MAJOR REDISCOVERY of Saxon saint and princess: Finding Eanswythe | Time Team Interview
Dani Wootton gets the lowdown on an incredible 1400-year old detective story, concerning the major rediscovery of an early Anglo-Saxon saint and member of the Kentish royal family.
St Eanswythe was the grand-daughter of King Ethelbert of Kent and aunt of the two princes murdered at Eastry (featured in the Time Team episode S13E06). Local legend placed her mortal remains in the local church dedicated to her in Folkestone, Kent. Then, in the 1880s an ancient reliquary casket containing a pile of bones was discovered in a hidden alcove. Could they possibly belong to the early English princess and saint?
Dr Andrew Richardson (Canterbury Archaeological Trust) explains how modern scientific techniques – including carbon dating, isotope analysis and DNA analysis – are shedding light on the disc...

The Life of St. Eanswythe, Abbess of Folkestone, England
The holy Eanswythe, royal daughter in the Kingdom of Kent, reposed in 640 after a short, but extraordinary life of service and prayer. She was fervent in prayer, cared the poor, and even caused a stream to flow uphill bringing her monastery fresh water. While her relics we rediscovered in 1885, in early 2020 scientists have examined her holy bones and confirmed they are most likely that of St. Eanswythe. Of course, the faithful of Folkestone and beyond have known this for some time and continue to find consolation by her holy prayers.
"With gladsome voices and hymns of praise let us extol the venerable Eanswythe, who, setting aside rich princely apparel, gladly put on the mean and lowly habit of a nun; and, in place of the idle pursuits of the royal court, set herself boldly to acquire al...

SAINT OF THE DAY –
Saint Eanswith -
On this day September 12 2023, we commemorate the life and sanctity of Saint Eanswith, a remarkable and often overlooked figure in the annals of Christian history. Born in the early seventh century, she hailed from the kingdom of Kent in what is now modern-day England. A Medieval Church with Royal Anglo-Saxon Roots - St Eanswythe's in Folkestone

"With gladsome voices and hymns of praise let us extol the venerable Eanswythe, who, setting aside rich princely apparel, gladly put on the mean and lowly habit of a nun; and, in place of the idle pursuits of the royal court, set herself boldly to acquire all the virtues. Wherefore, having pleased Christ by her charity and love, she ever intercedeth with Him to have mercy on our souls." -Troparion to St. Eanswythe

Her life was one marked by deep piety, humility, and unwavering devotion to the Christian faith.
Eanswith was the daughter of King Eadbald of Kent and Queen Emma. From a young age, she exhibited a strong inclination toward spirituality and a desire to serve God. As she matured, her faith deepened, and it became evident that she was destined for a life of devotion to Christ.
What sets Saint Eanswith apart is her role as a pioneer of monastic life in England. Inspired by the teachings of Saint Augustine of Canterbury, she established one of the earliest known Christian monastic communities for women in the region. This community, known as the "Folkestone nunnery," provided a sanctuary for women seeking a life of prayer, study, and service to the community.
Saint Eanswith's nunnery quickly gained a reputation for its piety and devotion to charitable work. She was known for her care and compassion for the sick, the needy, and travellers passing through. Her teachings emphasised humility, selflessness, and the importance of spreading God's love through acts of kindness.
One of Saint Eanswith's most enduring statements of faith was her belief that, "In every act of charity, we mirror the love of our Lord." This mantra encapsulated her life's work, as she dedicated herself to charitable deeds and sought to instil this virtue in her community of nuns.
Saint Eanswith's legacy lives on through her example of faith, humility, and service to others. Her tireless efforts to establish and nurture a Christian community for women laid the foundation for the spread of monastic life in England, which would go on to have a profound impact on the development of Christianity in the region.
Let us now take a moment in prayerful reflection:
Dear Heavenly Father, we thank you for the life and devotion of Saint Eanswith, who dedicated her life to serving you through acts of charity and the establishment of a monastic community. May her example inspire us to live lives of faith, humility, and compassion, always seeking to mirror your love in our actions. We ask for her intercession and guidance in our own journeys of faith. Amen.
