ANTI MUSLIM FILM PROTEST Spreading to AUSTRALIA: "Obama, Obama, we like Osama"

Demonstrators angry over an anti-Islam film clashed with police in Australia, but downtown Cairo, scene of the first protests, and most of the Muslim world appeared to be largely calm Saturday evening. Egyptian security forces earlier Saturday pushed protesters away from the US Embassy toward Tahrir Square, where they were further dispersed. Hundreds of Egyptian riot police remained in the square as workers cleaned streets and businesses and assessed damage from five days of protests. The protest in Sydney came as the United States strengthened security at diplomatic stations amid the unrest, which marked its fifth day. Carrying signs that read: "Obama, Obama, we like Osama" and "Behead All Those Who Insult the Prophet," hundreds of protesters gathered on the steps of the consulate in Sydney. The demonstration turned violent after protesters were pushed back from the building. Authorities used tear gas and police dogs to disperse protesters who threw bottles and shoes -- considered a grave insult among Muslims. Six police officers were injured and eight people were arrested, Sydney police said. Seventeen people were treated for the effects of pepper spray used by police. Related article

The first day of the UN General Assembly in New York was quite predictably marked by a boiling over of tension between Iran and Israel. Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad used his speech at the gathering to denounce Israel's alleged nuclear stockpiles and its occupation of Palestine. The Iranian president's address to leaders and ministers from over 100 countries prompted Israel's ambassador to walk out. Ahmadinejad also implicitly accused the US of shielding Israel and paving the way for a strike on Tehran. This comes just days after Washington decided to remove an Iranian militant group, the MEK off its terror blacklist. Jamal Abdi, the Policy Director of the National Iranian American Council, believes the sudden change of heart over an organization striving to overthrow the Iranian regime, is no coincidence. Japanese coastguard vessels - armed with loudspeakers and fire hoses - closed in on a Taiwanese fishing fleet of some 60 boats as it neared the disputed East China Sea islands known as Senkaku in Japan and Diaoyu in China. Heavy seas made contact between hostile crews seem inevitable, but strong winds dissipated much of the water cannon jet before it could take effect on the bare decks of the little fishing boats. Nepal avalanche: search for 7 missing climbers

A search operation has resumed in Nepal for at least seven climbers missing on Mount Manaslu, where an avalanche killed at least nine others on Sunday. Poor weather had forced the suspension of earlier rescue efforts on the Himalayan peak. Rescuers brought the bodies of six people, who died in an avalanche on a mountain in Nepal back to Kathmandu. The bodies wrapped in sleeping bags were placed in the morgue of the Kathmandu Teaching Hospital. Seven French climbers were among the 11 victims of the avalanche that struck their camp on Mount Manaslu, the world's eighth-highest mountain at 26781 feet. Two German climbers and one each from Spain and Nepal also died. Two Italian climbers, who survived the avalanche, were airlifted from a Himalayan mountain and brought to Kathmandu. They walked from the rescue helicopter, but they declined to speak to the waiting press. Police said the group was camped near the summit, when it was hit by a wall of snow in the early hours of Sunday. And there are fears that the death toll will rise considerably, as the rescue teams move in with unconfirmed reports that as many as 38 people are reported missing. Syrian opposition has met in Doha to discuss formation of a transitional government predicated on the overthrow of the Assad regime. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on July 28, "Our Western partners... together with some of Syria's neighbors are essentially encouraging, supporting and directing an armed struggle against [the Syrian government]." On Wednesday, the first diplomatic blunder occurred in the London Olympics games when the South Korean flag rather than the North Korean flag was shown before women's football match. Meanwhile, the UK economy is in worsening recession. The economy is now smaller than it was when the Tory-Lib Dem coalition came into power in 2010. The Bank of England is going to print more notes probably up to 500 billion pounds more in an effort to stimulate growth. If you can suffer, you can gain. What is valuable can not be obtained without effort. Don't depend on assistance (without strings attached) from here to there. (Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, 1991 Nobel Peace Prize Laureate) "Democracy belongs to the nation as a whole and its not up to one individual/ one commision to make it happen... Whatever injustices there may be, we have to stand up against them in whatever way we can... We need to come together as a nation... united in harmony" (Translated by a youtube user xenovia. Thanks.)
