Metropolitan Cork (Irish: ''Uirbeach Chorcaí'') refers to the city of Cork, Ireland, its suburbs and the satellite towns that feed into it. The term is used in the ''Cork Area Strategic Plan'' to refer to the area whose labour and property market is shared with the city. The plan declares that it is envisaged as an area with "an integrated transport system, and the social, cultural and educational facilities of a modern European city.". Metropolitan Cork is the core employment hub of the Greater Cork area.

In addition to the city of Cork, it includes the towns of Ballincollig, Blarney, Carrigaline, Carrigtwohill, Cobh, Glanmire, Glounthaune, Midleton, Rochestown, Monkstown, Passage West and Ringaskiddy .

Barbara K. Roberts (born on December 21, 1936) is an American politician from the state of Oregon. A native of the state, she served as the 34th Governor of Oregon from 1991 to 1995. She is the first and, to date, only woman to be elected to that office. (She wasn't the first woman to function as governor; Carolyn B. Shelton served as acting governor for 49 hours in 1909, but Shelton was not elected to the post. ) A Democrat, Roberts was also the first woman to serve as majority leader in the Oregon House of Representatives. She also won two terms as Oregon Secretary of State and served in local and county government in Portland. Roberts was married to Oregon State Senator Frank Roberts. Since February 2011, she has been serving on the council of Metro, the regional government in the Portland metropolitan area.

Early life

Roberts was born on December 21, 1936, in Corvallis, Oregon, and is a fourth generation Oregonian. She grew up in the Willamette Valley in Sheridan, where she graduated from Sheridan High School. She attended Portland State University from 1961 to 1964 and, later, the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University and Marylhurst University.

Political career

Roberts became involved in public service as an advocate for handicapped children. She became an unpaid lobbyist in 1969, spurred by concerns for her autistic son, Mike. Roberts served on the Parkrose School Board and the Mount Hood Community College Board. After she married Senator Frank Roberts in 1974, who became her political mentor, she was appointed to finish the term of a Multnomah County Commissioner.

Barbara Roberts was elected to the Oregon House of Representatives in 1981. She was Oregon's first female House Majority Leader from 1983 to 1984.

Secretary of State

In 1984, Roberts was elected as Oregon Secretary of State, the first Democrat elected to that post in over 100 years. She was re-elected in 1988. Her significant achievements as Secretary of State include election reform legislation, the construction of a new state archives building, and broader audit powers for the Secretary of State. The Portland Gay Men's Chorus sang at her inauguration. It is widely believed that this was the first time that a gay identified chorus sang for the inauguration of a statewide elected official of any state.

Governor

Roberts ran unopposed in the Democratic Gubernatorial primary in 1990. She defeated Republican Attorney General David B. Frohnmayer and independent Al Mobley in the November 1990 General Election, succeeding Neil Goldschmidt as Governor of Oregon. During that same election, voters passed Ballot Measure 5, which established constitutional limits on property tax rates.

During her term as Governor, Roberts worked with the Clinton administration to secure federal waivers and funding for the Oregon Health Plan. She also helped to increase the number of children in the Head Start Program, secured financing for additional units of affordable housing, and developed programs to help move Oregonians from welfare to the workplace. The Roberts administration was known for its strong support of gay rights and appointed women to positions in state government. Her husband, Frank Roberts, died in 1993 from prostate cancer while she was still governor. After his death, Barbara Roberts wrote the book ''Death Without Denial Grief Without Apology: A Guide for Facing Death and Loss''.

There were several factors that were responsible for Roberts' decision not to seek re-election in 1994. They included her low approval rating with the voters, as well as voters' refusal to pass a measure to enact a sales tax which would have funded the Oregon Health Plan. As a result of the failed sales tax measure, Roberts was forced to break her campaign promise not to cut spending.

Later life and family

Soon after she left office, Roberts accepted a position at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University as director of the Harvard Program for Senior Executives in State and Local Government and later as a senior fellow to the Women and Public Policy Program. In 1998, Roberts joined Portland State University's Hatfield School of Government's Executive Leadership Institute as Associate Director of Leadership Development.

