Our Love is Here to Stay by George & Ira Gershwin
Our Love is Here to Stay [1937] by George Gershwin, lyrics by Ira Gershwin. Musical arrangement by Gary Chapman. Photos of New York City, March 2009, by Paul Whiton. But oh, my dear ... Richard Lalli, Baritone Gary Chapman, Piano The more I read the papers, the less I comprehend, The world and all its capers and how it all will end. Nothing seems to be lasting, but that isn't our affair, We've got something permanent, I mean in the way we care. It's very clear, our love is here to stay. Not for a year, but ever and a day. The radio and the telephone, And the movies that we know, May just be passing fancies and in time may go. But oh, my dear, our love is here to stay, Together we're going a long, long way. In time the Rockies may crumble, Gibraltar may tumble, they're only made of clay. But our love is here to stay.

I've Got Rhythm: Tribute to William Robinson
Ella Fitzgerald sings I've Got Rhythm. Bill "Bojangles" Robinson (May 25, 1878 -- November 25, 1949) was an American tap dancer and actor of stage and film. Audiences enjoyed his understated style, which eschewed the frenetic manner of the jitterbug in favor of cool and reserve; rarely did he use his upper body, relying instead on busy, inventive feet and an expressive face. A figure in both the black and white entertainment worlds of his era, he is best known today for his dancing with Shirley Temple in a series of films during the 1930s. At the age of six, Robinson began dancing for a living, appearing as a "hoofer" or busker in local beer gardens. He soon dropped out of school to pursue dancing as a career. In 1886, he joined Mayme Remington's troupe in Washington, DC, and toured with them. In 1891, at the age of 12, he joined a traveling company in The South Before the War, and in 1905 worked with George Cooper as a vaudeville team. He gained great success as a nightclub and musical comedy performer, and during the next 25 years became one of the toasts of Broadway. Not until he was 50 did he dance for white audiences, having devoted his early career exclusively to appearances on the black theater circuit. In 1908, in Chicago, he met Marty Forkins, who became his lifelong manager. Under Forkins' tutelage, Robinson matured and began working as a solo act in nightclubs, increasing his earnings to an estimated $3500 per week. In 1928, he starred with Adelaide Hall on ...

PETER MINTUN: Mine (George Gershwin-Ira Gershwin) 1933
"Mine" was the only popular song to come out of the Gershwin show 'Let 'Em Eat Cake.' It has two melodies that are meant to be sung as a duet. The first pair to record the song was Bob Lawrence and Ramona, with the Paul Whiteman Orchestra. I have also provided a short demonstration of the sostenuto pedal, which allows you to control the damper on a single note so you can add a sustained obbligato if wanted.

The man I love, George and Ira Gershwin
Lady Balladyna is an internationally known night club singer based in Amsterdam. Her sultry, elegant style is reminiscent of the Femme Fatales in a film noir movie.
Her stylish and entertaining performances seduce the audience into the time of Hollywood’s golden age or Paris’ Moulin Rouge.
She can perform in different settings from jazz lounges to elegant galas and corporate events.

"An American In Paris" Ballet with George Gershwin's Original Music
What if Gene Kelly had danced to George Gershwin's original score instead of Saul Chaplin's version? Why did Kelly ask for changes? Why did Ira Gershwin allow it? Would George have agreed? Why were 6 minutes cut when over 5 minutes of new music was added?
This is simply an educational exercise to see how the ballet would have played to the original score, and to show how it was altered. To see the original, please buy or rent the DVD.
Ira Gershwin insisted that all of the songs in the film "An American In Paris" come from the Gershwin songbook. But not the music for the famous ballet. Saul Chaplin reorchestrated, rearranged, and edited Gershwin's piece, and added music.
That's always bothered me, so I replaced most of the film's score with Gershwin's original "An American In Paris" as played by the New York Philharmonic.
I've paused the film where music was cut, and kept some music that was added (at the beginning and in the middle). I've labeled any section that contains new music. Sections that are not labeled are Gershwin's music, but on the film soundtrack, they are often altered.
The section beginning at 5:30 was moved towards the end of the film ballet - I've moved it up. Finally, I was forced to use the film soundtrack for about 5 minutes beginning at 8:15, since so much of that music is not in the concert version.
Chaplin won an Oscar for his scoring of the film, so the Academy did not share my concerns about his alterations.
From someone who spoke to Saul Chaplin about this:
"Chaplin insisted that every note of the ballet is Gershwin. Ira Gershwin provided Chaplin with George's original musical sketches, which included passages Gershwin discarded. Chaplin adapted them for the middle section and tried as much as possible not to stray from Gershwin's original orchestration.
Nevertheless, he was distressed about his part in adapting the ballet, which he did out of necessity, not pleasure. He considered Gershwin one of America's greatest composers and never allowed this version to be recorded or played anywhere except on the soundtrack of the picture."
(To my ear, much of the film soundtrack sounds like it has been reorchestrated. Having never seen George's original sketches, it's not possible to verify if "every note" is Gershwin. It's certainly not the piece as he published it. The adapted version is available on the Rhino two-disc soundtrack CD, so it appears Chaplin's wishes were not honored.)

I Got Rhythm-George & Ira Gershwin-Greg Tibbits on Alto Sax w. Music Minus One
It's been gushing rain and in Southern California that is something happening. It put enough rhythm into my soul to get me off my rear nd go out and take some pictures of the strange moistness coming out of the sky. Thus the up-beat soundtrack of me doing the great jazz standard, I Got Rhythm, whose chord changes remind me of those Charlie "Bird" Parker used as a format for "Moose The Mooche." THEY ARE THE INVENTORS OF THE WORLD'S FIRST HIGH DEFINITION RECORDERS. My Ship - (Ira Gershwin and Kurt Weill) - jazz piano lesson
My Ship - (Ira Gershwin and Kurt Weill) - jazz piano lesson This is a wonderful - but under played standard. Music is by Kurt Weill. It has lots of opportunities for re-harmonisation. The leadsheet I used is in Sher Music's 'New Real Book Volume 2' p.235 This was a solo piano midi file that I produced some time ago - and had annotated it with quite a few comments. Just to see what would happen, I imported it into Band in a box, and had it produce a bass and drums backing using their Real Tracks option. There is just a little conflict between my left hand and the bass player. I have put the original solo version - without bass and drums backing - on my website as both an audio and midi file. This video is available - free to download - at www.bushgrafts.com The transcription is on my DVD - details on my website.

DELISHIOUS (George & Ira Gershwin)
The "Bratislava Hot Serenaders". Listening and looking to this Orchestra is like coming into a time capsule: everything is vintage, songs, arrangements, solos, instruments, look. But they are so original, not a copy...they ARE a Band of the 20s/30s! Sorry for the poor sound quality, produced by the camera position and by its self-setting microphone.
