Peter III (21 February 1728 – 17 July [O.S. 6 July] 1762) (Russian: Пётр III Фëдорович, Pyotr III Fyodorovich) was emperor of Russia for six months in 1762. He was born in Kiel as Karl Peter Ulrich, the only child of Charles Frederick, Duke of Holstein-Gottorp and Anna Petrovna, the elder surviving daughter of Peter the Great. The German Peter could hardly speak Russian and pursued a strongly pro-Prussian policy, which made him an unpopular leader. He was possibly assassinated as a result of a conspiracy led by his German wife Princess Sophie Friederike Auguste von Anhalt-Zerbst-Dornburg, who succeeded him to the throne as Catherine II. His death could also have been the result of a drunken brawl with his bodyguard when he was being held captive after Catherine's coup.
Peter was born in Kiel, in the duchy of Holstein-Gottorp. His parents were Charles Frederick, Duke of Holstein-Gottorp (nephew of Charles XII of Sweden), and Anna Petrovna, a daughter of Emperor Peter I and Empress Catherine I of Russia. His mother died three months after his birth. In 1739, Peter's father died, and he became Duke of Holstein-Gottorp as Charles Peter Ulrich (German: Karl Peter Ulrich).
When his aunt, Anna's younger sister Elizabeth, became Empress of Russia, she brought Peter from Germany to Russia and proclaimed him her heir presumptive in the autumn of 1742. Previously in 1742, the 14-year-old Peter was proclaimed King of Finland during the Russo-Swedish War (1741–1743), when Russian troops held Finland. This proclamation was based on his succession rights to territories held by his childless granduncle, the late Charles XII of Sweden who also had been Grand Duke of Finland. About the same time, in October 1742, he was chosen by the Swedish parliament to become heir presumptive to the Swedish throne. However, the Swedish parliament was unaware of the fact that he had also been proclaimed heir presumptive to the throne of Russia, and when their envoy arrived in Saint Petersburg in November, it was too late. It has been reported that the underage Peter's succession rights to Sweden were renounced on his behalf.
Empress Elizabeth arranged for Peter to marry his second cousin, Sophia Augusta Frederica (later Catherine the Great), daughter of Christian August, Prince of Anhalt-Zerbst and Johanna Elisabeth of Holstein-Gottorp. The young princess formally converted to Russian Orthodoxy and took the name Ekaterina Alexeievna (i.e., Catherine). They married on 21 August 1745. The marriage was not a happy one, but produced one son: the future Emperor Paul; and one daughter: Anna Petrovna (20 December 1757 – 19 March 1759). Catherine later claimed that Paul was not fathered by Peter: that, in fact, they had never consummated the marriage. During the sixteen years of their residence in Oranienbaum, Catherine took numerous lovers, while her husband did the same thing she did in the beginning.
The classical view of Peter's character is mainly drawn out of the memoirs of his wife and successor. She described him as an "idiot", "drunkard from Holstein", "good-for-nothing" etc. This portrait of Peter can be found in most history books, including 1911 Encyclopaedia Britannica:
Nature had made him mean, the smallpox had made him hideous, and his degraded habits made him loathsome. And Peter had all the sentiments of the worst kind of small German prince of the time. He had the conviction that his princeship entitled him to disregard decency and the feelings of others. He planned brutal practical jokes, in which blows had always a share. His most manly taste did not rise above the kind of military interest which has been defined as "corporal's mania," the passion for uniforms, pipeclay, buttons, the "tricks of parade and the froth of discipline." He detested the Russians, and surrounded himself with Holsteiners.

