Monthly Review is an independent Marxist journal^[1] published 11 times per year in New York City.

History[link]

The publication was founded by Harvard University economics instructor Paul Sweezy, who became the first editor. The New York Times described Sweezy as "the nation's leading Marxist intellectual and publisher during the cold war and the McCarthy era."^[1] The first issue of Monthly Review appeared in May 1949. Its lead article was "Why Socialism?" by physicist Albert Einstein.^[2] During the McCarthyism of the early 1950s, its original editors Paul Sweezy and Leo Huberman were targeted for "subversive activities." Sweezy's case, tried by New Hampshire Attorney General, went all the way to the Supreme Court and became a seminal case on freedom of speech when the Court ruled in his favor.^[1][3]

Viewpoint[link]

In 2004, Monthly Review editor John Bellamy Foster told the New York Times, "The Monthly Review was attractive to people who were leaving the Communist Party and other sectarian groups. It was and is Marxist, but did not hew to the party line or get into sectarian struggles."^[1] Monthly Review has been a consistent voice for socialism and against American imperialism. The editors of Monthly Review have been prominent Marxist academics, economists and authors. They have been independent and not aligned with a particular existing revolutionary movement or political organization. Many of its articles have been written by academics, journalists and authors, including W. E. B. Du Bois, Paul A. Baran, Jean-Paul Sartre, Che Guevara, Joan Robinson, Tariq Ali, Grace Lee Boggs, Noam Chomsky, Bernardine Dohrn, Mumia Abu-Jamal, Marilyn Buck, Doug Henwood, Michael Klare, James Petras, Frances Fox Piven, and Adrienne Rich.^[2]

Aijaz Ahmad has said about Monthly Review: "It seems to me that in the postwar United States Monthly Review has been the only institution of the Left which provides a full-fledged narrative of the world."^[4]

Monthly Review Press, an allied endeavor, has published many political books, such as Fanshen by William Hinton, Labour and Monopoly Capital by Harry Braverman, The Development of Underdevelopment by Andre Gunder Frank, Unequal Development by Samir Amin, The Arabs in Israel by Sabri Jiryis and the English translation of Open Veins of Latin America, by Eduardo Galeano.

Grace Lee (Korean: 이경희; born Lee Kyung Hee) is a Korean television host and radio disc jockey working in the Philippines. She is the third Korean expatriate to appear prominently in Philippine television, after Sandara Park, Ryan Bang and her fellow DJs Sam Oh and Jinri Park.^[1] She can speak Tagalog and English in addition to her native Korean.^[2]

Early life[link]

Lee was born and raised in Seoul, but moved to the Philippines at the age of 10 because of her father's business, which involved importing Korean cars. She studied from second grade to senior high school at St. Paul College in Pasig City and graduated from Ateneo de Manila University, where she obtained her Communication Arts degree.^[2] Before becoming a TV host, she has been hosting events for Korean-Filipino communities as well as being an official interpreter for Malacañang.

Lee planned on becoming a journalist. She sent her résumé to major television studios in the Philippines and received a callback from GMA Network.^[2] She landed her first Philippine TV hosting job in March 2007 as a segment host on Q Network’s lifestyle-magazine show "The Sweet Life". Among her first assignments include featuring life in Korea where she gets to wear traditional female garb as well as interviewing prominent Korean celebrities such as Yoon Se Ah of Lovers in Prague and King Sejong the Great drama series.^[3][4]

She recently joined Magic 89.9's morning radio show Good Times With Mo with Mo Twister and Mojo Jojo as a replacement for Andi-9.^[2] Lee is also a Manila correspondent for Yonhap Television News in Korea, as well as teaches at the Manila New Life Church's Sunday school for preschool students and takes part in various outreach programs.^[3]

Grace Lee hosted a cooking reality show, "Eateria" that aired every Sunday mornings on GMA Network. Lee also hosted "Diz Iz It" that aired 6 days a week on GMA.

She is now a guest segment anchor both for Balitanghali on GMA News TV on weekdays, and 24 Oras Weekend Edition on Saturdays on GMA Network.

