Saudi invasion of Bahrain: The Alliance against Revolutions
a seminar titled: Saudi invasion of Bahrain: The Alliance against Revolutions by Prof. Madawi Al-Rasheed* & Dr. Kristian Ulrichsen** On 14th March 2011 Saudi forces crossed the border with Bahrain and entered the country to crush the Revolution that had started one month earlier. The deafening silence by the West on the Saudi occupation of Bahrain has been shameful. The double standard policy of the West has shocked anyone with clear conscience. The West has abandoned its support for the pro-democracy movement in Bahrain and opted to support the Gulf monarchies that cannot be reformed or modernised in any shape or form. Date: Tuesday, 20th March 2012 Time: 6.30pm Venue: Abrar House, 45 Crawford Place, W1H 4LP * Madawi Al-Rasheed is Professor of Anthropology of Religion at King's College, London. Her research focuses on history, society, religion and politics in Saudi Arabia and the Gulf, Middle Eastern Christian minorities, Arab migration, Islamist movements, and state and gender relations. Recent publications include Politics in an Arabian Oasis (IB Tauris 1991), A History of Saudi Arabia (second edition CUP 2010), Counter Narratives: History, Contemporary Society and Politics in Saudi Arabia and Yemen (Palgrave 2004),Transnational Connections and the Arab Gulf (Routledge 2005), Contesting the Saudi State: Islamic Voices from a New Generation (CUP 2007), Kingdom without Borders: Saudi Political, Religious and Media Frontiers (Hurst 2008) and Dying for Faith: Religiously ...

Professor Amin Saikal AM: Afghanistan on the brink
Professor Amin Saikal AM fom the Centre for Arab and Islamic Studies ANU gives a public lecture on 'Afghanistan on the brink'. Afghanistan is in a state of crisis. The same applies to the current US-led population-centric counter-insurgency strategy in dealing with this crisis. Based on the available evidence, the situation continues to favour the Taliban and their supporters, most importantly Pakistan, or more specifically its powerful military intelligence agency, the Intra-Services Intelligence Agency (ISI). The US is now locked in what is shaping up as a quagmire, with an Afghan syndrome in the making parallel to the Vietnam War. Professor Amin Saikal AM is Professor of Political Science and Director of the Centre for Arab and Islamic Studies at ANU. He is the author of numerous works on the Middle East, Central Asia and Russia, including The Rise and Fall of the Shah: Iran from Autocracy to Religious Rule (Princeton University Press, 2009), Modern Afghanistan: A History of Struggle and Survival (IB Tauris, 2006) and Islam and the West: Conflict or Co-operation? (London: Palgrave Macmillan, 2003). He is also a frequent commentator on radio and television.

Egypt: Mubarak's legacy and its implications - Amin Saikal at ANU, 10 Feb 2011
Professor Amin Saikal, Director of the Centre for Arab and Islamic Studies at The Australian National University gives this public lecture: 'Egypt: Mubarek's legacy and its implications' at the University on 10 February 2011. Western-backed President Hosni Mubarak has a lot to answer for when it comes to what his former foreign minister, Amr Musa, recently called 'the Arab broken soul'. Mubarak leaves Egypt riddled with poverty, corruption, socio-economic disparities, political uncertainties and foreign policy dilemmas. The popular rising against him is very much reminiscent of the Iranian revolution of 1978/79 that toppled the pro-Western regime of the Shah and set Iran on a turbulent course of theocratic development, and anti-US posture. Egypt is a pivotal state in the Arab world. Whatever direction it takes, it is bound to affect the regional status quo, confronting the US and its allies (most importantly Israel) with serious quandaries. In this public lecture Professor Amin Saikal discusses Mubarak's legacy and its consequences for Egypt, the region and beyond. Amin Saikal is Professor of Political Science and Director of the Centre for Arab and Islamic Studies (the Middle East and Central Asia) at The Australian National University. Professor Saikal has been a visiting fellow at Princeton University, Cambridge University, and the Institute of Development Studies at the University of Sussex, as well as a Rockefeller Foundation Fellow in International Relations (1983 ...

Genocide of Azeris by Armenians!
On the night of February 25-26, 1992, Armenian armed forces surrounded and attacked the town of Khojaly in the Nagorno-Karabakh region of Azerbaijan. Fleeing civilian population of this Azeri-populated town was subjected to killings brutality of which goes beyond any imagination. Over 600 people, including 106 women and 83 children, were tortured to their deaths in freezing temperatures, with hundreds more missing. Some shocking facts of the massacre include a stabbing and forcible removal of fetus from a pregnant woman, blinding and beheading children, maiming elders and shooting them at close ranges. According to Human Rights Watch, Khojaly Massacre was "the largest massacre to date in the conflict" over Nagorno-Karabakh (Human Rights Watch / Helsinki. Azerbaijan: Seven Years of Conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh. New York. 1994) For 16 years after Khojaly, Armenian side officially denies its involvement and refuses to take responsibility for it. Some Armenian groups have even invented alternate stories alleging that Azerbaijanis killed their own people for political aims. Yet the fact of this crime against humanity was recited "proudly" by the Armenian participant of Karabakh war, current prime-minister and president-elect of Armenia, Serzh Sarkissian, as follows: "before Khojali, the Azerbaijanis thought that they were joking with us, they thought that the Armenians were people who could not raise their hand against the civilian population.
