You can’t talk about cycling’s greatest hardmen without talking about Sean Kelly. The Irishman was the rare all-rounder who could sprint, climb and time trial, but what really propelled him to an astonishing 193 wins during an 18-year pro career was an unrelenting, unbreakable tenacity and grit.
Kelly rode Mavic wheels and gear for most of his career, and to this day his personal mechanic is part of Mavic’s famed Service Course. He relished the hardest races and could endure the harshest conditions better than anyone. He dominated the Paris-Nice stage race throughout the ’80s with seven wins and also piled up victories at grueling classics like Paris-Roubaix, Liège-Bastogne-Liège and Milan-San Remo.

Ireland's Greatest ever sportsman?
John James 'Sean' Kelly (born 24 May 1956[1]) is an Irish former professional road bicycle racer. He was one of the most successful road cyclists of the 1980s, and one of the finest classics riders of all time. From turning professional in 1977 until his retirement in 1994, he won nine monument classics, and 193 professional races in total. He won Paris--Nice seven years in a row and the first UCI Road World Cup in 1989. He won the 1988 Vuelta a España and had multiple wins in the Giro di Lombardia, Milan -- San Remo, Paris--Roubaix and Liège--Bastogne--Liège. Other victories include the Critérium International, Grand Prix des Nations and smaller tours including the Tour de Suisse, Vuelta al País Vasco and Volta a Catalunya.
Although Kelly never won the World Road Race Championships, he twice won bronze medals (1982 & 1989) & also finished 5th in 1987, the year compatriot Stephen Roche won gold. Kelly was first to be ranked No.1 when the FICP rankings were introduced in March 1984, a position he held for a record six years. In the 1984 season, Kelly achieved 33 victories.

As we all know, great nutrition is essential for cyclists. The way that pro cyclists approach nutrition has also changed hugely over the years.
Hannah Grant is one of cycling's top chefs, and Sean Kelly is one of the greatest cobbled classics riders of all time. As we were filming at Paris-Roubaix, Hannah made steak pavé with sweet potatoes, sauteed spinach and garlic, and pomegranate to finish.
BORA 10|10 Recipe: Hannah Grant's Steak and sweet potato pavé
400g beef rump/tender loin (lean beef)
500g sweet potato
500g carrots
200g fresh spinach
2 cloves garlic
Olive oil
Splash of white wine
Handful of roasted pine nuts
Fresh herbs and lemon
Pomegranate seeds
Salt and pepper
10 mins. preparation | 10 mins. cooking
Cut beef into steaks and season with salt and pepper. Sear off at high heat on both sides. Turn down the heat and cook 2-3 mins. on each side at medium heat until red
juices comes to the surface. Let the steak rest for 5 mins. before cutting it into “pavés”.
Heat up a pan with olive oil and sauté the garlic for a minute. Add white wine, reduce for 30 seconds, then add spinach and watercress. Season with salt and pepper and add roasted pine nuts.
Finish with pomegranate seeds, fresh herbs and lemon zest to your liking.

Seán Kelly (Irish politician)
Seán Kelly (born 26 April 1952) is an Irish politician and Member of the European Parliament (MEP) for the South constituency. He is a member of Fine Gael, part of the European People's Party.
He served as the 34th President of the Gaelic Athletic Association (2003–06). He was the first Kerry man to hold that office being elected at the first attempt by a record margin at the GAA Congress in 2002. In July 2006 he took up the position of Executive Chairman of the Irish Institute of Sport, a body that was set up in Ireland to support elite athletes and players, and served as Executive President until he announced his resignation in July 2008.
Early and personal life
Kelly was born in Knockataggle, Kilcummin, Killarney, County Kerry in 1952. He was born into a family that was deeply involved in the Gaelic Athletic Association. His grandfather had been chairman of the local club and his four uncles had distinguished playing careers, with his uncle, also Seán Kelly, starring at full-forward for Kerry in their All-Ireland Championship success over Armagh in 1953. He is a first cousin to Fionnuala O'Kelly, wife of the current Taoiseach Enda Kenny.

