Malek Jandali Syrian Composer Ugarit Music
Syrian composer and pianist Malek Jandali is first Arab composer to arrange world's oldest music notation: 'Syria is the birthplace of alphabet, music and harmony.' Perhaps it was inevitable that Syrian composer and pianist Malek Jandali would one day find himself in Ugarit, Syria, creating new music for the world out of the world's oldest.

The clay tablets contain a hymn to the moon god's wife, Nikkal. Lattakia and the lost city of Ugarit
A travel video on Lattakia and Ugarit, a nearly 4000-years-old city now considered the birthplace of the alphabet. We know a fair bit about Ugarit from its surviving stashes of clay tablets, written in this first alphabet. One tablet even has this timeless reminder to men: 'Do not tell your wife where you hide your money.'

A Hurrian Cult Song from Ancient Ugarit
The most ancient example of written song. A hymn to Nikkal, wife of the moon god. The text is written upon a fragmented tablet and, therefore, is incomplete. The hymn has four stanzas, each with a refrain. Stanzas 1 and 4 are imitation, and stanzas 2 and 3 are identical musically. The singer is accompanied by a lyra. The lyra harmony is predominantly in thirds and sixths, a few fourths, and one fifth. There are startling similarities between the Babylonian principles of music theory and those used by ancient Greeks. Moreover, the Babylonian principles antedate the Greek ones by more than a millenium. The Babylonians seem to have used music exclusively in connection with religious observances and festivals. The names of lyra/kithara strings and musical pitches were related to their cult deities and to the planets in a cosmology similar to Greek philosophers' "harmony of the spheres."

The "El" of Ugarit and the Hebrew Bible
Brilliant Article by Damien F. Mackey The "Toledoths" of Genesis: www.specialtyinterests.net "As one discovers from reading Wiseman, tremendous instruction can be gained from studying the pattern of the Divine names used according to the context of each successive Toledoth history. " GOD OF THE UDDER: ANOTHER LOOK AT EL SHADDAI www.keithmassey.com The "breasted god" Stone suggests that Shaddai is derived from the similar word, shad, which the Bible translates, "breast." "Victor P. Hamilton connects the word shad to the blessing of fertility and progeny in this verse (Gen. 49:25).[39] Stone connects the name, Shaddai with shad, and suggests that "Shaddai signifies one who nourishes, supplies and satisfies." www.xenos.org The title "El" is a common name for god: "By the way, the connection of Jacob with El is sometimes asserted on the basis of Jacobís other name, ìIsrael,î where ìElî is the last part of the name. Again, ìElî is a title for god that is often used in other personal names in Israel (such as ìSamuelî) and in neighboring nations. So in the Ammonite collection of personal names more than 150 contain the name ìElî, but most would affirm that the chief god of Ammon was Milkom, and that ìElî was a title of Milkom. One must be very careful about drawing lots of conclusions from a word that can be a title for any god in the West Semitic world." www.reasonablefaith.org Canaanite religion was unlike the faith of the Israelites: "As the myths of ancient Ugarit indicate ...

The Hymn to Nikkal .:. 𐎐𐎋𐎍 .:. (Hurrian 12th century BCE - Ugarit)
The Hurrian Hymn to Nikkal from 12th century BCE Ugarit (Ras Shamra) in Syria is currently the oldest piece of annotated music known to history being well over 3,200 years old.
It dates from between 1400 and 1200 BCE and was discovered in the libraries of the city of Ugarit.
Although it was written in Ugaritic cuneiform it is actually in Hurrian rather than a West Semitic dialect such as Akkadian, Canaanite, Amorite, Aramaic, or proto-Hebrew.
This is a hymn to the Great Goddess Nikkal (Nikkalu 𐎐𐎋𐎍 in Ugaritic) composed by a sacred scribe by the name of Hammurapi.
It addition to the words of the prayer there are also instructions for the tuning of the kinnor (lyre) and these have been the focus of several studies by palaeo-musicologists.
The version of the hymn which was recorded by Tiger Shade studios in the UK is based on the work of Professor Anne Kilmer and Professor Theo Krispijn.
The musical arrangement is by Declann Flynn (Al-pha-X) and the beautiful voice is courtesy of Ali Eve Cudby.
You can listen to a short talk by Professor Theo Krispijn which contains his translation of the text on the MySpace page of Tiger Shade which is at :
http://www.myspace.com/tigershaderecordings
Here you will also find the version restored by Declann Flynn (Al-pha-X) and sung by Ali Eve Cudby.
There is also some information about the work of Professor Anne Kilmer on the Bella Roma music site :
http://www.bellaromamusic.com/stories/hurrianmoonrise/moonrisepage.html
Although Professor Kilmer admits that portions of the Hurrian text are quite difficult to translate there is one line of the song that is the exception to this:
According to Kilmer "The meaning of one phrase in the text is quite clear:
"wesal tatib tisiya"
means "Thou (the Goddess), lovest them in (Thy) heart..."

:: Resumen
