Durban
Durban (, from itheku meaning 'bay') is the largest city in the South African province of KwaZulu-Natal and the third largest city in the country, forming part of the eThekwini metropolitan municipality. Durban is famous as the busiest port in South Africa and is also a major centre of tourism because of the city's warm subtropical climate and extensive beaches. The city has a population of almost 3.5 million, making Durban the biggest city on the east coast of the African continent. Benjamin Lee Whorf
Benjamin Lee Whorf (April 24, 1897 in Winthrop, Massachusetts – July 26, 1941) was an American linguist. Whorf is widely known for his ideas about linguistic relativity, the hypothesis that language influences thought. An important theme in many of his publications, he has been credited as one of the fathers of this approach, often referred to as the "Sapir-Whorf hypothesis", named after him and his mentor Edward Sapir. Originally educated as a chemical engineer, he took up an interest in linguistics late in his life, studying with Sapir at Yale University. In the last ten years of his life he dedicated his spare time to linguistic studies, doing field work on Native American languages in the US and Mexico. He managed to become one of the most influential linguists of his time, even while still working as a fire inspector for the Hartford Fire Insurance Company. He published a grammar of the Hopi language, studies of Nahuatl dialects, Maya hieroglyphic writing, and the first attempt at a reconstruction of Uto-Aztecan. He also published many articles in the most prestigious linguistic journals, many of them dealing with the ways in which he saw that different linguistic systems affected the thought systems and habitual behaviour of language users.

Gilbert Ryle (19 August 1900, Brighton – 6 October 1976, Oxford), was a British philosopher, and a representative of the generation of British ordinary language philosophers that shared Wittgenstein's approach to philosophical problems, and is principally known for his critique of Cartesian dualism, for which he coined the phrase "the ghost in the machine". Some of his ideas in the philosophy of mind have been referred to as "behaviourist" (not to be confused with the psychological behaviourism of B. F. Skinner and John B. Watson). Ryle's best known book is The Concept of Mind (1949), in which he writes that the "general trend of this book will undoubtedly, and harmlessly, be stigmatised as 'behaviourist'." Ryle, having engaged in detailed study of the key works of Bernard Bolzano, Franz Brentano, Alexius Meinong, Husserl, and Heidegger, himself suggested instead that the book "could be described as a sustained essay in phenomenology, if you are at home with that label."

A sign is a representation of an object that implies a connection between itself and its object. A natural sign bears a causal relation to its object—for instance, thunder is a sign of storm. A conventional sign signifies by agreement, as a full stop signifies the end of a sentence. (This is in contrast to a symbol which stands for another thing, as a flag may be a symbol of a nation).
The way a sign signifies is called semiosis which is a topic of semiotics and philosophy of language.
How a sign is perceived depends upon what is intended or expressed in the semiotic relationship of:
- Signification
- Significance (i.e. meaning)
- Importance
Thus, for example, people may speak of the significance of events, the signification of characters, the meaning of sentences, or the import of a communication. Different ways of relating signs to their objects are called modes of signification.
Uses of conventional signs are varied. Usually the goal is to elicit a response or simply inform. That can be achieved by marking something, displaying a message (i.e. a notice), drawing attention or presenting evidence of an underlying cause (for instance, medical symptoms signify a disease), performing a bodily gesture, etc.

Semiotics, epistemology, logic, and philosophy of language are concerned about the nature of signs, what they are and how they signify. The nature of signs and symbols and significations, their definition, elements, and types, is mainly established by Aristotle, Augustine, and Aquinas. According to these classic sources, significance is a relationship between two sorts of things: signs and the kinds of things they signify (intend, express or mean), where one term necessarily causes something else to come to the mind. Distinguishing natural signs and conventional signs, the traditional theory of signs[who?] sets the following threefold partition of things:
- There are things that are just things, not any sign at all;
- There are things that are also signs of other things (as natural signs of the physical world and mental signs of the mind);
- There are things that are always signs, as languages (natural and artificial) and other cultural nonverbal symbols, as documents, money, ceremonies, and rites.
Thus there are things which may act as signs without any respect to the human agent (the things of the external world, all sorts of indications, evidences, symptoms, and physical signals), there are signs which are always signs (the entities of the mind as ideas and images, thoughts and feelings, constructs and intentions); and there are signs that have to get their signification (as linguistic entities and cultural symbols). So, while natural signs serve as the source of signification, the human mind is the agency through which signs signify naturally occurring things, such as objects, states, qualities, quantities, events, processes, or relationships. Human language and discourse, communication, philosophy, science, logic, mathematics, poetry, theology, and religion are only some of fields of human study and activity where grasping the nature of signs and symbols and patterns of signification may have a decisive value.

