Bagillt

Bagillt (Welsh pronunciation: [baɡɪɬt], English: /ˈbæɡɪlt/) is a small town near Holywell in Flintshire, North Wales. At the 2001 Census the population was recorded as 3,918.
Above Bagillt is Bryn Dychwelwch, "Hill of Retreat", so called from the retreat effected by Owain Gwynedd, when pursued by Henry II, with superior numbers. Castell Hen Blas also lies within the boundaries of Bagillt, a motte and bailey castle that was the birthplace of Dafydd ap Llywelyn, prince of Wales, around 1215. The castle ruins were partially excavated in the mid-1950s. Dafydd's birth was commemorated by the unveiling of a plaque on the wall of the Upper Shippe inn in the centre of the village on 25 July 2010, 770 years since the issuing of his earliest surviving charter as prince.
Mostyn Hall, the seat of one of the oldest Welsh families, lies close to Bagillt. Parts of the building date from the time of Henry VI. During the 15th century, the Earl of Richmond, the future Henry VII, is said to have been concealed here in the reign of Richard III, by the lord of Mostyn, Richard ap Howel. The Hall now houses antiquities and manuscripts pertaining to old British history and Welsh that were brought from Gloddaeth Hall, Llanrhos.

Basingwerk Abbey
Basingwerk Abbey (Welsh: Abaty Dinas Basing) is the ruin of an abbey near Holywell, Flintshire, Wales, in the care of Cadw (Welsh Heritage).
The abbey was founded in 1132 by Ranulph de Gernon, 2nd Earl of Chester, who brought Benedictine monks from Savigny Abbey in southern Normandy. In 1147, the abbey became part of the Cistercian Order and therefore a daughter house of Buildwas Abbey in Shropshire. Earlier on,^{[clarification needed]} they had received the manor of West Kirby from the Earls of Chester. In 1157, the abbey was given the manor of Glossop in Derbyshire by King Henry II. The hilltop Monks' Road and the Abbot's Chair in Glossop is a reminder of the monks' efforts to administer their possession. They gained a market charter for Glossop in 1290, and one for Charlesworth in 1328. In the 13th century, the abbey was under the patronage of Llywelyn the Great, Prince of Gwynedd, and his son Dafydd ap Llywelyn gave St Winefride's Well to the abbey. The monks harnessed the power of the Holywell stream to run a corn mill and to treat the wool from their sheep. In 1433, the monks leased all of Glossopdale, Derbyshire, to the Talbot family, later Earls of Shrewsbury.

Bretton Bridge
Bretton Bridge is a bridge in Flintshire, Wales. Situated between the villages of Broughton and Bretton, Bretton Bridge used to be a back-road link, often used to avoid the congestion on the A5104 (Saltney Straight).
The bridge still exists today, although its use has changed from a road to a public footpath, linking the lower part of Broughton village with Broughton Park.
The bridge itself used to act as a railway bridge when the line between Broughton and Kinnerton existed. The path of the old line can clearly be seen through the country park in Broughton, where a swerve now exists following the old line of the railway. Residents in neighbouring properties (The Boulevard) found remains of railway sleepers in back gardens in the late 1980s.
The old station waiting hut still exists today and remains relatively unspoilt.

Bretton is a village in Flintshire, Wales. It is located to the west of the city of Chester, near the border with Cheshire, England. Along with the nearby village of Broughton, the population was 5,791 at the 2001 Census.
The placename Bretton is probably derived from the Old Norse (ON) Bretar 'relating to the Britons (historical), the Welsh (people)' and the Old English language (OE) tūn 'relating to farm or estate' The original settlers in Bretton were Viking welshmen, possibly second or third generation expatriates, distinctive in origin, culture, dress, accent or speech, who may may well have called themselves, or been described by the English (and perhaps the Welsh), as ON Bretar rather than OE Walas or OE Cumbras.
Bretton Canal (also known as Sir John Glynne's Canal) was the western end of the waterway that crossed the Saltney Marsh on a route for two miles, and then turned to meet the new channel of the Dee a short distance away. It was used to transport coal from the mines owned by the Glynne family. The canal was abandoned in 1775 after only 10 years use, it eventually disappeared with the Saltney Marsh Enclosure Act of 1778.

