Orthodoxy & Scripture 1: Septuagint vs. Masoretic
This video is part one to a series I'm doing on Holy Scripture. In this video, I discuss the Old Testament, paying special attention to why the Orthodox use the Septuagint instead of the Masoretic, as Protestants and Jews use. If you're interested in reading the Septuagint for yourself, visit: ccat.sas.upenn.edu For more information on the Septuagint, including a complete list of quotes from the Septuagint in the New Testament and a comparison with the Masoretic, visit: mysite.verizon.net For a scholarly site with lots of info on the Septuagint, don't miss: www.kalvesmaki.com If you want to learn more about the differences between Orthodox and Protestant understandings of Scripture, you might be interested in following an on-going debate about Sola Scriptura between a Reformed Baptist and myself, at my blog, Pious Fabrications: piousfabrications.blogspot.com If you have any questions, you can e-mail them to me at davidpwithun@yahoo.com Thanks for watching!

The Septuagint
Historical evidence that the Septuagint was know the Greek speaking Jews before the birth, death, resurrection and ascension of Jesus. And it was known to Greek Speaking Jews before the Council of Javneh in AD 90 decided the Canon for the Hebrew Canon. It is also known to the Ethiopian Jews who accept it as canon today. This is to respond to those who think the Catholic Church has added to the Bible, when in fact the Septuagint was Sacred among the Greek Speaking Jews and the Ethiopian Jews. The books within it are known in other Ancient text and writings as mentioned in the video. All Seven of the deuterocanonical books rejected when the Hebrew Bible was decided are found in the Dead Sea Scrolls. Some scholars thought the LXX was unique to the Alexandrian Greek-Jewish people, but fragments of all of them have been found in Hebrew and or Aramaic among the Dead Sea Scrolls. This means they had a wide and multi-lingual circulation among the Jewish people. There are people who claim that the Council of Javneh never happened. But, these Jewish Encyclopedia's say differently. (The Encyclopedia of Judaism, vol 15 page 117)" says that the limit of the third part (Writings) was not finalized until mid of second century. In addition, the Hebrew Canon was also not accepted by Ethiopian Jews who accept Septuagint to this day " (Encyclopedia Judaica, vol. 6, p. 1146)"There is no evidence that the Rabbis at the council of Javneh (90A.D.), had the legitimate authority to determine ...

KJV Onlyist Error: The Septuagint
KJV Onlyists believe that the KJV translators solely used the Masoretic Hebrew text. However, it is very clear that their translation was frequently augmented by the 2000 year old Greek Septuagint. While there are many passages that can be used to show this, I will use Psalm 22:17, verse 16 in the King James Bible, as a demonstration. The Masoretic Hebrew text for this passage reads; For dogs have surrounded me, the assembly of the wicked have encircled me, like a lion at my hands and my feet. Now lets take a look at the LXX, which reads; For many dogs have compassed me, the assembly of the wicked doers has beset me round, they pierced my hand and my feet. Now let's compare these with the KJV; For dogs have compassed me: the assembly of the wicked have inclosed me: they pierced my hands and my feet. It is pretty obvious that the KJV translators were using the Septuagint in this verse as the Masoretic Hebrew texts reads 'like a lion,' while the Septuagint has 'they pierced.'

The Will of God Isn't...but Is...pt 2
This message will attempt to shed light on two things:
1. What the Will of God Isn’t
2. What the Will of God Is
First we must see the three major components of God’s Will:
LIVING IN THE WILL OF GOD WILL ALWAYS INVOLVE THESE THREE COMPONENTS:
1. Eternal Life
And this is eternal life, that they know you the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent. John 17:3
To know the Will of God will involve having eternal life, which means to know God. So here is circular reasoning-To Know God’s Will You must Know God. To Know God you must have Eternal Life. To have eternal life, you must know God. To know God’s will is to know God.
