An 1854 graduate of the U.S. Military Academy, West Point, N.Y., Stuart resigned his commission to share in the defense of his state when Virginia seceded from the Union (April 1861). At the First Battle of Bull Run (called First Manassas by the South) that July, he distinguished himself by his personal bravery. Later in the year he was promoted to brigadier general and placed in command of the cavalry brigade of the Army of Northern Virginia. Just before the Seven Days’ Battle—fought in June 1862 in defense of Richmond—Stuart was sent out by Confederate general Robert E. Lee to locate the right flank of the Federal army under General George B. McClellan. He not only successfully achieved his mission, but he also rode completely around McClellan’s army to deliver his report to Lee. In the next campaign he had the good fortune, in his raid against Federal communications, to bring back a staff document from which Lee was able to discover the strength and position of Federal forces.
Stuart, promoted to a major general and commander of the cavalry corps, was present at the Second Battle of Bull Run (Second Manassas, August 1862) and again circled the Federal army, returning with 1,200 enemy horses. During the Maryland campaign that followed, he brilliantly defended one of the passes of South Mountain (Crampton’s Gap), thus enabling Lee to concentrate his army in time to meet McClellan’s attack. By the winter of 1862 Stuart’s extraordinary skill as an intelligence officer was fully recognized, and Lee called him the “eyes of the army.â€
At the Battle of Fredericksburg (December 1862) Stuart’s horse artillery rendered valuable service by checking the Federal attack on General T.J. (“Stonewallâ€) Jackson’s corps. The following May at the Battle of Chancellorsville, Stuart was appointed by Lee to take command of the 2nd Army Corps after Jackson had been wounded.
The next campaign at Gettysburg, Pa. (July 1863), was preceded by the cavalry Battle of Brandy Station (June 9), at which for the first time Stuart and his men were met by worthy opposition from the Federal cavalry. The Confederates’ northward march to the Potomac River was screened by Stuart’s cavalry corps, which held the various approaches on the right flank of the army. Stuart’s conduct at Gettysburg was long a subject of controversy. Though ordered by Lee to deploy his cavalry as a screen while also gathering intelligence for the advancing Confederate army, Stuart instead struck off on a raid, was delayed, and arrived at Gettysburg too late to provide Lee with vital information on the positions and movements of the Union forces. When Stuart did rejoin Lee’s army at Gettysburg on July 2, the battle had already begun, and his exhausted forces were of little help.

A video to give you a feel for how the US Army defended against Soviet aggression along the Iron Curtain. This video features the famed 2nd Armored Cavalry Regiment (2ACR) which was responsible for patrolling the entire West German/ Czechoslovakian border and the southern half of the East German / West German border. The video was made in the 1970s. I was with the regiment in the 1980s (the regiment was headquartered in Nuremberg). Although the equipment changed, the mission remained the same as portrayed here. This was the regiment at the forefront of the war against the native Americans of the western plains, notably the Lakota Sioux. Led by General Custer, it met disaster at the Little Bighorn in 1876 – a brief reprieve in indigenous dispossession. Fourteen years later, the 7th massacred civilians at the ‘battle’ of Wounded Knee, the last chapter in America’s frontier wars.
In the 20th century it did more than its share of tough fighting in the Pacific, Korea and Vietnam. But this record was marred, notably, by implication in the massacre of civilians at No Gun Ri in Korea.
Old Snuffy Gray’s tale is complex: much of his sense of guilt relates to the betrayal of the Hmong tribal allies he helped recruit in Indochina. But as this film traces his twilight journey across America, his ambivalence about his unit’s deeper history – the carnage of the 19th century American west – becomes apparent.
He talks to current-day 7th veterans who happen to be native Americans, and their feelings are even more mixed. Yet, strange as it may seem to an outsider, there is ultimately reconciliation here. Snuffy and his native American comrades find peace with their history.
This becomes clear when they join an annual Lakota ceremony to commemorate the defeat of Custer and his men. The most revered symbol in this ritual is today’s Stars and Stripes.
In America, units like the 7th cavalry fought in the vicious campaigns of European settlement, and have existed continuously since. In some strange way, this may have helped native Americans maintain a pride in their warrior culture, a pride all Americans these days want a piece of.
After all, the modern US military celebrates the very traditions its forebears destroyed: thus Apache helicopters, Tomahawk missiles.

