Kanan Devi was born as Kanan Dassi in Howrah, West Bengal in or around 1916. In her autobiography, Kanan Devi has observed that she was born illegitimately. She belonged to a poor family and after the death of her adoptive father, she and her mother were left to earn and live on their own and had to do all sorts of work to drag on their lives. Her name was soon changed to Kanan Bala. When she was only ten, a well wisher introduced her to Jyoti Studios where she was cast in a small role in Joydev (1926). She later worked with Radha Films, in films mainly by Jyotish Banerjee. Kanan Devi (1916 - July 17, 1992) was among the early singing stars of Indian cinema, and is credited popularly as the first star of Bengali Cinema.[1] Her singing style, usually in rapid tempo, was used instrumentally in some of the biggest hits of New Theatres, Calcutta.

This film, produced by architectural historian Esther McCoy, documents the Walter Luther Dodge house in West Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, and the life of its architect, Irving John Gill. The film was made to advocate for its preservation during a 7-year battle to save it fropm the wrecking ball. The campaign failed, and the house was destroyed in 1970. This film, created to help save the house, now serves as the building's best surviving visual record. Ben Weber, born in 1916 in St. Louis, was largely self-taught as a composer. He was one of the first Americans to embrace the 12-tone techniques of Schoenberg, starting in 1938. After moving to New York in 1945, he maintained a strikingly diverse circle of friends, Milton Babbitt, John Cage, Leonard Bernstein and the poet Frank O'Hara among them. A voluble, roly-poly man talker, and excellent cook, Weber became more reclusive as he got older. He died alone at 63. Weber's personality is reflected in his music, by turns witty and melancholic, rigorous and free-wheeling. Two works for cello and piano, played compellingly by the cellist Joel Krosnick and the pianist Gilbert Kalish, are typical. Five Pieces for cello and piano (1941) was inspired by Webern's radically concise 12-tone works. But Weber could not stifle his bent for expansive lyricism and bold gestures. In Three Capriccios for cello and piano (1977), one gets the sense that his adaptation of the 12-tone technique was his way of ensuring that his music would keep its cutting edge and not slip into Romanticism. There is a rather Brahmsian spirit trying to emerge here. In the ''Concert Aria After Solomon,'' performed by the soprano Lauren Skuce with an ensemble including members of the New York Woodwind Quintet, Weber gave free rein to his rhapsodic side, with engaging results. This is a 1916 Charlie Chaplin cartoon that was fourth in a series of nine chaplin cartoons made by the american Movca Film Service. I had, until recently, only seen brief glimpses of this cartoon from various documentaries on the life and work of Charlie Chaplin; I came across this quite by accident on a european DVD release of some Chaplin Mutual films. I'm afraid I don't know very much about this series of cartoons. I don't imagine Chaplin himself would have had much to do with them, or if he was even aware of their existance. Then again, there may have been some copyright infringment in the Movca Film Service making use of the Tramp character---then again, copyright laws probably weren't as highly enforced in 1916 as they are now. As for the animation... well, it certainly isn't Fantasia. But it does seem relatively successful in producing some of the Tramp's more popular poses (if not the flow of movement). But considering the year, and the fact that this probably wasn't a very established company with a lot of experience, I'd say it's not bad. However, in any case, I think a live-action Chaplin film would do just as well, and in most cases, better. But there's a certain amount of nostalgia in seeing an old cartoon like this. It just goes to show how universally known and acclaimed he was with only being in film for two years.

A film depicting the Somme battle cut and edited by myself compiled from film from the Imperial War Museum archives. The infantry at the beginning are soldiers of the 1st Battalion, The Lancashire Fusiliers. Having fixed bayonets they move into position prior to the attack on Beaumont-Hamel 1 July. The men resting in the lane are two companies and a Stokes Mortar team from 1st Battalion, the Lancashire Fusiliers forming up for the assault in a sunken lane opposite Hawthorn Ridge. Twenty minutes after this film was shot they attacked under heavy machine gun fire and only 50 of them reached the low bank beyond the lane. Thanks. Please leave comments

The Fireman was the second film Charlie Chaplin created for Mutual Films in 1916. Released in June 1916, it starred Charlie as the fireman and Edna Purviance as the daughter to Leo White. Leo White played a character trying to arrange with Eric Campbell (the fire chief) to have his house burn down so he could collection the insurance money. George Edward Wade (20 September 1869 -- 29 November 1954), better known by his stage name, George Robey, was an English music hall comedian and star. He was marketed as the "Prime Minister of Mirth". Robey was born into a middle class family -- his father George was a civil engineer. His father's foreign assignments lead to his first studies at the University of Leipzig, then Cambridge University. He did not graduate, but joined a firm associated with the Birmingham tramway, as a clerk. He earned small fees from performing music and song at local venues, adopting the stage name "Robey" from a firm of builders, finally changing it by deed-poll. Robey's London début was made at the Royal Aquarium, as assistant to Professor Kennedy, a burlesque mesmerist, in 1891. In this act he sang songs, pretending to be under hypnosis. He was soon performing in his own act, and was booked at the Oxford Music Hall in June 1891, aged 21. Like many of his time, Robey's act consisted of patter and song, with elaborate stage costumes, often appearing in drag. Hansraj travelled to Bombay in 1944 to pursue a career as a music director in Hindi film industry, though he managed to made his debut as a composer with Pujari, (1946), directed by Ardeshir Irani.[2] Noted playback singer, Asha Bhosle made her Hindi film debut when she sang the song Saawan aaya for Hansraj Behl's film Chunariya (1948). In 1964 he gave music for hit Punjabi film by Padam Prakash Maheshwary titled "Satluj de Kande", starring Balraj Sahni, Nishi, Wasti, and Mirza Musharraf. The patriotic hit, Jahan Daal Daal Pe Sone Ki Chidiya Karti Hai Basera..'sung by Mohammed Rafi in the film Sikandar-e-Aazam (1965), starring Prithviraj Kapoor was one of his last memorable number. Hansraj Behl is one of the music directors who became successful in the post independence era. He provided music for not only Hindi films but also for Punjabi films. Her parents were both successful stage actors, especially her father, Richard Bennett, and often toured the country for weeks at a time. In fact, Joan came from a long line of actors, dating back to the 18th century. Often, when her parents were on tour, Joan and her two older sisters, Constance Bennett, who later became an actress, and Barbara were left in the care of close friends. At the age of four, Joan made her first stage appearance. She debuted in films a year later in The Valley of Decision (1916), in which her father was the star and the entire Bennett clan participated. Born Alice Frances Taaffe in Vincennes, Indiana, she made her film debut in 1916 in Not My Sister, One of her most acclaimed performances came as "Marguerite" in 1921's The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, starring Rudolph Valentino. Terry was married to Director Rex Ingram. And was a good friend of Ramon Novarro. Terry died on December 22, 1987 of natural causes, and was interred in the Valhalla Memorial Park Cemetery in North Hollywood, Los Angeles, California. For her contribution to the motion picture industry, Alice Terry has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 6628 Hollywood Blvd.