Roberts has continued community service, sitting on the board of trustees for several major nonprofit organizations, including the Oregon Hospice Association, the Human Rights Campaign, and the advisory council of Oregon’s Compassion in Dying. She has also maintained an active public speaking career, addressing issues of death and grieving, leadership, women in politics, and environmental stewardship. Roberts has two sons, Mark and Mike.

Roberts High School in Salem, Oregon, was named after her in 1996.

Return to government service

In early 2011, Roberts returned to government service, as a member of the six-person Metro council, the Portland metropolitan area's elected regional government, after Robert Liberty resigned in January from his position as councillor representing Metro district 6. Roberts was appointed to the council in February, to fill the remainder (about 22 months) of Liberty's four-year term, by a vote of the council. Although Metro council positions are publicly elected offices, an election is not required when filling a council vacancy in mid-term. She was sworn in on February 24, 2011. Metro district 6 includes portions of Northeast, Southeast and Southwest Portland. She has said she will not be a candidate for the position when it next comes due for election, in May 2012, and the term expires at the end of 2012.

Glen Hansard (born 21 April 1970 in Dublin, Ireland) is the Academy Award–winning principal songwriter and vocalist/guitarist for Irish group The Frames and one half of folk rock duo, The Swell Season. He is also known for his acting, having appeared in the BAFTA winning film ''The Commitments'', as well as starring in the film ''Once''.

His song "Falling Slowly" from ''Once'', co-written with Markéta Irglová, won the Academy-Award for Best Original Song in 2007, and earned him ten other major nominations or awards between 2007 and 2008.

Career

Hansard quit school at age 13 to begin busking on local Dublin streets. He formed The Frames in 1990, and they've been staples of the Irish music scene ever since. Their first album, ''Another Love Song'', was released on Island Records in 1991, and their most recent, ''The Cost'', was released in 2006.

Hansard first came to international attention as guitar player Outspan Foster in the 1991 Alan Parker film ''The Commitments'', after attending the New York Film Academy School of Acting. He has often stated that he regretted taking the role, because he felt it distracted him from his music career.

In 2003, he presented the television programme ''Other Voices: Songs from a Room'', which showcased Irish music talent on RTÉ. On 22 April 2006, he released his first album without The Frames, ''The Swell Season'', on Overcoat Recordings in collaboration with Czech singer and multi-instrumentalist Markéta Irglová, Marja Tuhkanen from Finland on violin and viola, and Bertrand Galen from France on cello. Hansard also spent part of 2006 in front of the cameras for a music-infused Irish film ''Once'', in which Hansard plays a Dublin busker, and Irglová an immigrant street vendor. The film had its American premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in 2007 and received the Festival's World Cinema Audience Award. During the promotional tour, he and Irglová began dating. Said Hansard about his relationship with Irglova: "I had been falling in love with her for a long time, but I kept telling myself she's just a kid". One of the songs they wrote together for the film ("Falling Slowly") won an Oscar for Best Song in February 2008. Hansard became the first Irish-born person to win in that category. Hansard and Irglová also recorded a version of Bob Dylan's "You Ain't Goin' Nowhere" for the film ''I'm Not There'' in 2007. In 2009, Hansard said that he and Irglova were no longer romantically linked, and that they are now "good friends".

Aside from his projects with The Frames and Irglová, Hansard also took part as a member of the band on the 2006 Oxfam charity album, ''The Cake Sale''. In addition, Hansard has recorded a few cover songs, both alone and with band member Colm Mac Con Iomaire, for the Today FM discs ''Even Better than the Real Thing''. Songs that he has recorded include Justin Timberlake's "Cry Me a River" on ''Vol. 1'' and Britney Spears' "Everytime" on ''Vol. 2''.

Outside music, he appeared on a ''Simpsons'' episode as a street musician in Ireland. A new album of original songs recorded as The Swell Season with Markéta Irglová and entitled ''Strict Joy'' was released on October 27, 2009 on the ANTI- record label.

On August 14, 2009, Hansard sang "Amazing Grace" at the funeral of Eunice Kennedy Shriver. In December 2009, Glen was joined by Bono, Damien Rice and other Irish musicians on Grafton Street in Dublin, to busk in aid of the Simon Community. In January 2010, Glen and fellow musician Mark Geary auctioned off a house concert on eBay in aid of Haitian relief after the catastrophic earthquake left the country in dire need of assistance. The pair would travel anywhere within a 2 hour drive of Dublin and play a private gig in the highest bidder's house. In the end the two musicians played for the highest bidder and a selection of other fans in a central Dublin cafe. The auction raised in the region of €6,000 (six thousand euro) for charity.

