The Bahamas
The Bahamas officially the Commonwealth of The Bahamas, is an English-speaking country consisting of 29 islands, 661 cays, and 2387 islets (rocks). It is located in the Atlantic Ocean north of Cuba, Hispaniola (Dominican Republic and Haiti) and the Caribbean Sea, northwest of the Turks and Caicos Islands, and southeast of the United States of America (nearest to the state of Florida). Its total land area is almost 14 000 km², with an estimated population of 330000. Its capital is Nassau. Originally inhabited by Arawakan Taino people, The Bahamas were the site of Columbus' first landfall in the New World in 1492. Although the Spanish never colonised The Bahamas, they shipped the native Lucayans (as the Bahamian Taino settlers referred to themselves) to slavery in Hispaniola. The islands were mostly deserted from 1513 to 1650, when British colonists from Bermuda settled on the island of Eleuthera. The Bahamas became a crown colony in 1718 when the British clamped down on piracy. Following the American War of Independence, thousands of pro-British loyalists and enslaved Africans moved to The Bahamas and set up a plantation economy. The slave trade was abolished in the British Empire in 1807 and many Africans liberated from slave ships by the Royal Navy were settled in The Bahamas during the 19th century. Slavery itself was abolished in 1834 and the descendants of enslaved and liberated African form the bulk of The Bahamas's population today. Economic activity is mostly based ...

HECTOMETER - World Record
Watch my newest poetic adventure, Lost in the Alps! ----> www.tinyurl.com/7ebrwt6
This is the visual poem of William Trubridge's world record freedive to 100 meters (one hectometer, basically one football field length and back) in order to bring light to the plight of the world's smallest cetacean, the Hector's Dolphin of New Zealand. With one breath of air and diving without weights, fins or any propulsive assistance, William descended to 101 meters in the waters of Dean's Blue Hole, Bahamas, the deepest blue hole in the world.
This short documentary of the record attempts to transmit what it is like to freedive deep beneath the surface, and how we can return to explore our potential as an aquatic mammal in the search to help our endangered cousins of the seas.

The HECTOMETER freedive
William Trubridge becomes the first human being to dive completely unassisted to 100 meters (one hectometer).
With a single breath of air, and only his hands and feet for propulsion, he set this historic world record in Dean's Blue Hole, Long Island, Bahamas, on December 13, 2010.
Directed by Matthew Brown http://www.vimeo.com/matthewbrown/videos. Music by Hans Zimmer.
The names listed during the descent were the supporters who each purchased a meter of the 100m rope.
For more information on William Trubridge, freediving and courses, visit http://www.verticalblue.net
The dive was done to raise awareness of the plight of the Hector's Dolphin. There are now only 100 remaining North Island (Maui) Hector's Dolphins - one of the smallest and most beautiful species of dolphin in the world. Hector's Dolphins are found only in New Zealand, and only in shallow coastal waters, less than 100 meters deep, putting them at the mercy of gill-net fishing that takes place in those waters. Their population has been reduced by 75% in the last 30 years, and the Maui Dolphin subspecies is teetering on the verge of extinction.

Miami to Bimini Bahamas on Sea-Doos (Jet Skis & Jet Boats)
Miami to Bimini - In July of 2010 we left Miami and crossed the Gulf Stream on 4 Sea Doos, arriving at South Bimini in the Bahamas (55 miles). Beauty ensued. All together there were 8 of us that made the trip and it was the adventure of a lifetime. This video is just small summary; With clear-blue water, jet boats, jet skis, good looking ladies, and 4 guys from Tampa Bay that love supercharged watercraft. We stayed on the island of South Bimini, at the Bimini Sands resort. The island put on a great fireworks displays to celebrate their "Independence Day" on July 11th. Sea Doos used: A 2008 RXT 215, an '08 RXP-X 255, and 2 '07 150 Speedster 215hp jet boats. Filmed with Kodak PlaySport in 720P at 60 fps
