derivations.

We hope you enjoy the weekly adventures of Cryme Tyme.

The vignettes, which aired weekly, featured Cryme Tyme robbing people while an (overly and stereotypically uncool sounding) announcer dubbed their actions "training exercises" designed to work on things like "speed", "agility", "drive", "endurance", and "intensity".[15][16] Cryme Tyme wrestled as fan favorites at live events and in dark matches, finally making their television debut, defeating Johnny and Mikey of the Spirit Squad on the October 16 episode of Raw.[17]

After arriving on Raw they were depicted covertly stealing things—such as Jerry Lawler's laptop,[18] and a plasma screen TV[19]—during interviews and while celebrating wins with the announce team.

On November 5, the team made their pay-per-view debut at Cyber Sunday, defeating Lance Cade and Trevor Murdoch, The Highlanders (Rory and Robbie McAllister), and Charlie Haas and Viscera in a four team tornado tag team match.[20] Later that same month they were featured in a Raw segment that parodied Michael Richards's "Laugh Factory incident".[21] In the skit, a wrestler (Nick Berk)—acting as a stand in for Richards—recreated the scene of the incident by using racial slurs and insults until Cryme Tyme confronted him on stage. Nervous, he offered an apology, but Gaspard kicked him in the head and JTG made a Seinfeld-esque joke, saying "What's the deal with the Bloods and the Crips? Can't they all just get along?". This event was the beginning of a series of vignettes and skits featuring Cryme Tyme interacting with different, unexpected audiences.[22][23]

Around the same time they began a feud with The World's Greatest Tag Team (Shelton Benjamin and Charlie Haas), during which Benjamin began to express disgust with Cryme Tyme's antics, calling them offensive and harmful to the black community.[22] During the storyline Haas started "acting black", but after the World's Greatest Tag Team handed Cryme Tyme their first loss on the January 29, 2007 episode of Raw,[24] the program was dropped, with Cryme Tyme appearing mainly on Raw's sister show Heat, only appearing on Raw in backstage segments.

On July 21, 2007, Cryme Tyme appeared at an Ohio Valley Wrestling event and wrestled the OVW Southern Tag Team Champion James Boys (K.C. and Kassidy James), taking the title.[25] At the next weeks television tapings the James Boys were again announced as Champions, with no explanation of how they won the title back being offered.[citation needed]

The duo returned to Raw in July and started a gimmick where they would take items and auction them off to the crowd.[26] This led to a feud with the World Tag Team Champions Lance Cade and Trevor Murdoch,[27][28] but both JTG and Shad were released from their WWE contracts for undisclosed reasons on September 2, 2007 before the feud was resolved.[3]

Independent circuit (2007–2008)[link]

After leaving WWE they continued teaming together on the professional wrestling independent circuit, using the alternate spelling "Crime Time". They appeared at Jersey All Pro Wrestling's 10th Anniversary Show, defeating the Dirty Rotten Scoundrelz.[29] They left the promotion undefeated after defeating Style & Finesse (Mike Donovan and Rob Vegas) in January 2008's Reclaiming Hudson.[30]

The duo also made several solo appearances on the solo circuit. Gaspard lost to Psicosis at a Pro Wrestling Alliance event in September while his partner, appearing under the altered name Jay-TG made several appearances on the Derby City Wrestling television programme.

Return to WWE (2008–2010)[link]

Cryme Tyme in 2008 during Raw, looking at Mr. McMahon's million dollars

JTG and Shad returned to WWE under the "Cryme Tyme" name on the March 31 edition of Raw in 2008, defeating Lance Cade and Trevor Murdoch.[31] Cryme Tyme began working with John Cena on the June 30 edition of Raw when they helped him interfere during John "Bradshaw" Layfield's match.[32] The following week, they again appeared together in a segment when they vandalized JBL's limo.[33] After a live event match, Cena confirmed that they had created a faction and announced that it was called CTC or "Cryme Tyme Cenation".[34] Separately, Cryme Tyme started a feud with the World Tag Team Champions Cody Rhodes and Ted DiBiase, stealing their championship belts for a time,[35] then losing a title match to them at Unforgiven.[36] The CTC quietly separated after Cena's injury.

On April 15, 2009, Cryme Tyme were drafted to the SmackDown brand as part of the 2009 Supplemental Draft.[37] Eve Torres later became their valet, accompanying them to the ring and appearing in backstage segments with them. Later, Eve and Cryme Tyme got into a feud with The Hart Dynasty. They competed in six person mixed tag teaam, singles and tag team action. On the July 31 episode of SmackDown, they became the number one contenders to the Unified WWE Tag Team Championship by defeating The Hart Dynasty, but tag team champions Jeri-Show (Chris Jericho and Big Show) beat them at SummerSlam.

