Stella Nina McCartney (born 13 September 1971) is an English fashion designer. She is the daughter of former Beatles member Sir Paul McCartney and the late photographer and animal rights activist, Linda McCartney.

Early life[link]

Stella McCartney was born in Lambeth, London, England on 13 September 1971, the second child of Beatles bassist Paul McCartney and photographer Linda Eastman. She is named after her maternal great-grandmothers (both of Linda McCartney's grandmothers were named Stella). As a young girl, McCartney travelled the globe with her parents and their pop music group Wings, along with her siblings: older half-sister Heather (who was legally adopted by Paul McCartney), older sister Mary, and younger brother James. According to her father, the name of Wings was inspired by Stella's difficult birth. As his daughter was being born by emergency caesarean section, Paul sat outside the operating room and prayed that she be born "on the wings of an angel."^[1] Wings toured from shortly after her birth in 1971 until 1980.

Despite their fame, the McCartneys wanted their children to lead as normal a life as possible, so Stella and her siblings attended local state schools in East Sussex, one of them being Bexhill College. McCartney has said that while attending state school, she was a victim of bullying,^[2] as well as being a bully herself.^[3]

Born and raised in London and the English countryside, Stella McCartney graduated from Central St Martins in 1995. Some say^[who?] that a signature style of sharp tailoring, natural confidence and sexy femininity was apparent in her first collection. In 1997, she was appointed the Creative Director of Chloe in Paris.^{[citation needed]}

Stella McCartney became interested in designing clothes as a youth. At age thirteen, she made her first jacket. Three years later, she interned for Christian Lacroix, working on his first fashion design collection, honing her skills working for Edward Sexton, her father's Savile Row tailor for a number of years.

She studied her foundation at Ravensbourne College of Design and Communication, fashion design at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in the early 1990s. Her graduation collection in 1995 was modelled by friends and supermodels Naomi Campbell, Yasmin Le Bon and Kate Moss – for free – at the graduation runway show. The collection was shown to a song penned by her famous father, called "Stella May Day."^[4] The show made front-page news, and the entire collection was sold to Tokio, a London boutique. The designs were licensed to Browns, Joseph, Bergdorf Goodman and Neiman Marcus. In 1998, she designed her sister Mary's wedding dress for her wedding to television producer Alistair Donald.

A lifelong vegetarian, Stella McCartney does not use any leather or fur in her designs. She supports PETA.^[5] Some of McCartney's designs have text that elaborates on her "no animal" policy; for example, one of her jackets for Adidas says, "suitable for sporty vegetarians" on the sleeve. Stella does use wool, silk, and other animal-derived fabrics in her designs.

In March 1997 McCartney was appointed Creative Director of Paris fashion house Chloé, following in the footsteps of Karl Lagerfeld. Lagerfeld was less than impressed with the house's choice, stating, "Chloé should have taken a big name. They did, but in music, not fashion. Let's hope she's as gifted as her father." Despite initial skepticism, McCartney's designs have enjoyed considerable commercial and critical success. She was accompanied to Chloé by her assistant and friend Phoebe Philo, who later replaced her as design director.^{[citation needed]}

In 2001, Stella McCartney launched her own fashion house under her name in a joint venture with Gucci Group (now the PPR Luxury Group) and showed her first collection in Paris. Stella McCartney now operates 17 freestanding stores in locations including Manhattan’s Soho, London’s Mayfair, LA’s West Hollywood, Paris’ Palais Royal and Milan, and recently opened doors in Rome and Miami. Her collections are now distributed in over 50 countries through 600 wholesale accounts including specialty shops and department stores.

In 2003, Stella McCartney launched her first perfume, Stella.

The following awards have recognized Stella McCartney’s achievement in fashion and social awareness: Stella McCartney received the VH1/Vogue Designer of the Year award in 2000, New York. Paul McCartney presented the award to his daughter. She thanked him in her acceptance speech and dedicated the award to her late mother.^[6] In 2000, McCartney designed Madonna's wedding dress for her marriage to Guy Ritchie as well as the Woman of Courage Award for work against cancer at the prestigious Unforgettable Evening event (2003, Los Angeles), the Glamour Award for Best Designer of the Year (2004, London), the Star Honoree at the Fashion Group International Night of the Stars (2004, New York), the Organic Style Woman of the Year Award (2005, New York), the Elle Style Award for Best Designer of the Year Award (2007, London), Best Designer of The Year at the British Style Awards (2007, London), Best Designer of The Year at the Spanish Elle Awards (2008, Barcelona), the Green Designer of the Year at the ACE Awards (2008, New York) and in 2009 she was honoured by the NRDC, featured in the Time 100 and recognized as a Glamour magazine Woman of the Year. Most recently in November 2011 she was presented with the Red Carpet Award by the British Fashion Council.

In January 2007, McCartney launched a skincare line, CARE. The 100% organic line includes seven products, from a cleansing milk made with lemon balm and apricot to green tea and linden blossom floral water.^[7]

In 2008, a new lingerie line was launched.

In November 2010, the Stella McCartney Kids collection was launched for newborns and children up to age 12.

