Koolism - 2004 Aria Award winners
Brothers Koolism win the 2004 Aria Award (Australia's premier music award) for Best Urban Release for the album 'Part 3 - Random Thoughts'. This was the first proper hip hop outfit in the country to gain this level of industry recognition, paving the way for many others since. Check out Dan's memorable acceptance speech where he managed to temporarily upset guest presenters, the Black Eyed Peas. Gwaan bad man!!!

V&A; Annual Design Lecture - Marc Newson in conversation with Professor Sir Christopher Frayling
PROFESSOR SIR CHRISTOPHER FRAYLING: Marc Newson's work as a designer has touched and indeed touches the V&A; at many points. Design art, postmodernism, one-off pieces that tell tales, Milan in a Van, even Cold-War modern, in that Mark has a love of the sets of Ken Adam for James Bond and Dr Strangelove, something we share, and indeed for the spaceships of 2001.
The chairs we're going to be sitting on for this conversation are in fact Mark's chairs for the Qantas first-class lounge, made in Italy. And a big Manhattan collector of his work has said that the thing about his chairs is that not only they are beautiful and comfortable but they make you feel horny as well.Well time will tell ladies and gentlemen, I'll let you know in 50 minutes. And talking of time, Time Magazine recently named him in one of those lists, one of the hundred most influential people in the world. Not designers, people.
Will you please give a very warm welcome to Marc Newson.
You've designed right across the spectrum, coat hangers to jet aircraft...
MARC NEWSON: Yeah
C F: We are going to see both…
What's your line on specialists versus generalists, you know there's one faction that says you should train, you know furniture designer and that's what you do for the rest of your life but you haven't done that, you've moved into all sorts of different areas. What do you feel about that?
M N: Well to begin with I never trained really… in a particularly specific way. I went to art school and I …decided to concentrate on jewellery. But I concentrated more on making jewellery rather than on designing jewellery. So … and as you have pointed out I've drifted across a very, very broad range, I mean I think just about as broad as you could possibly be. I mean there are not many things that I haven't tried to kind of address. Not because I want to address or not because I want to tick all of those boxes but because I think as a designer you…really the metier is the same. And you know you're dealing with different materials, you're dealing with different …different scale obviously, that's a big differentiator. Different processes, different materials, different techniques, but, but really that's for me that's what design is all about. It's being able to kind of you know learn from one area and… and sort of cross pollinate. Take the expertise that you've picked up from say designing a sneaker and apply it to let's say the luggage industry.
C F: And would you say that drawing is at the root of everything? Cause you're famous for manically sketching all the time, ideas, anything that comes into your head. Is that the root it? Whatever you're doing?
M N: Well, I'm… I'm more comfortable certainly drawing than I am working on a computer, let's put it that way. You know I find that you know I'm very much a kind of, you know, I work in a pre-digital way. But my sketches are not the typical kind of designer sketches. You know again I didn't learn how to draw with sort of, you know, wonderful big sort of Pantone,… you know Pantone pens and things, you know my sketches are like thumbnail sketches that I draw with you know with a fountain pen. And my drawing book is like a diary of ideas, so. But it's really just a means to an end and it's a way of recording ideas, it's not, you know I don't chase ideas.
C F: Yeah, yeah.
The other big issue in design today is this in house versus consultant that… you know most of my students at the…at the Royal College hope as was had the ambition to set up on their own as consultants and sell their services across the piece. And the idea of working in-house for a company is very unsexy, you know for better or worse. And people like James Dyson would have said it's more fun than it looks…
M N: …Unless you're Johnny Ive
C F: Yes, well exactly, Johnny Ive for Apple is a very good example.
What do you feel about it well in fact you've done both?
Well, in fact you've worked for yourself, you've worked for companies like Alessi and Qantas, I mean and you've worked on commission. You've done all of them. What's your take on that?
M N: I've worked for big companies in a slightly different capacity, always as a consultant, so I've always managed to maintain my own you know sort of autonomous…ness, I guess, and…and so interestingly a lot of large organisations engage me when they have their own design team. And they find it somehow necessary that someone from outside the design, from outside of their design world can come and…and try to solve their design issues in a slightly different way, you know look at it from a different perspective. So…I'm not sure if I'd say one is kind of better than the other, I know what I'd rather be doing. I've never worked for anybody, you know on a…on a salaried basis, so I don't think I could ever do that.
C F: But when you're doing Qantas say, say you're doing the interior of this, you know, huge passenger aircraft. You know there's health and safety,

