On DVD in March 2012, Hal Hartley's new film Meanwhile concerns Joe Fulton, a man who can do anything from fixing your sink to arranging international financing for a construction project. He produces online advertising and he's written a big fat novel. He's also a pretty good drummer. But success eludes him. For Joe can't keep himself from fixing other people's problems. His own ambitions are constantly interrupted by his willingness and ability to go out of his way for others.

THE ARMY OF LUCK, OR THE GLOBAL PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS
The Maneki Neko (jap., literally Beckoning Cat; aka Lucky Cat, Money Cat) is a common Japanese figurine which is believed to bring luck, attract customers and bring prosperity. The Lucky Cat waves with the raised left paw and holds a historic coin in front of itself with the right one. The Lucky Cat as talisman and selling product is wide-spread in Asia and meanwhile almost all over the world.
Luck is associated here with monetary and material prosperity. As talisman it is spread all over asian countries. For tourists the Lucky Cat became a kind of pop style Manga character which appears in growing numbers in western private households. As kitschy-petite like exotic souvenir it refers to a certain idea of western lifestyle.
The material element of the installation»The Global Pursuit of Happiness, or: The Army of Luck« is the »Lucky Cats' Matrix«. It contains 520 shiny golden XXL Lucky Cats made of plastics which are arranged in 40 rows and 13 columns on a ramp-like stand made of aluminum (W 8 m, H 3 m, D 2 m).
Visitors experience the Lucky Cats' Matrix as a dot-matrix display which consists of 520 waving paw grid points as its »pixels«. In each cat a servomotor is built in to control the paws move exactly in position and speed.
The visitors are requested imaginarily by the cats to interact as users: "Your concept of happiness is our lucky command. Write it on the keyboard".
Words and sentences up to 40 characters can be put in and are displayed clearly visible with the paws letter by letter as sliding text marquee. So to say, the users »choreograph« the Lucky Cats performance wordwise. Literally it is the »inscription« of an idea of happiness or a wish in the Lucky Cats' bodies by moving their paws forward and backward.
For users, the Lucky Cats become multiplied »avatars« in the world of chance and happiness. But the Lucky Cats are also able to perform spontaneously as well: they can show 25 different salutatory and signalizing gestures as well as mass movements like the »Mexican Wave« or an ecstatic »hyperkinesis«. Every displayed sentence triggers audio events – sound samples of mass or group events, like entertainment shows, political speeches, demonstrations, sport events, parades, accidents, etc. from the beginning of the last century until today. The sounds express auditorily different states of mind, like joy, euphoria, desire, fear, hate, aggression and resignation, astonishment, outrage, pain, panic, desperation and fanatical excitement. The sounds are played in random order and unpredictable combinations. Different contexts and changing settings are emerging.
Are the Lucky Cats »one-armed bandits«? Or is it a gesture in the context of a political or religious movement? Is it a just a happy waving of the fun-loving, hedonistic society? Or is the assembly of Lucky Cats a revolutionary deployment of »wish machines« as »army of luck« or is it just another marketing campaign?
The lined up, gold-reflecting mass of the Lucky Cats in the matrix appears almost as an insubstantially copy-paste-animation. The Lucky Cats in the matrix as an industrial made product become an »ornament of the masses« for repetetive-stererotype and globalized-industrialized ideals. Do we need more and more Lucky Cats to generate more and more prosperity for more and more people?

Behind the scenes
Here is the story. A little crazy. My producer in France told me about a contest made by Louis Vuitton around the theme "What a journey means to you ?". But, we were October 15th and the deadline was two weeks later. She suggested me to create an original content. But in such a short time, the only thing I replied was "No way !" And that's precisely when I said that, that I swore I would do something. I needed some serious help to pull out something so fast.
I called my friend Denis, and moved to his appartment in Brussels. Together, in a day and half, we found several ideas. The next day, we decided to go with the nudes. And almost immediately thought "Wait, no way we gonna find people to get naked... For free ?" But we still kept on.
We finished our treatment: http://www.jjpous.com/louisvuitton/treatment.pdf
Sent it to everyone that could - even remotely - help us. Couldn't get the back up from my producer in France, as it wasn't a good time for them. One of the most important helper for this project was out... We had to find serious help and fast. Sophia, my dear producer from Hong Kong (on the music video I made earlier), introduced me her friend Stanley. She was amazing. From Hong Kong as well, she moved to Belgium to work on films. And we met, and talked, and talked. At the end of the day, we had a production plan, a budget (our own), a team, camera and lenses, lighting equipment. Meanwhile, we gathered almost everything for free in Paris: models, lighting, studio. But both there and in Brussels, we lacked of essential things: lenses and camera, or models.
A week went through, our chances were narrowing. I asked my producer in the Netherlands, Raymond, if he could help us. And it was hard to believe. In 5 minutes of chat, we had a studio. In a day, a D.O.P. In three days, everything. Literally. We were stunned. One more big gift: my dear photographer Tommy, met on the set of my earlier music video, was willing to shoot amazing stills for us. So we all moved there, met each other and the team, talked through the storyboard that was freshly finished from the night before: http://www.jjpous.com/louisvuitton/storyboard.pdf
Next day morning, 6am: we wake up, go to the studio half-asleep. With one more challenge. 40 shots, 4 hours make-up, models that have to leave at 7pm, extremely tight budget that doesn't allow us to go overtime. Especially when a whole team of hard-working volunteers is willing to help graciously. And the shooting went, peacefully but neat and fast. Well, with a few improvisations, last minute changes, limited shot dropping and adaptation to the situation. But also nice little extras, free from the storyboard while framing most shots.
And... It's like the beat never gets slower. October 25th. 5 days left. And we have to do: editing, visual effects, music, sound design. And: we have one computer down, the sound design hardware is left in Paris, we couldn't shoot on green screen because of our lighting intention. So: we rush to repair the computer, we rush to Paris to pick up the data, we rush to remove frame-by-frame each background to isolate the characters.
October 30th, 2 hours before the deadline. Film is finally finished, but, the icing on the cake: the Internet connection is down. We ran through Brussels to find a cybercafé still opened. 1 hour left, we enter into one. And... Handle the project on time.
Two weeks earlier, we had no idea of what we would do.