Cryme Tyme was supposed to compete for Team SmackDown at WWE Bragging Rights. However, due to health concerns regarding Gaspard, Cryme Tyme (along with most of the SmackDown team) was replaced by Matt Hardy, R-Truth, The Hart Dynasty and Finlay. On the March 5 episode of SmackDown!, they had a No.1 Contender's match to fight The Miz and The Big Show for the Unified WWE Tag Team Championships against John Morrison and R-Truth and The Hart Dynasty, however they failed to win the match. The following week on SmackDown, Cryme Tyme were facing Hart Dynasty but were attacked by The Undertaker.[38]

At WrestleMania XXVI, both members of Cryme Tyme competed in the dark match battle royal, where JTG would be eliminated by Shad. Just days later on SmackDown!, after a quick loss to R-Truth and John Morrison, Shad was enraged and attacked JTG for not coming to his rescue in the match turning Shad heel for the first time in his WWE brand career and second time in his wrestling career. (The first being his debut in OVW). Backstage after the match during an interview, Shad told Josh Mathews, "No more Time... no more Cryme Tyme...this is my time." The next week, Shad came to the ring and announced that he was done with Cryme Tyme and announced again that it was his time. Afterwards, an enraged JTG came out ready to fight Shad, but got kicked in the face by Shad for his troubles. The week after that Shad attacked JTG again, after his match with Caylen Croft, though JTG would get the upper hand on Shad. Five days later, they faced each other at Extreme Rules in a Strap match, which was won by JTG. The two had a standard rematch on the May 6 edition of WWE Superstars, which Shad won by pinfall, thus ending their feud. Shad was then sent to FCW developmental territory, while JTG stayed on Smackdown. Shad was later released from his WWE contract on November 19, 2010 along with five other wrestlers.

After disbandment[link]

A few months after he was released from WWE, Shad Gaspard signed with Japanese wrestling promotion IGF in February 2011.[39] He is also focusing on his acting career, having shot his part in G.I. Joe: Retaliation, which is set for release in June 2013.[40] He also appeared on episodes of The Game. He is also set to star in other upcoming projects. Besides wrestling and acting, Gaspard also does modeling and works on a comic book. JTG is still signed on the Raw brand and still appears on Raw and WWE NXT. In 2012, it was rumored that he would star in the upcoming film The Marine 3, which would be produced by WWE and mark the beginning of an acting career. It is still unknown if this is true or not. Although they had conflict on screen during their disbandment and before Shad was released from WWE, they still remain friends off screen.

    • Cryme Tyme hosted a weekly WWE.com segment called Word Up,[54] during which they define a different word in a parody of The Electric Company. On June 26, 2009, they started hosting "Word Up" on SmackDown as a backstage segment with Eve and Slam Master J, who would constantly annoy the three. Eve departed from the segment after being traded to Raw as part of a tri-branded diva trade. Slam Master J departed soon after and was eventually released. This segment was discontinued when Cryme Tyme split in early 2010.

Professional wrestling career[link]

World Wrestling Entertainment / WWE[link]

Ohio Valley Wrestling (2006–2007)[link]

In the United States, Carelli took wrestling classes at and worked for the Ohio Valley Wrestling (OVW) a developmental territory for the national World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE). Upon joining OVW, Carelli was given the ring name Johnny Geo Basco. While there, he was involved in an infamous incident with Jim Cornette, the company's head booker and part-owner. After a storyline where he was supposed to act afraid of the Boogeyman but instead laughed, Cornette yelled at and slapped Carelli,[6] leading to Cornette being removed from his position as booker of OVW by WWE.[6][8][9]

Paul Heyman was appointed OVW booker to replace Cornette and changed Carelli's ring name from Johnny Geo Basco to Boris Alexiev, giving him a Russian shoot fighter gimmick.[6][10] As Alexiev he made his debut on April 12, 2006 along with his manager and "comrade", Mr. Strongko.[11] With his new gimmick he was booked to dominate opponents with stiff strikes and submission style wrestling,[12] including a 10-second win over a wrestler named Dewey.[11] He signed a developmental deal with WWE on August 11, 2006,[10] and continued working in OVW.

On January 24, 2007, Alexiev was booked to hold the Television Championship after defeating Mike Kruel, who defended the title for original champion Eddie Kraven.[13] He dropped the title back to Kruel on February 7, but regained it on March 14 after defeating Kruel in a rematch. His second reign lasted for three days, as he dropped it to Shawn Spears on March 17.[13] He was called up to the active roster a month later.

Debut and storyline with Maria (2007)[link]

He made his WWE debut when Umaga had a hand picked opponent selected by Vince McMahon. Santino was picked and won the WWE Intercontinental title in underdog fashion. The surname Marella was chosen for the character in honor of WWE Hall of Famer Gorilla Monsoon—real name Robert Marella—and was given to Carelli shortly before the trip to Italy.[6] The next day WWE.com posted a profile on Marella with a fictional background saying he was an Italian national who moved to Canada as a child and returned to his native country a few times each year to visit family. It further stated that he moved to the U.S. to begin training with the goal of breaking into professional wrestling, and ultimately WWE.[2]

Santino Marella and Maria.

