The Birth of Soul: The Complete Atlantic Rhythm and Blues Recordings is a 3-CD box set compilation by Ray Charles, released in 1991.
In a contemporary review, Peter Watrous of The New York Times said that the box set "tracks the progress of a figure who profoundly changed what was possible in American music." He ranked it as the twelfth best album of 1991.The Birth of Soul was voted the third best reissue of the year in The Village Voice's annual Pazz & Jop critics' poll for 1991.
In 2003, the album was ranked number 54 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. In a retrospective article for the magazine, Robert Christgau wrote that, despite "caveats" such as material repeated on more "economic" releases, The Birth of Soul is "the rockingest Charles long-form you can buy" and remarked on the legacy of its recordings:
Christgau recommended Rhino Entertainment's 1994 compilation album The Best of Ray Charles: The Atlantic Years as a cheaper alternative to the box set.

William Edward John (November 15, 1937 - May 26, 1968), better known by his stage name Little Willie John (sometimes abbreviated LWJ), was an American Rock and Roll, and R&B singer who performed in the 1950s and early 1960s. He is best known for his popular music chart successes with songs such as, "All Around the World" (1955), "Need Your Love So Bad" (1956) and "Fever" the same year, the latter covered in 1958 by Peggy Lee. An important figure in early R&B music, Little Willie John was a 1996 Inductee into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
He was born in Cullendale, Arkansas, one of ten children; many sources erroneously give his middle name as Edgar. His family moved to Detroit, Michigan when he was four, so that his father could pursue factory work. In the late 1940s, the eldest children, including Willie, formed a gospel singing group, and Willie also performed in talent shows, which brought him to the notice of Johnny Otis and, later, musician and producer Henry Glover. After seeing him sing with the Paul "Hucklebuck" Williams orchestra, Glover signed him to a recording contract with King Records in 1955. He was nicknamed "Little Willie" John for his short stature.
Little Willie was a prototype in the development of the British Mark I tank. Constructed in the autumn of 1915 at the behest of the Landships Committee, it was the first completed tank prototype in history. Little Willie is the oldest surviving individual tank, preserved as one of the most famous pieces in the collection of The Tank Museum, Bovington, England.
Work on Little Willie's predecessor was begun in July 1915 by the Landships Committee to meet Great Britain's requirement in World War I for an armoured combat vehicle able to cross a 5-foot (1.5 m) trench. After several other projects with single and triple tracks had failed, on 22 July William Ashbee Tritton, director of the agricultural machinery company William Foster & Company of Lincoln, was given the contract to develop a "Tritton Machine" with two tracks. It had to make use of the track assemblies - lengthened tracks and suspension elements (seven road wheels instead of four) - purchased as fully built units from the Bullock Creeping Grip Tractor Company in Chicago.

[Verse 1:]
Same characters but the show's different,
Just listen, it feels like the soul been missing
I remember copping that compact disc just to take off the wrapping
It was more then rapping
Read credits, till every name's embedded
One day, I'm a be just like them, bet it!
One day, I'm a come and lace the team with their favorite things
When I grace the screen, coasting!
I mean, it's nothing like what I was hoping
No emotion, we just going through the motions
I used to watch the videos just to see the new shit
Wanted to see it first, I thought I'd be exclusive
Remember getting hyped off my first casio
Suped up writing my first verse, it was ass though
Acappella, no beat and a bad flow
Damn I miss the good ol' days, when we had soul!
[Hook:]
When we had soul!
[Beat rides]
[Verse 2:]
I remember each day putting my favorite song on replay
But my tape deck would always eat tapes
I'd put my finger in the middle trying to fix it
Just for the shit to end up sounding twisted
Pressing clothes before school, I was matching
Liked the girl in class, got mad when she was absent
Wasn't a baller and I ain't have no game,
So what could I do besides ignore her?
(OR!) My first fight with no brothers to get
I remember being scared as shit and he had all this lip
And I ain't have hands not a bit, just knew that I ain't wanna get hit
So staring at the clock, I ain't trying to see 3 o'clock hit
But I never found the back door,
(Him) He ended up with a tapped jaw
(As for me) I ended up with that bad broad
Damn, I miss the good ol' days, I wish we had more
[Hook]
[Verse 3:]
Maybe I'm feeling like a kid today
I mean, I used to want to have a house party watching House Party, Kid & Play
I had the low tops kicks and the fade
I remember my first piece of ass from a hot chick
Surprised she gave it to me, was shocked I got it
Ol' girl image of me was all ruined
Had to be thinking "the fuck's this boy doing? "
So hard I flirted just to be all nervous
Wish she could see me now, I'm so perverted!
I tell her "I'm so glad I found you. Are you ready for round two?
Or can I mount you? "
And Ol pic's I used to look like a clown dude,
When I had know idea what I'd amount to
A nigga used to be outta control
Man, I miss the good ol' days, when we used to have soul!