4ZZZ-FM is an independent, community radio station operating in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. 4ZZZ started a revolution in Australian radio by pioneering a new breed of community-based radio stations nationwide. 4ZZZ was the first to broadcast in both FM and stereo in Queensland, and the first FM stereo rock music station in Australia. The radio station was instrumental in promoting contemporary Australian music by showcasing Australian artists with long lasting and ongoing effect.
4ZZZ-FM was the first Community FM broadcaster in Australia to take advantage of an initiative to extend radio broadcasting by the Whitlam Federal Government. After Whitlam and the Labor Party gained power in 1972, they introduced a wave of reformist legislation including proposed reforms to broadcasting. At the time, Australia had the second highest concentration of media ownership in the western world.
In 1971, political activists at the University of Queensland were in serious discussion about setting up an illegal "pirate" radio station in Brisbane. This discussion came as a direct result of the National Party-dominated State Government's disreputable political maneuvering, and the media's one-sided and manipulative reporting of events during the 1971 South African Springbok national rugby union tour while in Brisbane. The idea of a "pirate" radio station was simply to allow other points of view to be heard in an otherwise repressive and anti-democratic atmosphere. The first meeting to explore the idea of using radio was on 14 July 1971, the very day a State of Emergency was declared in Queensland designed specifically to control demonstrations against the South Africa’s apartheid system during the Springbok tour. See film and information here: http://vimeo.com/22916729
A Brisbane activist, Jim Beatson, had lived in the UK in the late 1960s. There he witnessed first-hand how FM was transforming radio in Europe. Upon his return to Brisbane, Jim became aware of a move to promote community radio in Sydney, so he climbed onboard the slowly moving juggernaut of broadcasting reform and was eventually appointed to an Australian Government working party on public/community broadcasting.
Early on, Jim recognized an opportunity to "go up the right channels" in an endeavour to set up a radio station legally. He convince others of his approach, since a "pirate" radio station was likely to be short lived, and the consequences for breaking the law could be severe with heavy penalties. Lobbying for a legitimate broadcasting licence was generally considered the more desirable path to take, although it was realized that it would be much more difficult and time consuming to implement. The planning phase took three years without any guarantee of success. On the contrary, everything was stacked again this project ever succeeding.
The attraction of radio as a medium was that it was under Federal control, and not State Government control. So in theory at least, the State Government would have limited power to meddle in the new venture. Further protection might be provided by physically locating the radio station on the University of Queensland campus, where unexpected police raids, and similar police activity, was less likely. Radio was also a relatively affordable medium in financial terms.
As the thinking shifted away from the idea of a pirate radio station, the then editor of the student newspaper in 1973, Alan Knight, set about establishing a Student Union Media Committee with a focus on radio. Alan called an inaugural meeting on the University of Queensland campus based on the idea that a collective could establish its own radio station. Just three people attended the first meeting in the Semper Floreat offices, Jim Beatson, Alan Knight and Ross Dannecker. Subsequently, a loose alliance of people interested in music, information, politics, and technology slowly joined forces. The group also became aligned with the commercial manufacturers and retailers of stereo equipment that were also pushing for the introduction of FM.
Australia was slow to move to FM at first, and the Government thought it might just be a passing fad. Supporters had to lobby against an industry proposal to locate FM in the UHF band instead of the internationally accepted VHF band. UHF receivers would have been prohibitively expensive for Brisbane’s intended audience.
Those diverse interest groups meeting in Brisban

He lives in Capalaba, a southside suburb of Brisbane. He is married and has three children, with his eldest son now studying law at Griffith University. Kevin is a former Queensland public sector trade union organiser who now works as a freelance political cartoonist/caricaturist/illustrator while he continues his quest for justice in the Heiner Affair.
He previously pursued a career as a musical comedy/opera baritone singer in Brisbane, Sydney and London. In Brisbane he performed with the Queensland Light Opera Company. In Sydney he played the leading roles in Oklahoma and The Sentimental Bloke, and, inter alia, performed with the London Philharmonia Chorus under Maestro Ricardo Muti in London's Southbank. He takes a great interest in criminal, administrative and constitutional law, recordkeeping, pioneer aviators, classical music and current affairs, and was, for a time in the early 70s, a public forum speaker on the Sydney Domain.
During his time in London, having previously unveiled a plaque on famous aviator Bert Hinkler's Southampton home in June 1974 -- by the request of pioneer aviation historian and friend Mr Ted Wixted of the Queensland Museum, with the aid of the University of Southampton and Queensland's Agent-General -- he later carried out a one-man campaign for several years to prevent its threatened demolition by the Southampton City Council to make way for a block of flats. His campaign forestalled its demolition. It allowed a specialist Bundaberg team, as part Australia's 1988 Bicentennial Celebrations, to later transport the house back to Bundaberg around 1981 (after dismantling it brick by brick, wooden plank by plank, and then rebuilding it), to be a unique Australian museum open by Premier Sir Joh Bjelke-Peterson in June 1984. Kevin attended having returned to Australia. With the aid of a $7million government-grant, the Hinkler Musuem was greatly extended and opened in December 2008. Kevin also attended this ceremony.
In 1974, he organised a ceremony in Italy to present medallions to the Italians who found and removed Hinkler's body from Mount Pratomagno near Florence in Tuscany in 1933. Kevin was greatly assisted by the Arezzo Aero Club President, Prince Amedeo di Savioa, Duke of Aosta, the present head of the Italian Royal Family. The medallions were presented by the Australian Ambassador to Italy, His Excellency, the Hon John Ryan.
In 1990, Kevin was a senior organiser with the Queensland public service trade union, the Queensland Professional Officers' Association (QPOA). Its members were professional and technical Queensland public servants and TAFE teachers. This job took him into the corridors of power of the Queensland Government. He challenged the Goss Queensland Government's shredding of the Heiner Inquiry documents in February/March 1990 and was dismissed in May 1990, one reason being his handling of 'the Coyne case'. He fought back. He took his public interest disclosure to the Criminal Justice Commission in 1990. This whistleblowing episode on the shredding has been categorised as one of Australia's five most important cases by Whistleblowers Australia. The Heiner Affair is now the subject of lectures in universities throughout Australia and globally, and was recommended by Queensland Education in 2009 to be studied as an OP/HSC topic by Years 11 and 12 students in all Queensland secondary schools. In May 2004 it also featured in the ABC's Australian Story "Three Little Words" (a.k.a. They've been shredded). In February 1999, it featured on Channel 9's Sunday, as "Queensland's Secret Shame."
It now features in at least four academic books published in Australia and the United States. It has been categorised by the international archives community in 2001 as one of the 20th century's 14 great shredding scandals in the world. It has been publicly categorised by the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority ("APRA") as a "high profile corruption scandal" standing alongside Enron/Arthur Anderson, HIH and McCabe. In late 2009, Kevin was commissioned by the Records Management Association of Australasia to write a major article on the Heiner Affair focussing on the extraordinary role of the Queensland State Archivist in the Affair and because of its relevance to modern 21st century records management in government and private enterprise. This article is due to be published around the end of February 2010, and shall be available via the internet.
The Heiner Affair, also known as "Shreddergate", already enjoys significant coverage on the internet. It was regularly and courageously reported on by the University of Queensland School of Journalism's student newspaper "The Weekend Independent" and "The Independent Monthly" by editor and lecturer Associate Professor Bruce G

