History versus Purana
From the works of Living Enlightened Master Paramahamsa Nithyananda. In this clip taken from the discourses titled, "The Power of no Judging & Detach Naturally", Swamiji clearly describes the differences between history and Puranas. History is based on depiction in three dimensions -- Length, breath and depth whereas Puranas describe an additional two dimension, the dimensions of space and time also. This is why historians cannot understand puranas. Puranas are the visual representation of what has happened beyond length, breath and depth. This is why historians always question evry aspect of puranas. In his characteristic ways, Swamiji teaches us that History = Fact (mainly distorted), Puranas = Fact + Truth. Bhavisya Purana and the "Prophet" -"Maha-mada"-reincarnated demon Tripura
From Kartik Prabhu's notes, we learn that the central shrine of Islam is the Kabba, which is a cube-shaped, one-room stone structure in Mecca, Saudi Arabia. In pre-Muslim Arabia it already attracted pilgrims as the most important sanctuary. The traditional belief is that it was built by Abraham and Ishmael (to whom the Arabs trace their descent). This is confirmed in the Qur'an (Koran). A black stone is worshiped in the shrine. This kaaba stone is also called as Sange-Aswad, which is corruption of Sanskrit linga-asveta which literally means the Black (asveta=not white) Shiva Linga. Near this shrine there is a sacred well called Zamzam, a name that sounds remarkably like "ganga. " The Zamzam well was holy even before the rise of Islam in Arabia, and it remains holy to the Muslims. It appears that Bhoja Raja bathed the Shivalinga with water from this well, which is non-different from the Ganges. That a well far from the Ganges river yields Ganges water is not remarkable. There is such a well at Ramesvaram in South India. For persons in darkness and ignorance, Mahadeva Lord Shiva is God. He is known as Bhutanatha, the lord of ghostly entities like pishachas, yakshas, and rakshashas. And he is the lord of destruction. Direct or indirect worship of Shiva is seen in many guises all around the world. His linga (symbol) is a type of stone. Ganga-devi lives in his matted locks; thus wherever Shiva appears, the water of the Ganges appears also. =========================== At that ...

Red Ice Radio - 4.12.2011 - Hollow Earth in the Puranas & Polar Expeditions
Dean Dominic De Lucia - Hour 1 - Hollow Earth in the Puranas & Polar Expeditions December 4, 2011 From São Paulo, Brazil, Dean Dominic De Lucia discusses his book: "Hollow Earth in the Puranas." De Lucia was born in Bethesda, Maryland. He studied Business Administration at the University of Baltimore, and later on completed a two-year course in translating at the Catholic University in São Paulo. He has maintained a life-long interest in Indian Hindu philosophy and spiritual practices, which ultimately led him to take up Vedic astrology. He began his studies in 1981 under Nalini Kanta Das or "Tom Hopke", and has been a student and practitioner of the art ever since. His articles were published in two Bangalore magazines, "The Astrological Magazine" and "Modern Astrology." Dean has also written a book called "Astrologia Vedica". We'll discuss Hindu traditions, specifically, the Vedas and the Puranas as Dean has found accounts and stories in the Vedic scriptures related to "The Hollow Earth" and "The Ancient Ones", the demigods or the giants that are alleged to inhabit our inner Earth. Dean will talk about the present day search for the openings to the hollow Earth as well as older accounts and expeditions to the Antarctic and Arctic Circle. Most are familiar with Admiral Byrd's claim of exploring the inner Earth but there are others, of which involved Norwegian explorers, such as Olaf Jansen's Story, also known as "The Smokey God - A Voyage to the Inner World" and Fridtjof ...