The House of Romanov (Russian: Рома́нов, IPA: [rɐˈmanəf]) was the second imperial dynasty, after the Rurik dynasty, to rule over Russia, which reigned from 1613 until the abdication of Emperor Nicholas II on March 15, 1917, as a result of the February Revolution. The direct male line of the Romanovs came to an end when Elizabeth of Russia died in 1762. After an era of dynastic crisis, the House of Holstein-Gottorp, a cadet branch of the House of Oldenburg, ascended the throne in 1762 with Peter III, a grandson of Peter I. All rulers from the middle of the 18th century to the revolution of 1917 were descended from that branch. Though officially known as the House of Romanov, these descendants of the Romanov and Oldenburg Houses are sometimes referred to as Holstein-Gottorp-Romanov. "In early 1917 the Romanov Dynasty had 65 members, 18 of which were killed by the Bolsheviks. The remaining 47 members were exiled abroad." In 1924, Grand Duke Kirill Vladimirovich, the direct male-line patrilineal descendant of Alexander II of Russia, claimed the headship of the defunct Imperial House of Russia. His granddaughter, Grand Duchess Maria Vladimirovna of Russia, is the current pretender, her only child George Mikhailovich is her heir apparent.
Legally, it is not clear if a ukase was issued that abolished the surname of Michael Romanov upon his accession to the Russian throne or of his subsequent male-line descendants, although by tradition members of reigning dynasties seldom use surnames. Rather, they are known by their dynastic titles ("Tsarevich Ivan Alexeevich", "Grand Duke Nikolai Nikolaevich", etc.) In addition, since 1761 Russian rulers descend from the son of Grand Duchess Anna Petrovna of Russia and Charles Frederick, Duke of Holstein-Gottorp, and thus they were no longer Romanovs by patrilineage, but belonged to the Holstein-Gottorp cadet branch of the German House of Oldenburg. In such genealogical literature as the Almanach de Gotha, the name of Russia's ruling dynasty from the time of Peter III is "Holstein-Gottorp-Romanov". However, the name "Romanov" and "House of Romanov" were often used in official references to the Russian imperial house. The coat of arms of the Romanov boyars was included in legislation on the imperial dynasty, and in 1913 there was an official jubilee celebrating the "300th Anniversary of the Romanovs rule".
After the February Revolution all members of the imperial family were given the surname "Romanov" by special decree of the Provisional Government of Russia. The only exception were the morganatic descendants of the Grand Duke Dmitri Pavlovich who, in exile, took the surname Il'insky
The Romanovs share their origin with two dozen other Russian noble families. Their earliest common ancestor is one Andrei Kobyla, attested around 1347 as a boyar in the service of Semyon I of Moscow. Later generations assigned to Kobyla the most illustrious pedigrees. An 18th-century genealogy claimed that he was the son of the Prussian prince Glanda Kambila, who came to Russia in the second half of the 13th century, fleeing the invading Germans. Indeed, one of the leaders of the Old Prussian rebellion of 1260-1274 against the Teutonic order was named Glande.
His actual origin may have been less spectacular. Not only is Kobyla Russian for "mare", some of his relatives also had as nicknames the terms for horses and other domestic animals, thus suggesting descent from one of the royal equerries. One of Kobyla's sons, Feodor, a boyar in the boyar duma of Dmitri Donskoi, was nicknamed Koshka (cat). His descendants took the surname Koshkin, then changed it to Zakharin, which family later split into two branches: Zakharin-Yakovlev and Zakharin-Yuriev. During the reign of Ivan the Terrible, the former family became known as Yakovlev (Alexander Herzen among them), whereas grandchildren of Roman Zakharin-Yuriev changed their name to Romanov.
The family fortunes soared when Roman's daughter, Anastasia Zakharyina, married Ivan IV, the Rurikid Grand Prince of Moscow, on 3 (13) February 1547. Since her husband had assumed the title of tsar, which literally means "Caesar", on 16 January 1547, she was crowned the very first tsaritsa of Russia. Their marriage was a happy one, but her mysterious death in 1560 changed Ivan's character for the worse. Suspecting the boyars of having poisoned his beloved, the tsar started a reign of terror against them. Among his children by Anastasia, the elder (Ivan) was murdered by the tsar in a quarrel; the younger Feodor, a pious and lethargic prince, inherited the throne upon his father's death in 1584.

Early life and character
Catherine later claimed that Paul was not fathered by Peter: that, in fact, they had never consummated the marriage.[1] During the sixteen years of their residence in Oranienbaum, Catherine took numerous lovers, while her husband did the same thing she did in the beginning.