Colourist Music Video: Empire of the Sun 'Walking On A Dream'
I was lucky enough to colour grade this clip. I'd worked with Josh, the director, before and it's always a very fun session.
The brief was: colourful. Turning wide shots of smoggy Shanghai into a Wizard of Oz colour palette was challenging but I think the result looks fantastic!
This clip won a Australian Recording Industry Association Music Award (ARIA) for best music video!

Spice Girls Say You'll Be There lyrics
4u 2c only for learning ..."Say You'll Be There" is a song by British pop group Spice Girls. It was written by the Spice Girls and Eliot Kennedy, for their debut album Spice, released in November 1996. Production duo Absolute incorporated a mix of pop and R&B into the song, which includes an harmonica solo, played by Judd Lander. The lyrics—which described the things the group have been through together and how they always have been there for each other—received mixed reviews from critics, who described them as "confusing" and felt that the R&B-infused production was a "bid for street cred". The music video was inspired by the films Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill! and Pulp Fiction, and features the group as a band of female techno-warriors, who use martial arts and high-tech ninja influenced weapons to capture a hapless male. It includes symbols of male disempowerment, and serves as an example of solidarity and the group's bonding. It received positive reactions from fans and was nominated for numerous awards including the 1996 Smash Hits! Awards, the 1997 MTV Video Music Awards, and the 1997 BRIT Awards. Released as the album's second single in October 1996, it became their second number-one single in the United Kingdom, and was certified platinum by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI). It was a commercial success across Europe, reaching the top ten in most of the charts that it entered. As a result of its popularity, the song was released in 1997 in Australia ...

DJ Havana Brown @ RedOne's Studio @ Hollywood - Interview with Simo Benbachir
Simo Benbachir's interview with Havana Brown @ RedOne's Hollywood Studio... Havana Brown or DJ Havana Brown (born Angelique Meunier; 14 February 1985) is an Australian DJ, singer and dancer. In 2008, Brown signed with Island Records Australia as a DJ for the record company, and began releasing her Crave compilation album series, which featured remixes of songs from other artists. This led to her touring with international artists, including Britney Spears, Rihanna, the Pussycat Dolls, Chris Brown and Enrique Iglesias. Brown made her debut as a recording artist in 2011, with the single "We Run the Night", which reached number five on the Australian ARIA Singles Chart and was certified triple platinum by the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA). The single earned Brown two ARIA Music Award nominations for Breakthrough Artist Single and Highest Selling Single. Following this success, Brown signed a US record deal with Universal Republic via producer RedOne's label 2101 Records. A remix of "We Run the Night", featuring American rapper Pitbull, was produced by RedOne and released in the United States. It reached number one on the US Hot Dance Club Songs chart and number 26 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart. The remix was included on Brown's first EP, When the Lights Go Out, which was released in July 2012. Brown claimed Janet Jackson as her biggest influence, stating "she's my idol" and "I want to be Janet Jackson! But the DJ-slash-Janet Jackson—I want to be able ...