Shortly after gaining the Intercontinental Championship, Marella started a scripted rivalry with Chris Masters, narrowly retaining the title over him in his first defenses.[14][15] He held the Intercontinental Championship for three months before dropping it back to Umaga on July 2,[16] after having just defeated him at the June 24 Vengeance: Night of Champions pay-per-view by disqualification when Umaga stopped listening to referee's instructions and continued punching Marella.

After losing the title, Marella's character became increasingly villainous. He was depicted as possessive and jealous over his girlfriend WWE Diva Maria. Over several weeks they appeared together in a series of segments on Raw, including two mini "game shows" hosted by General Manager William Regal which resulted in retired wrestler Ron Simmons winning a date with Maria, much to Santino's dismay.[17][18] At the same time Marella, began a campaign of bashing the WWE Films production The Condemned as its DVD release neared.[19] He was eventually confronted by the film's star, Steve Austin, who argued the film's merits before delivering a Stone Cold Stunner to Marella and soaking both him and Maria down with a hose from a Budweiser truck.[20] During the Austin program, Marella repeatedly mocked Austin and mangled the English language and his catchphrases in promos,[19] giving his character a new humorous bent.

After a short program with Jerry Lawler,[21][22] he was placed into a tag team with Carlito.[23][24] At the same time, Maria was chosen to be pose for Playboy magazine, which was used as part of their storyline. When he was unable to get her to turn the offer down,[25] he attempted to sabotage the cover unveiling, finally pushing Maria to break up with him.[26] At WrestleMania XXIV, Maria was involved in a "Playboy BunnyMania Lumberjack match", during which Santino interfered only to get punched by Jerry Lawler near the end of the match and clotheslined by celebrity Master of Ceremonies Snoop Dogg after the match.[27] Marella's feud with Maria came to an end after she defeated him on the episode of Raw the day after WrestleMania by dropping her head into Marrella's groin. Marella and Carlito began a feud with Hardcore Holly and Cody Rhodes over the World Tag Team Championship. During a title match between the two teams, Roddy Piper distracted Marella, who was then pinned and so lost the match for his team. Due to the distraction, Marella started a rivalry with Piper, including a confrontation on Jimmy Kimmel Live!.

Glamarella (2008–2009)[link]

Marella as Intercontinental Champion with then-partner Beth Phoenix in late 2008

On the July 14, 2008 episode of Raw, Marella was defeated by WWE Diva Beth Phoenix in a match. Marella issued an open challenge to the entire Raw roster.[28] The angle continued the following week after Marella lost to the returning D'Lo Brown. Marella and Phoenix shared a kiss, both expressing considerable confusion afterwards.[29] In later weeks, they became an on-screen power couple, later called "Glamarella", a portmanteau of "Glamazon" (Phoenix's nickname) and "Marella". At SummerSlam, Marella won the Intercontinental Championship for a second time, when he teamed with Phoenix against champion Kofi Kingston and WWE Women's Champion Mickie James. Phoenix pinned James after hitting her Glam Slam, thus winning both titles for her team per the pre-match stipulation.[30]

Marella faces The Great Khali.

During his second reign, Marella started a quest to become the "greatest Intercontinental champion of all the times" by beating The Honky Tonk Man's record reign of 64 weeks, constantly bringing out a status report called the "Honk-A-Meter". At Cyber Sunday, Marella defended the Intercontinental title against the Honky Tonk Man (who won the majority of fans' votes, beating fellow former champions Roddy Piper and Goldust), losing by disqualification.[31] On the November 10 episode of Raw, Marella lost the title to William Regal and thus failed to reign as champion for more than 64 weeks.[32]

At the beginning of 2009, Marella entered the Royal Rumble drawing number 28. He was instantly eliminated by Kane in 1.9 seconds, thus breaking The Warlord's two second record for shortest Royal Rumble appearance at the 1989 Royal Rumble.

Following the announcement of a 25-Diva battle royal at WrestleMania XXV to crown the first-ever "Miss WrestleMania", Marella became a fan favorite and was placed in an angle in which he expressed his desire to compete in the match. The storyline called for Marella to challenge Mickie James in a match where he had one arm tied behind his back, and if he won, he would gain entry into the match. He lost, however, and, as a result, the following week, in a bid to prove he was eligible to compete, he revealed he was wearing a mankini, but was subsequently attacked by most of the Divas on the roster. Nevertheless, at WrestleMania XXV, Marella won the 25 Diva battle royal, competing in drag under the disguise of "Santino Marella's twin sister, Santina", and last eliminating Phoenix and Melina.[33] He successfully defended his "Miss Wrestlemania" title against Beth Phoenix on Backlash in only 3 seconds with the help of The Great Khali. On the May 18 episode of Raw, Santina lost the "Miss Wrestlemania" title to Vickie Guerrero. Marella won it back at Extreme Rules when he defeated Vickie Guerrero and Chavo Guerrero in a handicap hog pen match.[34] On the June 22, 2009, episode of Raw, Raw's new owner Donald Trump fired Santina, who was revealed to be Santino's actual sister and not Santino himself as many had believed and suspected, thus making her the final Miss Wrestlemania.[35] Since he become backstage with Guest Host on RAW and was involved in the feud between Hornswoggle and Chavo Guerrero.