Peter III (21 February 1728 – 17 July [O.S. 6 July] 1762) (Russian: Пётр III Фëдорович, Pyotr III Fyodorovich) was Emperor of Russia for six months in 1762. He was born as Karl Peter Ulrich, son of the Duke of Holstein-Gottorp. The German Peter could hardly speak Russian and pursued a strongly pro-Prussian policy, which made him an unpopular leader. He was likely assassinated as a result of a conspiracy led by his German wife Princess Sophie Friederike Auguste von Anhalt-Zerbst-Dornburg, who succeeded him to the throne as Catherine II.

Early life and character
Elizaveta Petrovna (Russian: Елизаве́та (Елисаве́т) Петро́вна) (29 December [O.S. 18 December] 1709 – 5 January 1762 [O.S. 25 December 1761]), also known as Yelisavet and Elizabeth, was the Empress of Russia from 1741 until her death. She led the country into the two major European conflicts of her time: the War of Austrian Succession (1740–48) and the Seven Years' War (1756–63). On the eve of her death, Russia spanned almost 6,250,000 square miles (16,200,000 km2).
Her domestic policies allowed the nobles to gain dominance in local government while shortening their terms of service to the state. She encouraged Mikhail Lomonosov's establishment of the University of Moscow and Ivan Shuvalov's foundation of the Imperial Academy of Arts in Saint Petersburg. She also spent exorbitant sums of money on the grandiose baroque projects of her favourite architect, Bartolomeo Rastrelli, particularly in Peterhof and Tsarskoye Selo. The Winter Palace and the Smolny Cathedral in Saint Petersburg are among the chief monuments of her reign. She remains one of the most popular Russian monarchs due to her strong opposition to Prussian policies and her decision not to execute a single person during her reign.
Elizabeth, the second-oldest surviving daughter of Peter the Great and Catherine I, was born at Kolomenskoye, near Moscow, on 18 December 1709 (O.S.). Her parents had secretly married in the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in St. Petersburg in November 1707. The marriage was made public in February 1712. As her parents' marriage had not been publicly acknowledged at the time of her birth, Elizabeth's political opponents would later user her "illegitimacy" to challenge her right to the throne. On 6 March 1711, she was proclaimed a Tsarevna, and on 23 December 1721, a Tsesarevna.
Of Peter and Catherine's five sons and seven daughters, only two daughters, Anna (born 1708) and Elizabeth survived. In 1724 Anna became betrothed to the Duke of Holstein-Gottorp, nephew of the late King Charles XII of Sweden, Peter's old adversary. Her father had tried to find Elizabeth an equally impressive match with the French Royal court when he paid a visit there. It was Peter's intention to marry his second daughter to the young French King Louis XV, but the Bourbons declined the offer, as they deemed her mother's origin too obscure.[5] Elizabeth had been betrothed to Prince Karl Augustus of Holstein-Gottorp, son of Christian Augustus, Prince of Eutin. Politically, it appeared a useful and respectable alliance.A few days after the betrothal, Karl Augustus died (31 May 1727). At the time of Peter's death in 1725, no marriage plan had succeeded.
As a child, Elizabeth was bright, if not brilliant, but received only an imperfect and desultory formal education. Her father adored her. She resembled him both physically and temperamentally. Peter had no leisure to devote to her training, and her mother was too uneducated to superintend her formal studies. She had a French governess and was fluent in Italian, German and French. She was also an excellent dancer and rider. From her earliest years, she delighted everyone with her extraordinary beauty and vivacity. She was commonly known as the leading beauty of the Russian Empire.
So long as Aleksandr Danilovich Menshikov remained in power (until September 1727), the government of Elizabeth's adolescent half-nephew Peter II (reigned 1727-1730) treated her with liberality and distinction. The Dolgorukovs, an ancient boyar family, deeply resented Menshikov. With Peter II's attachment to Prince Ivan Dolgorukov, and with two of their family members on the Supreme State Council, they had the leverage for a successful coup. Menshikov was arrested, stripped of all his honours and properties and exiled to northern Siberia, where he died in November 1729. The Dolgorukovs hated the memory of Peter the Great, and practically banished his daughter from Court.

