The Only Way is Wessex
BBC Three Comedy Exclusive. Vajazzles and Crinoline collide in the greatest tale that Hardy never wrote. What is it with the Mayor of Casterbridge? Can he really have sold Susan to a sailor when he was off his face at the furmity seller's tent? That is so bang out of order. Essex, shut up! The only way is Wessex!

Thomas Hardy's Wessex (trailer)
Wessex is the ancient name for the south-west part of England which was the stronghold of the old kings of Anglo-Saxon England. The modern name for this county is now known as Dorset, with Dorchester as its country home. This short documentary takes the viewer to the birth home of Thomas Hardy. Hardy is best known for his richly charactered novel "Tess of the d'Urbervilles" and much poetry. Set against the magnificent backdrop of the region can be heard extracts of Hardy's bleak, retrospective, but moving poetry.

35028 - The Royal Wessex 27-04-12
The first of three non-VSOE tours for 35028 Clan Line saw her take her first steps onto the Swanage branch since BR days. The tour was UK Railtours 'The Royal Wessex' from London Victoria to Swanage and return, via Andover. We kick things off at Winchester, with the Bulleid pacific running just over 5 minutes late. She would be taken off the main line and put onto the slow at Shawford, hence the lack of effort. You must also bear in mind that it is downhill the whole way to Southampton from Basingstoke. After catching the next train, I caught up with 35028 as she was waiting a path at Eastleigh, then jumped off the train at Southampton Airport Parkway. The next two shots from the morning were taken at Swaythling and Totton. The evening would see Class 67 haulage from Swanage to Southampton Central, and we see this drag at the Freightliner yard at Southampton Maritime. As soon as 67028 and 35028 had passed, it was onto another new location, Frenchmoor Lane near Dean. I had zoomed out a little too early for my liking, however the pan was fairly decent. On top of that, there was a very good glint shot off of the side of the locomotive, and it goes to show what a top job those at the MNLPS do. NOTE: The final shot at Frenchmoor Lane was taken at a level crossing, and was taken at a safe distance from the down line. Rather than chase onto the LSWR, I decided to return home, as I would be up early the next day for 5043 and the Cornishman... www.steamvideos.net

Darkfall: Duchy of Wessex jousting tournament
In celebration of regaining Brockmoore, one of our ancestral holdings, we held a jousting tournament. The rules were as follows: Your armour shall not be of better quality than full plate, and your weapon will hold the carvings of a rank 50 or lower. You shall use only one horse, and wield nothing but your one-handed weapon and shield. If or when the first horse dies, the other participant has a choice to either carry on jousting or to dismount but it is dishonourable not to dismount but we will leave that to you. When dismounted you fight with only your one-handed weapon and shield, there will be no magic and no heavy two-handed weapons, potions and food on the other hand are allowed during both the jousting and ground combat. Enchanted jewellery, armour and weapons are allowed. The winner of the jousting tournament had the honour of being able to challenge two Wessex knights: Sir Kaylem Sothenic and Sir Tarscanian Sothenic.

A Virtual Stonehenge Landscape
This short film shows the landscape around Stonehenge as recorded by LIDAR survey (airborne 3D scanning). Millions of measurements were taken across the landscape, and here they have been turned into a 'solid' computer model to show how well the archaeology is recorded by this method.
Prehistoric burial mounds (barrows), the great Cursus (a 2km Neolithic monument), the Bronze Age Avenue which links Stonehenge to the River Avon, and other henges such as Woodhenge and Durrington Walls are all clearly visible.
It is possibly the first time that this data has been shown in this way, at 1:1 with no reduction of data quality to produce a perspective animation.
To find out more technical information about the survey, visit the Stonehenge LIDAR section of the English Heritage website: http://www.english-heritage.org.uk/server/show/nav.00100200300400a001001

Opening a Roman Coffin
A remarkable Roman burial has been found at Boscombe Down, Wiltshire, UK. When we lifted the lid off a three tonne stone coffin we were surprised to discover that the coffin had not filled with soil.
Instead, we found ourselves looking down on the skeleton of a woman who was cradling a young child in her arms.