From June 15 to July 15, 2011, he will join Eddie Vedder on his upcoming American solo tour in support of Vedder's forthcoming solo album, ''Ukulele Songs.''

Hansard plays a Takamine acoustic guitar, which is named "The Horse".

Hansard has remarked about his musical influences: ''"In my house, when I was a kid, there was the holy trinity, which was Leonard Cohen, Van Morrison and Bob Dylan with Bob sitting center."'' Hansard and The Frames toured as the support act for Bob Dylan in Australia and New Zealand in August 2007 and Hansard often performs Van Morrison's songs in concert. Two such songs include "Into the Mystic", and "And the Healing Has Begun" which were included on the collector's edition of the soundtrack for the film ''Once''.

The Cab is an American rock band from Las Vegas, Nevada. Their debut album, ''Whisper War'', was released on April 29, 2008. They have been called "The Band You Need to Know 2008" by ''Alternative Press'' magazine. They were also featured in the '100 Bands You Need To Know in 2010' by the magazine and were one of the three bands featured on the cover page, along with Never Shout Never and Hey Monday. Their second album ''Symphony Soldier'' was released on August 23, 2011, with its first single "Bad" released to iTunes July 11, 2011 and announced by the band on July 18. The Cab funded the entire album by themselves and left their Fueled By Ramen//Decaydance label, self-releasing ''Symphony Soldier''. ''AbsolutePunk'' gave an extremely positive review with a rating of 95%, calling the album a "masterpiece." The pre-orders featured eleven packages, ranging from $10 to $9,999 and are now available as packages on the band's webstore. ''Symphony Soldier'' is digitally available on iTunes, and only available as physical CDs from the band's webstore.

Biography

Band members Alex DeLeon and Cash Colligan first began playing music together at Liberty High School (Henderson, Nevada) and recorded demos as a duo which they put up on their MySpace page. At this time, future guitarist Ian Crawford went to school in Auburn, WA and started out playing his guitar in talent shows and getting them put on YouTube. DeLeon asked drummer Alex Johnson, who was playing in a local hardcore band, to join The Cab. In late 2005, it became a full band with guitarist Paul Garcia, guitar/pianist Alex Marshall, and drummer Alex Johnson, playing its first show at The Alley in Las Vegas. The band signed to local label Olympus Records in January 2006 but released no material. After giving a demo to Spencer Smith and Jon Walker of Panic! at the Disco at a Cobra Starship/Boys Like Girls/Cartel show, Smith helped them sign to Decaydance Records in May 2007. Shortly after this, the band's members graduated from high school. During this time they decided to replace Garcia with Ian Crawford, who moved from Washington to join the band.

''Blender'' named them #420 on their Top 100 Hot Report in September 2007, before they released any official material. The group has toured with Panic! at the Disco, We the Kings, Metro Station, Cobra Starship, There For Tomorrow, Charlotte Sometimes, Forever the Sickest Kids, Dashboard Confessional, Plain White Tees, The Hush Sound, and others. In February 2008, their touring van turned over in Wisconsin, but none of the members were seriously injured, and they only missed one tour date. In March 2008, the band played SXSW.

Their Matt Squire-produced first album, ''Whisper War'', was released on April 29, 2008, featuring Brendon Urie of Panic! At The Disco and Patrick Stump of Fall Out Boy on "One of Those Nights," co-written by Stump and the first single from the CD. The video for "One of Those Nights" features members of both Panic! at the Disco and Pete Wentz and Patrick Stump of Fall Out Boy. By February 15, 2008, the featured song from the album, "I'll Run", received over 300,000 hits on the band's MySpace page. On October 30, their third single, "Bounce", was revealed in a new music video on the Fueled by Ramen page on YouTube. This song peaked at #69 on the defunct US ''Billboard'' Pop 100 chart.

On May 7, 2008, ''Whisper War'' debuted on the US ''Billboard'' 200 at #108, placing it at #1 on the ''Billboard'' Heatseekers Albums chart for new and developing artists.

