Girish Karnad's attack on 'anti-Muslim' VS Naipaul
A war of words has broken out between one of India's greatest playwrights, Girish Karnad, and vocal supporters of the man who is often described as a lion of English writing, VS Naipaul. This after Girish Karnad spoke at the Mumbai literature festival and lambasted Mr Naipaul who received a lifetime achievement for his antipathy towards the Indian Muslim - a verbal critique which has touched on many raw nerves.

Girish Karnad takes on nobel laureate VS Naipaul
While debate is central to any literary event, playwright Girish Karnad used the event's platform to not just question nobel laureate VS Naipaul's views, but also the lifetime achievement award conferred on him has sparked a massive fight polarising the literary world. Here is a report on exactly how that controversy erupted -- and how it has played out since.

VS Naipaul is tone-deaf and anti-Muslim, says Girish Karnad
Actor and playwright Girish Karnad took on Nobel laureate and India-origin author VS Naipual at the Mumbai Literature Festival calling him "tone-deaf". "Mr Naipaul has written three books on India, three very big books and if you read them you will find that not one of them contains any reference to music. He has gone through the whole of India without responding to Indian music. Now, I think that this only means that he is tone deaf. That's my reading of the situation but then there's no reason why he shouldn't be tone deaf," he said. Karnad also accused him of being "anti-Muslim" by saying that "he does not know how Muslims have contributed to the Indian history". "He has no music and therefore no conception of how the Muslims contributed to our history," he added.

I have no regrets for publicly targeting VS Naipaul: Girish Karnad
Playwright Girish Karnad has strongly defended his attack on VS Naipaul saying he has no regrets for publicly targeting the eminent writer. Karnad also went on to say that he didn't mind being called a professional secularist but Naipul had no right to abuse Muslims. "I waited for this opportunity. I regret that he made the statement at this festival. An attack on Muslims annoys me. Naipul is ignorant about India," said Karnad while speaking to CNN-IBN Deputy Editor Sagarika Ghose.

This was a presentation I did on V.S. Naipaul's A HOUSE FOR MR. BISWAS at a conference in Bergen, Norway. Not shown is the academic who asked me whether or not Naipaul was really "British enough" to be taken seriously as a critic of British imperialism. The mind boggles sometimes...

This little video is the result of a class I took recently. We were asked to use video to illustrate a quote relating to London. I chose the following quote by author V. S. Naipaul.
"I came to London. It had become the center of my world and I had worked hard to come to it. And I was lost."

Imraan Coovadia on 'Lolita' 1 April 2010
Written by Vladimir Nabokov, Lolita was first published in Paris in 1955. It is one of the best-known and most controversial books of 20th Century literature. Coovadia says: “I'll be talking about the Lolita problem. How do we respond to a book which is a first person narrative by a man who is trying to seduce a 12 year old girl after marrying her mother? Nabokov promises us readers "bliss"? Well, what sort of bliss? Is there a "lesson" in reading Lolita and why has Nabokov described it as the most moral of his novels?”
Imraan Coovadia is an Associate Professor in UCT’s English Department. He has written many stories, essays and book reviews, as well as three novels--The Wedding, Green-Eyed Thieves, and, in 2009, High Low In-Between. Coovadia has worked extensively on Adam Smith, George Eliot, and V.S. Naipaul. He is currently studying the Russian-American writer Vladimir Nabokov, author of Lolita.

The Empire Writes Back
English education was introduced in India by the British as part of their policy to train a class of Indian clerks. Early creative writing in English, while influenced by 19th century British novels, was already breaking literary conventions. However, early writers like Raja Rao struggled with trying to express in "a language that is not one's own, the spirit that is one's own." It is not until Salman Rushdie wrote 'Midnight's Children' (1981) that Indian writing in English could claim for itself a voice and a spirit completely unique and different. Writers like Amitav Ghosh, Allan Sealy, Vikram Seth, VS Naipaul, Upamanyu Chatterjee, Kiran Desai, Arundhati Roy are only a few outstanding examples of Indian writers in English. 'The Empire Writes Back' traces the history of Indian writing in English from the early part of the 20th century till the late 1990s.