New York Times Magazine - Year In Ideas
The Long-Life-Span Smartphone. A great idea, as I am tired of getting a new phone every 2 years. Check out all the Ideas here http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2010/12/19/magazine/ideas2010.html
From the article:
"In the United States, a cellphone’s average life span is 18 months, and yet fewer than 1 percent of these phones are estimated to be recycled. As an antidote to this pattern of rapid obsolescence, the British design-consulting firm Kinneir Dufort developed its Revive smartphone concept, proposing a device that can evolve over time rather than be cast aside when it breaks or something newer and shinier hits the market. Unlike existing products on the market, it would be designed for easy disassembly, so the end user could replace or upgrade components without tossing the entire phone.
Service providers and manufacturers would be able to charge for these improvements, replacing revenue they would have earned from selling new phones. To help it age gracefully, Revive would be made from materials — leathers, metals and plastic composites — that acquire a patina from wear. A service subscription, meanwhile, would offer the user credits the longer he held on to the phone, making him a “stakeholder” with an investment in the longevity of the product." JESSE ASHLOCK

"THE DREAM TEAM" - NBATV DOCUMENTARY
***KEEHS PRODUCTIONS did not produce this video but is showcasing it
Twenty years after The Dream Team dominated unlike any other sports team in Olympic history, NBA TV's behind the scenes look at the squad brought back many moments of nostalgia.
The documentary entitled The Dream Team, narrated by Edward Burns, began by looking at the history of Olympic basketball, including how the Soviet Union team won the gold in 1972 and 1988 just when it seemed like the Americans'amateur players were good enough to win the gold every year.
In fact, were it not for FIBA and the NBA getting together to change the rules to allow NBA players to play on the Olympic team, there would be no dream team.
It then detailed how each player made their decision to join the Olympic squad, as 11 future Hall-of-Famers and one of the NCAA's most well-known players, Christian Laettner, made up the roster. One story that was addressed very quickly was that of Isiah Thomas not being selected on the team thanks to a rocky relationship between Thomas and Michael Jordan.
That being said, there were many other rivalries and story-lines that dominated this team. Magic Johnson was retired from the NBA after contracting the HIV virus, while Larry Bird couldn't play in four of seven Eastern Conference semifinal games against the Cleveland Cavaliers leading up to the Olympics due to chronic back issues.
This meant that both individuals of arguably the biggest player rivalry of the 1980s was ending, as both were teammates on maybe the greatest team ever assembled.
Meanwhile, after two consecutive titles, Jordan was ready to officially take over the mantel of the best player in basketball from these two legends. Though Magic and Larry, who were the team's captains, did their best to prevent him to do so in a team-friendly way, even they admitted their reign was over during the Dream Team experience.
Another potential issue was the relationship between Jordan and the late Chuck Daly, who had beaten Jordan for a few years as coach of the Bad Boy Pistons. But this documentary showed that these two became great friends, and the Pistons-Bulls intensity never seemed to come up.
Finally, the battle of the best power forwards in the game happened in practices between Karl Malone and Charles Barkley, but the individual matchups in practice led to healthy competition.
While this team was nicknamed The Dream Team, the Olympians had a lot of issues in practice and in playing the U.S. Select College Team in scrimmages. Humbling experiences let this team know that they always had to play to win, and they learned those lessons after early struggles. This goes to show that not only it wasn't always perfect for the squad, but that all these athletes fed off adversity and competition unlike any Olympic team before and after.
Despite Chuck Daly not being interviewed for this documentary due to his death in 2009, his personality and methods were explained extremely well through player interviews, and even by then assistant coach and current USA coach Mike Krzyzewski. Daly handled massive personalities in Detroit and was the perfect coach to motivate this band of competitors and rivals, who all were about winning.
MJ's physical and mental endurance was so much on full display that interviews of fellow players showed that they were even in awe of not only his basketball ability, but how he conducted himself on a minute-to-minute basis. They were amazed at his stamina.
For young basketball fans, NBA TV's The Dream Team is a great look into Jordan and all of the greats from a generation earlier, as they will grow an appreciation for the type of effort and charisma each of these players showed on a daily basis.
Plus, the documentary makes it clear that The Dream Team changed the game of basketball not just in the NBA, but on a global scale, as international players took pictures and shook hands of NBA players during games. The international growth of the game of basketball led to the influx of foreign players in the NBA.
****Dream Team Lineup Starters: Center: Patrick Ewing Power Forward: Charles Barkley Small Forward: Larry Bird Shooting Guard: Michael Jordan Point Guard: Magic Johnson Bench: Center: David Robinson Power Forward: Karl Malone Small Forward: Scottie Pippen Shooting Guard: Clyde Drexler Point Guard: John Stockton 11th and 12th of the bench: Shooting Guard: Chris Mullin Small Forward: Christian Laettner (college player)
