Derek Meddings (15 January 1931 – 10 September 1995) was a British film and television special effects designer, initially noted for his work on the "Supermarionation" TV puppet series produced by Gerry Anderson, and later for the 1970s and 1980s James Bond and Superman film series.
Derek Meddings was born in St Pancras, London, England. Both Meddings' parents had worked in the British film industry: his father as a carpenter at Denham Studios and his mother as producer Alex Korda's secretary and actress Merle Oberon's stand-in. Meddings went to art school and, in the late 1940s, also found work at Denham Studios, lettering credit titles. It was there that he met effects designer Les Bowie and joined his matte painting department.
During the 1950s, Meddings' work with Bowie included the creation of Transylvanian landscapes for Hammer Films and a "string and cardboard" invention that proved useful when Meddings was hired for Gerry Anderson's earliest TV puppet series.
The James Bond series focuses on a fictional British Secret Service agent created in 1953 by writer Ian Fleming, who featured him in twelve novels and two short-story collections. Since Fleming's death in 1964, eight other authors have written authorised Bond novels or novelizations: Kingsley Amis, Christopher Wood, John Gardner, Raymond Benson, Sebastian Faulks, Jeffery Deaver, William Boyd and Anthony Horowitz. The latest novel is Trigger Mortis by Anthony Horowitz, published in September 2015. Additionally Charlie Higson wrote a series on a young James Bond, and Kate Westbrook wrote three novels based on the diaries of a recurring series character, Moneypenny.
The character has also been adapted for television, radio, comic strip, video games and film. The films are the longest continually running and the third-highest-grossing film series to date, which started in 1962 with Dr. No, starring Sean Connery as Bond. As of 2016, there have been twenty-four films in the Eon Productions series. The most recent Bond film, Spectre (2015), stars Daniel Craig in his fourth portrayal of Bond; he is the sixth actor to play Bond in the Eon series. There have also been two independent productions of Bond films: Casino Royale (a 1967 spoof) and Never Say Never Again (a 1983 remake of an earlier Eon-produced film, Thunderball).

The Adventures of Twizzle is the first television show produced by AP Films and specifically Gerry Anderson, after being approached by author Roberta Leigh (who also co-produced with Anderson) and her colleague Suzanne Warner. Sources vary as to who directed the series. In addition to his production duties, Anderson also directed the episodes with photography by Arthur Provis, Anderson's founding partner at AP Films. The music for the songs was written by Leslie Clair (a pseudonym for Leslie Solley) and scored by Barry Gray. Art direction was by Reg Hill and special effects were by Derek Meddings, all of whom would become long-time collaborators of Anderson. Twizzle, and all the puppets for the 52 episodes, were made by Joy Laurey. There were two Twizzle puppets made for filming, one for conventional shots and the second for stunt shots when Twizzle's arms and legs became longer, a trick that relied on a system of curtain rings and puppet strings pulled inside the puppets' arms and legs.
Derek is a male name. It is the English language short form of Dederik, the Low German form of the name Theodoric. Theodoric is an old Germanic name with an original meaning of "people-ruler".
Common variants of the name are Derrek, Derick and Derrick, more rarely also Deryck or 'Derrok'. The Dutch language short form of the same Low German / Low Franconian name is Dirk (popularised by the actor Dirk Bogarde) and the Low German Di(e)rk (Dierk Hoff).
The English form of the name arises in the 15th century, via import from the Low Countries. The native English (Anglo-Saxon) form of the name was Deoric or Deodric, from Old English Þēodrīc, but this name had fallen out of use in the medieval period. During the Late Middle Ages, there was intense contact between the territories adjacent to the North Sea, in particular due to the activities of the Hanseatic League. As a result, there was a lot of cross-pollination between Low German, Dutch, English, Danish and Norwegian. The given name Derk is found in records of the Low Countries from the early 14th century, and in the spelling Derck becomes rather common in name lists compiled in the Habsburg Netherlands during the early 16th century. An early bearer of the name Derek was lord of Keppel, Gelderland, in the early 14th century. A Derek van Keppel, lord of Verwoelde, died in 1495 and was succeeded by his eldest son, also called Derek van Keppel. A later Derek van Keppel died in 1646, succeeded by Asewolt van Keppel, the father of Arnold van Keppel, who in 1688 was created Earl of Albemarle in the Peerage of England.

