Paul Klee
Paul Klee (18 December 1879 29 June 1940) was a Swiss painter of German nationality. His highly individual style was influenced by movements in art that included expressionism, cubism, and surrealism. He was, as well, a student of orientalism. Klee was a natural draftsman who experimented with and eventually mastered color theory, and wrote extensively about it. His works reflect his dry humor and his sometimes child-like perspective, his personal moods and beliefs, and his musicality. He and his friend, the Russian painter Wassily Kandinsky, both taught at the German Bauhaus school of art and architecture.

PAUL KLEE and KANT: AESTHETICS
A reading of modernist artist (Bauhaus school) Paul Klee's writing on art illustrating Kant's controversial but influential view that the subjective emotional response to art is a gateway to a higher realm of non-rational, non-empirical sublimity and moral truth. A stark opposition to the realistic/rationalist view of art, perception and understanding which came from the enlightenment. This is posted here to illustrate some points in the lecture and seminar discussion of German idealism in the 19th century - Kant, Fichte, Hegel, Fauerbach and the associated romantic movement in poetry, music and art. (Notably in the visual arts the increasing trend to abstraction under the influence of Kantian aesthetics). Note the contradiction between empiricist 'sense' and romantic 'sensibility' which mirrors Kant's epistemological division of the contingent universe into the noumenal and the phenomenal - each object having a nature 'in itself' which is beyond (ordinary) human perception (perhaps 'visible' only to artists or religious aesthetes) and a perceived, mundane ordinary phenomenal existence. This divide is central to European high culture from the time of Kant onwards.

Paul Klee - Pictorial architecture red, yellow, blue, 1923
The oil painting »Bildarchitectur rot gelb blau«, 1923, [Pictorial architecture red, yellow, blue] is one of the »square pictures« that Paul Klee worked on during his time at the Bauhaus in Weimar, and which he systematised in his Dessau Bauhaus period (1927--1930). More than ten years earlier, Klee had composed his first watercolours out of coloured geometric shapes, and he had later transferred the principle into poetic variations. The »square pictures« of the Bauhaus period are among the few completely non-representational compositions in Klee's oeuvre, and they bear witness to his systematic work on the theory of colour.

Paul Klee

Partitura is a custom software built in vvvv to generate realtime graphics aimed at visualising sound. . The term “Partitura” (score) implies a connection with music, and this metaphor is the main focus of the project. Partitura aims to create a new system for translating sound into visual forms. Inspired by the studies of artists such as Kandinsky, Paul Klee, Oscar Fischinger and Norman McLaren, the images generated by Partitura are based on a precise and coherent system of relationships between various types of geometries. The main characteristic of this system is its horizontal linear structure, like that of a musical score. It is along this linear environment that the different classes of abstract elements are created and evolve over time according to the sound. Partitura creates endless ever-evolving abstract landscapes that can respond to musical structures, audio analysis and manual gestural inputs. It is an instrument that visualises sound with both the freedom of spontaneous personal interpretation/improvisation and at the same time maintaining the automations and triggers of mathematical precision.
Partitura defines a coherent language of its own for the creation of new contemporary abstractions. It is within this system that Partitura creates worlds that expand from a single dot to multiple galaxies, from minimalism to complexity, from rigid to elastic, from solid to liquid, from angular to smoothness, from tentative to boldness, from calm to agitation, from slow to fast, from desaturated to saturation, from dark to lightness, from predictable to unpredictability. Literally ‘everything’ and its opposite... just like a musical flow.

His works reflect his dry humor and his sometimes child-like perspective, his personal moods and beliefs, and his musicality. Klee and his friend Wassily Kandinsky taught at the German Bauhaus school of art and architecture. From nearly the start, the Nazi movement denounced the Bauhaus for its "degererate art " or "entartete kunst " and in 1933 the Bauhaus was finally shut down. In 1937, seventeen of Klee's pictures were included in an exhibition of degenerate art and 102 of his works in public collections were seized by the Nazis.
