UN envoy calls for interim Syria government
Lakhdar Brahimi, the joint UN-Arab League special envoy to Syria, has called for a transitional unity government in the country. But a similar plan proposed in June never saw the light of day. And the Syrian National Coalition, the main opposition group, has already laid out its terms. Al Jazeera's Osama Bin Javaid reports.

"2nd Battle of Fallujah" Nov - Dec 2004
The Second Battle of Fallujah (code-named Operation Al-Fajr (Arabic, "the dawn") and Operation Phantom Fury) was a joint US, Iraqi, and British offensive in November and December 2004. It was led by the US Marine Corps against the Iraqi insurgency stronghold in the city of Fallujah and was authorized by the US-appointed Iraqi Interim Government. The US military called it "some of the heaviest urban combat US Marines have been involved in since the Battle of Huế City in Vietnam in 1968.

FSA attacks and ambush Turkey prepared to retaliate against border attacks by Syria
Turkey has begun evacuating villages close to its border with Syria and scrambled its air force as the Assad regime bombarded rebel positions close to the frontier fence. At least 1000 people fled villages near the border town of Ceylanpinar, Turkish media said. The Syrian air force maintained its attacks of Ras al-Ayn, the Syrian town separated from Ceylanpinar by a wire fence. As Turkish jets circled the area, the Defence Minister, Ismet Yilmaz, ordered the air force to be prepared to retaliate in case of Syrian incursions. ''The necessary response will be given to Syrian planes and helicopters that violate our border,'' he said. Advertisement There were also reports from the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights that at least 18 regime soldiers were killed by rebel fighters as they overran a military post in the area. Rebel advances in Syria's major cities during the northern summer have stopped but they are gradually encircling the edges of the Syrian state, seizing border crossings with Turkey, attacking towns near the frontier with Iraq, and most recently taking villages next to the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights. The Israeli Defence Minister, Ehud Barak, toured the Golan to see the situation. On Sunday and Monday there were exchanges of fire over that border. ''Almost all of the villages, from the foot of this ridge to the very top, are already in the hands of the Syrian rebels,'' he said. ''The Syrian army is displaying ever-diminishing efficiency.'' The worsening ...

FOREIGN INTERVENTION in SYRIA within DAYS: As France recognise REBEL group as sole SYRIA VOICE
FOREIGN INTERVENTION in SYRIA within DAYS: As France recognise REBEL group as sole SYRIA VOICE France is the first of the European countries to fully recognize the Syrian opposition coalition as the "sole legitimate representative" of the Syrian people. Meanwhile the US calls it "a legitimate representative" but is yet to fully recognize it. "I announce today that France recognizes the Syrian national coalition as the sole legitimate representative of the Syrian people and as the future government of a democratic Syria which will allow for an end to Bashar al-Assad's regime," President Hollande told a news conference in Paris. On Sunday in Doha, Syrian opposition groups finally agreed to create a new leadership body united against President Bashar Assad. The coalition emerged after days of talks sponsored by foreign governments pushing for regime change in the embattled nation. The US has also recognized the National Coalition of Forces of the Syrian Revolution and Opposition as "a legitimate representative" of the Syrian people but stopped short of describing it as the "sole" representative. Washington stressed that the nascent group must first demonstrate its ability to represent Syrians inside the country. "We look forward to supporting the national coalition as it charts a course for the end of Assad's bloody rule, and marks the start, we believe, of a peaceful, just and democratic future for the people of Syria," US State Department spokesman Mark Toner said ...

Syria CIVIL WAR - OBAMA signed SECRET order allowing CIA to HELP REBELS
Syria CIVIL WAR - OBAMA signed SECRET order allowing CIA to HELP REBELS US President Barack Obama has signed a secret order allowing the CIA and other American agencies to support rebels seeking to overthrow the Assad regime, a US government source told Reuters. Obama reportedly gave the order, known as an intelligence "finding", earlier this year. The presidential finding also provides for US collaboration with a secret command center operated by Turkey and its allies. The full extent of the assistance the "finding" allows the CIA to give the Syrian rebels is unclear. It is also unknown precisely when Obama signed the order. The Obama administration has been open about providing non-military support to the Syrian opposition. On Wednesday, the State Department said it had allotted a total of $25 million for "non-lethal" assistance to the Free Syrian Army. Some of that money may be used to buy communications devices such as encrypted radios, a US official said. The State Department also said the United States has set aside $64 million in humanitarian aid for the Syrian people. Last year, Obama also signed an initial "finding" authorizing US support for Libyan rebels seeking to overthrow Muammar Gaddafi. Also on Wednesday, the US Treasury confirmed it had granted authorization for Washington's representative of the Free Syrian Army to conduct financial transactions on behalf of the rebel group. Reports that the Syrian Support Group had been allowed to do so first appeared ...

This is what happens to people who commit murder
Saddam Hussein Abd al-Majid al-Tikriti (Arabic: صدام حسين عبد المجيد التكريتي Ṣaddām Ḥusayn ʿAbd al-Maǧīd al-Tikrītī; 28 April 1937 -- 30 December 2006) was the fifth President of Iraq, serving in this capacity from 16 July 1979 until 9 April 2003. A leading member of the revolutionary Arab Socialist Ba'ath Party, and later, the Baghdad-based Ba'ath Party and its regional organisation Ba'ath Party -- Iraq Region, which espoused ba'athism, a mix of Arab nationalism and Arab socialism, Saddam played a key role in the 1968 coup, later referred to as the 17 July Revolution, that brought the party to long-term power of Iraq. As vice president under the ailing General Ahmed Hassan al-Bakr, and at a time when many groups were considered capable of overthrowing the government, Saddam created security forces through which he tightly controlled conflict between the government and the armed forces. In the early 1970s, Saddam nationalized oil and other industries. The state-owned banks were put under his control, leaving the system eventually insolvent mostly due to the Iran--Iraq War, the Gulf War, and UN sanctions. Through the 1970s, Saddam cemented his authority over the apparatuses of government as oil money helped Iraq's economy to grow at a rapid pace. Positions of power in the country were filled with Sunnis, a minority that made up only a fifth of the population. Saddam suppressed several movements, particularly Shi'a and Kurdish movements seeking to overthrow the government ...

