The Smithsonian's National Museum of American History
Taken in July 2009. This is a sample of what is inside the museum. I did not get to take pictures of everything due to time constraints, but there is enough here that you get the picture. These are photos of the main entrance with a CP3O from "Star Wars," a lot of first inventions, a Thomas Edison exhibit, a transportation exhibit, Kermit the Frog, Oscar the Grouch, the ruby slippers from Wizard of OZ, and lots of Abraham Lincoln items. Definitely worth a trip to see.

Footage of giant panda birth at the Smithsonian's National Zoo
As panda cam watchers may have noticed: from Mei's behavior and the sounds we're hearing, we have a giant panda cub! As far as we can tell, the cub was born at about 10:46 pm on September 16. According to chief veterinarian Suzan Murray: "Mei Xiang is behaving exactly the same way she did when Tai Shan was born. She is cradling her cub closely , and she looks so tired, but every time she tries to lay down, the cub squawks and she sits right up and cradles the cub more closely. She is the poster child for a perfect panda mom." We believe there is only one cub. If the cub is to have a twin, we should know by sunrise. For now, the only way animal care staff will monitor the cub is using the web cams. Our goal is for Mei Xiang to raise this cub naturally. With Tai Shan, it wasn't until he was about two weeks old that Mei walked away from him briefly and our veterinary team was able to give him a brief well-cub exam. Keep your eyes on the panda cam and on our website and social media networks for more #cubwatch updates!

Shanthi, the National Zoo's Musical Elephant, Plays the Harmonica!
When the elephant keepers at the Smithsonian's National Zoo hear the sound of a harmonica, it's not the radio they've left on. Instead, it's the Zoo's 36-year-old Asian elephant, Shanthi, who, unsolicited, has a propensity for coming up with her own ditties using whatever instruments the keepers have provided. These include harmonicas, horns and other noisemakers. The Zoo has captured some of Shanthi's most recent capriccios on this video. The keepers provided the instruments after they noticed that Shanthi, more so than the Zoo's two other elephants, likes to make noise with objects. According to keepers, she will use her trunk to cover anything with a hole in it and blow until it makes a sound—and will often coax the objects to get different types of sounds from it. She taps objects with her trunk and flaps her ears against objects that make noise. Now they give the melodious pachyderm noisemakers as a form of enrichment. Shanthi is the mother of the Zoo's 10-year-old calf, Kandula. Asian elephants are endangered in the wild, where 30000 to 50000 Asian elephants still live in the forests of south and southeast Asia. Visitors to the Zoo can watch an elephant demonstration, which sometimes includes Shanthi's musical skills, at 11 am most days at the Zoo's Elephant Trails.

PETER SHIRE : CUPS
Film by Eric Minh Swenson. Music by James Lucchesi
Lora Schlesinger Gallery presents Peter Shire's Cups, 1974 - 2012 featuring a body of work focused on more than 30 years of ceramic cups, that have never before been exhibited. The show is the artist's first solo exhibition with the gallery. It opens Saturday, April 21 from 5 - 7 pm and is on view through June 9, 2012.
Peter Shire is recognized for being an innovative and unclassifiable artist. Since the 1970's Peter Shire has been at an intersection where craft, fine art, architectural and industrial design collide. He is not a "traditional" ceramist and his ceramics push the boundaries and preconceived notions of clay. For nearly four decades Peter Shire has made a collection of teapots, cups and other functional items typically found in domestic settings with atypical designs. The works have challenged ideas of form versus function, and have become sculptural objects occupying domestic settings.
Cups, 1974 - 2012 is a body of work focused on Shire's interpretation of a commonly used vessel, but are in no shape or form commonplace objects. A few of the works in the show have fragile thin walls that appear as if they could be easily chipped if touched by human lips. Their painterly surfaces and sculptural elements added or removed, give each cup an individual personality and sense of presence. Some of the larger cups have bases, handles and sculptural elements that look like assemblages or collages of ideas sculpted with clay. The cup Peach With Tamago Slice is an example of a cup that has been cleverly and colorfully compiled to create a playful construction whose changing surface and multiple textures propel the eye into multiple moments of discovery. Peter Shire's work continues to challenge conventional mass produced objects with a keen sense of design and personal touch. He has built his career freely combining architectural concepts, design principles, fine art and craft without letting solemnity overwhelm the seriousness of play.
Peter Shire lives and works in Echo Park, Los Angeles. He is a graduate from the famous Chouinard Art Institute in Los Angeles. He has had over 100 solo exhibitions nationally. His work can be found in over 35 museums world wide, including the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Victoria & Albert Museum and The Israel Museum. He has completed over 25 public art works including the North Hollywood Gateway, The Ahmanson Music Center in Los Angeles, the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority on Wilshire and Vermont, and many more.

