Rap Genius Lines of the Week From Jay-Z, Beanie Sigel, Prodigy, Torae & Skyzoo

Rap Genius is supplying The BoomBox with the top lyrics from the week and serving a meaning behind the raps in the process. This week, the biggest news in hip-hop was not about a person, but about a building. Brooklyn's Barclays Center, one-half-of-one-percent-owned by Jay-Z opened for business with eight straight concerts by the rap legend.

Another BK rapper, Skyzoo released his superb album A Dream Deferred this week as well. And, in the realm of sadly predictable news, Beanie Sigel got arrested while he was already facing a two-year jail sentence. Best wishes to Beanie. Come home soon. Below, the lines of the week.

5. "It's not music, this medicine and/ I'm not a rapper, I'm a medicine man/ More like a gifted holistic mystic/ But try to kick my habit and get dopesick," -- Prodigy, "Medicine Man" Lyrics

We at RG are of course big Mobb Deep fans, and were saddened when rumors of their split turned out to be true. But if P keeps making music like this, it'll take at least some of the sting away. Just hearing Mr. Shook Ones compare himself to a "holistic mystic" made our whole day.

Mr. Vegas Cheating Scandal: Jamaican Dancehall Star Breaks Down in Video

Jamaican dancehall star Mr. Vegas is embroiled in a cheating scandal involving his common law wife's indiscretions, which took place in the couple's own home. Allegedly, the encounters even occurred in front of their 1-year-old daughter. The dancehall artist is so distraught that he took to social media and posted what some might call ill-advised emotional content.

Fans have had diverse reactions to the singer's tearful admissions, some posting their sympathies while others have advised him to take his pain elsewhere, or warned that he'll regret the posts. His wife, Shellian McBayne, was allegedly found by Vegas having unprotected sex in the couple's own bed.

Very few people were surprised to hear that Rihanna and ex-boyfriend Chris Brown were getting back together, but now her father has made some waves of his own, announcing his approval of the couple's reconcilation.

Ronald Fenty, the singer's sometimes-estranged Barbadian father, who has publicly criticized his daughter in the past, told In Touch magazine that he is excited to see the embattled couple reunited.

"I think everyone makes mistakes and they shouldn't be held to them forever. Everyone should be forgiven once," he said. "There's a lot more to Chris than the whole world knows. I love Chris, man. He's got so much charisma. And he's always had so much respect for me. That's what I love about him. He's always shown me respect."

Bad R&B Covers: 10 Awful, Swag-Free Performances -- Watch

People of all types are drawn to R&B music for its smooth, silken sexiness. The genre offers a variety of cathartic purposes. Songs from crooners and singers are perfect for wallowing in pain, professing love or letting a former flame know just what they lost. Although human beings universally experience these emotions, not all possess the ability to articulate them beautifully through lyrics. However, sometimes the sentiment is so strong that, regardless of talent, a person will do anything to express it.

Take a look at the 10 videos below to witness just that. Entertainers like Prince, John Legend, Lauryn Hill and Aaliyah are immensely talented yet the people who are covering their respective songs don't match up to their greatness. They fail, miserably. Watch these renditions and you'll realize singing these hits is no easy feat.

Jahlil Beats Touts Himself 'Best' Producer, Talks Success, Mentoring

TK

Producer Jahlil Beats believes he's the No. 1 producer in his city of Chester, Penn., at the moment. He's even serving as a mentor to those on the come-up.

"I can definitely say I'm the best right now," he tells The BoomBox on the red carpet at the 2012 BET Hip Hop Awards. "I got my little brother, the Beat Bully, who produced [Rick Ross'] 'So Sophisticated' and [Meek Mill's] 'House Party. He's got a couple joints under his belt too."

Seems like it wasn't too long ago when hip-hop heads were saying the same thing about Jahlil.