She is currently in a relationship with the president of the Philippines, Benigno Aquino III. She admitted to the relationship on her show stating in response to the presidents claim of their relationship, "what the president said is true.". ^[5] On March 6, 2012, Grace Lee reported in a formal and genial letter, stating that her time has come to exit. DJ Mo puts the blame on himself, saying that he was indirectly the cause for the recent breakdown of the show. Currently, they are now looking for a replacement. Grace Lee made her last appearance on THURSDAY, March 8, 2012. She has stated in the show that prior to common rumours, Grace Lee's decisions to leave the show had nothing to do with the President. In fact, Grace Lee only told PNoy during Wednesday. Surprisingly, Grace Lee was already planning on leaving the show last year. It has been said that she had been emotionally struggling, but although she will quit the show, she will still be part of the Magic 89.9 family

John Bellamy Foster (born August 19, 1953) is a professor of sociology at the University of Oregon and also editor of Monthly Review, an independent socialist magazine. His writings have focused on political economy, environmental sociology, and Marxist theory. He has written several books, including: The Great Financial Crisis: Causes and Consequences and What Every Environmentalist Needs to Know about Capitalism (both with Fred Magdoff), The Ecological Rift and Critique of Intelligent Design: Materialism versus Creationism from Antiquity to the Present (both with Brett Clark and Richard York), and The Ecological Revolution: Making Peace with the Planet.

Beginnings and Academic Career[link]

Foster was already active in the anti-war and environmental movements before enrolling at Evergreen State College in 1971, focusing on the study of economics in response to the unfolding crisis in the capitalist economy and US involvement with the coup in Chile that replaced the popularly elected pro-USSR Socialist government of Salvador Allende. It was at Evergreen that he met Robert W. McChesney, who introduced him to Monthly Review and the work of Paul M. Sweezy and Harry Magdoff.

In 1976 Foster moved to Canada and entered the political science graduate program at York University in Toronto, where he studied with Neal Wood, Ellen Meiksins Wood, Gabriel Kolko, Robert Cox, and Robert Albritton, among other noted critical thinkers. After submitting a copy of his 1979 paper, The United States and Monopoly Capital: The Issue of Excess Capacity, to Paul Sweezy of Monthly Review, the two struck up a lifelong correspondence and eventual collaboration. Over the next few years, Foster published in journals such as The Quarterly Journal of Economics and Science & Society, and, in 1986, published The Theory of Monopoly Capitalism: An Elaboration of Marxian Political Economy, based on his Ph.D. dissertation.

Foster was hired in 1985 as a Visiting Member of the Faculty at The Evergreen State College. One year later he took a position as assistant professor of sociology at the University of Oregon, and became a full professor of sociology in 2000. He teaches there today and lives with his wife and two children in Eugene.

Foster published his first article for Monthly Review, “Is Monopoly Capital an Illusion?”, while in graduate school in 1981. He became a director of the Monthly Review Foundation Board and a member of the Monthly Review editorial committee in 1989. Along with Robert McChesney, who had since their days at Evergreen College become a leading scholar of the political economy of the media, Foster joined Paul Sweezy and Harry Magdoff as a co-editor of Monthly Review in 2000. Two years later, he became president of the Monthly Review Foundation.

After Paul Sweezy’s death in 2004, Robert McChesney’s resignation as co-editor (while remaining on the board), and Harry Magdoff’s death in 2006, Foster was left as sole editor of the magazine.

Foster’s initial research centered on Marxian political economy and theories of capitalist development, with a focus on Paul Sweezy and Paul Baran’s theory of monopoly capital. In the late 1980s, Foster turned toward issues of ecology. He focused on the relationship between the global environmental crisis and the crisis in the capitalist economy, while stressing the imperative for a sustainable, socialist alternative. During this period he published The Vulnerable Planet: A Short Economic History of the Environment; Marx’s Ecology: Materialism and Nature, which received the book award from the Marxist section of the American Sociological Association; and Ecology Against Capitalism, as well as numerous articles.

As editor of Monthly Review, Foster returned to his earlier work on the political economy of capitalism, but with a renewed focus on the role of U.S. foreign policy following September 2001. His 2006 book Naked Imperialism, along with frequent editorials in the pages of Monthly Review, attempted to account for the growing U.S. military role in the world and the shift toward a more visible, aggressive global projection. Additionally, Foster has worked to expand Sweezy and Baran’s theory of monopoly capital in light of the current financially-led phase of capitalism, which he terms “monopoly-finance Capital.” In this context he has written several articles for Monthly Review on the financialization of capitalism and financial crisis of 2007-08.

Critique of Intelligent Design, Foster’s book co-authored with Brett Clark and Richard York, is a continuation of his research on materialist philosophy and the relationship between ancient Greek philosopher Epicurus and Karl Marx. Drawing on his ecological work, particularly Marx’s Ecology, Foster defends historical materialism as fundamental to a rational, scientific worldview, against proponents of Intelligent Design and other anti-materialist, superstitious ideologies.