In 2004, she designed clothes for Madonna's Re-Invention Tour, Annie Lennox's summer tour, and Gwyneth Paltrow's and Jude Law's costumes for the film Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow.^{[citation needed]}

She also launched a joint-venture line with Adidas, establishing a long-term partnership with the corporation in September 2004. This line is a sports performance collection for women.^[8] The critically acclaimed sports performance collection “adidas by Stella McCartney,” has since successfully grown to include several athletic disciplines including running, gym, yoga, tennis, swimming, golf, winter sports and triathlon. In September 2010, Stella McCartney was appointed Team GB’s Creative Director for the 2012 Olympics by adidas – the first time in the history of the games that a leading fashion designer has designed the apparel for a country’s team across all competitions for both the Olympic and the Paralympic Games.

In 2005, she designed a range of clothing and accessories for H&M to boost public awareness of her own brand and to create more affordable options for her fans. The line was released in November of that year and sold out almost immediately on launch day in record time.^{[citation needed]} On 12 March 2007, McCartney's limited edition 42-piece range was released to just 100 Target stores exclusively in Australia. The range was priced from $30 for a silk scarf to $200 for a taffeta trench coat.^{[citation needed]}

In January 2008, McCartney's collaboration with lingerie label Bendon was scheduled to be released to department stores, speciality stores and Stella McCartney stores.^{[citation needed]} McCartney was also scheduled, in early 2008, to release a line of handbags for LeSportsac. The collection has 30–40 styles and priced at $200–500. The collection consists of travel bags, luggage, baby accessories and bags for mothers with infants and toddlers. The line is sold at high end retailers, the Los Angeles and New York Stella McCartney stores, select LeSportsac boutiques, and will be available for purchase online.

Since starting her own label, McCartney has also collaborated on projects with several artists including Gary Hume, R. Crumb, Jeff Koons, David Remfry and Ed Ruscha.^{[citation needed]}

In January 2010, McCartney announced she would be collaborating with Disney to create an Alice in Wonderland-inspired jewelry collection.^[9]

In September 2010, Stella McCartney was appointed Team GB’s Creative Director for the 2012 Olympics by Adidas. The uniforms will be worn by athletes in the British Olympic and Paralympic teams who are competing in the London 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games.^[10] This was the first time that a leading fashion designer has designed the apparel for a country’s team across all competitions for both the Olympic and the Paralympic Games. In March 2012 the Team GB kit was publicly displayed.^[10]

In October 2010, Stella relaunched her Designers for Target range in Australia. Priced at AU$30–249, it proved less popular than its previous iteration.^{[citation needed]} Refunds for the products have been significant.^{[citation needed]}

In July 2011 she participated at the catwalk of The Brandery fashion show in Barcelona.^[11]

In September 2011 Stella McCartney’s costume designs for the New York City Ballet’s Ocean’s Kingdom premiered in New York.

Criticism[link]

McCartney has always claimed that she would have been a famous fashion designer even if her father had not been Paul McCartney. Vogue magazine wrote that "her first collection for the house Chloé, shown in Paris in October 1997, quickly dispelled any doubts about her talent."^[12]

In November 2007, Stella designed a silver necklace featuring a single leg, an apparent attack on her father's estranged wife Heather Mills, an amputee. Fashion insiders thought it was "edgy", but also a bit "out of order".^[13]

Personal life[link]

McCartney married British publisher Alasdhair Willis on 30 August 2003 on the Isle of Bute. McCartney's wedding dress was an updated version of her mother's wedding dress from her March 1969 marriage ceremony to Paul McCartney.^[12] McCartney and Willis have four children: sons Miller Alasdhair James Willis (born 2005)^[14] and Beckett Robert Lee Willis in London (born 2008)^[15] and daughters Bailey Linda Olwyn Willis (born 2006)^[16][17] and Reiley Dilys Stella Willis (born 2010).^[18]

Stella has a much younger half-sister, Beatrice Milly McCartney, born on 28 October 2003 to her father and his second wife, Heather Mills.^[19]

Alexandra Shulman, OBE (born 1958), is the editor of the British edition of Vogue. She is one of the country's most oft-quoted voices on fashion trends. She took the helm of Vogue in 1992, presiding over a circulation increase to 200,000 and a higher profile for the publication. She has also written for The Daily Telegraph and the Daily Mail.

