The Shayar (Xayar) County (Chinese: 沙雅县; pinyin: Shāyǎ Xiàn; Uyghur: شايار ناھىيىسى, ULY: Shayar Nahiyisi, UPNY: Xayar Nah̡iyisi?) is a county in the East Turkistan Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region and is under the administration of the Aqsu Prefecture. It contains an area of 31,868 km2. According to the 2004 census it has a population of 210,000. It is the site of a prison of unknown size which houses political prisoners such as the famous human rights lawyer Gao Zhisheng 高智晟.

URUMQI, China (Reuters) - An attack at a train station in China's western city of Urumqi was carried out by two religious extremists who both died in the blast, the government said on Thursday ... It identified one of them as Sedierding Shawuti, a 39-year-old man from Xayar county in Xinjiang's Aksu region. The man is a member of the Muslim Uighur minority, judging by his name.