Teaming with Vladimir Kozlov (2010–2011)[link]

At WrestleMania XXVI, Marella competed in the 26-man battle royal dark match, which was won by Yoshi Tatsu.[36] Marella soon started trying to form a tag team with Vladimir Kozlov, who consistently refused the offer. On the May 31 edition of Raw, Kozlov intervened in a mixed tag team match featuring Marella and aided him in securing the victory.[37] On the July 19 edition of Raw, Kozlov teamed with Marella and in their first match as an official tag team, they defeated William Regal and Zack Ryder.[38] In August, Santino Marella started a relationship with Tamina, the manager of The Usos. At Night of Champions 2010, Marella and Kozlov competed in a Tag Team Turmoil match for the WWE Unified Tag Team championship but were unsuccessful as the titles were won by "Dashing" Cody Rhodes and Drew McIntyre. On the October 11 edition of Raw he successfully defeated Zack Ryder to become a part of the Raw Bragging Rights team against SmackDown. However at the event, Marella was the first of the seven Raw Superstars in the match to be eliminated after being pinned by Tyler Reks.[39] On the October 25 episode of Raw, Marella began a feud with Sheamus after he called Santino an embarrassment after being the first man eliminated from Team Raw at Bragging Rights. Sheamus then challenged Marella to a match, which he accepted. Later in a match, Marella scored a major upset by defeating former two–time WWE Champion Sheamus; Santino and Sheamus then had two subsequent run-ins, both of which ended in John Morrison saving Santino from Sheamus' post-match assaults.[40] On the November 15 edition of Raw, Marella and Kozlov became the number one contenders for the WWE Tag Team Championships, defeating The Usos in the process. Marella and Kozlov failed to capture the titles at Survivor Series 2010.

They went on to win the WWE Tag Team Championship in a Four-Way elimination tag team match on Raw on December 6, 2010 against The Usos, The Nexus and the tag team of Mark Henry and Yoshi Tatsu with a distraction created by John Cena and then after the celebration, The Usos' manager Tamina kissed Santino starting a relationship between the two. Tamina afterwards continued to accompany Santino for his matches. Santino and Kozlov retained their WWE Tag Team titles by disqualification at TLC: Tables, Ladders & Chairs against Justin Gabriel and Heath Slater of the Nexus after another Nexus member [Michael McGillicutty] chopblocked Santino in front of the referee. After TLC Pay Per View, Marella and Tamina beat Ted DiBiase and Maryse in several occasions in a mixed tag team match on RAW. On January 30, 2011, Santino competed in the Royal Rumble entering at number 37, he made it to the final two before losing to winner Alberto Del Rio. At the Elimination Chamber, he and Kozlov lost the titles to Heath Slater and Justin Gabriel of the Corre. On the March 28 edition of Raw, it was confirmed Marella would team up with Vladimir Kozlov, Kane, and The Big Show, against the Corre (Slater, Gabriel, Ezekiel Jackson and Wade Barrett) in an eight-man tag team match at WrestleMania XXVII. However, due to an attack on Kozlov by the Corre during WrestleMania Axxess the day before WrestleMania, Kofi Kingston then took his place in the match.[41] Their team won, when Marella performed The Cobra on Slater, which was followed up by Big Show's right hand punch. On the April 11 edition of Raw, Marella interrupted the Corre to tell them he had formed an alliance called "The Apple" (Allied People Powered by Loathing Everything that you stand for), a pun on apple core. Marella's relationship with Tamina ended when she was drafted to SmackDown as part of the 2011 WWE Supplemental Draft.

On August 5, Kozlov was released from his WWE contract, effectively ending the partnership.[42] He then began teaming with Zack Ryder, beginning on the July 21 episode of Superstars, in a winning effort against the WWE tag team champions David Otunga and Michael McGillicutty. On the August 1 episode of Raw they were defeated by Otunga and McGillicutty.

On September 1, 2011, Marella injured his left shoulder following a car accident prior to a WWE event in Puerto Rico and was inactive for several weeks.[43]

He returned on the October 3 edition of Raw Supershow, in a winning effort against Jinder Mahal.[44] On the October 31 edition, Marella defeated Jack Swagger by roll-up pinfall after he spit water given to him by special guest star Beaker of The Muppets, in Swagger's face.[45][46] The following Raw, Swagger defeated Marella by submission and over the next few months he went on a losing streak against Cody Rhodes, Kevin Nash, and Wade Barrett.[47][48][49] On the January 6 episode of SmackDown, Marella defeated Drew McIntyre and became the new assistant to the Smackdown General Manager Theodore Long.[50] Marella would then team up with Yoshi Tatsu on the January 27 edition of SmackDown and "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan on the February 3 edition to face Tag Team Champons Primo and Epico, both in losing efforts.[51][52] On the February 17 episode of Smackdown, Marella won a battle royal to replace Randy Orton in the Elimination Chamber match.[53] At Elimination Chamber, Marella failed to capture the World Heavyweight Championship after being eliminated last by Daniel Bryan.[54]

