Perched on top of the Cotswold escarpment with spectacular views over the Severn Valley, Nympsfield Long Barrow was a burial place for early farming communities. Prehistorian Timothy Darvill invites us imagine how the long barrow would have looked when it was in use over 5,500 years ago, and speculates on the symbolic meaning of the shape of the burial mound.

The West Kennet Long Barrow Explored
Marq English and I are in Wiltshire on our way to Avebury exploring some of the prehistoric sites. Today we are visiting the West Kennet Long Barrow. It is a Neolithic tomb or barrow, situated on a prominent chalk ridge, near Silbury Hill, one-and-a-half miles south of Avebury. The site was recorded by John Aubrey in the 17th century and by William Stukeley in the 18th century.
The construction of the West Kennet Long Barrow commenced about 3600 BC, which is some 400 years before the first stage of Stonehenge, and it was in use until around 2500 BC.

THE LONG BARROWS: 1,000 Years Before Stonehenge | A Prehistory Guys Film
If it were not for the long barrows, we would have very little idea what was going on in early Neolithic Britain, not long after the first farmers arrived.
Although, for us, they occupy the same landscape, up to a thousand years separates the construction of these great tombs from the later megalithic edifices such as the stone circles and indeed Stonehenge itself.
The long barrows are at once a mystery and also the biggest insight we have into the lives and culture of the early settlers and their descendants not long after the farming revolution took hold in Britain & Ireland.
Rupert Soskin presents a portrait of the Severn/Cotswold Long Barrows, telling the story of how they have been gradually giving up their secrets to archaeology over the past two hundred years.

Set within the rolling Cotswolds countryside, Windmill Tump, or Rodmarton Long Barrow as it is sometimes known, was built over 5,500 years ago by early farming communities. It was used as a burial place for their dead, and could also have served to mark their territory. Expert Timothy Darvill tells us how the long barrow would have been accessed and where ceremonies and burial rites might have taken place.