The Cab began the Dance Across the Country Tour with The Hush Sound, Steel Train and The Morning Light on July 7 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The "Why So Serious? Tour" began in September with support from This Providence, Hey Monday and A Rocket to the Moon. In October, they also joined Panic! at the Disco, Dashboard Confessional, and the Plain White T's on the ''Rock Band'' Live tour.

Their songs "Bounce" and "One of Those Nights" are featured as downloadable tracks in ''Rock Band 2'', although "One of Those Nights" is an alternate version than that of the one on "Whisper War".

The Cab has appeared on ''Punk Goes Pop 2'', covering Rihanna's "Disturbia". In February and March 2009 the band toured with We the Kings, There for Tomorrow and Versaemerge on the "Secret Valentine Tour". On May 1, 2009, the band performed an entire set dedicated to Queen.

After a short break, they toured with We the Kings, Forever the Sickest Kids, Nevershoutnever! and Mercy Mercedes on the "Bamboozle Road Show Tour". Shortly after, the band announced their first national headlining tour, called the "What Happens In Vegas..." tour, with the support of The Secret Handshake, A Rocket to the Moon, Eye Alaska, Anarbor, The Summer Set, and My Favorite Highway. The tour began on June 18 and ended on August 9.

On June 1, 2009 lead singer Alex DeLeon announced on his blog that guitarist Ian Crawford had decided to leave the band. Although DeLeon did say that Crawford had decided to leave due to creative differences, there seemed to be no animosity between him and the band. For their upcoming "What Happens in Vegas..." tour, The Cab announced that their friend Bryan Dawson would be replacing Ian Crawford, who is now the touring guitarist of Panic! at the Disco.

On August 19, 2009, bassist Cash Colligan announced that he would also be leaving the band. The news of Colligan's split first appeared on The Cab's official MySpace blog. Colligan's departure, like Crawford's, seemed to be amicable as the band wrote, "We wish him the best and I'm sure he'll be no stranger at a Cab show or anytime we're back in town." The same day Colligan posted his own explanation for leaving the band on his official MySpace blog. He wrote, "I'm proud as a founding member of this band to say the things I've done, the people I've met and the friends I've made. After five years it's time for me to take a mental nap. Being home I can collect my thoughts and move forward." Colligan went on to say that he would be settling down in Las Vegas and that now is just not the right time for him to be touring on the road.

In a blog Deleon posted after Cash decided to leave the band he said, "Thank you again to everyone for your unending support, you've made the tour and this summer one we'll never forget. We hope to see everybody again soon. We are happier than ever and have so many songs we are dying to show you guys! Get ready... the best is yet to come."

They announced they will be featured in the Alternative Press Tour 2010 and Warped Tour 2010. On January 16, 2010, Alex DeLeon announced via Twitter that "Bryan is going to be a father!". Bryan later confirmed, and confirmed his leave from the band, saying via his own Twitter that he "wanted to thank everyone for the support and love in this crazy time. Love you all now watch out the guys are gonna do great things, promise." A day later, Alex DeLeon announced that The Cab are looking for a new guitar player: "Anyone know any guitar players? serious submissions only. Here is your chance. We need someone who can really play. Big shoes to fill." They were recently featured on "The Real World".

The Cab was on the "Ap Tour" in March–May 2010. They played songs off ''Whisper War'' and are also performed a song, "Locked Up", from their new album.

On March 5, Alex DeLeon posted on his Twitter account "singing on the las vegas house of blues stage tonight. it's been too long. been craving the lights. can anyone guess with who?" Later that night he appeared on stage with former Cab bassist Cash Colligan's new band Play For Keeps. DeLeon sang guest vocals on the Play For Keeps song "Just Like The Movies" live, where normally Travis Clark from We The Kings sings on the recording.

On June 22, 2011, The Cab announced on their website that they were departing from their label Fueled By Ramen and Decaydance Records before finally releasing their new record, ''Symphony Soldier''. The first single from the record is "Bad," which debuted on Sirius XM Radio.

''Symphony Soldier'' was released on August 23, 2011. with its first single "Bad" released to iTunes early July and announced by the band on July 18. ''AbsolutePunk'' gave an extremely positive review, calling the album a "masterpiece." The Cab guitarist alumnus Ian Crawford played guitar for the album. It features several guest artists co-writing, including Pete Wentz, Bruno Mars and Adam Levine.