On the March 5 episode of Raw, Marella defeated Jack Swagger to win the United States Championship.[55] On the following SmackDown, Marella successfully defended his title against Swagger in a steel cage match, after he managed to escape through the cage door.[56] At WrestleMania XXVIII, Santino served as the team captain of Team Teddy. However, his team was defeated by Team Johnny, following interference from Eve.[57] On the following edition of Raw, Marella successfully defended his title against Swagger and Dolph Ziggler in a triple threat match.[58] On the April 16 edition of Raw SuperShow, Marella successfully defended his title against David Otunga.[59] In the pre-show of Extreme Rules, Marella defeated the The Miz to retain the United States Championship.[60] The following night on Raw, Marella competed in a Beat the Clock Challenge against The Miz to earn a WWE Championship match at Over the Limit, but was unsuccessful.[61] Marella then reunited with Zack Ryder, facing the likes of Primo and Epico, Curt Hawkins and Tyler Reks, and Titus O'Neil and Darren Young.[62][63][64] On the May 21 episode of Raw, Santino criticised Ricardo Rodriguez 's announcing and then he attacked Rodriguez with the Cobra.[65] On the May 25 episode of SmackDown,Santino was challenged by Rodriguez to a match, and Santino won.[66]

Personal life[link]

Prior to his WWE career, Carelli was born in Mississauga, Ontario, and attended Elizabeth Simcoe P.S. and Philip Pocock Catholic Secondary School during his early years. He was a mixed martial artist in Japan for several years before moving to the United States in May 2005 to learn to become a professional wrestler. Today, Carelli has a daughter.

Professional wrestling career[link]

Early career[link]

He made his official wrestling debut in 2006, when he faced Tony Omega at Chaotic Wrestling on February 24th. He faced Evan Siks on June 4 for the PWF Mayhem Heavyweight Championship.[5] He competed primarily in the New England area, including stints in National Wrestling Alliance – New England, Millennium Wrestling Federation, New England Championship Wrestling, the Eastern Wrestling Alliance, and Chaotic Wrestling.[6]

World Wrestling Entertainment / WWE[link]

Developmental territories (2006-2007)[link]

In September 2006, he signed a developmental contract with WWE and was assigned to Deep South Wrestling (DSW), a Georgia based developmental federation.[1] He debuted in the new company, as Kofi Nahaje Kingston, in a dark match loss to Montel Vontavious Porter on September 21.[7] For the rest of 2006 and the beginning of 2007, he appeared in DSW, as well as its Kentucky based sister promotion Ohio Valley Wrestling, where he was in a tag team dubbed the "Commonwealth Connection" with Harry Smith.[8][9][10] In 2007, under the ring name "Kofi Nahaje Kingson", he had his first exposure to the main WWE roster, when he worked dark matches on March 5 and 26 before episodes of Raw against Charlie Haas and Trevor Murdoch, respectively.[11][12] When he returned to the developmental federations, he shortened his original ring name to "Kofi Kingston" and continued to use both ring names throughout his duration there.[1] He also worked live events, defeating Shelton Benjamin on May 5,[13] and Val Venis on May 6.[14]

When the Florida based developmental territory, Florida Championship Wrestling, opened in June, Kingston was relocated there, appearing at their first show on June 26 teaming with Eric Pérez against Keith Walker and Rycklon Stephens in a losing effort.[15] Kingston worked there for most of the remainder of the year.[15]

ECW (2007–2008)[link]

A series of vignettes for Kingston's television debut began airing on the weekly ECW on Syfy television show starting on December 6, 2007.[16]view During this introduction phase, his videos, the official website, and commentators all made note that he would be the first Jamaican-born person to wrestle for the company. He debuted on the January 22, 2008 episode of ECW as a face with a win over local wrestler David Owen in Charlottesville Virginia.[17] After wrestling sporadic matches, Kingston was involved in his first major match, a 24-man battle royal during the WrestleMania XXIV pre-show with the winner receiving an ECW Championship match, but was eliminated by Mark Henry.[18] Kingston remained undefeated in singles competition in ECW for months and was placed into a feud with Shelton Benjamin at the end of April 2008. After two straight losses, Benjamin got a win over Kingston on the May 20 episode of ECW, ending his undefeated streak.[19] On the June 24 episode of ECW, Kingston defeated Benjamin in an Extreme Rules match to end their feud.[20]

Championship Reigns (2008–2009)[link]

Kingston as United States Champion

As part of the 2008 WWE Supplemental Draft, Kingston was drafted to the Raw brand.[21] In his first match as a member of Raw roster, he defeated Chris Jericho for the Intercontinental Championship at Night of Champions.[22] The win made him the first Ghanaian wrestler to hold a championship in World Wrestling Entertainment and it was also his first championship in his wrestling career.[23] Kingston held the championship until SummerSlam, where he and Women's Champion Mickie James both lost their championships in an intergender "winner take all" tag team match to Beth Phoenix and Santino Marella.[24]

