Somalia market bombing in Baidoa kills 11
The governor of the region, Abdifitah Mohamed Gesey, told the BBC that most of the casualties were women and children. Mr Gesey said the bomb was planted in a small basket and hidden in a busy market in the centre of town. In February Ethiopian troops seized Baidoa from the Islamist militia al-Shabab. Witnesses said the bomb went off shortly after Somali government troops had arrived. Mr Gesey blamed al-Shabab, but so far no organisation has said it was behind the attack. Peacekeepers It is the second bomb attack in Somalia in less than a week. On Wednesday eight people were killed in a suicide attack on the national theatre in the capital Mogadishu. African Union peacekeepers for the first time recently deployed to the town, which is on a strategically important route. It is one of the biggest attacks in the area since Ethiopian and Somali forces took control. Baidoa, 250km (155 miles) north-west of Mogadishu, had been one of the most important al-Shabab bases. Al-Shabab said it had withdrawn its forces as part of a "tactical retreat" and threatened to start a guerrilla war in response.

Ethiopian Troops Drive Out al-Shabaab: Terror Group Linked to al-Qaeda Leaves Baidoa in Somalia
As regional forces fight Islamic terror organisations to regain stability in eastern Africa, Ethiopian troops in Somalia say they have delivered a major blow al-Shabaab, a terrorist group aligned with al-Qaeda. Military spokesmen say the terror group has been driven out of its stronghold of Baidoa, and the United Nations recently voted to increase African Union forces with 18000 new personnel. Not far away, South Sudan is working on a legal framework which will give it full access to the five-country East Africa Community. This will substantially improve its economic influence in the region. South Sudan is also receiving help with social problems from Israel, a crucial ally for the new country. Israeli NGO IsraAID has been working in the country since it declared independence last summer. IsraAID recently announced a new initiative to train social workers to combat violence against women.
