Stunning last over hands Black Caps victory
Stunning last over hands Black Caps victory
Requiring 20 runs off the last over to win, Nathan McCullum smashed his way to victory. Some Nathan McCullum heroics with the bat have delivered the Black Caps a sensational one-day victory over Sri Lanka at Hambantota today. Set the stiff task of scoring 198 off 23 overs by the Duckworth-Lewis method after lightning and rain interrupted this second ODI, New Zealand needed 20 runs off the last over. McCullum did it in style, smashing 22 runs off the last four balls - 6, 4, 6, 6 - from left arm spinner Rangana Herath. That saw New Zealand finish on 203-6 for a four wicket win. Sri Lanka had earlier scored 138-1 off their 23 overs. Kyle Mills claimed the only wicket for New Zealand as Kumar Sangakkara (71) and Tillakaratne Dilshan (55), shared an unbeaten partnership of 126. The five and a half hour weather break claimed 54 overs of the match and there were safety concerns as monsoon conditions hit. But it cleared in time to keep the game alive, though a Black Caps victory looked unlikely as the calculators came out. New Zealand required 8.6 an over with the match suddenly taking on T20 proportions. New Zealand needed quick runs from the start and opener Tom Latham delivered those, smashing 86 off 68 balls with 12 fours and a six for a man-of-the-match performance. It was Latham's highest ODI score and it couldn't have been better timed as he kept a cool head in a white-hot scenario. Wickets fell steadily at the other end until wicketkeeper Luke Ronchi arrived to give late hope, thumping 49 from 26 balls. When both Latham and Ronchi were dismissed in the 21st over the cause looked lost for the Black Caps. But up stepped McCullum with his brilliant nine-ball cameo of 32 with three sixes and three fours. Black Caps captain Kyle Mills emerged from "a pretty happy changing room'' to hail his young teammates. He said "an innings of such maturity from a young man, Tom Latham, set it up for us''. "And other guys stood up with the bat, none more so than Nathan McCullum,'' Mills said. Latham said the Black Caps never gave up hope even when reeling at 60 for four after 10 overs. He said they knew they had "guys down the order who could clear the ropes if they want''. Mills felt the Black Caps' seam attack asked more questions of the Sri Lankans than they had in the Bangladesh series but he said they were still "leaking a few too many four-balls'' with spells of good bowling mixed with periods when "we let the pressure off a bit with a boundary''. But he said the team had never lost their self-belief despite the 3-0 series whitewash in Bangladesh. New Zealand take a 1-nil lead in the series after the first match was washed out last Sunday. The third match is played on Saturday. It was a timely return to form in the ODI arena after the disaster in Bangladesh earlier on this tour. Although there was joy in the Black Caps camp it will be tempered by another disappointing bowling effort. In Sunday's washed out opening match, Sri Lanka managed to get to 288-9 with Dilshan (81) and Sangakkara (79) equally dominant then. And there will be concerns around the top order as well. As good as Latham played, Anton Devcich (1), Rob Nicol (0), Grant Elliott (7) and Colin Munro (15) failed to deliver. Devcich was dismissed without scoring last Sunday, putting the spotlight on his place at the top of the order as the Black caps look to take a rare series win this weekend.