2. Wisdom
that their hearts may be encouraged…to reach all the riches of full assurance of understanding and the knowledge of God’s mystery, which is Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. … Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him, Colossians 2:2-6
that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you a spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of him, Ephesians 1:17
Wisdom is “seeing Life from God’s Point of View.” Knowing God’s Will will always involve seeing Life from His point of View. After all, it is His Will!
Wisdom will always involve more of Jesus Christ in your life, for in Christ are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.
Living in the will of God will always involve walking in Jesus Christ.
Now since living in the Will of God involves Wisdom I need to point out how you get wisdom.
JAMES GIVES THIS ADVICE ABOUT GETTING WISDOM
Jas 1:5-8 If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him. But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind. For that person must not suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.
You must want to see life from God’s point of view badly enough that you are willing to forsake everything this world has to offer. If you ask for wisdom, if you ask to live in God’s will, yet part of you wants this or wants that, contrary to God’s righteousness, then you will not get wisdom from God. You will not see life from His point of view. You will continue to be like the waves of the sea, tossing to and fro, lost from God’s will.
3. Faith
Living in the Will of God involves pleasing God. And Hebrews 11:6 says without Faith it is impossible to please God. By faith Moses left Egypt, not being afraid of the anger of the king, for he endured as seeing him who is invisible. Hebrews 11:27. Faith allows us to See God and what He wants to do with our lives.
Faith in your life will do Two Things:
1. Faith will allow you to see God behind everything that happens in your life.
2. Faith keeps you in a place where you are not sure what will happen next.
• If you can see the road ahead you don’t need to Trust God.
Living in the Will of God will always involve eternal life, wisdom and faith.
WHERE DO WE START?
In order to know what the Will of God is, we must know what it isn’t. Here are four common Falsehoods about the Will of God:
FALSEHOOD #1: God Wants Us to Know the Future
This is the biggest mistake we Christians make with regard to living in the Will of God.
Just because God has led a certain way does not guarantee the end result. We keep trying to look down the road so we can figure out the direction God is taking us.
It is rarely God’s will for you to know your entire personal future.
God doesn’t light the entire road. He promises just enough light for your step ahead.
Psalm 119:105 “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path.”
In fact they made little oil lamps that attached to your ankles. This would allow you to carry a load and still have light. But it was only enough light for one step.
So this verse pictures a man in total darkness walking along a dangerous trail. There is no moon in the sky. Darkness clings to him. His only light comes from the lamp strapped to his ankle. When he takes that step, what happens to the light? It goes forward one more step. The light is not bright enough to illuminate even five feet ahead.
Let’s face the truth–we want to know the future. At least we think we do. We want to know what is going to happen next year, so we can be ready in advance. But God doesn’t play that game with us.
The Bible says, “The secret things belong to the LORD our God” (Deuteronomy 29:29).
Does he know what will happen tomorrow? Yes, he does; but he’s not telling anyone else about it. Or to put it in familiar terms, does God have a blueprint for your life? Yes, he does; but there is no blueprint room where you can go to get a copy.
Suppose God were to offer you a folder with the details of your life (and for your loved ones also) for the next 10 years. Would you ta

What Happens When Christians Die?
Heaven: The Revelation – What Happens When Christians Die?
Pam Weddings’s brush with death came on a north Georgia river more than 40 years ago. She was a 19-year-old student at the University of Georgia. She says she and her boyfriend, Jim, were whitewater rafting on a high, fast-moving river.
"We lost our oars,” Pam recalled. “There was no way to navigate; we were just riding with the current then."
From a hilltop, they saw people waving.
"And when we got up closer, we could tell they weren't waving,” Pam explained. “They were saying, ‘Get out! Go away! Go back!’"
Suddenly, around a bend, Pam says they were sucked over a dam and into a vortex of water below. She says she was surrounded by darkness.
"And my eyes were opened, in pitch black, I felt churning all around me. But I didn't feel like I was churning," she explained.
Pam remembers thinking she must be dead. She says she saw images come up in front of her, some of them of loved ones like her father, who died when she was 7. Then she says she saw light, getting closer and closer.
