X-15 Hypersonic Research At The Edge Of Space
Credit: NASA This joint program by NASA, the Air Force, the Navy, and North American operated the most remarkable of all the rocket research aircraft. Composed of an internal structure of titanium and a skin surface of a chrome-nickel alloy known as Inconel X, the X-15 had its first, unpowered glide flight on June 8, 1959, while the first powered flight took place on September 17, 1959. Because of the large fuel consumption of its rocket engine, the X-15 was air launched from a B-52 aircraft at about 45000 ft and speeds upward of 500 mph. The airplane first set speed records in the Mach 4-6 range with Mach 4.43 on March 7, 1961; Mach 5.27 on June 23, 1961; Mach 6.04 on November 9, 1961; and Mach 6.7 on October 3, 1967. It also set an altitude record of 354200 feet (67 miles) on August 22, 1963, and provided an enormous wealth of data on hypersonic air flow, aerodynamic heating, control and stability at hypersonic speeds, reaction controls for flight above the atmosphere, piloting techniques for reentry, human factors, and flight instrumentation. The highly successful program contributed to the development of the Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo piloted spaceflight programs as well as the Space Shuttle program. The program's final flight was performed on October 24, 1968.

North American X-15 Breaks Mach 4
North American X-15 breaks Mach-4 Day in history Edwards Air Force Base Video 1985 en.wikipedia.org The North American X-15 rocket-powered aircraft/spaceplane was part of the X-series of experimental aircraft, initiated with the Bell X-1, that were made for the USAF, NASA, and the USN. The X-15 set speed and altitude records in the early 1960s, reaching the edge of outer space and returning with valuable data used in aircraft and spacecraft design. As of 2011[update], it holds the official world record for the fastest speed ever reached by a manned rocket powered aircraft. During the X-15 program, 13 of the flights (by eight pilots) met the USAF spaceflight criteria by exceeding the altitude of 50 miles (80.5 km, 264000 ft), thus qualifying the pilots for astronaut status. The USAF pilots qualified for USAF astronaut wings, while the civilian pilots were later awarded NASA astronaut wings. Of all the X-15 missions, two flights (by the same pilot) qualified as space flights per the international (Fédération Aéronautique Internationale) definition of a spaceflight by exceeding 100 kilometres (62.1 mi, 328084 ft) in altitude.

X-15 Record Breaker Update
Three X-15s made 199 flights during a research program which lasted from 1960 through 1968. It was a daring, yet highly successful program that resulted in hundreds of technical reports. It made contributions to the NASA space program of the 1960s and also on the design and flight of the Space Shuttle many years later. An unofficial motto of flight research of the 1940s and 1950s was "higher and faster." By the late 1950s the last frontier of that goal was hypersonic flight (Mach 5+) to the edge of space. It would require a huge leap in aeronautical technology, life support systems and flight planning. The North American X-15 rocket plane was built to meet that challenge. It was designed to fly at speeds up to Mach 6, and altitudes up to 250000 ft. The aircraft went on to reach a maximum speed of Mach 6.7 and a maximum altitude of 354200 ft. Looking at it another way, Mach 6 is about one mile per second, and flight above 264000 ft. qualifies an Air Force pilot for astronaut wings. The plane was air launched by NASA's converted B-52 at 45000 feet and a speed of 500 mph. Generally there were two types of flight profiles: high-speed, or high-altitude. High-speed flights were usually done below an altitude of 100000 feet and flown as a conventional airplane using aerodynamic controls. High-altitude flights began with a steep, full-power climb to leave the atmosphere, followed by up to two minutes of "coasting up" to the peak altitude after the engine was shut down ...

