Occupied Fantasy: Literary Enclosures in the Age of Finance Capital
The Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal Bin Abdulaziz Alsaud Center for American Studies and Research (CASAR) organized a lecture entitled: "Occupied Fantasy: Literary Enclosures in the Age of Finance Capital," by Dr. Jordana Rosenber from University of Massachusetts, Amherst on Oct. 16, 2012. In the lecture Rosenberg argues that the politics of dispossession in Palestine are central to the history of the rise of finance capital in the US and globally. Because the rise of finance is rooted in neocolonial occupation, as well as in the intensification of US, carceral regimes, technologies of policing, and the super impoverishment of the toiling classes, dispossession in Western Asia is knitted together with dispossession in the US. Together, these two fronts of dispossession should guide us in contextualizing the literature of the age of finance. Via a close reading of US fantasy and science fiction by author Samuel Delany, I seek to show how a Palestine-oriented historical analytic shifts our understanding of US literary form from the mid-1970s to the present. Jordana Rosenberg is Associate Professor of English at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst. Dr. Rosenberg is the author of "Critical Enthusiasm: Capital Accumulation and the Transformation of Religious Passion_ (Oxford University Press, 2011), and, with Amy Villarejo, the co-editor of _Queer Studies and the Crises of Capitalism" (GLQ 18.1, 2011), as well the co-editor, with Chi-ming Yang, of "The Dispossessed Eighteenth ...

23. Finding your Purpose in a World of Financial Capitalism
Financial Markets (2011) (ECON 252) After reviewing the main themes of this course, Professor Shiller shares his views about finance from a broader perspective. His first topic, the morality of finance, centers on Peter Unger's Living High and Letting Die and William Graham Sumner's What the Social Classes Owe Each Other. Subsequently, he addresses the hopelessness about the world's future that some see from Malthus' dismal law from the Essay on the Principle of Population, but contrasts it with a positive outlook on purposes and goals in life. While discussing the endurance and survival of financial contracts, he outlines the cases of Germany after World War I, Iran after the Islamic Revolution, and South Africa after the end of apartheid, in which financial contracts prevailed, but does not fail to mention the cases of Russia after the Russian Revolution and Japan after World War II, in which it has not been the case. After a brief comparison between Mathematical Finance and Behavioral Finance, he elaborates on the interplay between wealth and inequality, building on Jacob Hacker's and Paul Pearson's Winner-Take-All Politics, Karl Marx's Das Kapital, and Robert K. Merton concept of the cosmopolitan class. Following this, he emphasizes the democratization of finance as an important future trend and provides examples for this process from his books The Subprime Solution,The New Financial Order and Finance and the Good Society. Professor Shiller concludes the course with ...

The Money Masters (Part 1 of 22)
The powers of financial capitalism had a far-reaching plan, nothing less than to create a world system of financial control in private hands able to dominate the political system of each country and the economy of the world as a whole...Their secret is that they have annexed from governments, monarchies, and republics the power to create the world's money..." THE MONEY MASTERS is a 3 1/2 hour non-fiction, historical documentary that traces the origins of the political power structure that rules our nation and the world today. The modern political power structure has its roots in the hidden manipulation and accumulation of gold and other forms of money. The development of fractional reserve banking practices in the 17th century brought to a cunning sophistication the secret techniques initially used by goldsmiths fraudulently to accumulate wealth. With the formation of the privately-owned Bank of England in 1694, the yoke of economic slavery to a privately-owned "central" bank was first forced upon the backs of an entire nation, not removed but only made heavier with the passing of the three centuries to our day. Nation after nation, including America, has fallen prey to this cabal of international central bankers. Segments: The Problem; The Money Changers; Roman Empire; The Goldsmiths of Medieval England; Tally Sticks; The Bank of England; The Rise of the Rothschilds; The American Revolution; The Bank of North America; The Constitutional Convention; First Bank of the US ...

Capitalism Collapse? 'Cash grab system cannot survive storm'
There is barely a corner of the globe that has not been touched by the current financial meltdown. But a senior sociology scholar at Yale University thinks the crisis is far wider than the economic crash - it is capitalism itself which is collapsing. Global Financial Crisis (Part 1 of 3)
Interview with Dr. Lim Mah-Hui, author of 'Nowhere to Hide: The Great Financial Crisis and Challenges for Asia' (Singapore: Institute for Southeast Asian Studies, 2010), conducted on behalf of Multiversity by Claude Alvares. For his analysis of the 2007 financial crisis, its causes and repercussions, Dr Lim draws upon his experience as a university professor and an international banker. He has lectured widely on the present financial crisis, including at the Asia Development Bank, the International Developing Economies Institute in Tokyo, the Asian Institute of Management and the University of the Philippines in Manila. He has also taught at Temple University in the US and the University of Malaya, and is a Senior Fellow in the Asian Public Intellectuals Program of the Nippon Foundation. Dr Lim's analysis of the financial crisis proceeds through three levels of causality, as discussed in his book: ideological market fundamentalism, deregulation of the banking industry, and structural problems with the global economy. He also surveys the role of inequality as a neglected aspect of financial crises over the past hundred years and offers a perspective on the role of China in the current crisis. The complete interview is available for viewing and downloading at the TV Multiversity channel on Vimeo: vimeo.com

Will Capitalism Save Or Destroy Your Retirement?
danielamerman.com Capitalism is one of the most powerful economic forces in the history of mankind, and in theory forms the base for traditional retirement investing. But is that how it's really going to work? Author and financial expert Daniel R. Amerman, CFA, challenges a key aspect of conventional retirement investing, and shows why capitalism may destroy more retirement wealth than it creates.