The sensational Carroll Foundation Trust and parallel Carroll Maryland Trust multi-billion dollar offshore tax fraud bribery scandal which is encircling 10 Downing Street and the

Sources have confirmed that the explosive FBI Scotland Yard cross-border criminal “standard of proof” prosecution files contain a forensic evidential paper trail which surrounds
the British Ships Register Guernsey concealment of the Carroll Marine Global Corporation’s multi-million dollar fixed assets register which effectively impulsed the systematic
criminal seizure of Gerald Carroll’s civilian and military-industrial investment holdings on a worldwide basis.
Further sources have disclosed that the dossiers contain three Revenue & Customs thorough criminal investigation reports into the much wider systematic break-up and liquidation of
major operating divisions of the Carroll Global Corporation industrial empire which has prompted well seasoned Washington DC financial observers to remark that the Gerald Carroll
debacle has highlighted the serious level of corruption within the UK Government’s inter-agencies who are charged with prosecuting white collar criminal bankers accountants and
lawyers.

Aerospace Development Corporation Plc Strategic Research & Development Corporation Plc and Carroll Aircraft Corporation Plc group structures.
Scotland Yard “leaked” sources have disclosed that the Carroll Foundation Trust criminal “standard of proof” prosecution files contain forensic specimen exhibits of fraudulently
incorporated HSBC International offshore accounts Barclays International offshore accounts and Coutts & Co Gerald Carroll accounts which embezzled a staggering two hundred million
dollars of the Carroll Foundation Trust’s huge treasury investment holdings.
This source also said that the dossiers contain forensic specimen exhibits of the co-ordinated break-ins burglaries theft and criminal seizure offences which were “targeted” at
Gerald Carroll’s multi-million dollar Eaton Square Belgravia penthouse and Westminster residences in central London following a complete refusal by the Metropolitan Police to
provide assistance covering a bizarre six to eight years.
The Carroll Foundation Trust files are held within a complete lockdown at the FBI Washington DC field office and the Metropolitan Police Scotland Yard London under the supervision
of the commissioner Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe who has an intimate knowledge of this case which stretches the globe.

The sensational Carroll Foundation Trust and parallel Carroll Maryland Trust multi-billion dollar offshore tax fraud bribery scandal which is encircling 10 Downing Street and the
Conservative Party has revealed that the Channel Islands tax havens of Guernsey and Jersey have been named in this case of international importance.
Further sources have disclosed that the dossiers contain three Revenue & Customs thorough criminal investigation reports into the much wider systematic break-up and liquidation of
major operating divisions of the Carroll Global Corporation industrial empire which has prompted well seasoned Washington DC financial observers to remark that the Gerald Carroll
debacle has highlighted the serious level of corruption within the UK Government’s inter-agencies who are charged with prosecuting white collar criminal bankers accountants and
lawyers.

The Carroll Foundation Trust and parallel Carroll Maryland Trust multi-billion dollar offshore tax fraud bribery scandal has disclosed that Gerald Carroll’s Farnborough Aerospace
Development Plc and Carroll Aircraft Corporation Plc group structures were “centered around” HM Ministry of Defence high level officials and Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of
Constabulary chairmen in this case of international importance.
Sources have revealed that the sudden death of a HM Ministry of Defence retired Permanent Secretary who was Chairman of the Carroll Aircraft Corporation is fueling feverish
speculation that his demise was actually cold blooded murder in a bungled attempt to cover-up the criminal liquidation of major operating divisions of the Carroll Global
Corporation’s worldwide interests spanning an incredible sixteen years.
Further sources have revealed that Gerald Carroll’s Farnborough Aerospace Aerospace Centre in Hampshire England was “targeted” by BAE Systems and HSBC International within the