Sean Kelly (Irish republican)
Sean Kelly, (born c. 1972) is a former volunteer in the Belfast Brigade of the Provisional Irish Republican Army (IRA), who was a member of the active service unit which carried out the Shankill Road bombing in 1993.
Shankill Road bomb
Kelly was convicted for his part in planting a bomb on the Shankill Road, North Belfast, Northern Ireland, intending to kill Johnny Adair and senior members of the Ulster Defence Association (UDA). The bomb exploded prematurely, killing nine Protestant civilians. An 11-second fuse was meant to detonate the bomb after they had shouted a warning. Thomas Begley, a fellow volunteer in the Belfast Brigade, was killed in the botched attack, which left Kelly injured; he lost an eye and has limited use of his left arm.
Kelly was arrested after being picked up by rescuers searching for survivors in the wreckage. Kelly, from the republican toome in southwest antrim ], was sentenced to nine terms of life imprisonment at his trial in January 1995.

You can’t talk about cycling’s greatest hardmen without talking about Sean Kelly. The Irishman was the rare all-rounder who could sprint, climb and time trial, but what really propelled him to an astonishing 193 wins during an 18-year pro career was an unrelenting, unbreakable tenacity and grit.
Kelly rode Mavic wheels and gear for most of his career, and to this day his personal mechanic is part of Mavic’s famed Service Course. He relished the hardest races and could endure the harshest conditions better than anyone. He dominated the Paris-Nice stage race throughout the ’80s with seven wins and also piled up victories at grueling classics like Paris-Roubaix, Liège-Bastogne-Liège and Milan-San Remo.

John James 'Sean' Kelly (born 24 May 1956[1]) is an Irish former professional road bicycle racer. He was one of the most successful road cyclists of the 1980s, and one of the finest classics riders of all time. From turning professional in 1977 until his retirement in 1994, he won nine monument classics, and 193 professional races in total. He won Paris--Nice seven years in a row and the first UCI Road World Cup in 1989. He won the 1988 Vuelta a España and had multiple wins in the Giro di Lombardia, Milan -- San Remo, Paris--Roubaix and Liège--Bastogne--Liège. Other victories include the Critérium International, Grand Prix des Nations and smaller tours including the Tour de Suisse, Vuelta al País Vasco and Volta a Catalunya.
Although Kelly never won the World Road Race Championships, he twice won bronze medals (1982 & 1989) & also finished 5th in 1987, the year compatriot Stephen Roche won gold. Kelly was first to be ranked No.1 when the FICP rankings were introduced in March 1984, a position he held for a record six years. In the 1984 season, Kelly achieved 33 victories.

As we all know, great nutrition is essential for cyclists. The way that pro cyclists approach nutrition has also changed hugely over the years.
Hannah Grant is one of cycling's top chefs, and Sean Kelly is one of the greatest cobbled classics riders of all time. As we were filming at Paris-Roubaix, Hannah made steak pavé with sweet potatoes, sauteed spinach and garlic, and pomegranate to finish.
BORA 10|10 Recipe: Hannah Grant's Steak and sweet potato pavé
400g beef rump/tender loin (lean beef)
500g sweet potato
500g carrots
200g fresh spinach
2 cloves garlic
Olive oil
Splash of white wine
Handful of roasted pine nuts
Fresh herbs and lemon
Pomegranate seeds
Salt and pepper
10 mins. preparation | 10 mins. cooking
Cut beef into steaks and season with salt and pepper. Sear off at high heat on both sides. Turn down the heat and cook 2-3 mins. on each side at medium heat until red
juices comes to the surface. Let the steak rest for 5 mins. before cutting it into “pavés”.
Heat up a pan with olive oil and sauté the garlic for a minute. Add white wine, reduce for 30 seconds, then add spinach and watercress. Season with salt and pepper and add roasted pine nuts.
Finish with pomegranate seeds, fresh herbs and lemon zest to your liking.

