Meet the Leader -- Interview with HE Mary Robinson Former President of Ireland
President Mary Robinson was elected President of the Republic of Ireland in 1990. She held office from December 3, 1990 to September 12, 1997. Mary Robinson was a principled and transformative leader who continued to fight for equality and women's rights throughout her time in office. She was the first head of state to visit Somalia following the crisis there in 1992, and brought global media attention to the suffering of Rwandans as the first Head of State to visit the country just after the 1994 genocide. As UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (1997-2002), Mary Robinson integrated human rights into the United Nations system and became renowned as an outspoken voice dedicated to investigating and exposing human rights abuses across the world. THE TG4 series on past Irish Presidents, which is entitled simply 'Uachtaráin' and which has been showing for the past six weeks, is fascinating, nostalgic, entertaining and insightful. 'Uachtaráin' is a masterpiece on many levels. For someone who has patience for little TV watching, I have found it compelling to the point of distraction from my impatience. The office of the President of Ireland is usually regarded with a sort of distant respect, as one might regard a kindly old aunt, who is venerable and sweet but past being taken seriously. Until Mary Robinson's inauguration, the presidency was viewed as a retirement home for once-active, perhaps even fiery, politicians, who had earned the kind of distinguished career-conclusion that the position offered. A message from Mary Robinson on Women's Leadership on Gender and Climate Change
MRFCJ believes the gender dimensions of climate change should be highlighted at COP17 in order to secure stronger references to gender in the texts, institutions and mechanisms agreed at the conference. The climate change negotiations are led by a growing group of women leaders and COP17 represents a real opportunity to demonstrate the value of women's leadership. MRFCJ is working to harness this leadership at the international level through a Troika+ of women leaders on gender and climate change. Transcript (closed captioning also available while playing video]: [Mary Robinson]: I want to emphasise very strongly how important it is that we have women's leadership on climate change and I mean women's leadership at all levels. Women at grassroots who are faced with the shocks of climate change which do have different impacts on the lives of men and women, boys and girls. The impact on women is usually much more severe - if there is a prolonged drought, if she has to go further for firewood. If there is flooding, she has to cope with the problems of food, the problems of keeping the family together and if she is a farmer, we know the impact on poor subsistence farmers of the fact that weather is much less predictable. There are weather shocks, there are no seasons. We're seeing it all over Africa. It's something that has been focused on very much by Africa itself under the leadership of South Africa in holding meetings to focus on the gender dimensions. So we have an ...

Visit www.democracynow.org to watch more reports on Democracy Now!, an independent, global news hour that airs weekdays on 1100+ TV and radio stations. We're joined at the UN climate change conference in Doha by Mary Robinson, the first female president of Ireland and former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights. Today Robinson heads the Mary Robinson Foundation—Climate Justice. She is a member of The Elders and the Club of Madrid and the recipient of numerous honors and awards including the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Obama. "I believe this is the biggest human rights issue of the 21st century and I believe that it's a way of addressing issues of development and issues of tackling poverty," Robinson says. "It means that we have to take into account the injustice of the fact that it's the fossil fuels growth in the United States, Europe and other developed parts of the world, which has contributed to undermining development of very poor people, undermining their livelihoods. ... We can actually change the quality of life for both rich and poor countries in a way that doesn't undermine happiness and good livelihoods." Meadowlands Primary receives it's container library - Mary Robinson
Former president of Ireland and United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Mary Robinson, visited Soweto on Wednesday 8 August, where she attended the handover of a container library at Meadowlands Primary School. The refurbished container was donated to the school as part of a countrywide initiative; the Mandela Day Libraries Project, which is being run by the Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory and Breadline Africa, an NGO based in Cape Town. "Literacy and the right to education is a human right," Director of Breadline Africa, Tim Smith said of the initiative, which aims to place 20 container libraries in schools across the country this year. "This will be entirely dependent on public support and finance. We are grateful to Afena Capital and Grandmark International, for their funding of the Meadowlands Primary school container." "Every school should have access to a library and every child should be able to read, write and be given the means to learn; sadly this is not the case in many schools across the country. The library container initiative needs the support of the general public and corporates. We encourage everyone to get involved and help in some way," Smith said. The event ended with Robinson reading to a group of grade seven learners at the school. An organization by the name Room to Read sponsored books for the container library. Other organisations, corporates and sponsors participating in the initiative include Soul City, Brand Identity, LegalWise, JP ...