The sensational Carroll Foundation Trust and parallel Carroll Maryland Trust multi-billion dollar offshore money laundering bribery scandal which is encircling the beleaguered Lloyds Bank chairman Lord Blackwell has disclosed that this case is now regarded as one of the largest ever white collar organized crime bank fraud heist operations in living memory.
Sources have confirmed that the explosive FBI Scotland Yard cross-border criminal “standard of proof” prosecution files contain forensic specimen exhibits of forged and falsified Lloyds Bank accounts which are “directly linked” to the fraudulent incorporation of a Withers Worldwide law firm shadow “criminal parallel trust” which effectively impulsed the embezzlement of two hundred million dollars of the Carroll Foundation Trust’s huge treasury investment holdings that were held at the Queen’s bankers Coutts & Co and Barclays International.
Scotland Yard leaked sources have disclosed that the files have named the core cell high value suspects which includes Anthony Richard Clarke a trustee of the Carroll Foundation Trust who is currently trading under the corporate umbrella of a bewildering array of UK Companies House “registered” criminal front corporations based in a small suite of offices at 100 Pall Mall London close to Buckingham Palace and Scotland.
The Carroll Foundation Trust files are held within a complete lockdown at the FBI Washington DC field office and the Metropolitan Police Scotland Yard London under the supervision of the commissioner Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe who is known to have an intimate knowledge of this case which stretches the globe spanning a staggering sixteen years.

The sensational Carroll Foundation Trust and parallel Carroll Maryland Trust multi-billion dollar tax fraud bribery scandal has disclosed that yet another UK Law Society firm has been named in the explosive criminal “standard of proof” prosecution files which are currently “held in custody” at Scotland Yard.
Sources have confirmed that the City of London law firm Penningtons Manches premises were penetrated by the FBI Scotland Yard targeted Withers Worldwide law firm crime syndicate which removed Carroll Foundation Trust settlement deeds archival records in what was a bungled attempt to destroy a forensic paper trail leading back to this massive City of London bank fraud heist that stretches the globe.
Further sources have said that the “Penningtons Manches blue file” dossiers contain compelling evidential material which surrounds the fraudulent incorporation of a Withers Worldwide law firm shadow “criminal parallel trust” that effectively embezzled a mind boggling two hundred million dollars of Gerald Carroll’s huge treasury investment holdings which were held the Queen’s bankers Coutts & Co and Barclays Bank.
The latest disturbing insights into the Gerald Carroll debacle which involves yet another law firm follows on from British and American media reports on the case which have revealed that major parts of the Gerald Carroll life tenant estate records were destroyed at the Pinney Talfourd law firm’s premises in Brentwood Essex.
Scotland Yard leaked sources have said that Haslers the accountancy firm with offices in Loughton Essex and Nassau Bahamas are known to be one of the pivotal “central actors” in this case spanning a staggering sixteen years.

America 2020: Will it be Creative Freedom or Mechanized Tyranny?
You have never heard an interview with Catherine Austin Fitts like this before in this special extended Dark Journalist episode!
Join Dark Journalist as he welcomes back Former Assistant Housing Secretary and Financial Expert Catherine Austin Fitts for her sixth appearance on the show. In what will be remembered as the most amazing, insightful, gripping, stunning and controversial Dark Journalist episode on record, Catherine reveals that her deep research has shown that America is now at a major crossroads and has two choices for the country that we will become by the year 2020: Creative Freedom or Mechanized Tyranny, there is no third way.
The Ultimate Catherine Austin Fitts Interview!
Catherine exposes globalist forces that operate at covert levels throughout our society in corporate, government and institutional roles. She has dubbed this group ‘Mr. Global’ and she had a chance to witness their clandestine actions up close when she worked in the halls of government as the Assistant Secretary of Housing and Urban Development during the Bush Sr. administration and as a Managing Partner at Monolitic Wall Street Firm Dillon Read & Co.
America 2020
With this great experience she has learned to interpret geopolitical, societal and economic trends that show the design of Mr. Global’s Master Plan and it is very unnerving: Mechanization, AI, Robotics, Centralized Control, Domestic Militarization and Surveillance, GMO Agriculture, Black Budget Drain on Resources, and reducing the thriving middle class to spectators to their own debt slavery. She outlines the dangers of Common Core as a way to turn American children into Servile Robots who can’t respond to social interaction, but are primed to be programmed and harvested by Entrainment Technology on their smartphones that can devastate their creativity and capacity for mental growth and self determination.
The UFO Economy
Catherine and Dark Journalist deeply investigate the untouchable subject of advanced UFO technology and surmise that whoever is operating that technology has a major role in controlling the power structure on planet earth today. By developing a Secret Space Program, these covert groups have diverted trillions of missing dollars from the American Economy to create a UFO Economy via the Black Budget and are creating a huge Breakaway Infrastructure in Space, but why? What is really happening in our solar system and why has this paranoid secrecy became a way of life for the National Security Deep State?
Fitts sees one last chance for the American Middle Class to rise up and expose the forces that are marshaled against them and their children and she explains what the dangerous stakes are if America fails and gives us a glimpse of the dystopian future world we will inhabit unless the game and the invisible players inside the matrix are exposed. She explains the objective, balanced attitude we must hold and what actions we must take to regain our power from corporate and media overlords that are linked to covert intelligence agencies that want to consolidate power quickly before the sleeping giant of the American People wake up and demolishes their plans for world domination!