Spinach: antioxidants, disease prevention, rich in dietary fiber, good source of iron
Sweet potato: slow release carbohydrate, high in antioxidants, easy to digest
Garlic: anti-inflammatory, boosts immune system, rich in antioxidants
Beef: best source of essential amino acids and iron

You can’t talk about cycling’s greatest hardmen without talking about Sean Kelly. The Irishman was the rare all-rounder who could sprint, climb and time trial, but what really propelled him to an astonishing 193 wins during an 18-year pro career was an unrelenting, unbreakable tenacity and grit.
Kelly rode Mavic wheels and gear for most of his career, and to this day his personal mechanic is part of Mavic’s famed Service Course. He relished the hardest races and could endure the harshest conditions better than anyone. He dominated the Paris-Nice stage race throughout the ’80s with seven wins and also piled up victories at grueling classics like Paris-Roubaix, Liège-Bastogne-Liège and Milan-San Remo.

Ireland's Greatest ever sportsman?
John James 'Sean' Kelly (born 24 May 1956[1]) is an Irish former professional road bicycle racer. He was one of the most successful road cyclists of the 1980s, and one of the finest classics riders of all time. From turning professional in 1977 until his retirement in 1994, he won nine monument classics, and 193 professional races in total. He won Paris--Nice seven years in a row and the first UCI Road World Cup in 1989. He won the 1988 Vuelta a España and had multiple wins in the Giro di Lombardia, Milan -- San Remo, Paris--Roubaix and Liège--Bastogne--Liège. Other victories include the Critérium International, Grand Prix des Nations and smaller tours including the Tour de Suisse, Vuelta al País Vasco and Volta a Catalunya.
Although Kelly never won the World Road Race Championships, he twice won bronze medals (1982 & 1989) & also finished 5th in 1987, the year compatriot Stephen Roche won gold. Kelly was first to be ranked No.1 when the FICP rankings were introduced in March 1984, a position he held for a record six years. In the 1984 season, Kelly achieved 33 victories.

As we all know, great nutrition is essential for cyclists. The way that pro cyclists approach nutrition has also changed hugely over the years.
Hannah Grant is one of cycling's top chefs, and Sean Kelly is one of the greatest cobbled classics riders of all time. As we were filming at Paris-Roubaix, Hannah made steak pavé with sweet potatoes, sauteed spinach and garlic, and pomegranate to finish.
BORA 10|10 Recipe: Hannah Grant's Steak and sweet potato pavé
400g beef rump/tender loin (lean beef)
500g sweet potato
500g carrots
200g fresh spinach
2 cloves garlic
Olive oil
Splash of white wine
Handful of roasted pine nuts
Fresh herbs and lemon
Pomegranate seeds
Salt and pepper
10 mins. preparation | 10 mins. cooking
Cut beef into steaks and season with salt and pepper. Sear off at high heat on both sides. Turn down the heat and cook 2-3 mins. on each side at medium heat until red
juices comes to the surface. Let the steak rest for 5 mins. before cutting it into “pavés”.
Heat up a pan with olive oil and sauté the garlic for a minute. Add white wine, reduce for 30 seconds, then add spinach and watercress. Season with salt and pepper and add roasted pine nuts.
Finish with pomegranate seeds, fresh herbs and lemon zest to your liking.

Seán Kelly (Irish politician)
Seán Kelly (born 26 April 1952) is an Irish politician and Member of the European Parliament (MEP) for the South constituency. He is a member of Fine Gael, part of the European People's Party.
He served as the 34th President of the Gaelic Athletic Association (2003–06). He was the first Kerry man to hold that office being elected at the first attempt by a record margin at the GAA Congress in 2002. In July 2006 he took up the position of Executive Chairman of the Irish Institute of Sport, a body that was set up in Ireland to support elite athletes and players, and served as Executive President until he announced his resignation in July 2008.
Early and personal life
Kelly was born in Knockataggle, Kilcummin, Killarney, County Kerry in 1952. He was born into a family that was deeply involved in the Gaelic Athletic Association. His grandfather had been chairman of the local club and his four uncles had distinguished playing careers, with his uncle, also Seán Kelly, starring at full-forward for Kerry in their All-Ireland Championship success over Armagh in 1953. He is a first cousin to Fionnuala O'Kelly, wife of the current Taoiseach Enda Kenny.
