Humans to Near Earth Asteroids - Paul Abell (SETI Talks)
SETI Talks archive: seti.org Recently the current US presidential administration directed NASA to include near-Earth asteroids (NEAs) as destinations for future human exploration with the goal of sending astronauts to a NEA in the mid to late 2020s. These missions would be the first human expeditions to interplanetary bodies beyond the Earth-Moon system and would prove useful for testing technologies required for human missions to Mars, Phobos and Deimos, and other Solar System destinations. Missions to NEAs would undoubtedly provide a great deal of technical and engineering data on spacecraft operations for future human space exploration while conducting detailed scientific investigations of these primitive objects. Dr. Abell will show how current analyses of operational concepts suggest that stay times of 15 to 30 days may be possible at these destinations. In addition, the resulting scientific investigations would refine designs for future extraterrestrial In Situ Resource Utilization (ISRU), and assist in the development of hazard mitigation techniques for planetary defense.

UFO - Alien Contact - SETI Documentary
UFO - The SETI Centre. The documentary shows what would happen if an alien message would be heard. SETI is an acronym: Search for Extra Terrestrial Intelligence. This institute, proposed by Frank Drake in 1960 -still one of its directors- was born officially in 1974. Scientific, private and non-profit organization is headquartered in Mountain View, California.

Origins of Chondrites and Chondrules - Derek Sears (SETI Talks)
SETI Talks archive: seti.org It is clear that the chondritic meteorites - those having essentially solar composition - carry unique information about the origin and early history of the solar system and the materials from which the planets formed. Yet it is a highly complex record that centuries of work and highly sophisticated modern techniques have not been able to decipher. Even the most fundamental issues, the origin of the chondrite classes and the origin of the chondrules that distinguish the meteorites from other materials, are still disputed. Dr. Sears will argue that recent data from spacecraft on the nature of asteroid surfaces, advances in determining the chronology meteorites and their components, experiments flown on NASA's microgravity facility (the vomit comet), and the lunar samples returned from the Fra Mauro region of the Moon, make it clear that chondrules are impact melt spherules and the classes are caused by metal-silicate fractionation on asteroidal surfaces. In other words, the chondritic meteorites owe their major properties to asteroidal processes and that we must see through these to understand the information they carry about the early solar system and beyond.

August 2012 Full shows @ www.youtube.com 200 classic shows www.youtube.com jetstreamnews.com Date: 01-24-12 Host: George Noory Guests: Seth Shostak Astronomer Seth Shostak discussed his continued work in the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI), the nature of possible alien life forms, and various astronomy topics. The Allen Telescope Array, which lost funding last year, is now back up and running through private donations, and is once again listening for signals, he reported. SETI's method is to connect radio telescopes to computers which scan for intelligent or artificial signals. If anything unusual comes up, other scientists are contacted to see if they can reproduce the effect, he outlined. Interestingly, in the 1920s, Mars was a little closer to Earth than it normally is, and it was suggested that all radio transmitters be turned off, so that people could listen for Martian signals. This was during the era when it was believed that canals existed on Mars, as declared by astronomer Percival Lowell, but he was actually seeing an optical illusion when he made that observation, Shostak explained. Beyond the Allen Array, other projects in the works include LOFAR, a low frequency antenna array being built in Holland and Germany, that will allow for studying the sky in low frequency ranges, and the Square Kilometer Array, a European initiative that will cover a large distance. Shostak will be involved in the upcoming conference Seticon, this June 22-24th, and ...

Large Hadron Collider - Michael Peskin (SETI Talks)
It's finally here! Thanks for your patience! SETI Talks Archive: seti.org The Large Hadron Collider at CERN in Geneva, Switzerland, has begun its study of physics at distances 10000 times smaller than an atomic nucleus. This accelerator and its experiments are enormous in many respects---in the physical size of the facilites, in the sizes of the experimental teams, but also in the stakes for our understanding of elementary particles, mass, and the universe. In this colloquium, Dr. Peskin will describe the physics questions that motivate the LHC experiments, the detectors that are designed to meet these goals, and the challenges that the experiments must overcome. Dr. Peskin will show some of the first results from the LHC, including the status of the search for the much-anticipated Higgs boson.

Planets around Double Stars - Gaspard Duchene (SETI Talks)
SETI Talks Archive: seti.org While the prevalence of stellar multiplicity has been known for many decades, it is now becoming increasingly clear that planetary systems are also frequent around Main Sequence stars. This raises the natural question of the connection between stellar multiplicity and planet formation, a topic that was mostly ignored until the last few years. Does the presence of a stellar companion alter, prevent or promote the formation of planets? In which way? Characterizing observational trends as a function of the stellar companion's mass and orbital properties can help identify the most important physical effects induced by the companion, if any. In this talk, I will review some key results from a number of recent surveys based on the Spitzer, Kepler and Herschel space observatories, as well as ground-based facilities. Building on these surveys, I will draw a global picture of our current understanding of the subject and will propose that, while planetary systems exist in a very diverse range of multiple stellar systems, they may not all form through the same process.

Machine Learning and Data Streams - David Thompson (SETI Talks)
SETI Talks archive://seti.org/talks Next-generation science instruments such as the SKA, LSST, and terrestrial sensor networks will dramatically increase the volume of collected data. This enables detection of very rare transient anomalies, but also creates new challenges since comprehensive storage is impossible and analysis must occur in real time. Dr. Thompson will discuss machine learning approaches for online anomaly detection in data streams. Pattern recognition triages the incoming data for comprehensive analysis of candidate events, retaining robustness against changing noise conditions and interferences. Examples from radio astronomy (the Very Long Baseline Array Fast Transients Experiment) demonstrate the practical benefits of an adaptive approach.

UFO Wow Signal Full Recording SETI
Wow Signal As described by wiki: The Wow! signal was a strong narrowband radio signal detected by Jerry R. Ehman on August 15, 1977, while working on a SETI project at the Big Ear radio telescope of The Ohio State University then located at Ohio Wesleyan University's Perkins Observatory, Delaware, Ohio.[1] The signal bore expected hallmarks of potential non-terrestrial and non-Solar System origin. It lasted for the full 72-second duration that Big Ear observed it, but has not been detected again. The signal has been the subject of significant media attention. Amazed at how closely the signal matched the expected signature of an interstellar signal in the antenna used, Ehman circled the signal on the computer printout and wrote the comment "Wow!" on its side. This comment became the name of the signal.[1] Thanks for your help and happy UFO hunting! Massive Flood On Seti River In Pokhara
An avalanche in Annapurna Mountain Range triggers massive flood in Seti River in Pokhara on Saturday Morning (5th May 2012). The Seti River viciously came to life in Pokhara with full force that swept nearby settlements, villages and even vehicles. Two picnic bus carrying students have also been swept away. The disaster also swept away four trucks at Bhujrung Khola of Kaski. So far at least 14 people are said to have perished in the flood with over 50 missing. Settlements on river banks have been evacuated by the Nepal Police and Nepal Army foreseeing the possible threat. The flood that has taken everyone by surprise is believed to have been caused by an avalanche upstream, deep in the Annapurna mountains. God bless Pokhara.!!
