Hiking Backpacking Gear Whats in our packs
Odor Proof (bear) Bags - astore.amazon.com GSI Gear - astore.amazon.com ENO Hammocks - astore.amazon.com Preparing for any hiking or backpacking trip can sometimes be overwhelming. Attempting to go ultra light hiking can be even worse. We've learned thru several hikes on the AT, Appalachian Trail, and various hiking trails in Florida that less is better. There is a tendency for those new to hiking and backpacking to over pack. That's why it's not uncommon to come across gear abandoned on the trail by hikers that realized carrying the extra weight wasn't worth it. In this video we show how our pack out has evolved thru our own experiences by showing and going through what's in our packs. Some of the gear we take includes GSI cook sets, ENO hammocks and tarps, home made under quiltsMSR Pocket Rocket, alcohol stoves, and bear bags or odor proof bags for the bear hang. www.youtube.com

"Katadyn Hiker: Water Fresh" by Nutnfancy
At around 14 ounces, the Katadyn Hiker and Hiker Pro water filters are not light. But they are the best and most capable backcountry filters I have found and used. My experience with them dates back to the early 1990s (discussed) when they were sold under the PUR brand. These Katadyn versions are still well made and have the same proven capabilities. The video discusses and clearly show these in depth through many TNP backpacking adventures. The Hiker Pro offers a wrap around filter pre-screen and QD attachments. The latter I don't need but the filter screen is recommended as is wise selected of your source water. In good conditions these Hikers are rated at 200 gallons filtering capacity. They have seemed to provide that in my experience. Other competitive options are available and capable such as the MSR Mini Waterworks or Sweet Water, Katadyn Mini, Katadyn Pocket, Katadyn Vario, and many other low cost, "hokey" alternatives. Hokey to me means more work, less production, inability to reach water sources, hard pumping or requiring squeezing/sucking through a straw, and the worst, frequent clogging. The Hiker is none of those things and its design defines durability and ease of use. If you can pack it in you'll be glad you brought it. It's the world's best selling hiking filter for good reason.///////////////////////Nutnfancy Likability Scale: 9 out of 10 (only penalty is WEIGHT)

The Hike
Kate (Zara Phythian) is a soldier back from a tour in Afghanistan on compassionate leave after seeing her soldier boyfriend die in combat. Back among her best friends, they take the chance to get away and go on a camping trip in a picturesque and remote area of the British countryside. As the girls leave for their expedition, Kate's friend, Torri (Barbara Nedeljacova) breaks up with her aggressive boyfriend Dean (Tamer Hassan), leaving Kate to defend her from his violence. Leaving all that behind, the girls make their way into the woods in search of the perfect place to camp and enjoy their time together. As they near Sunset Point they come across a strange and evasive group of Eastern Europeans that seem to be living off the land. It's a awkward situation and the Kate and her group quickly move on. As the girls reach Sunset Point they encounter three rock climbers, lead by Ethan (Ben Loyd Holmes), and much to her annoyance Kate's friends quickly become friendly with the likely lads. As the two groups go their separate ways, Kate is relieved to have the girls to herself, but as darkness falls and Charlie (Jemma Bolt) goes missing they begin to feel vulnerable and will be forced to rely on each other and their newly formed friendships with the climbers to find Charlie and get them out of the woods to safety. - Copyright The Hike Film Ltd © 2011. APPALACHIAN TRAIL Thru Hikers (TRAILER)
Every year a handful of people young and old from anywhere in the world strike out to thru hike the entire 2182 mile Appalachian Trail. This documentary takes account of their story, and opinions nearly halfway through their journey. It poses thought provoking questions, and uncovers just a little bit about what it is like to be an Appalachian Trail Thru Hiker. The film is still in production, and since it is my first film I have no idea where it will go, but it is one of many projects that I have wanted to do for a long time in relation to the Appalachian Trail. www.facebook.com Name of the song: Years Name of the artist: Jaddams Direct link to the song: www.jamendo.com

