The Arctic's Record Breaking Ice Melt
The sea ice in the Arctic Ocean dropped below the previous all-time record set in 2007. This year also marks the first time that there has been less than 4 million square kilometers (1.54 million square miles) of sea ice since satellite observations began in 1979. This animation shows the 2012 time-series of ice extent using sea ice concentration data from the DMSP SSMI/S satellite sensor. The black area represents the daily average (median) sea ice extent over the 1979-2000 time period. Layered over top of that are the daily satellite measurements from January 1 -- September 14, 2012. A rapid melt begins in July, whereby the 2012 ice extents fall far below the historical average. The National Snow and Ice Data Center (www.nsidc.org) will confirm the final minimum ice extent data and area once the melt stabilizes, usually in mid-September.

NOAA Ocean Acidification Demonstration
Ocean Acidification is a global-scale change in the basic chemistry of oceans that is under way now, as a direct result of the increased carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. We are just beginning to understand the impacts of Ocean Acidification on life in the ocean. The moniker osteoporosis of the sea, gives you a hint about some of its impacts. Mississippi River Is Drying Up
FAIR USE NOTICE: The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration says this past July was the hottest ever for the US since record-keeping began. www.todaysthv.com "It looks like a coastline out there," said Reynold Minsky, president of the 5th Louisiana Levee District board. "There are more beaches on the river than there are in Florida." www.shreveporttimes.com The worst US drought in 50 years is making the mighty Mississippi River dry up and could curb shipping there altogether. www.newser.com The Mississippi river is drying up and some shipping companies are worried that the drought of 1988 may be repeated, a time when the river dried up so much that barge traffic came to a standstill. In 1988 the shipping industry lost $1 billion, a number that would be far higher in 2012 and could be reached in as little as three days. www.inquisitr.com

NOAA Satellite Captures Venus Transit
The NOAA GOES satellites are most commonly associated with the non-stop coverage of severe weather over the western hemisphere. However, one of the sensors on-board the GOES spacecraft, the Solar X-Ray Imager (SXI), points towards the Sun, providing constant monitoring of space weather, especially solar flares. On June 5th, the GOES-15 SXI captured the transit of Venus across the Sun. It can be seen in this animation as a small dark spot that crosses from left to right. The next transit of Venus visible by Earth will occur in 2117.

Christening and Launch of the NOAA Ship Reuben Lasker - June 16, 2012
June 16, 2012 Marinette, WI Marinette Marine Corporation launched on June 16 a new fisheries survey vessel, the Reuben Lasker, it built for NOAA at its Marinette, WI shipyard. The ship was christened by Pamela Lasker, daughter of the ship's namesake -- a pioneering fisheries scientist. The high-tech ship will assess fish stocks and study other marine life, including marine mammals and sea turtles, on the West Coast. Dawn to Dusk: Hurricane Sandy, October 29, 2012, Super Rapid Scan
This time-lapse video shows the evolution of Hurricane Sandy from dawn to dusk on October 29, 2012. The video was compiled from satellite images taken every minute from 6:00 am to 6:30 pm EDT. The images were collected in "super rapid scan" mode by the GOES-14 satellite, which observes Earth from geostationary orbit (35800 km or 22300 miles) over the Western Hemisphere. The changing angles of sunlight highlight the motions and different structures in the clouds. GOES satellites are built by NASA and operated by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. NASA animation by Kevin Ward, using images from NOAA and the University of Wisconsin-Madison Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies. NOAA 18 Weather sat image with Hama nano RTL 2832U E4000, SDRsharp and WXtoimg. August 3rd, 2012
Try to have an image of NOAA weather satellite with Hama nano Realtek 2832U E4000, SDRsharp and WXtoimg. It's really important set the sample rate of "Front end" in SDRsharp on 1024 MSPS! Because "0.90001" doesn't work in WXtoimg and 2048 MSPS is a little to much for some computers and probably makes synchronization errors. You can see and hear it on picture and video of NOAA 18. Received between buildings. Location: Dresden/Germany Antenna: self-made Turnstile (25€) www.dl7awl.de Receiver: Hama nano Realtek 2832U E4000 (25€) Software: SDRsharp, WXtoimg (0€)

CITY NEW YORK - Hurricane Sandy New York City 30 October 2012
The Hurricane App, created by Bournemouth-based 3 Sided Cube, has had a total of 500000 downloads - 50000 since the hurricane struck the coast. It aims to keep those affected on the US East Coast "informed and prepared", says the 10-strong team behind it. The free app was launched in June and usually sees 800 downloads per day. The app allows users to get notifications on any threats in their area or to keep track of loved ones by linking to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) National Weather Service. It also offers an "I'm Safe" feature and has sent out more than three million alerts to keep those people affected informed. The American Red Cross approached 3 Sided Cube after hearing about a first aid app it created for the British Red Cross.
