The mustangs rallied a comeback in the second half with two goals to finish in a 3-2 win over
Perth Amboy, after the
Panthers had been up 2-1 at the end of the first half.
First blood was drawn off a direct free kick in the 8th minute. Standing 40 yards out, panther forward
Gaston Medina delivered a spectacularly accurate cross into the center of the box. As a cluster of players were fighting for position inside, defender
Calderon emerged from the mess, sneaking in like a thief in the night from the Perth Amboy's defense unmarked, perfectly timing the delivery by Medina to chip it into the back of the net.
The mustangs wouldn't take long to answer, as they scored in the 15th minute. On a panther throw-in, Medina accidentally headed the ball to the feet of
JFK midfielder
Miranda. After only one touch to settled the ball, Miranda immediately threaded a through-ball to a running Evangelou, who after multiple times, was surprisingly not offside. On the breakaway, Evangelou darted out past the off-guard defense of Perth Amboy, stood strong after a slide tackle from behind, then struck it past goalkeeper
Rojas at the last second before being taken down
.
In the 24th minute, another goal was after coming off the head of Medina, this time to his teammate,
Alex Moyano. Moyano received the ball from at the 18 yard line with his back to the goal, and without looking spun around to fire the ball as hard as he could. With great luck, his shot was off target, but took an unpredictable bounce off a mustang defender to go right past goalkeeper Sandor into the right corner of the goal.
At the end of the first half, Perth Amboy had a 2-1 lead over JFK.
In the second half, both teams came out hungry and more aggressive than the first
. In the 65th minute, Evangeluo was tripped up inside the box after using fancy footwork to get past his defender. With an opportunity to even the score, Evangelou's penalty kick was blocked away as Rojas made a fantastic save on the shot, giving his team a rush of momentum.
Later on, mustang defender Matos made an excellent slide tackle to steal a pass from Zuniga to Medina.
Quickly,
Perez sent it up to Evangeluo, who delivered a sweet back tap to
Osario, starting a classic give and go play. Bouncing off Osario, Medina picked it up, put a through-ball in for Evangeluo
who connected for his second goal of the match. Had the pass come any a split-second sooner, he would have been called for being in an offside position.
Ten minutes later in the 75th minute, JFK defender
Mikey Perez recovered the ball from a cross that was deflected away, took a shot, recovered it, and then blasted a superlative shot which rocketed into the upper 90s. Golaaaaaazzzzzzzzooooooo!
All the way from 25 yards out, it was by far the most electrifying goal of the match.
Overall, these two teams put on a great performance, displaying tough, smart, and fundamental soccer.
