#SomaliArchive | SUBSCRIBE for Daily High-Definition Videos from Somalia Hosted by www.keydmedia.net - Kismayo's large docks are situated on a peninsula on the Indian Ocean coast. Formerly one of the Bajuni Islands, the peninsula was subsequently connected by a narrow causeway when the port was built, with United States assistance, in 1964. The port served as a base for the Somali Navy as well as the Soviet Navy after the military coup in Somalia in 1969. Somali fighters 'capture Kismayo' - 27 Aug 08
Somalia's President and Prime Minister may finally be showing signs of trying to work together. But while they've been squabbling, the opposition has been mobilising. On Friday, fighters took over the key southern port of Kismayo, after a week of fierce fighting with local clans, who had control of the city. Al Jazeera gained exclusive access to Kismayo, Rosie Garthwaite has our report.

AMISOM captures town near Kismayu
www.ntv.co.ke KDF soldiers supported by Somali government forces have captured Janaa Cabdalla town, a stronghold of Al Shabaab, following a three-day operation. Janaa Cabdalla is located 50 kilometres to the west of the port city of Kismayo in the Lower Jubba region. The operation, which was conducted by the Kenyan contingent of AMISOM, also recovered a cache of weapons and ammunition. Two AMISOM troops and five SNA soldiers sustained minor injuries and have been evacuated to Dobley for medical attention. Its capture signifies a milestone in the AMISOM offensive to liberate the Indian Ocean port city. Kismayo, Somalia's third largest city is considered the hub of Al-Shabaab. The strategic town has seen some of the most intensified battles since the deployment of the Kenyan troops in mid-October 2011. Kenyan naval warships and helicopter gunships are shelling Al-Shabaab's positions in Kismayo. The capture came as the UN humanitarian official for Somalia discussed with Kenyan officials how to protect civilians as the military operations to take Kismayo intensify.

L'exil

Obstetric fistula surgery for women from southern Somalia and Somaliland
Thoughout 9 months in 2010 and 2011, WAHA International provided 168 women from Mogadishu, Kismayo and around Somaliland with obstetric fistula surgery. Transport was arranged for women in Southern Somalia to come to Somaliland for surgery by bus and airplane. WAHA worked with a network of health personnel in south and central Somalia, and in partnership with Edna Adan Hospital and Boroma Fistula hospital in Somaliland and used SMS campaigns to help find the patients, transport them and provide them with medical care.
This region has one of the worst maternal health figures in the world. 1 out of every 14 women die in childbirth. Many others survive but with debilitating injuries such as obstetric fistula. Access to emergency obstetric care is extremely difficult, as is access to fistula care

Kenya to 'continue fighting al-Shabab'
Kenyan troops and Somali government forces say they have captured the key al-Shabab base of Tabda and killed 75 fighters. The joint offensive is in retaliation for al-Shabab raids into Kenya to kidnap westerners. Kenya says it has a right to defend itself and operations like these will continue for as long as al-Shabab threatens to attack its territory. Catherine Soi reports from the Kenya-Somalia border.