At Unforgiven, he appeared backstage, coming to the aid of then-World Champion CM Punk, who had been attacked by Manu, Randy Orton, and the World Tag Team Champions Cody Rhodes and Ted DiBiase.[25] Soon after coming to his rescue, Punk and Kingston were paired together more often, and on the October 27 episode Raw, the duo won the World Tag Team Championship.[26] He was also involved at Survivor Series in the traditional ten-men elimination tag team match on the side of Team Batista, but was eliminated by Orton.[27] Kingston and Punk lost the World Tag Team Championship to John Morrison and The Miz at a WWE live event on December 13.[28]

At No Way Out in 2009, Kingston won a spot in the World Heavyweight Championship Elimination Chamber by defeating Kane, but was unable to officially enter the match, as he was ambushed by Edge, who took Kingston's place and eventually won the match.[29]

Kingston defeated Chris Jericho, after interference from Ric Flair, to earn a spot in the Money in the Bank ladder match at WrestleMania XXV, but the match was won by CM Punk.[30][31] After winning a Triple Threat Number One Contender's match the week before, Kingston defeated Montel Vontavious Porter on the June 1 episode of Raw to win the United States Championship.[32] For the next several months, he went on to defend and retain his title at PPVs such as Extreme Rules,[33] Night of Champions,[34] Breaking Point,[35] and WWE Hell in a Cell,[36] until losing the championship to The Miz on October 5 on Raw, ending his four month reign. On the October 12 episode of Raw, Kingston defeated Evan Bourne to qualify for Team Raw at WWE Bragging Rights.[37] Team Raw lost the match, however, when the Big Show betrayed them by chokeslamming Kingston, allowing Chris Jericho to pick up the win for Team SmackDown.[38]

Feud with Randy Orton (2009-2010)[link]

Kingston in a match against Jack Swagger and The Miz

During WWE Bragging Rights, Kingston and Raw teammate Cody Rhodes argued about Kingston taking the loss in their match. As a result, when Rhodes and Ted DiBiase were interfering on behalf of Randy Orton during his WWE Championship match, Kingston ran out with a chair and chased Rhodes and DiBiase out of the arena. Orton would eventually lose the match.[39] On the October 26 episode of Raw, Kingston began a feud with Orton, as Orton believed Kingston cost him the WWE Championship. After Kingston defeated Chris Jericho, Orton came from behind and attacked Kingston, ending with Orton throwing Kingston onto the side of the entrance ramp. Later that night, Kingston destroyed Orton's car.[40] On the November 16 episode of Raw, Kingston saved guest host "Rowdy" Roddy Piper from an assault by Orton and later performed a Boom Drop from a rail in the crowd onto Orton, sending Orton through a table.[41] Kingston went on to lead his Survivor Series team to victory against Orton's team, where he was the sole survivor, last eliminating Orton.[42] On the November 30 episode of Raw, Kingston was scheduled to face Orton in a one on one match, only to be assaulted from behind by Cody Rhodes and Ted DiBiase. Despite the assault, Kingston still wished to continue, and was quickly defeated by Orton.[43] The following week, Kingston defeated Orton in a rematch where guest host Mark Cuban, who had a grudge against Orton since their encounter at Survivor Series in 2003 when Orton performed an RKO on him, gave Kingston a fast count. He then announced that with one victory apiece, the two would face off again at TLC: Tables, Ladders & Chairs.[44] Orton defeated Kingston at the event.[45] On the December 28 episode of Raw, Orton interfered in Kingston's match for the United States Championship, resulting in their rivalry continuing.[46] On the January 4 episode of Raw, Orton once again defeated Kingston.[47] The following week on January 11, Kingston would compete against Orton and John Cena in a triple threat match with the winner facing Sheamus for the WWE Championship at Royal Rumble. Orton ultimately won the match by pinning Kingston.[48] On the February 1 episode of Raw, Kingston won a qualifying match by defeating the Big Show via disqualification to advance to the WWE Championship Elimination Chamber match at the inaugural Elimination Chamber event. Kingston, however, failed to win after being eliminated by Sheamus. On the March 22 episode of Raw, Kingston defeated Vladimir Kozlov to qualify for the Money in the Bank ladder match at WrestleMania XXVI. At the event however, Kingston was unsuccessful as the match was won by Jack Swagger.[49]

Intercontinental Champion (2010–2011)[link]

Kingston during his second reign as United States Champion

On April 26, as part of the 2010 WWE Draft, Kingston was drafted to the SmackDown brand. In his debut match for the brand, he defeated Chris Jericho.[50] On the following episode of SmackDown, Kingston was entered into a four-man tournament for the vacant Intercontinental Championship after Drew McIntyre had been stripped of the title earlier in the show. He went on to defeat Dolph Ziggler in the first match of the tournament.[51] Christian defeated Cody Rhodes in the second match. As a result, Kingston faced and defeated Christian in the finals of the tournament to seemingly win his second Intercontinental Championship on the May 14 episode of SmackDown. However, moments later, McIntyre came out with a letter, signed by Vince McMahon, saying that Theodore Long was irresponsible and abused his power. The letter also stated that McIntyre was reinstated to the active roster and that Kingston was stripped of the Intercontinental Championship, which returned to McIntyre.[52]