- Sign, in astrology: often used to mean the Sun sign
- Sign or signing, in communication: communicating via hand gestures, such as in sign language.
- Gang signal
- Sign, in Tracking (hunting): also known as Spoor (animal); trace evidence left on the ground after passage.
- A signboard.
- A sign, in common use, is an indication that a previously observed event is about to occur again
- Sign, in divination and religion: an omen, an event or occurrence believed to foretell the future
- Sign, in ontology and spirituality: a coincidence; see synchronicity
- Sign (linguistics): a combination of a concept and a sound-image described by Ferdinand de Saussure
- In mathematics, the sign of a number tells whether it is positive or negative. Also, the sign of a permutation tells whether it is the product of an even or odd number of transpositions.

Kathryn Felicia Day[2] (born on June 28, 1979[1]) is an American actress and singer, known for her work as "Vi" on the TV series Buffy the Vampire Slayer and for parts in movies such as Bring It On Again and June, as well as the Internet musical, Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog. Day is also the star, script writer and producer of the original web series The Guild, a show loosely based on her life as a gamer. Day began her acting career at the age of 7 when she starred as Scout in a local production of To Kill a Mockingbird. She studied operatic singing and ballet professionally, performing at concerts and competitions nationwide. Home-schooled throughout much of her childhood, she began college at the age of 16.[4]
She was a National Merit Scholar (1995)[5] and graduated as valedictorian of her class. [4][6] An accomplished violinist,[4] Day was accepted to the Juilliard School of Music but chose to attend the University of Texas at Austin on a full scholarship in violin performance. She double majored in mathematics and music performance.[7][6]
Day is an avid player of a wide variety of video game genres. Much of her work on The Guild web series was based on her personal experience with video games.[8]

After graduation, Day moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in acting. She landed several roles in various short and independent films, as well as commercials and guest spots on television shows, including Undeclared and Maybe It's Me. These parts propelled her to larger roles: a part in the film Bring It On Again, the starring role in June, and a recurring guest spot as potential Slayer Vi on television's Buffy the Vampire Slayer, a recurring role that is still occasionally utilized in that show's eighth season comic book series.

Day is the creator, writer, and star of The Guild, a web series which started airing its fifth season in July 2011. The first season was primarily hosted on YouTube where it garnered millions of views.[9] Its second season premiered on Microsoft's three major video channels Xbox Live, MSN Video and The Zune Marketplace after Microsoft made a deal with The Guild, allowing Day, her cast, and her crew to be paid for their work. Day also created a song and music video called "(Do You Wanna Date My) Avatar", featuring the cast dressed up as their in-game personae. The final moments of the music video itself also detailed that the release date for the 3rd season of Day's The Guild would be August 25, 2009. A second song and video "Game On" was released prior to the premiere of the 4th season of The Guild.
The Guild has won multiple awards, including the Greenlight Award for Best Original Digital Series Production at the South by Southwest festivals,[10] the YouTube Video Award for Best Series,[11] the Yahoo! Video Award for Best Series,[12] and 2009 Streamy Awards for Best Comedy Web Series, Best Female Actor in a Comedy Web Series, and Best Ensemble Cast in a Web Series.[13]