X-15 Rocket Plane - UFO Encounters on the Edge of Space
This presentation focuses on a pair of reported UFO incidents that occurred in 1962 during the X-15 Rocket Plane Research Program. Both these encounters, one during an April, 1962 X-15 flight by NASA test pilot Joseph Walker and the other during a July 1962 flight by USAF test pilot Major Robert White, took place at extremely high altitudes, right on the fringe of space. During Major White's high-altitude test flight, while at apogee he reported sighting and visually tracking an unidentified object "for a full five seconds before it moved away". Two frames of film from the X-15's rear-facing "wing and empennage" stop-motion 16mm camera appear to capture an object (or objects) that seem to match Major White's visual description of the UFO he saw. Several months earlier, during NASA test pilot Joe Walker's X-15 high-altitude flight, cameras aboard captured what Walker later described as being "five or six disc-shaped or cylindrical objects" near his aircraft. During a May 11th, 1962 lecture at the "Second National Conference on the Peaceful Uses of Space Research" in Seattle, Washington, Joe Walker also claimed that one of his mission objectives during his April 1962 flight in the X-15 was to detect and film UFOs at high altitude. During the lecture, Walker showed several photographs to the audience of these UFOs captured on film, although NASA has since only ever made one of these frames public. X-15 Crash Landing (1962)
Courtesy: NASA Langley Research Center On 9 November 1962, an engine failure forced Jack McKay, a NASA research pilot, to make an emergency landing at Mud Lake, Nevada, in the second X-15 (56-6671); its landing gear collapsed and the X-15 flipped over on its back. McKay was promptly rescued by an Air Force medical team standing by near the launch site, and eventually recovered to fly the X-15 again. But his injuries, more serious than at first thought, eventually forced his retirement from NASA. The aircraft was sent back to the manufacturer, where it underwent extensive repairs and modifications. It returned to Edwards in February 1964 as the X-15A-2, with a longer fuselage (52 ft 5 in) and external fuel tanks. The X-15 was flown over a period of nearly 10 years--June 1959 to Oct. 1968--and set the world's unofficial speed and altitude records of 4520 mph (Mach 6.7) and 354200 ft in a program to investigate all aspects of manned hypersonic flight. Information gained from the highly successful X-15 program contributed to the development of the Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo manned spaceflight programs, and also the Space Shuttle program. The X-15s made a total of 199 flights, and were manufactured by North American Aviation. North American X-15A-2, serial number 56-6671, is at the United States Air Force Museum, Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio.

TRIBUTE TO A. SCOTT CROSSFIELD (No. 5 of 5 clips; Scotty went west on April 19, 2006 in an aircraft accident north of Atlanta, GA; he was 84.) Flight number four, resulted in an emergency landing because of an engine fire with structural damage to the fuselage after landing. The X-15 reached MACH 1.00 or 660 MPH and attained an altitude of 45462 feet MSL. Scott Crossfield piloted the X-15 fourteen times; The X-15 flew 199 times; Scott's fourteen were during the first thirty flights. The X-15's first eight flights were piloted by Scott. He flew eleven of the plane's first twelve flights. These five clips are put here in memoriam as we approach the second anniversary of Scott's passing; and to honor Scotty and those of his kind. Scott and the others made it possible for us all to enjoy safe and practical flight. The also set the door to space ajar and paved the way for mankind's further adventures there. X-15- Record Breaker
na joint research program that NASA conducted with the Air Force, the Navy, and North American Aviation, Inc., the X-15 experimental aircraft set the world's unofficial speed and altitude records for crewed flight. Information from the highly successful program contributed to the Mercury, Gemini, Apollo, and Space Shuttle piloted space flight programs. The outer skin of the X-15 was a nickel-chrome alloy called Inconel X, employed in a heat sink structure to withstand the results of aerodynamic heating when the aircraft was flying within the atmosphere. The cabin was made of aluminum and was isolated from the outer structure to keep it cool. NASA FACT SHEET X-15 Accomplishments The distinguished Langley aeronautical researcher John Becker, who was an early advocate of the X-15 program, identified 25 specific accomplishments of the program, including: * First application of hypersonic theory and wind tunnel work to an actual flight vehicle. * First use of reaction controls for attitude control in space. * First reusable super alloy structure capable of withstanding the temperatures and thermal gradients of hypersonic reentry. * Development of a servo-actuated-ball nose flow direction sensor for operation over an extreme range of dynamic pressure and a stagnation air temperature of 1900° F (for accurate measurement of air speed and flow angle at supersonic and hypersonic speeds). * Development of the first practical full pressure suit for pilot protection in space ...
