Winchester Cathedral has its roots in the seventh century, when England's pagan monarchy first became Christians.
In 635, Cynegils, king of the West Saxons, was baptised. Just over a decade later, his son Cenwalh built the first Christian church in Winchester, the heart of Anglo-Saxon Wessex.
This small, cross-shaped church became known as Old Minster. You can still see where it stood, its outline traced in red brick, just north of the present building.
Soon, Old Minster became a cathedral, housing the throne (cathedra) of a bishop who held sway over a huge diocese that stretched from the English Channel to the river Thames.
This was now the most important royal church in Anglo-Saxon England. It was the burial place for some of the earliest kings of Wessex, including King Alfred the Great.
Here too King Cnut, who ruled England and Denmark in the early 11th century, chose to be buried, and was joined by his wife Queen Emma on her death in 1052.

A recent walk I took up Win Hill towards Kinder Scout on 14th August 2011. As you can see, the Heather was in full bloom and the weather was perfect for walking, despite having to carry all the equipment.
Win Hill lies north west of Bamford and the Peak District at approximately 463m (1,519ft) and is surrounded by the Derwent Reservoir, the River Noe and Ladybower Reservoir, with a ridge linking it to Kinder Scout.
Win Hill can be accessed from Hope Railway Station between Manchester and Sheffield or from Yorkshire Bridge up a steep 300m in 3/4 mile by Parkin Clough, through the woods and over the moor to the top.
Legend has it that Win Hill gets it's name from the Battle of Win Hill and Lose Hill in 626. Prince Cwichelm and his father, King Cynegils of Wessex, gathered their forces on neighbouring Lose Hill and marched on the Northumbrians based on Win Hill. Wessex was defeated by the Northumbrians building a wall and rolling boulders down upon them. However there is no record of this battle and should therefore be regarded as a myth.

In this part, we complete most of the tutorial just to make sure there is no additional enhancements to the combat system of the game. We also begin the journey as a trader personality and need help on what to do to make money. I don't seem to be able to recruit any peasants my self. So in a few parts, I enlist in the army of a minor noble at the lowest recruited class and fight in a couple sieges and open field battles and die.
Please give me any tips and recommendations for this lets play as I have not played Mount and Blade Warband in a while and have never played Brytenwalda. Thank you and remember to comment, thumbs up, and subscribe to my video updates.
Edwin, King of Deira, has died some years ago, his great rival, Cadwallon ap Cadfan, king of Gwynedd, after ravaging the north with his armies, was killed by Oswald the new lord of the north, the ambitious son of Æthelfrith and Edwin's sister, he now rules on Bernacia, Deira and Elmet.
Oswald the powerful, who has proclaimed Brytenwalda, who is willing to dispute the title?, Who is willing to confront the most powerful king in Britain?
The world is at war, only respects the law of the sword and spear. There are realms that are born and die every single day, kings die on the battle fields.
On East, the Angles, Jutes consolidate domains and claim for more land.
On South, the Saxons, led by Cynegils, have teamed up with Oswald, cornering Penda, king of the Angles de Mierce, The March. Will Mierce resist being surrounded by enemies?
King Penda is bloody and violent, many kings have been killed by his sword and promises to kill many more. He call to meet the men under his command to go to war.
Meanwhile, Christianity extending from Centware (Jute Kingdom), and it is converting the barbarians.
Pushed against the coast, the Welsh are fighting for every inch of land, but are too divided, dreaming of the return of a king to unify all and lead to the final victory, they dream with an incoming King Arthur. But Arthur is dead, and all eyes look to Cynddylan, the king of Pengwern, brave as a lion, but unable to join under his banner all the other kings.
And Gwynedd, a fertile kingdom in great warriors, is silent, unable to hear the sound of the advancing armies threatening their land. Gwynedd cry to Great Cadwallon, scourge of the Angles and Saxons, who has left a son, a King 3 year old.
In the snowy lands of the North, fight the Irish, Dal Riata, and the Picts. Their kings share blood, but the Irish are invading in land of Cait, kingdom of the Picts. The Picts, with their faces painted and their female warriors, are now united under one king and they are stronger than ever.
Across the sea, in Ireland, Domnaill mac Aedo, of Ui Neill´s clan has emerged as High King in Temair after defeating his enemies. But it isnt more than a prestigious title that recognizes him as the most powerful of the island. Around him, clans are fighting for land, women and cattle in fratricidal wars. The war in Ireland is endemic.
Who can bring light to this world of war and misery?

Cynegils of Wessex
Cynegils [kyneɣɪls] was King of Wessex from c. 611 to c. 642. Cynegils is traditionally considered to have been King of Wessex, but the familiar kingdoms of the so-called Heptarchy had not yet formed from the patchwork of smaller kingdoms in his lifetime. The later kingdom of Wessex was centred on the counties of Hampshire, Dorset, Somerset, and Wiltshire, but the evidence of the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle is that the kingdom of Cynegils was located on the upper River Thames, extending into northern Wiltshire and Somerset, southern Gloucestershire and Oxfordshire, and western Berkshire, with Dorchester-on-Thames as one of the major royal sites. This region, probably connected to the early tribal grouping known as the Gewisse, a term used by Bede for the West Saxons, lay on the frontier between the later kingdoms of Wessex and Mercia.

It appears that Cynegils became king on the death of King Ceolwulf c. 611. His relationship to Ceolwulf is uncertain. Cynegils is variously described in West Saxon sources as being a son of Ceolwulf, a son of Ceol brother of Ceolwulf, a son of Ceola son of Cutha, a son of Cuthwine son of Ceawlin, and a son of Cuthwulf son of Cuthwine. Several of the sources give Cynegils a brother named Ceolwald, described as the grandfather of King Ine. Although the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle and Wessex king lists portray the West Saxons as ruled by a single king, it is likely that the kingship was shared between two or more kings.

A recent walk I took up Win Hill towards Kinder Scout on 14th August 2011. As you can see, the Heather was in full bloom and the weather was perfect for walking, despite having to carry all the equipment.