In July 2008, Day starred as Penny in the three-part web-based musical Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog (created by Joss Whedon, who also created Firefly and Buffy the Vampire Slayer in which Day has a minor role as the potential slayer Vi during the seventh season).[14] Day was featured as a patient in the episode "Not Cancer" of the medical drama House,[15] and had a guest starring role in the sci-fi drama Dollhouse's unaired episode "Epitaph One",[16] as well as its series finale "Epitaph Two."[17] In 2008, Day was featured in a series of commercials for Sears.[18][19] She also appeared in the first of the revitalized Cheetos commercials.[20] In the series Lie to Me, on the episode called "Tractor Man", airing December 14, 2009, Day sang a song called "White Lie" alongside Brendan Hines.[citation needed] Day starred in the Syfy film adaption of the saga Little Red Riding Hood, called Red;[21] it was produced by Angela Mancuso.[22] Day also played the continuing role of Dr. Holly Marten in the Syfy channel's original series, Eureka, appearing for 10 episodes until episode 2 of series 5.
Day also starred in Guild co-star Sandeep Parikh's web-series The Legend of Neil, in which she portrayed a Fairy. She sings in the second season musical episode, in which she obliquely references her history of internet musicals.
Day lent her voice to the character Veronica Santangelo in the video game Fallout: New Vegas.
In February 2011, Day announced that she would be starring in a new web miniseries. Called Dragon Age: Redemption, it is based on the Dragon Age video games made by BioWare[23] and aired on October 10, 2011.[24] She also voices the elf Tallis, the protagonist of the Dragon Age downloadable content "Mark of the Assassin".
In March 2012, Day announced that she would be launching a premium YouTube channel, "Geek & Sundry," on April 2. [25]
In April 2012 it was announced that Day will host the 2012 IndieCade Awards Ceremony on October 4th, 2012. [26]
On April 29, 2012 she also appeared on the YouTube show MyMusic as a Norwegian Black Metal singer named Gorgol[27].

During the inaugural Streamy Awards held in Los Angeles on March 28, 2009, Day received the award for the "Best Female Actor in a Comedy" for her work as protagonist Cyd Sherman in The Guild, and won the same award again in 2010.[29] She was also recognized for her work on Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog in 2009.

Michael "Mike" Morhaime (born 1966) is the president and a co-founder of Blizzard Entertainment (originally founded in 1991 as Silicon & Synapse), a video game developer located in Irvine, California, currently owned by Activision Blizzard. He is also an alumnus of Triangle Fraternity[1] and received his bachelor's degree in 1990 from UCLA.[2][3]
In 2008 Morhaime was honored at the 59th Annual Technology & Engineering Emmy Awards for Blizzard’s creation of World of Warcraft. Along with Don Daglow of Stormfront Studios and John Carmack of id Software, Morhaime is one of only three designers or producers to accept awards at both the Technology & Engineering Emmy Awards and at the Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences Interactive Achievement Awards.
Morhaime plays poker and reached 2nd place in edition 2006 of DICE's Celebrity Poker Tournament. In the last round, Mike faced Scott Fischman and Perry Friedman (World Series of Poker professionals), as well as Ray Muzyka, co-founder and CEO of video game developer Bioware. After a dramatic 45-minute game, Ray emerged victorious, with Morhaime placing 2nd overall in the tournament.[4]
Morhaime graduated from Granada Hills High School in 1985. Morhaime is also a member of L90ETC, a Metal Band formed of and by Blizzard Employees, where he plays bass. His avatar is a male Troll, Mai'Kyl. He also appears in animated form in the South Park episode "Make Love, Not Warcraft," which deals with World of Warcraft.
In 2008, Morhaime was inducted into the Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences' Hall of Fame.[5]

Bill Prady (born June 7, 1960) is a television writer and producer who has worked on American sitcoms and variety programs, including Married... with Children, Dream On, Star Trek: Voyager, Dharma & Greg, and The Gilmore Girls and co-created The Big Bang Theory.

He began his writing career working for Jim Henson's Muppets. During his tenure at The Muppets, he was visually caricatured as the puppet "Chip" (The Jim Henson Hour).[1] In 1991, Prady was nominated for an Emmy award for co-writing the posthumous tribute to Jim Henson entitled "The Muppets Celebrate Jim Henson."[2]
He wrote the Disney theme Park attractions Jim Henson's Muppet*Vision 3D and Honey, I Shrunk the Audience.
He is currently the executive producer and co-creator of the CBS sitcom The Big Bang Theory.
Personal life[link]
Prady is one of a number of graduates of the Cranbrook Schools in Bloomfield Hills, MI currently working in entertainment (others include actors Selma Blair and Douglas Sills, writer Todd A. Kessler and former ABC president Stuart Bloomberg).[3] In 2009, he was presented with the schools' Distinguished Alumni award.[4] He attended Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan.[5]
In 2003, he was one of 135 candidates who ran for California governor in the 2003 California gubernatorial recall election, receiving 474 votes.[6]
Prady's "nerd cred" is often attributed to his having been a Z80 programmer at The Small Computer Company.[7]
In 2010, Prady was given honorary membership in the Royal Canadian Institute for the Advancement of Science.[8]