This was filmed between 4th and 11th April 2011. I had the pleasure of visiting El Teide.
Spain´s highest mountain @(3718m) is one of the best places in the world to photograph the stars and is also the location of Teide Observatories, considered to be one of the world´s best observatories.
The goal was to capture the beautiful Milky Way galaxy along with one of the most amazing mountains I know El Teide. I have to say this was one of the most exhausting trips I have done. There was a lot of hiking at high altitudes and probably less than 10 hours of sleep in total for the whole week. Having been here 10-11 times before I had a long list of must-see locations I wanted to capture for this movie, but I am still not 100% used to carrying around so much gear required for time-lapse movies.
A large sandstorm hit the Sahara Desert on the 9th April (http://bit.ly/g3tsDW) and at approx 3am in the night the sandstorm hit me, making it nearly impossible to see the sky with my own eyes.
Interestingly enough my camera was set for a 5 hour sequence of the milky way during this time and I was sure my whole scene was ruined. To my surprise, my camera had managed to capture the sandstorm which was backlit by Grand Canary Island making it look like golden clouds. The Milky Way was shining through the clouds, making the stars sparkle in an interesting way. So if you ever wondered how the Milky Way would look through a Sahara sandstorm, look at 00:32.

PLEASE WATCH IN HD FULL SCREEN w/SOUND. It is a much better viewing experience. Hopefully you have a 1080P monitor and good connection. If not, bug a friend or colleague that does. It is worth it.
Landscapes: Volume 2 is the second of a three part series. Every frame of this video is a raw still from a Canon 5D2 DSLR and processed with Adobe software. In Volume 2 I again show off my beautiful home state of Arizona and I also made several trips to Utah. This video has some iconic landmarks that we have seen before. I felt that showing them again with motion controlled HDR and/or night timelapse would be a new way to see old landmarks.
Sales Pitch: I would now have to say that my timelapse skill set is very complete. The amount of knowledge I have gained through research, testing, and shooting experience is astounding. From moon phases to high dynamic range to motion control rigs to noise reduction, you would have a tough time finding someone with more overall knowledge of timelapse. If you need help with your next timelapse project you can reach me at 888-444-2739 or DustinF@crewwestinc.com
Most of the motion control for this video was done with the Stage Zero Dolly by Dynamic Perception. Once I got comfortable using the DP dolly I fell in love. I can set up shots now in much shorter times. More importantly for me, it is much smaller and much more portable than my homemade motion control. Without it, shots like the Delicate Arch shot in Utah would be nearly impossible due to the length of the hike. Buy the Stage Zero Dolly if you are looking for quality, inexpensive, easy-to-use motion control. http://dynamicperception.com/
In addition to the Stage Zero, I also used a three axis motion controlled CamTram. The CamTram is the most versatile dolly I have ever used. Its applications are only limited by your creativity. The CamTram has virtually no weight limit. I was able to achieve shots that dolly-in with the camera just over the ground because of the CamTram's ability to hold heavy counter weights.

I was asked to go to Basilicata, Italy to participate in a Digital Diary contest for the tourism board to show one of the most untouched parts of Italy... It was a rushed week, and I had to make two videos. I had two days to put this one together, so I apologize about the little knicks here and there, hehe.
It won the Grand Prize at the competition, and I am still in shock about the whole thing. It really was like a dream!

Hiker Taking Photos is Killed by Grizzly Bear.
Sadly, just days ago a hiker was killed by a Grizzly Bear at Denali National Park in Alaska. It is the parks first death by bear since officially becoming a safe haven for wildlife in 1917. The bear had to be put down for public safety since it now was a man eater. Rangers found the tourist camera and determined he spent over 8 minutes near the bear at a range of 50 yards. Park rules at Denali ask you to be 300 yards to 1/4 mile away from bears and at Yellowstone they state 100 yards. Ask anyone who visits or works at these parks and they will tell you they see people brake those rules daily for bear, moose, elk and other wildlife. Do people think they can out run a 30mph charging bear? Do they think they will get that perfect picture, not knowing the footage they watch on nature shows are taken with huge lenses, and sometimes even staged with captive animals? Please enjoy nature, but be careful out there. For yourself, for the wildlife, and for everyone else that plans on visiting these amazing areas. Thanks.