It was later announced on WWE.com that Kingston would face McIntyre for the title at Over the Limit. At the event, Kingston defeated McIntyre to officially win his second Intercontinental Championship.[53] On June 1, Kingston was announced to mentor Michael McGillicutty on the second season of WWE NXT.[54] On the June 18 episode of SmackDown, it was announced that at Fatal 4 Way, Kofi would defend the Intercontinental Championship against Drew McIntyre. At the event, Kingston defeated McIntyre to retain the title.[55] On July 18 at Money in the Bank, Kingston was unsuccessful as Kane grabbed the briefcase to win the SmackDown Money in the Bank ladder match.[56] The following SmackDown, Kingston lost to Dolph Ziggler in a non-title match.[57]

On the July 30 episode of SmackDown, Kingston faced Ziggler in a rematch but lost via disqualification, resulting in Ziggler earning a title match.[58] On August 6 episode of SmackDown, Ziggler defeated Kingston to win the Intercontinental Championship. Kingston got his rematch for the title August 15 at Summerslam, which ended in a no contest after The Nexus interfered. On the August 20 episode of Smackdown, Kingston faced Ziggler once again for the Intercontinental Championship defeating Ziggler by disqualification, but by rule, Ziggler retained his Intercontinental Championship.[59] The following week, Kingston faced Ziggler once again for the Intercontinental Championship with the pre-match stipulation that if Ziggler should be disqualified the title would change hands. Vickie Guerrero intervened during the match and got Ziggler counted out so the title did not change hands. At Night of Champions, Ziggler once again faced Kingston with the Intercontinental Championship on the line with the stipulation that if Dolph was either counted out or disqualified that Kofi would win the title. Dolph Ziggler ended up winning the match by pinfall and retained the title once again. On the October 15th episode of Smackdown, Kingston defeated Drew McIntyre to earn a spot in the Team Smackdown competing at Bragging Rights. At the pay-per-view, Team SmackDown emerged as the superior brand with Edge and Rey Mysterio being the final survivors.

Kingston in December 2010

On the December 3 episode of SmackDown, Kingston defeated Jack Swagger to become the number one contender for the Intercontinental Championship but failed to win back the title when Swagger attacked Kofi during the match. At the TLC: Tables, Ladders & Chairs, Kingston was unsuccessful in claiming the Intercontinental title against Swagger and Ziggler in a ladder match as he and Swagger unhooked the belt but it dropped to the mat and Ziggler grabbed it and retained the title.

On the January 7, 2011 episode of SmackDown, Kingston defeated Dolph Ziggler to become the Intercontinental Champion for a third time. Immediately following the match, acting General Manager Vickie Guerrero ordered that Ziggler invoke his rematch clause straight away, but Kingston quickly pinned Ziggler again to retain his championship.

After using the Trouble in Paradise on Alberto Del Rio to win the Tag Team match against Kane and Alberto Del Rio with Rey Mysterio on his side on the 28th January of episode on WWE Smackdown!, Kofi then started a feud with Alberto Del Rio after many attacks. Even Alberto Del Rio prevented Kofi Kingston from qualifying for the Elimination Chamber. On the 11th February episode of Smackdown!, Kofi Kingston faced Alberto Del Rio in a singles match but in the end Alberto Del Rio beat Kofi Kingston after being tapout with the Cross Arm Breaker. On the 19th February, Alberto Del Rio also interfered in Kofi Kingston's match against The Miz which The Miz won. They eventually faced each other again in a non-title bout at Elimination Chamber which was won by Del Rio.

On March 22 at the tapings of the March 25 episode of SmackDown, Kingston lost the Intercontinental Championship to Wade Barrett.[60] On April 1 episode of Smackdown, Kingston won his rematch against Wade Barrett by disqualification. After Vladimir Kozlov was injured at the hands of the Corre, Kingston was chosen as Kozlov's replacement in an eight man tag team match involving Kofi, Kane, Big Show and Santino Marella versus the Corre at WrestleMania 27, which Kingston's team won.[61]

United States and Tag Team Champion (2011–present)[link]

Kingston in the Raw Money in the Bank Ladder match.