"It was the most incredibly peaceful, I keep saying that word, because I've never felt anything like that,” Pam described. “It was really beautiful and nurturing, just complete peace."
Wedding says she remembered thinking she was okay.
“At that instant, that I said, ‘Its okay, I'll go,’” she said. “I felt a hand grab me strongly on the wrist and pull me up out."
Barbara Harris-Whitfield believes she too got a taste of dying. It happened 37 years ago when she was 32. She was in a hospital bed two days after undergoing spine surgery.
Barbara says she floated out of her body, and into a tunnel that was filling with light.
"And then, my grandmother was there,” Barbara explained. “Now my grandmother had been dead for 14 years, and I had never once thought of her existing beyond her death. I was an atheist up until this moment."
Harris says her grandmother wrapped her arms around her.
"We were talking without words and she was letting me know she would always be there waiting for me,” Barbara said. “And then the next thing I knew, I was back in my body, back in the circle bed, and it happened again a week later."
Dr. Raymond Moody has documented hundreds of stories like those of Pam and Barbara in a half-dozen books. His latest is called ‘Glimpses of Eternity’.
"I've talked with literally thousands of people from all over the world who've been to the brink of death and come back with these astonishing stories," Dr. Moody said.
He says what is so striking is that so many people describe the same experience.
"And I think that what these near-death experiences do is they give us hope that what we call death is not the end, but a transition into some other reality," Dr. Moody said.
VITAL THAT WE KNOW WHAT HAPPENS WHEN WE DIE.
Paul wanted the Thessalonians to know exactly what happens.
However, we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about those who are asleep, that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope. 1 Thessalonians 4:13
Knowing what happens to our loved ones when they die in Jesus Christ will give us a strength which will let the world know the power of Jesus Christ.
WHERE DO BELIEVERS GO?
TO UNDER STAND WHAT HAPPENS TO US, WE MUST BECOME AWARE OF WHERE WE ARE GOING.
When You Die you will go to one of two places. There is no soul sleep. There is no purgatory. There is no second chance.
DYING THIEF ON CROSS
One of the criminals who were hanged railed at him, saying, “Are you not the Christ? Save yourself and us!” But the other rebuked him, saying, “Do you not fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation? And we indeed justly, for we are receiving the due reward of our deeds; but this man has done nothing wrong.” And he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” And he said to him, “Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise.” Luke 23:39-43
PAUL
I am hard pressed between the two. My desire is to depart and be with Christ, for that is far better. Philippians 1:23
Yes, we are of good courage, and we would rather be away from the body and at home with the Lord. 2 Corinthians 5:8
THERE ARE TWO HEAVENS:
We need to be aware that there is actually two heavens we need to learn about. There is the Present Heaven, where God dwells now, and there will be an eternal heaven that will be created once the Word of God has been totally fulfilled.
The Present (Intermediate) Heaven
The Eternal Heaven
THE TRANSITIONAL PERIOD
When a believer dies, there will be a transitional period of a temporary nature. Our redemption will not be complete, and we will be in a transitional state.
INTERMEDIATE HEAVEN IS NOT OUR FINAL DESTINATION
Will we live in Heaven forever? Absolutely, just not in the same place.
When we die, we will go to Present (or Intermediate) heaven.
Once the Scriptures have been fulfilled, there will be a New Heaven and a New Earth, and the two

Jesus the True Light of Christmas
The IT department had been working 12 hour days for four weeks in a row. Two guys were talking about how badly they needed some time off, but until their project was completed, time off was prohibited.
One of the guys suddenly lifted his head. "I know how to get some time off work" the man whispered.
"How?" asked the second worker.
Instead of answering, the man quickly looked around. No sign of his Boss. He jumped up on his desk, kicked out a couple of ceiling tiles and hoisted himself up. "Look!" he hissed, then swinging his legs over a metal pipe, hung upside down.
Within seconds, the Boss emerged from his office at the far end of the floor. He saw the worker hanging from the ceiling, and asked him what on earth he thought he was doing.