The division next saw combat during the Vietnam War. No longer a conventional infantry unit, the division had become an air assault division as the 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile), commonly referred to as the 1st Air Cavalry Division, using helicopters as troop carriers. In 1965 colors and subordinate unit designations of the 1st Cavalry Division were transferred from Korea to Ft. Benning, Georgia, where they were used to reflag the existing the 2nd Infantry Division and the 11th Air Assault Division (Test), which were merged into single unit with the designation of 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile). Concurrently, the colors and subordinate unit designations of the 2nd Infantry Division were transferred to Korea to reflag what had been the 1st Cavalry Division. Shortly thereafter, the 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile) began deploying to Camp Radcliffe, An Khe, Vietnam. The division, along with the 101st Airborne Division, perfected new tactics and doctrine for helicopter-borne assaults over the next five years in Vietnam. All aircraft carried insignia to indicate their battalion and company.
The Division was equipped with the M16 rifle, the UH-1 troop carrier helicopter, the AH-1 attack helicopter, and the CH-47 Chinook cargo helicopter.
The unit's first major operation was the Pleiku Campaign. During this action, the division conducted 35 days of continuous airmobile operations. The opening battle, the Battle of Ia Drang Valley, was described in the book We Were Soldiers Once...And Young which was also the basis of the subsequent Mel Gibson film We Were Soldiers. The unit also earned the first Presidential Unit Citation (US) presented to a division during the Vietnam War.
Most of 1967 was spent in Operation Pershing. This was a large scale search of areas in II Corps which saw 5,400 enemy killed and 2,000 captured. The division re-deployed to Camp Evans, north of Hue in the I Corps Tactical Zone, during the 1968 Tet Offensive, involved in recapturing Quang Tri and Hue. After intense fighting in Hue, the division then moved to relieve Marine Corps units besieged at the Khe Sanh combat base (Operation Pegasus) in March 1968. The 1st Cavalry Division next conducted major clearing operations in the A Shau Valley from mid-April through mid-May 1968. From May until September 1968 the division participated in local pacification and "MedCap" (Medical outreach programs to offer medical support to the Vietnamese local population) missions I Corps.
In the autumn of 1968, the 1st Cavalry Division relocated south to the III Corps Tactical Zone northwest of Saigon, adjacent to a Cambodian region commonly referred to as the "Parrots Beak" due to its shape. In May 1970, the division was among U.S. units participating in the Cambodian Incursion, withdrawing from Cambodia on 29 June. The division thereafter took a defensive posture while the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Vietnam continued. The bulk of the division was withdrawn on 29 April 1971, but its 3rd Brigade was one of the final two major U.S. ground combat units in Vietnam, departing 29 June 1972. Its 1st Battalion, 7th Cavalry, as the main unit of Task Force Garryowen, remained another two months.

A video to give you a feel for how the US Army defended against Soviet aggression along the Iron Curtain. This video features the famed 2nd Armored Cavalry Regiment (2ACR) which was responsible for patrolling the entire West German/ Czechoslovakian border and the southern half of the East German / West German border. The video was made in the 1970s. I was with the regiment in the 1980s (the regiment was headquartered in Nuremberg). Although the equipment changed, the mission remained the same as portrayed here. Toujours Pret! Always Ready!

The division next saw combat during the Vietnam War. No longer a conventional infantry unit, the division had become an air assault division as the 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile), commonly referred to as the 1st Air Cavalry Division, using helicopters as troop carriers. In 1965 colors and subordinate unit designations of the 1st Cavalry Division were transferred from Korea to Ft. Benning, Georgia, where they were used to reflag the existing the 2nd Infantry Division and the 11th Air Assault Division (Test), which were merged into single unit with the designation of 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile). Concurrently, the colors and subordinate unit designations of the 2nd Infantry Division were transferred to Korea to reflag what had been the 1st Cavalry Division. Shortly thereafter, the 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile) began deploying to Camp Radcliffe, An Khe, Vietnam. The division, along with the 101st Airborne Division, perfected new tactics and doctrine for helicopter-borne assaults over the next five years in Vietnam. All aircraft carried insignia to indicate their battalion and company.
The Division was equipped with the M16 rifle, the UH-1 troop carrier helicopter, the AH-1 attack helicopter, and the CH-47 Chinook cargo helicopter.
The unit's first major operation was the Pleiku Campaign. During this action, the division conducted 35 days of continuous airmobile operations. The opening battle, the Battle of Ia Drang Valley, was described in the book We Were Soldiers Once...And Young which was also the basis of the subsequent Mel Gibson film We Were Soldiers. The unit also earned the first Presidential Unit Citation (US) presented to a division during the Vietnam War.
Most of 1967 was spent in Operation Pershing. This was a large scale search of areas in II Corps which saw 5,400 enemy killed and 2,000 captured. The division re-deployed to Camp Evans, north of Hue in the I Corps Tactical Zone, during the 1968 Tet Offensive, involved in recapturing Quang Tri and Hue. After intense fighting in Hue, the division then moved to relieve Marine Corps units besieged at the Khe Sanh combat base (Operation Pegasus) in March 1968. The 1st Cavalry Division next conducted major clearing operations in the A Shau Valley from mid-April through mid-May 1968. From May until September 1968 the division participated in local pacification and "MedCap" (Medical outreach programs to offer medical support to the Vietnamese local population) missions I Corps.
In the autumn of 1968, the 1st Cavalry Division relocated south to the III Corps Tactical Zone northwest of Saigon, adjacent to a Cambodian region commonly referred to as the "Parrots Beak" due to its shape. In May 1970, the division was among U.S. units participating in the Cambodian Incursion, withdrawing from Cambodia on 29 June. The division thereafter took a defensive posture while the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Vietnam continued. The bulk of the division was withdrawn on 29 April 1971, but its 3rd Brigade was one of the final two major U.S. ground combat units in Vietnam, departing 29 June 1972. Its 1st Battalion, 7th Cavalry, as the main unit of Task Force Garryowen, remained another two months.