British Foreign Secretary optimistic about Egypt's new government
British Foreign Secretary William Hague said on Wednesday the United Kingdom has no intention of allowing access to funds in the UK belonging to Egypt's former president Hosni Mubarak and his family, adding that he looks forward to the upcoming parliamentary elections in Egypt. "[The] freezing of assets has been done in line with Egyptian requests," Hague said in an exclusive interview with Al Arabiya, adding that "there is no lack of willingness from the part of the British government to deal with this but it has to be done in a way that is legally correct." Reports emerged earlier this month that the UK government was failing in its commitment to freeze assets of those belonging to Mubarak's regime, ousted from power last year following a mass uprising in the country. During the interview, Hague repeatedly said his country welcomes the transition to democracy in Egypt, adding that Britain does not wish to interfere. "With their [Egypt's] now legitimately and elected president in due course parliament to help the economic links to thrive and to help the people of Egypt to achieve their aspirations but we are not going to comment on their political campaigns or amendments to their constitutional drafts," Hague said. He also congratulated President Mursi after his election and said he "look[s] forward to see the writing of the new constitution for the parliamentary elections." Hague expressed Britain's desire to welcome Egypt's president, saying: "I delivered a letter to ...

General Franks will provide details from Tampa... 00:51:41 We need to all remind ourselves that thousands of Americans & other nationals were killed on September 11th. When we began the attack in Afghanistan on October 7th, we made clear that our goals included removing the Taliban government & ending Afghanistan as a haven for terrorists, & we've made very good progress on both. But as I've said repeatedly, the task is far from over. Not all Taliban & al Qaeda forces have been defeated. Substantial pockets of resistance remain. They're determined. They're dangerous. They will not give up without a fight. They are hiding in the villages & in the mountains & just across the borders, in a number of directions from Afghanistan, & they're waiting for their opportunities. We have said that repeatedly. Their goal is the opposite of ours. Their goal is to reconstitute, to try to throw out the new interim government of Afghanistan, to kill coalition forces & to try regain the ability to use Afghanistan as a base for terrorist operations &, as a by-product, repress the Afghan people. And we intend to prevent them from doing that. The pocket of al Qaeda at Shahi-Kot area, where this operation is ...

Kofi Annan brings US-Russia together to bring a end to the TRAGIC events happening in SYRIA everyday
Kofi Annan brings US-RUSSIA together to bring a end to the TRAGIC events happening in SYRIA everyday The US secretary of state and her Russian counterpart will push to find common ground on the Syrian conflict at a summit in St Petersburg. The meeting comes as bomb blasts struck Damascus and Syrian President Assad pledged to "annihilate terrorists." The two powers are expected to discuss Kofi Annan's unity government plan ahead of a crucial meeting on Syria in Geneva on Saturday, which will bring together UN Security Council members, European and some Middle East countries. Annan's plan does not call for Assad's ouster, but pushes for the creation of a transitional government that would exclude figures that jeopardize stability. Washington is a strong advocate of a political transition plan in Syria that stipulates the removal of President Assad. However, Russia categorically opposes the idea that other countries should dictate the future of Syria, believing that the decision is up to Syrians themselves. "We will not support and cannot support any meddling from outside or any imposition of recipes. This also concerns the fate of the president of the country, Bashar al-Assad," Russia's Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on the eve of the meeting. A number of opposition groups, including the Free Syria Army have refused to comply with any plan that does not include the step-down of Assad. The outcome of Clinton and Lavrov's meeting in St Petersburg could set the precedent ...

Published on Jul 1, 2012 by AlJazeeraEnglish One of Syria's main opposition groups, the Syrian National Council (SNC) says it will not work with President Bashar al-Assad in a potential transitional government. This announcement came after foreign ministers at a UN meeting in Geneva agreed on Saturday to a new peace plan that leaves open a possible role for Assad in a post-conflict Syria. Manal Omar Discusses Reconciliation in a Transformed Libya
Manal Omar, director of Iraq, Iran, and North Africa Programs at the US Institute of Peace, discusses efforts to promote reconciliation and governance in a Libya emerging from years of dictatorship. Details: bit.ly - Reconciliation: As cities across Libya joined the revolution to overthrow Moammar Qaddafi, Omar and others from USIP began working with rebel groups as they planned for a post-Qaddafi future. "One of the crucial elements was bringing up the issue of national reconciliation," Omar says. "We were able to talk about the truth and reconciliation process that happened in other countries as early as August 2011. Only a few weeks later, Qaddafi fell, and people were able to see the relevance of the discussion that took place." USIP would continue to support Libya's transitional government and civil society organizations throughout 2012. - Conflict resolution and constitution-making: During USIP's ongoing work in Libya, it became clear that one of the country's main needs was training facilitators in conflict resolution, negotiation, and facilitation skills. This training "was not only needed in terms of resolving conflict, but in terms of being able to identify issues beforehand, so that there would be an ability to prevent conflict before it arises," Omar says. At the same time, USIP has also advised on two of the biggest issues facing Libya: the constitution-making process and the implementation of the rule of law across the country through increased access to ...