Birdemic: Shock And Terror Official Theatrical Trailer
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
TIM AND ERIC TO HOST WORLD PREMIERE OF ‘BIRDEMIC: SHOCK AND TERROR’
ON FEBRUARY 27TH IN LOS ANGELES
Severin Films Partners with The Cinefamily to
Debut James Nguyen’s ‘Romantic Thriller’
LOS ANGELES, CA, February 10, 2010 – Severin Films (http://www.severin-films.com/) today announced that Tim and Eric, creators and stars of Adult Swim sketch comedy show Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!, will host the highly-anticipated world premiere of BIRDEMIC: SHOCK AND TERROR (www.birdemic.com), on February 27th at The Cinefamily in Los Angeles, California. Following the screening, Tim and Eric will lead a Q&A; with writer/producer/director James Nguyen and stars Alan Bagh and Whitney Moore. Severin is working on transforming the theater into a temporary aviary with epic displays of BIRDEMIC special effects, props and costumes that will put the Smithsonian to shame. An EPK video for BIRDEMIC can be viewed at http://vimeo.com/9082600. Fans can connect with BIRDEMIC on Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/birdemic), Twitter (http://twitter.com/birdemic) and the Web (www.birdemic.com).
“Finally, Birdemic will have its proper and much-deserved debut, said Carl Daft, CEO and co-founder of Severin Films. “Modern comedy legends, Tim and Eric, are beyond generous to host Severin’s world premiere of the film—we can’t think of a more fitting introduction to this night of groundbreaking cinema.
BIRDEMIC, described by Nguyen as “a romantic thriller, is a horror/action/special-effects-driven love story about a young couple trapped in a small Northern California town under siege by homicidal birds. BIRDEMIC also tackles topical issues of global warming, avian flu, world peace, organic living, sexual promiscuity and lavatory access.
Nguyen, a 42-year-old Vietnamese refugee, wrote, cast and shot the film over the course of four years using salary from his day job as a mid-level software salesman in Silicon Valley. The film pays homage to Hitchcock’s THE BIRDS via location shooting in Mission Bay, California, as well as an appearance by star of THE BIRDS Tippi Hedren (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tippi_Hedren). When rejected for an official screening slot at Sundance, Nguyen spent eight days driving up and down the festival’s nearby streets in a van covered with fake birds, frozen blood and BIRDEMIC posters, while loudspeakers blared the sounds of eagle attacks and human screams. The tactic caught the attention of festival organizers, filmgoers and local police, as well as executives from Severin Films. Severin’s executives walked into a screening, took one look at Nguyen’s masterwork, and immediately locked up BIRDEMIC’s worldwide rights for the next twenty years. Discussions are currently underway for Severin to add an additional thirty years to the initial agreement.

Sony NEX-VG10 Test Run [1080p HD] - nexvg10.info
This is a rough-and-tumble, run-and-gun series of video clips that I shot on my lunch break and after work today in Washington, D.C. It's illegal there to use a tripod without a permit (seriously), so I apologize in advance for all these shots having the shakes. Sony's Active Steadyshot image stabilization is best-in-class as a mechanism, but seems to perform slightly worse than their previous flagship high-end consumer camcorders, the HDR-XR500V and later HDR-XR550V (makes sense, since the sensor in the NEX-VG10 is dramatically larger and requires more than just micro-movements for stabilization). That's where I'm coming from.
I have not applied any color-grading, image processing or otherwise to these clips (it hurts!); they were dumped straight from the camera onto an Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 timeline, then rendered out to 1080p at a high bitrate for uploading to Vimeo. You can download the raw file using the link at the right side of your screen (if you're a logged-in Vimeo member).
Aside from the luxury of shooting these sights on another beautiful day in Washington, D.C., I found a few opportunities here and there to push the limits of the NEX-VG10. You'll see parallel lines on buildings and waves on water that invite aliasing/moire distortion; a propeller that invites rolling shutter; lens barrel distortion; and of course that vastly over-used effect of rack-focusing between foregrounds and distant backgrounds.
In order to achieve that shallow depth-of-field for which this camera is so coveted, I filmed everything in aperture priority mode, always setting the F-stop to as low a number as possible. Since I only used (and only have) the stock lens, which goes from 18 to 200 mm, and from F3.5 to 6.3, at the widest angle -- almost always there -- the aperture was set at F3.5. For brightness variations, I let the camera do its auto-gain and left the exposure setting at 0, which often results in washed-out brightness that I would have otherwise manually throttled down. I also let the camera auto-focus except for those moments when I rack-focused from foreground to background and vice-versa. The recording mode is AVCHD at 24 Mbps. Playback here is at 1080p when the HD icon at the bottom-right of the frame is blue; if your Internet connection or graphics card is giving you trouble, toggle it off.
For all the world's sample videos from this camcorder so far collected into once place, along with discussions and Web links, visit http://vimeo.com/groups/nexvg10.