Early life[link]

Alexandra Shulman was born in 1958, the daughter of the late drama critic Milton Shulman and the writer Drusilla Beyfus; her mother returned to work two weeks after giving birth, with Alexandra later noting that "the men she worked for were horrified that she was returning to work at all and had simply assumed she would stop".^[1] She has two siblings, Nicola and Jason. The family lived in Belgravia and Shulman attended St Paul's Girls' School.^[2] Due to both her parents working in the journalism profession, the thought of following their career paths did not appeal to Shulman. Instead, she expressed an interest in becoming a hairdresser,^[3] or working in the music industry, saying: "Nobody believes me when I say it's not what I thought I was going to do. But my heroines were singers like Joni Mitchell, Patti Smith or Carly Simon. I didn't think about whether they wore Chanel or not".^[4]

Shulman studied social anthropology at the University of Sussex.^[3] In 1980 she graduated, receiving a 2:2, later recalling herself being "in tears".^[5] In the following months, she became an assistant at an independent record label, enabling her to move out of her parents' flat.^[5] However, she failed to last long at her job and was sacked. She then took on a role in the artists and repertoire department of Arista Records briefly, before losing her job again.^[4] Having had her foray into a career in the music business fail, she became a secretary at the now-defunct Over 21 magazine.^[4]

She began her fashion journalism career in 1982 at The Tatler, working subsequently for The Sunday Telegraph, Vogue and the British edition of GQ, where she became editor in 1990.

As Shulman took on the role as editor-in-cheif of Vogue in 1992, some speculated that she was not well exerienced enough for the role. Furthermore, others commented that her personal appearance did not conform to previous Vogue editors; as The New York Times noted, "The British press has made much of the fact that when it comes to personal wardrobe, Ms. Schulman [sic] could learn a thing or two from Ms. Tilberis's trademark Chanel, and that she could also become better acquainted with a hairbrush".^[6] It has been noted that it is still remarked upon that she doesn't "look" like an editor of Vogue.^[7]

Her tenure at Vogue has been marked with various iconic issues of the magazine. Her December 1999 "Millenium Issue", possessing a simplistic page layout and a reflective, mirror-like cover — giving the illusion that its reader was on the front cover — became the highest selling issue of Vogue, with circulation of 241,001, including a newsstand sale of 142,399.^[8] The "Gold Issue," a December 2000 edition with Kate Moss on the cover in silhouette, also became a well-known cover. A 1997 cover in memoriam of Diana, Princess of Wales was included in a poll deciding the UK's best ever magazine cover. As The Guardian noted, "Vogue stood out with a simple bare cover using a Patrick Demarchelier photograph of Diana in a red dress".^[9]

As the editor of Vogue, Shulman makes various decisions on the magazine's stance. She has stated that, "we never publish diets. We've never published things on cosmetic surgery",^[7] adding that she does not want to prescribe as specific way a woman should look to the reader. She also refuses to put celebrities on the cover if they demand copy approval and picture approval, saying "I just find that so offensive".^[10]

The magazine drew criticism in the early 1990s for photos of an emaciated Moss that were dubbed heroin chic, part of a larger ongoing debate over whether fashion magazines present an unhealthy image for girls and contribute to the anorexia problem. In 1997, the watchmaker Omega pulled an ad campaign from Vogue over this issue. Shulman dismissed these concerns in a 1998 interview with the PBS public affairs television programme Frontline, stating: "Not many people have actually said to me that they have looked at my magazine and decided to become anorexic."^[11]

She has become more sensitive to the issue in recent years, acknowledging that anorexia is a "huge problem" in a January 2005 interview with The Scotsman: "I really wish that models were a bit bigger because then I wouldn't have to deal with this the whole time. There is pressure on them to stay thin, and I'm always talking to the designers about it, asking why they can't just be a bit closer to a real woman's physique in terms of their ideal, but they're not going to do it. Clothes look better to all of our eyes on people who are thinner."^[12] In 2009 Shulman spoke out over the sample sizes leading designers were producing - some were so small they restricted Vogue using the models they wished in the magazine, resulting in some models being airbrushed to look bigger. Shulman wrote to designers to draw their attention to the situation calling for larger sized samples to be produced.^[13]

Contrary to expectations, Shulman describes her own life as work-dominated and not particularly glamorous. In an October 2004 newspaper column on her Telegraph portrait, she said:

"Leaving aside the obvious but unlikely criteria of beautiful and thin, I realised that there was no look that was achievable which was going to make me happy. In my mind I am a free spirit of about 25 wafting around in second-hand cocktail dresses; in reality I am a 47-year-old businesswoman and journalist. The pictures unfortunately, tell the whole story."^[14]

She was a regular columnist for The Daily Telegraph newspaper, but started writing a column for the Daily Mail in 2006, which ran until 2009, when she was replaced by Liz Jones.^[15] Shulman's first novel, Can We Still Be Friends, was published by Fig Tree in 2012.^[16]

Personal life[link]

She has a son, Samuel Robert (born 6 April 1995), by the writer Paul Spike, whom she married on 26 May 1994 and from whom she is divorced. She lives in the Queen's Park area of London.

Shulman received an OBE in 2004, which Janet Street-Porter wrote in The Independent was "proof that the honours system is an embarrassment".^[17] She also was named "Editors' Editor of the Year" by the British Society of Magazine Editors and is a trustee of the National Portrait Gallery.

Shulman's hobbies include music, tennis and reading fiction. Her favourite author is Rosamond Lehmann and she's an avid fan of the Inspector Wallander novels by Henning Mankell. She critiqued the Wikipedia entry on haute couture for The Guardian in October 2005, rating it a 0 out of 10.^[18] She plays the guitar and owns a Nissan Figaro and a Toyota Corolla Verso.
