Bone cancer survivor Amy White
Amy was diagnosed with bone cancer aged 18 and given just a 20% chance of surviving the illness. The Paisley girl had to undergo very intensive chemotherapy and spent 18-months going through treatment. During this time she began to feel very isolated from her friends so she was delighted when Macmillan Cancer Support gave her a grant that she used to buy a laptop. The computer allowed her to keep in touch with friends via email and social networking sites and helped her cope with her illness. Fluoride & Bone Cancer: Is Harvard Professor Hiding a Link?
Did a Harvard dental professor, who moonlights as a consultant to Colgate, suppress evidence linking fluoride to bone cancer in children? A study done by a PhD candidate at Harvard Medical School was hidden away in their library until someone from the Environmental Working Group and the Fluoride Action Network discovered a copy in 2001. It's conclusions were startling. It is entirely possible that Dr. Douglass may have suppressed the PhD thesis conclusions of Dr. Elise Bassin, at that time a PhD candidate at Harvard Medical School of Dentistry, whose paper and data suggests a very strong link between fluoridation and Osteosarcoma in boys. Bassin has not given interviews concerning her research since the paper's publication, but continues to stand behind her work in that study. At the time of the Bassin study release, Douglass promised he would research and publish another paper showing that there was no connection between cancer and fluoridated water. Because of his connections as a consultant with Colgate Corporation, a company that manufactures and strongly promotes dental products based on fluoride content, Harvard University conducted an in-house investigation to determine if Douglass had displayed any conflict of interest by suppressing his student's information. Of course, Harvard found no problem with their own professor's actions (in-house investigations are comparable to the fox guarding the henhouse). Douglass has since retired from the University. Haynie Spirit Bone Cancer Foundation
Varsity softball player, class officer, senior prom committee chair ― Jennifer Haynie was an inspiration to her classmates at Pearland High School and to everyone she knew. Her future was bright in 2007 as she prepared for graduation and the fall semester at Texas A&M University. But a diagnosis of osteosarcoma, a form of bone cancer, changed Jennifer's life in an instant. As an athlete, Jennifer learned to ignore the occasional aches and pains associated with competition. But in December 2006, she noticed the pain in one of her legs wasn't going away. In fact, it became more intense. "Sometimes the symptoms aren't very strong," says Mary Haynie, Jennifer's mother. "You don't think it's anything serious." Doctors at MD Anderson Children's Cancer Hospital determined the cancer had spread to Jennifer's lungs. Over the next year she underwent radiation therapy, two lung surgeries and monthly chemotherapy. In April 2008, Jennifer and her family faced the devastating news that the cancer had continued to spread. Jennifer succumbed to the disease the following month. Mary's sisters, a source of inspiration and support, encouraged her to continue the fight against osteosarcoma. To honor her daughter's spirit, Mary decided to found the Haynie Spirit Bone Cancer Foundation. "We had such an outpouring of support from friends and family that we thought we needed to turn that into something practical that we could use," she says. In May 2010, the foundation held its first fundraising ...
