Plean is a former mining village, in the Stirling Council area of central Scotland located on the main A9 road from Falkirk. At the 2001 census, Plean had a population of 1,740. Plean has some historic buildings, some council houses and an estate. ^[1]

Plean has a Church of Scotland Church, which has an attached graveyard.

A private housing estate was built recently in Plean, consisting of White Coloured Houses and Attached Playground.

William Simpson's Home, a local charity is based in Plean. The William Simpson's Home provides Residential Social Care for 44 men with Alcohol Related Brain Damage with underlying mental health illness. Respite Care for 6 Service Users mixed gender as well as 10 day care places, seven days per week. Vocational Training through our Approved Centre status for the delivery of S.V.Qs Levels 2,3,4 also A units and V units. Care Service to 11 of Scotland's Unitary Authorities.

Plean Country Park is a large country park located in Plean. Entry is free and the park is maintained by Stirling Council.

There is also a Primary School in Plean, East Plean Primary which is a histroic building, its Headteacher is Connie Desmond. East Plean Primary School is a traditional building dating from 1874. Many of the original features of the building have been retained in the refurbishment of the school, which was completed in summer 2000.

The school consists of a central hall, seven good sized classrooms, a general-purpose room, a well-stocked library/computer suite and resource room. A new purpose built nursery was completed in August 2000 with places for 20children in the morning session and 20 children in the afternoon session. Unfortunately the school building was damaged beyond repair in November 2010. A fire ripped through the school when it was deliberately started in a hut, to the rear. The building has been torn down and a new modern school being built on the original site.

Plean also has a Petrol Station, A Chip Shop, A small clinic and a small library. Nearby Plean or Plane Castle, was once a home of the Somerville family. It was restored from ruin twice in the twentieth century and is now a private house.^[2]

On the 6th of November 2010, Plean's primary school was burnt down,the cause was arson by local youth. ^[3]

Famous people[link]

Campbell Forsyth, the Kilmarnock and Scotland international goalkeeper was born in Plean in 1939.^[4]