The Lowe down! Sean Lowe and Catherine Giudici recently stopped by Us Weekly's New York City headquarters and dished on everything from Lowe's new book For the Right Reasons to why so few married couples come out of The Bachelor.
While on the 17th season of The Bachelor, the Texas native, 31, met and fell in love with his now-wife Giudici, 28. She accepted his marriage proposal in the March 2013 season finale after Lowe let runner-up Lindsay Yenter go. The happy twosome exchanged vows in January 2014, and celebrated their one-year anniversary with a trip to Santa Barbara, Calif. last month.
"The most important thing I learned in our first year of marriage is that Catherine's always right and I'm usually wrong," Lowe told Us, inspiring a quick laugh and response of "Oh, whatever!" from Giudici.

While the lovebirds were able to find a happy marriage on the show, they are one of just a few couples who have tied the knot after the final rose was bestowed upon the winner.
"It makes perfect sense!" Lowe said of the small number of successful Bachelor couples. "You spend just a small amount of time with that person before getting engaged, which sounds nuts. I still can't believe that we got engaged at the end of that thing."
"You leave the show, you get into the real world and find out like, 'Oh, crap! Being in a relationship isn't always easy and it actually takes work,'" Lowe continued as Giudici joked, "And who is this person?"

"Yeah, and who is this person!" Lowe added, echoing his wife's words. "That's not who I thought she was."
Following in the great tradition of many other failed Bachelor couples, former Bachelorette Andi Dorfman and her pick Josh Murray surprised fans last month when they announced that they were calling off their engagement and splitting up. The news broke just days after Dorfman and Murray hit the red carpet for the premiere of season 19 of The Bachelor, and appeared to be happy together.
"We were at the premiere of the newest Bachelor with Andi and Josh," Giudici explained. "We were on the red carpet with them, I was hanging out with Andi, he was hanging out with Josh. We were just, you know, talking about everything cause we're all friends... It was so strange. The timing of it couldn't have been weirder. Right after the Bachelor premiere where they showed up like that."

"I was asking Josh if they were planning their wedding!" Sean noted. "They probably shouldn't have done that red carpet."
Giudici and Lowe, who have been tuning in to the latest season and live-tweeting as Chris Soules attempts to find love in his group of women, also spilled to Us about who they would pick for Prince Farming. Find out why Lowe was pulling for "the crazy one" and if the couple will ever do another reality show in the video above!

A duke (male) (British English: /djuːk/ or American English: /duːk/) or duchess (female) can either be a monarch ruling over a duchy or a member of the nobility, historically of highest rank below the monarch. The title comes from French duc, itself from the Latin dux, 'leader', a term used in republican Rome to refer to a military commander without an official rank (particularly one of Germanic or Celtic origin), and later coming to mean the leading military commander of a province.
During the Middle Ages the title signified first among the Germanic monarchies. Dukes were the rulers of the provinces and the superiors of the counts in the cities and later, in the feudal monarchies, the highest-ranking peers of the king. A duke may or may not be, ipso facto, a member of the nation's peerage: in the United Kingdom and Spain all dukes are/were also peers of the realm, in France some were and some were not, while the term is not applicable to dukedoms of other nations, even where an institution similar to the peerage (e.g., Grandeeship, Imperial Diet, Hungarian House of Magnates) existed.

