Language Inquisition: Estonia bans speaking Russian
Renowned for their uncompromising policies to banish all signs of a Soviet legacy, Estonian officials are pushing harder and harder on the country's, still vast, Russian-speaking community. The minority that's long been threatened with a 'mother tongue ban' now plans to fight to the bitter end for language freedom. RT on Twitter twitter.com RT on Facebook www.facebook.com

My Estonia
Estonia is a country in Northern Europe in the Baltic region. It is bordered to the north by Finland across the Gulf of Finland, to the west by Sweden, to the south by Latvia, and to the east by the Russian Federation. The territory of Estonia covers 45226 km² and is influenced by a temperate seasonal climate. The Estonians are a Finnic people closely related to the Finns, with the Estonian language sharing many similarities to Finnish. Estonia is a democratic parliamentary republic and is divided into fifteen counties. The capital and largest city is Tallinn. Estonia has been a member of the United Nations since 17 September 1991 of the European Union since 1 May 2004 and of NATO since 29 March 2004. Estonia has also signed the Kyoto protocol. With only 1.3 million inhabitants, it comprises one of the smallest populations of the European Union countries. Video music by Urmas Alender - Minu Eestimaa

The madness of being Estonian
Being Estonian is completely crazy, crazier than being in Monty Python's Flying Circus. Most people I know are blessed because they have always had their identity. It is something they take for granted.
I have always had my identity in my heart but I have not always existed for the outside world. Even now I hear strange things when I say I am Estonian.
The completely opposite views of the West and the East are the most surreal thing out there. For a Westerner I am a (former) communist and (almost) a Russian. For the Russians I am a fascist, a Nazi and (almost) a German. How can one remain sane like this?
The existence of Finland is great help against Russian propaganda. Finland was also in the MRP but it managed to stay independent after WW2. Every time some insane Russian starts to mumble how great the Soviet Union was to Estonia, I just have to say one word: "Finland." And it's game over.
Russians say that Estonians write their language with "German letters". We use the Latin alphabet. This is another controversy. As a child I liked to read books, magazines of the Republic of Estonia that had existed between the two world wars. I started with the ones published in the 1930s. Why? Because the ones published in the 1920s used Gothic script that was far more difficult... and far more German. To consider Latin script "German letters" is just beyond surreal.
I own nothing. My actions are 'fair use'.