Sri Venkatesha Mahatyam - The Aditya Purana (Sanskrit Spiritual Work)
Sri Venkatachala Mahatmya is referred to in several Puranas, of which the most important are the Aditya Purana Varaha Purana and the Bhavishyottara Purana. This work contains extracts from the Aditya Purana. Most of these extracts describe the sanctity and antiquity of the hills around Tirumala and the numerous teerthams situated on them. The legends taken from the Venkatachala Mahatmya and the Varaha Purana, pertaining to the manifestation of the Lord at Tirumala, are of particular interest. According to the Varaha Purana, Adi Varaha manifested Himself on the western bank of the Swami Pushkarini, while Vishnu in the form of Venkateswara came to reside on the southern bank of the Swami Pushkarini. One day, Rangadasa, a staunch devotee of Vishnu, in the course of his pilgrimage, joined Vaikhanasa Gopinatha, who was going up the Tirumala Hill for the daily worship of Lord Venkateswara. After bathing in the Swami Pushkarini, he beheld the lotus-eyed and blue-bodied Vishnu beneath a tamarind tree. Vishnu was exposed to the sun, wind and rain and was only protected by the extended wings of Garuda. Rangadasa was astounded by the wonderful sight. He raised a rough wall of stones around the deity, and started supplying flowers faithfully to Gopinatha everyday for Vishnu's worship. One day, Rangadasa was distracted by a Gandharva king and his ladies. Consequently, he forgot to supply flowers to Gopinatha for Vishnu's worship. The Lord then revealed Himself and told Rangadasa that ...

Puranas as Origins of Kathak from Doordarshan Archives-25-1-2008
Happy Birthday To Atalji on his 2008 Birthday-25-1-2008 The name Kathak is derived from the Sanskrit word katha meaning story, and katthaka in Sanskrit means s/he who tells a story, or to do with stories. The name of the form is properly katthak, with the geminated dental to show a derived form, but this has since simplified to modern-day kathak. kathaa kahe so kathak is a saying many teachers pass on to their pupils, which is generally translated, 's/he who tells a story, is a kathak', but which can also be translated, 'that which tells a story, that is Kathak'. The story of Kathak begins in ancient times with the performances of professional story-tellers called kathakas who recited or sang stories from epics and mythology with some elements of dance. The traditions of the kathakas were hereditary, and dances passed from generation to generation. There are literary references from the third and fourth centuries BC which refer to these kathakas. The two texts are in the archives of Kameshwar Library at Mithila. An extract runs as follows: maggasirasuddhapakkhe nakkhhate varanaseeye nayareeye uttarpuratthime diseebhage gangaye mahanadeeye tate savvokathako bhingarnatenam teese stuti kayam yehi raya adinaho bhavenam passayi (Prakrit text, 4th century BC). Translation: in the month of magha, in the shukla-paksha nakshatra, to the north west of Varanasi, on the banks of the Ganges, the shringar dance of the kathaks in praise of God pleased Lord Adinatha. A 3rd century BC ...

Adrian Fisk 2010
Adrian Fisk's photographs are of a city caught between a dream and a nightmare. The images in Dilli Purana Dilli Naya (Delhi Old / Delhi New) are experimental in nature; spur of the moment photographs made with a $200 film camera.
Delhi celebrates its 100th anniversary as the capital of India this 2011. The images in this series were made during 2009 and 2010. This is a 360 degree view of Fisk’s life in the Capital, an intimate portrait of both his relationship with Delhi as well as that of a city going through a period of great change. This work shows us a mega urban mass that uniquely juxtaposes beauty, opportunity and desire against frustration, darkness and inequality. A capital that trades idioms in fleeting moments revealing the strange coexistence of those that have, and those that do not. A city that is both purana and naya.
Fisk didn’t go looking for his subject matter but carried a camera on him 24 hours a day. More often than not he would not look through the view finder to compose, preferring but a more fluid approach of camera out of pocket / back in pocket with one sweep of the arm. In many ways this work is cathartic, it acts as a reaction to the finely composed aesthetic of his earlier work. A chance to break free from the confines of well composed photojournalism.
Adrian Fisk’s work has featured in the world’s top current-affairs periodicals, from National Geographic and the Financial Times Weekend Magazine to Vanity Fair, Paris Match, Stern and The Economist. His work has been exhibited in Europe, Asia and the United States and is included in the permanent collection of the museum of London. In 2007 he was identified as one of ‘The World’s Top Photographers’ in the book published by Rotovision. He was born in 1970 and grew up in Devon, the UK. After graduating with a degree in photography from Blackpool and Flyde College he moved to London where he spent the next five years documenting youth counter-culture against the 1990s socio-political backdrop of environmental protests, illegal raves and anti-globalization. He went on to work for advertising and design agencies such as Saatchi & Saatchi, JWT and BMP DDB for clients including Nikon, Vodafone and other major international brands. He moved to India in 2003, where his work has provided an anthropological and political visual analysis of South Asia during a unique period of growth, and where he has continued to explore the theme of youth.