"I'm a light bulb" answered the public servant.
"I think you need some time off," barked the Boss. "Get out of here - that's an order - and I don't want to see you back here for two days! You understand me?"
"Yes sir", the public servant answered meekly, then jumped down, logged off his computer and left.
The second worker was hot on his heels.
"Where do you think you're going?" the boss asked.
"Home," he said lightly. "I can't work in the dark."
Christmas time is all about the lights! Most of us take time to drive around and see the pretty lights. Most of us put up a tree decorated with pretty lights. We may even put them up on our house. Some of us leave them up all year.
The next few weeks we will be looking at the Light of Jesus Christ. As such, I was trying to find out if there was such a thing a "pure light". The more I researched, the more my brain was fried.
First of all, to know what 'light' is, you have to study the following:
• Particle theory
• Wave Theory
• Electromagnetic theory
• Quantum theory
• Wave–particle duality
• Quantum electrodynamics
Plus, there is light we can see and there is light we cannot see with the naked eye. Imagine a light which you can not see.
Now if there is any thing such as pure light, it is achieved by a process called: "light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation". We hear the abbreviation: LASER.
But even with LASERS light is not always pure, and there are different methods of light amplification. This requires the study of:
• Continuous wave operation
• Pulsed operation
• Q-switching
• Mode-locking
• Pulsed pumping
My mind grew numb reading about light, and I never could get a grasp on if there is such a thing as naturally occuring "pure light".
I did discover something known as "Autosomal Dominant Compelling Helioophthalmic Outburst Syndrome" People with ACHOO syndrome start sneezing when suddenly exposed to bright light, (usually mutliple times) consecutively. The condition affects 18-35% of the human population.(Wikipedia)
I DID FIND OUT WHAT "TRUE LIGHT" IS:
JOHN 1:6-9 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. 7 He came as a witness, to bear witness about the light, that all might believe through him. 8 He was not the light, but came to bear witness about the light. 9 The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world
John the Baptist was called to prepare the way for the true light.
WHAT IS "TRUE LIGHT"?
True used here, means real, genuine, not fake, not artificial.
True, conformed to truth (John 4:37; 19:35). In the sense of real, unfeigned, not fictitious (John 17:3, meaning the only true God, not feigned like idols; 1 Thess. 1:9; 1 John 5:20; Rev. 3:7; Sept.: 2 Chr. 15:3; Isa. 65:16). Spoken of what is true in itself, genuine, real, as opposed to that which is false, (pseudés )
Now this "true Light" is also called "great light in Isa 9:2:
ISAIAH 9:2 “The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death a light has dawned.”
Now if Jesus is the True Light and the Great Light, then that means there is a fake light, or an artificial light, or a light which is lesser in its power and effect.
What makes Jesus Christ the True Light. And here the Bible defines what makes True Light, Pure Light, Great Light. Look to the beginning verses of John:
JOHN 1:1-5 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. 4 In him was life, and the life was the light of men. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
Verse 4&5 tells us what makes light true and great-it produces life in mankind, and the darkness does not overcome it.
I. The Character of the True Light
A.THE TRUE LIGHT IS LIFE.
Normal living things need light to grow. With very rare exceptions do things grow in absolute darkness. Most of us know about "photosynthesis." The word ‘photo’ means ‘light,’ and the word synthesis means ‘to put together.’ Green plants produce food by putting chemicals together with light.
It is light that causes plants to p

Translating the Bible - The Septuagint
The Septuagint is the first and earliest translation of the Hebrew Bible into another language, that of Koine Greek. This work was probably begun around the 3rd century BCE. The Jewish diaspora to the Hellenistic world meant that many Jews did not speak Hebrew all that well. Therefore, a translation was needed. Greek was considered a lingua franca, or language that people from many different areas with different mother tongues could communicate. Therefore, Greek was the perfect language for translation. The word "septuagint" is Latin for "seventy." This name comes from the legendary account that the work was translated by seventy or seventy-two sages.
