What's it like working as a CSIRO researcher?
The CSIRO aims to deliver great science and innovative solutions for industry, society and the environment. We know It's not enough just to have a great idea. At CSIRO Earth Science & Resource Engineering's Australian Resources Research Centre, we want to have an impact, solve problems and make a difference. Great science is our foundation. And getting it out there's our aim.

Pollen under the microscope
There's no such thing as a free lunch. Birds, bees and other animals visiting flowers for food are helping plants reproduce by spreading pollen around. Discover how beautiful pollen looks up close and why it's important to study pollen and pollinators. Check out an amazing new microscope owned by CSIRO and the Atlas of Living Australia that helps palynologists (pollen scientists) automatically identify pollen to speed up biodiversity research and discover new species. The 'Classifynder' microscope, developed and built by Massey University in New Zealand, is the world's first automated pollen microscope. It's one of a growing number of imaging systems for taxonomists and researchers built by specialists in image analysis, pattern recognition, machine learning and artificial intelligence. The connections between ocean and atmosphere
The Southern Ocean is a sponge for carbon dioxide. Here, Australian oceanographer and Southern Ocean specialist Steve Rintoul explains how the ocean absorbs CO2. A scientist at CSIRO and the Antarctic Climate & Ecosystems Cooperative Research centre, he was interviewed in January, 2012 aboard the Australian Government's Antarctic re-supply vessel, Aurora Australis by PhD student Nick Roden. CSIRO's smart mini-meters
Submitted in response to pitch request at anthillonline.com A new web-based smart metering system has been developed by CSIRO to enable householders, small businesses and electricity retailers to remotely control energy use over a broadband internet connection. The aim is to help small scale energy users cut energy use, costs and carbon emissions. In this video, shot at the 2010 CeBIT trade fair in Sydney, CSIRO's Dr Martin de Groot explains how the technology works. He is joined by Tim Warren, Director of SaturnSouth, a Tasmanian company that has designed and built the hardware to CSIRO's specifications. CSIRO models catastrophic flooding
What happens when 3.12 billion cubic meters of water suddenly comes crashing down from a dam towards a town below? CSIRO computational scientists are modelling the hypothetical collapse of the massive Geheyan dam in China. Check out this video to see how they did it and what the dam break looks like.

Why engineers enjoy working at CSIRO
CSIRO's purpose is to deliver great science and innovative solutions for industry, society and the environment by igniting the creative spirit of our people. People are at the centre of everything we do. We work to create the right environment to amplify our talent. We take a Team Australia approach. It is not enough just to have a great idea; we must have impact, solve problems and make a difference. We take a triple bottom line focus in our activities, balancing between commerce and the public good. Great science is our foundation. Getting it out there is our aim. www.csiro.au

CSIRO's latest computer cluster gets its grunt from games
Technology designed to blast aliens in computer games is part of the latest GPU (graphic processing unit) computer cluster that will process CSIRO research data thousands of times faster and more efficiently than a desktop PC could. GPUs aren't just useful for image data but are good for many big science challenges processing petabytes of data and more very quickly. Speeds of 30 to 70 times faster than CPUs are common and using GPUs to analyse complex research data is becoming a global trend in computing. CSIRO's GPU cluster will be used for research in advanced materials, cloud computing, data and visualisation tools, genetics and more, including: - figuring out where tiny fragments of genetic code sit on a genome - 3D reconstruction of medical images from the Australian Synchrotron - modelling the interactions between nutrients and plankton in the oceans. www.csiro.au

CSIRO Megatrends - Our Future World
Dr Stefan Hajkowicz gives a rundown on the CSIRO Global Foresight Project, which cannily identifies socio-economic and environmental trends affecting the way we live and the way we might have to learn to live in the future. Dr Hajkowicz and Dr James Moody have distilled the future thinking of 40 CSIRO scientists and business development staff on key global megatrends. They foresee a future characterised by: 1. MORE FROM LESS: a world of limited resources 2. A PERSONAL TOUCH: personalisation of products and services 3. DIVERGENT DEMOGRAPHICS: older, hungrier, more demanding societies 4. ON THE MOVE: urbanisation and increased mobility 5. iWORLD: convergence of the digital and natural worlds All this will play out against background social, economic and environmental risks. These include global asset price collapse, a slowing Chinese economy, energy costs, extreme weather, pandemics, biodiversity loss, terrorism and nanotechnology risks. Fasten your seatbelts and find out more! For more information check out: Our Future World -- full report: www.csiro.au Podcasts: www.csiro.au www.csiro.au ABC Big Ideas: www.abc.net.au

Partners in space: CSIRO and NASA celebrate its 50th anniversary
The 26th of February 2010 marks the 50th anniversary of CSIRO's partnership with NASA in solar system exploration. Learn more about our historic collaboration in this video. The milestone in international cooperation marks the completion of the first half century of treaty level partnership in space tracking between CSIRO and NASA. Since the early 1960s NASA has contracted CSIRO radio telescopes to augment its network of tracking stations for particular missions as part of its Deep Space Network (DSN). CSIRO manages the Canberra Deep Space Communications Complex (CDSCC), one of three DSN stations around the world used for communicating with NASA's spacecraft. In this video, key personnel from CSIRO and NASA reflect on the accomplishments of the CDSCC and the DSN, which is founded primarily on its people and the strength of international collaboration stretching back to the beginning of space exploration. CSIRO and Intellectual Property
This video presents a range of innovations based on intellectual property (IP) developed at CSIRO and with collaborators. CSIRO takes the management of its IP seriously. Effective management of IP is important to achieve impact from CSIRO science for the benefit of industry, community and the environment. It is also essential to CSIRO forming productive collaborations. For more information - www.csiro.au This video was produced by CSIRO Publishing - www.publish.csiro.au