Real explosions produced by firecrackers - inside miniatures - are a great way to make your film stand out in a world of bad CGI effects pulled of YouTube. Particularly good for model and puppet-based stories as it takes a lot of money and large models to make this effect 100% realistic. This will be of particular ...
Its amazing how legendary Fx and ModelVISION! maker Derek Meddings of 007 movie fame in the 1960s for the awesome "Thunderbirds" TV series realized the most efficient way to explore a planet is by 1 light tracked tank--not 3 separate vehicles (lander/orbiter, rover, flimsy space suits) --what is most efficient in WAR also applies to the elements of the planet you are on. Even more amazing is Meddings has the M113A9 AstroGavin ARMED with a 30mm automatic cannon in a Remote Weapon System (RWS) to blast the astronauts out of any troubles they might encounter. No such self-preservational emphasis with Need Another Seven Astronauts (NASA)? www.combatreform.org/WHEELSVSTRACKS The technoegotists even try to skimp on unmanned rovers with absurd wheels/balls then get themselves STUCK on planets ...

Film making take lots of work, form a good complening story to the set locations, including talented actors, costumes, makeups, camera etc. Some stories are based on the locations which do not exist at all. So, here come the role of people who design sets which is based on the story of movie. These people with their creative skills make the impossible things happen. So here I present famous movie scenes that were actually amazing miniature models.

Avalanche! was completed a number of years ago, before the creation of Dogfight! so the FX are very limited. Slow motion was used sparingly and I had no rolling sky or 6 metre sky backdrop to use with the models. It's a little more "amateur" than Dogfight!, however it's still rather interesting from a model point-of-view. I hope you enjoy it as much as I had fun in making it. Better late than never!
Here is a 1/72 scale model of the Moonraker 6 space shuttle from the 1979 James Bond film "Moonraker". This model is based on the Derek Meddings studio models built for the film and is as screen accurate as I can make it. It was built from the Monogram 1/72 space shuttle with boosters kit. Movie review of the James Bond film Moonraker. Moonraker (1979) is the eleventh spy film in the James Bond series, and the fourth to star Roger Moore as the fictional MI6 agent James Bond. The third and final film in the series to be directed by Lewis Gilbert, it co-stars Lois Chiles, Michael Lonsdale, Corinne Cléry, and Richard Kiel. Bond investigates the theft of a space shuttle, leading him to Hugo Drax, the owner of the shuttle's manufacturing firm. Along with space scientist Dr. Holly Goodhead, Bond follows the trail from California to Venice, Rio de Janeiro, and the Amazon rainforest, and finally into outer space to prevent a plot to wipe out the world population and to re-create humanity with a master race. Moonraker was intended by its creator Ian Fleming to become a film even be...

http://www.kickstarter.com/profile/jerrylentz Hi, as I record this message it is Derek Meddings' birthday. Derek was a brilliant British film and television special effects artist, he worked on the many of the TV series produced by Gerry Anderson, and later on James Bond, Superman and other films. He inspired so many people with his art, his work ethic, with his kindness. He certainly has inspire me over the many years. I love the models of buildings, space ships, cars and trucks... But I suppose what really inspires me is the problem solving ability he had for figuring out a way to get a job done. He'd come up against a challenge on how to do a special effect with the limitations he might've had and he'd surprise everyone on the crew with the result, but few viewers never even knew a sp...

A BBC 2 Radio show broadcast in 2000 all about Gerry Anderson. Presented by Bob Monkhouse. Featuring Anthea Turner, Cliff Richard and the Shadows, Barry Gray, Shane Rimmer, David Graham, Derek Meddings and Peter Wragg and many more. I found the recording on a cassette tape and, as far as i could see, it wasn't available anywhere on the internet. This is my tribute to Gerry which i have been working on for the past year. It has crashed Movie Maker so many times, and it is too big by far for MM to save it, that in the end, it comes to you via a screen and audio recorder (sorry for the watermark!). Enjoy!