Yekaterina Alexeevna or Catherine II, also known as Catherine the Great (Russian: Екатерина II Великая, Yekaterina II Velikaya; 2 May [O.S. 21 April] 1729 – 17 November [O.S. 6 November] 1796), was the most renowned and the longest-ruling female leader of Russia, reigning from 9 July [O.S. 28 June] 1762 until her death in 1796 at the age of 67. Her reign was called Russia's golden age. She was born in Stettin, Pomerania, Prussia as Sophie Friederike Auguste von Anhalt-Zerbst-Dornburg, and came to power following a coup d'état, at the end of the Seven Years' War, shortly upon which her husband, Peter III, was assassinated. Russia was revitalized under her reign, growing larger and stronger than ever and becoming recognized as one of the great powers of Europe.
In both her accession to power and in rule of her empire, Catherine often relied on her noble favorites, most notably Grigory Orlov and Grigory Potemkin. Assisted by highly successful generals such as Pyotr Rumyantsev and Alexander Suvorov, and admirals such as Fyodor Ushakov, she governed at a time when the Russian Empire was expanding rapidly by conquest and diplomacy. In the south, the Crimean Khanate was crushed following victories over the Ottoman Empire in the Russo-Turkish wars, and Russia colonised the vast territories of Novorossiya along the coasts of the Black and Azov Seas. In the west, the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, ruled by Catherine's former lover, king Stanisław August Poniatowski, was eventually partitioned, with the Russian Empire gaining the largest share. In the east, Russia started to colonise Alaska, establishing Russian America.
Catherine reformed the administration of Russian guberniyas, and many new cities and towns were founded on her orders. An admirer of Peter the Great, Catherine continued to modernise Russia along Western European lines. However, military conscription and economy continued to depend on serfdom, and the increasing demands of the state and private landowners led to increased levels of reliance on serfs. This was one of the chief reasons behind several rebellions, including the large-scale Pugachev's Rebellion of cossacks and peasants.
The period of Catherine the Great's rule, the Catherinian Era, is often considered the Golden Age of the Russian Empire and the Russian nobility. The Manifesto on Freedom of the Nobility, issued during the short reign of Peter III and confirmed by Catherine, freed Russian nobles from compulsory military or state service. Construction of many mansions of the nobility, in the classical style endorsed by the Empress, changed the face of the country. A notable example of an enlightened despot, a correspondent of Voltaire and an amateur opera librettist, Catherine presided over the age of the Russian Enlightenment, when the Smolny Institute, the first state-financed higher education institution for women in Europe, was established.
Catherine's father, Christian August, Prince of Anhalt-Zerbst, belonged to the ruling German family of Anhalt, but held the rank of a Prussian general in his capacity as Governor of the city of Stettin (now Szczecin, Poland). Born Sophia Augusta Fredericka (German: Sophie Friederike Auguste von Anhalt-Zerbst-Dornburg, nicknamed "Figchen") in Stettin, Pomerania, two of her first cousins became Kings of Sweden: Gustav III and Charles XIII. In accordance with the custom then prevailing in the ruling dynasties of Germany, she received her education chiefly from a French governess and from tutors. Catherine's childhood was quite uneventful. She once wrote to her correspondent Baron Grimm: "I see nothing of interest in it." Although Catherine was born a princess, her family had very little money. Catherine was to come to power based on her mother's relations to wealthy members of royalty.
The choice of Sophia as wife of her second cousin, the prospective tsar Peter of Holstein-Gottorp, resulted from some amount of diplomatic management in which Count Lestocq, Peter's aunt (the ruling Russian Empress Elizabeth), and Frederick II of Prussia took part. Lestocq and Frederick wanted to strengthen the friendship between Prussia and Russia to weaken Austria's influence and ruin the Russian chancellor Bestuzhev, on whom Empress Elizabeth relied, and who acted as a known partisan of Russo-Austrian co-operation. Catherine first met Peter III at the age of 10. Based on her writings, she found Peter detestable upon meeting him. She disliked his pale complexion and his fondness for alcohol at such a young age. Peter also still played with toy soldiers. Catherine would later write that she stayed at one end of the castle and Peter on the other.