The Great Financial Crisis: Causes and Consequences, written with Fred Magdoff, explores the financial crisis which began in the fall of 2008 and has come to affect the entire world economy. In it, he argues that the current crisis must be understood in the context of a broader crisis of monopoly-finance capitalism, one that has its roots in the tendency toward stagnation in mature capitalist economies. This tendency toward stagnation reduces investment opportunities in the "real" productive economy, thus driving capital to seek other sources of profit—particularly, since the 1980s, through financialization. And yet, far from providing a solution, the construction of a "casino" economy built on speculation and increasingly complex financial mechanisms is collapsing under the weight of its own contradictions, and the underlying problem—the crisis in the productive economy—is becoming more and more apparent. The only viable solution, Foster argues, is the economic remedy advocated in The Communist Manifesto proposed by Karl Marx in 1848: a radical restructuring of the entire economy to meet the needs of the vast majority, a reorientation toward production for social use as opposed to private gain.

The Ecological Revolution: Making Peace with the Planet, is a collection focusing on the ecological crisis, and includes essays on global warming, peak oil, species extinction, world water shortages, global hunger, alternative energy sources, sustainable development, and environmental justice. Foster argues that we have reached a turning point in human relations with the earth, and that any attempt to solve our problems merely by technological, industrial or free market means, divorced from fundamental social relations, cannot succeed.^[1] This was followed by The Ecological Rift: Capitalism's War on the Earth, co-authored by Brett Clark and Richard York, and, with Fred Magdoff, What Every Environmentalist Needs to Know about Capitalism, a basic introductory primer on the political economy of the ecological crisis that was abridged and linguistically simplified in an attempt to make it more accessible to the majority of the population who still often lack proper intellectual references and training.

Robert Ovetz, Ph.D. is an adjunct instructor of social science at two San Francisco Bay Area community colleges, a published writer and musician.

Ovetz has appeared on CNN, NPR, Air America radio and numerous newspapers and magazines around the world including the San Francisco Chronicle, San Francisco Business Times, Post-Courier (Papua New Guinea), Orlando Sentinel, Kyodo News (Japan), UPI, Reuters, Canberra Times (Australia), Bloomberg, The Ecologist (UK), Z Magazine, and the BBC. His report "The Bottom Line: An Investigation of the Economic, Cultural and Social Costs of Industrial Longline Fishing in the Pacific and the Benefits of Sustainable Use Marine Protected Areas" was published by the United Nations in 2005.

His writings have also been published in numerous academic journals including Capital & Class, Common Sense, Environmental Practice, Critical Sociology, California Sociology, Journal of Environmental Education, New Solutions: A Journal of Environmental and Occupational Health Policy, and Marine Policy. He also worked as an editor for Kluwer Law International and co-edited the book Reforming the International Financial System (Forum on Debt and Development: The Netherlands, 2000). Ocean Conservationist[link]

Until recently, Ovetz worked extensively as a marine conservation advocate. He was the Executive Director of the marine conservation non-governmental organization Seaflow, International Campaigns Director with Humane Society International, and the International Campaign Coordinator with the Sea Turtle Restoration Project.^[1] With the last NGO Ovetz achieved the first ever protections for sea turtles at the United Nations in 2005.

In 1994, Ovetz was the first English-speaking journalist to break the story of the Zapatista uprising in Chiapas, Mexico and interviewed Subcommandante Marcos as a freelance reporter for CNN. His interview is cited in the book Subcommander Marcos: The Man and the Mask (Duke University Press: Durham and London, 2007).

Ovetz was awarded the Northern California Society of Professional Journalists Freedom of Information James Madison Award in 2007 for his efforts to defend his student's magazine Mute/Off which was censored by the Art Institute of California-San Francisco and he was fired after teaching at the college for 3 years.

Born in New York City, he attended the University of Texas at Austin where he received his BA, MA and PhD. His father, Arye Ovetz, was a Holocaust survivor from Romania whose was imprisoned for several years s a young boy in a forced labor camp by the Romanian fascist government in the 1940s.

Musician and Filmmaking career[link]

Ovetz is also a musician and has released a number of records and CDs with his former band ultrasound (autonomy recordings, Drone Records, Ba Da Bing! and Time Lag Records). He also filmed and edited the short documentary film "Goniff Romania" about his father's first and only return to Romania, the country of his birth, after an absence of nearly 50 years and the struggle to recovered the lost history of the forced labor camps. The film is available in the collections of Holocaust museums around the world.