On April 26, 2011, Kingston was drafted back to the Raw brand as part of the 2011 Supplemental Draft. [62] On May 1, Kingston defeated Sheamus in a Tables Match at Extreme Rules to win his second United States Championship, in the process returning the title to Raw.[63] On the May 9 episode of Raw, Kingston successfully defended his championship against Jack Swagger.[64] At WWE Capitol Punishment, Kingston lost the title to Dolph Ziggler.[65] Kingston faced Ziggler in a rematch for the title on the June 20 episode of Raw in a 2-out-of-3 Falls match, but Ziggler retained the United States Championship as the match ended with Ziggler being disqualified.[66]

On the August 22 episode of Raw, Kingston won the WWE Tag Team Championship with Evan Bourne when they defeated David Otunga and Michael McGillicutty.[67] On the August 29 episode of Raw, the duo was called "Air Boom", and they had their first successful title defense when they defeated Otunga and McGillicutty in a rematch.[68] At Night of Champions Air Boom retained their titles against The Miz & R-Truth by disqualification after Miz attacked a WWE referee.[69] At Hell in a Cell and Vengeance, Air Boom retained their titles twice against Dolph Ziggler and Jack Swagger.[70][71] Bourne was suspended throughout November for his first violation of the company’s Wellness policy.[72] At TLC: Tables, Ladders & Chairs Air Boom successfully retained their titles aganist Primo and Epico.[73] On January 15, Air Boom lost the Tag Team titles to Primo and Epico at a house show.[74] On the January 16 episode of Raw, Air Boom were awarded a rematch but failed to regain the titles.[75] The following day, Evan Bourne was suspended again for his second violation of WWE's Wellness Policy.[76]

At the 2012 Royal Rumble event, Kingston participated in the Royal Rumble match and although he did not win, he had a stand-out moment when he saved himself from elimination by walking on his hands to reach the ring steps and re-enter the ring.[77] At Elimination Chamber, Kingston failed to capture the WWE Championship after being eliminated third by Chris Jericho.[78][79] Kingston then began teaming with R-Truth, facing the likes of Primo and Epico and Dolph Ziggler and Jack Swagger which they both won and lost, respectively.[80][81] On the February 27 edition of Raw, Kingston and Truth failed to capture the WWE Tag Team Championship from Primo and Epico in a Triple Threat Tag Team Match, also involving Ziggler and Swagger.[82] On the April 30 edition of Raw, Kingston and Truth defeated Primo and Epico to win the WWE Tag Team Championship.[83] At Over the Limit, Kingston and Truth successfully defended their titles against Dolph Ziggler and Jack Swagger.[84]

Personal life[link]

After receiving a university degree at Boston College, he initially pursued a career in the corporate world. Sarkodie-Mensah decided to drop his business pursuits and opt to go into professional wrestling. After very hard consideration and persuasion from his brother Kisean, Kofi accepted a developmental contract to join WWE and was transported to Deep South Wrestling (DSW) while Kisean stayed home and practiced music. Kofi has also mentioned watching Shawn Michaels wrestle in 1996 as an inspiration for his wrestling career.[85]

Sarkodie-Mensah began wrestling professionally in 2005, under the ring name of Kofi Nahaje Kingston.[1] Kingston's country of birth was billed as Jamaica because, according to Leslie Goffe of the BBC, "[People] would be more likely to embrace a person from the land of Bob Marley and reggae music" than someone from Ghana.[1][85][86] In late 2009, this was retconned when his character became more serious. The on-screen explanation was that his smiling Jamaican gimmick paid tribute to Jamaican culture.

(Bukan untuk dimengerti, karena takkan kumengerti)
Cukup kesalahan telah kau buat padaku
Cukup luka hati telah terjadi karenamu
S'lalu saja 'ku kembali kepadamu
Selalu saja
[Reff.:]
Aku bertahan di sisimu demi cinta
Takkan kutinggalkan dirimu karena cinta…
Tak mudah untuk dimengerti
Dan mungkin memang tak perlu dimengerti… ooo…
(Bukan untuk dimengerti)
Kau masih ulangi salah yang sama kekasihku
Berkali-kali engkau sakiti hati ini
S'lalu saja 'ku kembali kepadamu
Selalu saja
[Reff.:]
Aku bertahan di sisimu demi cinta
Takkan 'ku tinggalkan dirimu karena cinta…
Tak mudah untuk dimengerti
Dan mungkin memang tak perlu dimengerti… yeah…
(Lead guitar)
S'lalu saja… s'lalu saja…
[Reff.:]
Aku bertahan di sisimu demi cinta
Takkan 'ku tinggalkan dirimu karena cinta…
Aku bertahan di sisimu demi cinta
Takkan 'ku tinggalkan dirimu karena cinta…
Tak mudah untuk dimengerti
Tak mungkin untuk 'ku mengerti
Dan mungkin memang tak perlu dimengerti… yeah… ooo…

Mengapa waktu
Tak pernah berpihak kepadaku
Apakah aku terlalu
Terlalu banyak berkelana
Mengapa kita
masih saja tak pernah bersatu
Selalu saja bertemu bertemu saat
Kau milik yang lain
Mungkin kau bukanlah jodohku
Bukan takdirku
Terus terang
Reff:
Aku merindukanmu
Setengah mati merindu
Tiada henti merindukanmu
Masih hatiku untukmu
Aku tetap menunggumu
Mengapa waktu
Tak pernah berpihak kepadaku
Apakah aku terlalu
Terlalu banyak berkelana
Mungkin kau bukanlah jodohku
Atau bahkan bukan takdirku
Terus terang
Back to Reff:
Aku merindukanmu
Setengah mati merindu
Aku merindukanmu
Aku tetap menunggumu
Menuggumu
Menunggumu
