Time for a National Popular Vote?
This campaign season has reminded many of us of just how complicated and seemingly illogical our presidential elections can be. For example, why is Iowa the first caucus in the nation and New Hampshire the first primary? The two states aren't exactly what you would call representative of the entire country. Then, when Rick Santorum won in 3 states earlier this week, more questions come up. What's the point if you don't actually win anything? There's a movement in the country to enact a national popular vote plan, and while it faces fierce Republican opposition, does it just make sense? Talk radio host David Sirota weighs in.

US President Chosen by Electors, Not Popular Vote
While millions of Americans will cast ballots for president in November, their votes do not directly send one of the candidates to the White House. In this segment of How America Elects, VOA's Jeffrey Young explains that the selection of the president is actually done by a group called the "Electoral College."

Ron Paul Has Won 11 States!
The Bilzerian Report (News Commentary): thebilzerianreport.com Even though Ron Paul lost the popular vote in every state so far, he has now won the majority of the delegates in 11 states. And the delegate count happens to be the only thing that matters when it comes to electing nominees. Thank you Founding Fathers for the electoral college system. And thank you Ron Paul people who have used that system as the Founding Fathers' intended, which was to drown out the voices of the masses of idiots. Follow me on Twitter: twitter.com

Popular Culture - Vote Quayle For Congressman
James Danforth "Dan" Quayle (born February 4, 1947) served as the 44th Vice President of the United States, serving with President George HW Bush (1989--1993). He served as a US Representative and US Senator from the state of Indiana. Quayle was born in Indianapolis but spent most of his childhood living in Arizona. He married Marilyn Tucker in 1972 and obtained his JD from Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law in 1974. He practiced law in Huntington, Indiana with his wife before being elected to the United States Congress in 1976, aged 29. In 1980, Quayle was elected to the Senate. In 1988, Vice President George HW Bush was nominated for the presidency by the Republican Party and asked his party to nominate Quayle as his vice presidential running mate. Although this choice was met with some dismay, the Bush/Quayle ticket won the 1988 election over Democrats Michael Dukakis and Lloyd Bentsen. As vice president, Quayle made official visits to 47 countries and was appointed chairman of the National Space Council. He secured re-nomination for vice-president in 1992 but the Bush/Quayle ticket was defeated by Democrat Bill Clinton and his vice-presidential running mate, Al Gore. In 1996, he published his memoirs entitled Standing Firm but declined to run for public office in this time period due to being afflicted by phlebitis. He sought the Republican presidential nomination in 2000, but withdrew and supported George W. Bush. Quayle and his wife currently reside ...

ZeroHedge Blogger Bob English outlines how Bernanke and the Fed could finally go Bankrupt!
Follow us @ twitter.com twitter.com Welcome to Capital Account. The Federal Reserve came out with its interest rate decision today. They voted to keep rates at essentially zero, and hinted that they expect them to stay there until at least late 2014. Before we get into the what this decision means with our guest English Bob, contributing editor for Zero Hedge, let's start with a little story. Once upon a time, there were these things called "prices." The market (Ie You, me and joe six-pack down the street) determined them with every single transaction we made. Although we still use prices in our everyday lives in order to make decisions, these prices are no longer freely determined by the market. They are distorted, and the source of that distortion rests at the FOMC. The Federal Reserve and global central banks, by controlling interest rates (the price of money) through their control of the supply of money and credit, have destroyed the market's price mechanism. The difference between direct price controls, like what we have seen in communist countries, and what we have in the United States today, is only one of degree. The government does not set the price of bananas or computers, but it does set the price of money and by doing so, distorts prices across the entire economy, thus destroying price discovery and the very essence of a free market. Another way to think of the FOMC's setting of interest rates is to compare it with rigged "democratic" elections. Let' shave a ...

Bicycles, Rolling Stops, and the Idaho Stop
The Oregon legislature is considering passage of a law that would allow bicycle riders to treat stop signs as yield signs. These "rolling stops" would allow bike riders to preserve some of the momentum they depend upon for efficient travel, just so long as they don't infringe on the safety and rights of others.
The law is based on one that's been successful in Idaho for the last 27 years, so it's come to be known as the "Idaho Stop" law.
There's some controversy - and whole lot of misunderstanding - surrounding the proposed Idaho Stop law. I thought I could clear some of it up with the magic of animation.
Music: "Celebrated Shoo Fly Galop" by W.L. Hayden, performed by Lucas Gonze (soupgreens.com and gonze.com). Used under Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 license.
UPDATE: This particular piece of legislation failed to make it to a vote: http://bikeportland.org/2009/04/20/no-idaho-stops-in-oregon-law-fails-to-win-necessary-support-17477 However, the notion of lightening regulation on bikes hasn't gone away entirely, most recently turning up in the "gut and stuff" placeholder language of a law that would allow people on bikes to proceed were a stoplight not to sense them: http://bikeportland.org/2011/02/02/false-alarm-on-idaho-stop-law-47209
And the idea of Idaho Stop has proven popular all over the world, as is indicated at least in part by the continued spread of this video, which was originally meant only for the eyes of Oregon legislators and citizens, to convince them of the common sense behind this law.

Special Thanks to Scott Draves, Founder of the Electric Sheep
created for The Filmshop Presents...Eye Candy
Electric Sheep is a collaborative abstract artwork founded by Scott Draves. It's run by thousands of people all over the world, and can be installed on any ordinary PC or Mac. When these computers "sleep", the Electric Sheep comes on and the computers communicate with each other by the internet to share the work of creating morphing abstract animations known as "sheep".
Anyone watching one of these computers may vote for their favorite animations using the keyboard. The more popular sheep live longer and reproduce according to a genetic algorithm with mutation and cross-over. Hence the flock evolves to please its global audience. You can also design your own sheep and submit them to the gene pool.
The result is a collective "android dream", blending man and machine to create an artificial lifeform.

Santorum Wins Alabama, Mississippi & Romney A Weak Front-Runner
Via Think Progress: "Despite his triumphs in Alabama and Mississippi, Rick Santorum still walked away with fewer delegates last night than Mitt Romney, who took smaller wins in Hawaii and American Somoa. In the delegate race, which ultimately determines the nominee for the Republican Party, Romney has taken more than 50 percent so far. But, the media's focus on the delegate count obscures how poorly Romney has fared...". How much of the 'popular vote' has Romney gained? Youth Vote 2012: Epic Fail?!
"College students are not expected to make a huge splash in this election. Part of this belief stems from anecdotal articles, but it's also based on polling by the Pew Research Center and others. Some conservatives are just fine with this. Jonah Goldberg, editor-at-large of the National Review Online, thinks young people are so "frickin' stupid," he'd rather them not vote at all." We've got a great info graphic on young voters in America! Watch the video and find out more with John Iadarola and Lisa Ferguson! What do you think of this new data?