Brynford (Welsh: Brynffordd) is a village in Flintshire, Wales. It is located to the south west of the town of Holywell and near the A55 road (North Wales Expressway). At the 2001 Census, Brynford had a population of 1,098.
Amenities in Brynford include St. Michael's Church, a local village shop, two inns, a park, golf club, private day nursery and local bus company, Oares Coaches. The Cynfaen Memorial Methodist Chapel, serving Brynford, is in the nearby village of Calcoed.
Historically, the area was extensively mined for lead and has been left with the scars of that past all over its common land.
The explorer and journalist Henry Morton Stanley was a student teacher in the old village school.

Buckley (Welsh: Bwcle) is a town and community in Flintshire, located in north-east Wales. It is situated 2 miles (3.2 km) from the county town of Mold and is contiguous with the nearby villages of Ewloe, Alltami (which are both under the jurisdiction of Buckley town council) and Mynydd Isa. The town is located on the A549 road, with the larger A55 road passing nearby.
Buckley is the second largest town in Flintshire in terms of population. According to the 2001 Census, the community had a total population of 14,568.
Notable nearby landmarks include Ewloe Castle.
Buckley was an Anglo-Saxon location, with some of its houses later recorded in the Norman Domesday Book of the 11th century. However, the first documented evidence of its existence dates from 1294 when it was described as the pasturage of the Manor of Ewloe, spelled as "Bokkeley".
The name Buckley may derive from the Old English bok lee, meaning meadow, or field. The likely meaning of the name was "clearing in a beech wood" (with boc meaning beech tree and ley meaning wood, glade or clearing). The name could also have been construed from bucc, a buck or deer; or bwlch y clai, meaning clay hole.

Caergwrle

Caergwrle is a village in the county of Flintshire, in north east Wales. Approximately 5–6 miles from Wrexham and situated on the A541 road, it is contiguous with the village of Abermorddu and closely related to the village of Hope. The village lies on the River Alyn and sits at the base of Hope Mountain. At the 2001 Census, the population was 1,650.
The 13th century ruined Caergwrle Castle was first built by prince Dafydd ap Gruffudd, in lands given to him by Edward I of England after the first Welsh campaign of 1277. The village originally had the English placename of Corley, but with the addition of the Welsh placename epithet "Caer", meaning "fortress", the name gradually took on Welsh characteristics. To explain the name, a myth developed of a giant named Gwrle, who was supposed to have lived in the castle and been buried in the nearby Neolithic burial mound at Cefn-y-bedd.
The 17th century Packhorse Bridge, which is reputed to be haunted, was nearly destroyed by flooding in 2000, though it has since been restored. There have been many other developments and restorations in Caergwrle.

Caergwrle Castle
Caergwrle Castle, also known as Queen's Hope in scholarly texts, is located in the town of Caergwrle, in Flintshire, Wales. It was the final castle to be built by Welsh rulers before the loss of Welsh independence in 1283. Built on a steep hill near the Anglo-Welsh border, the castle has views which extend far into Cheshire.
Construction of the castle began in 1277, after King Edward I gave the lordship of Hope to Dafydd ap Gruffudd as reward for his service in the Welsh war concluded earlier that year. Notable features included two D-shaped towers and a great circular keep overlooking the approach to the south-east. It has been speculated that Dafydd employed English masons to work on the castle, which was apparently unfinished when Dafydd revolted in 1282. By the time Edward had gathered an army to invade Wales in June, Dafydd had already retreated from Caergwrle, and had slighted the castle, even blocking up its well to deny it to the English. Edward promptly began rebuilding the castle, and gave it to his wife, Eleanor of Castile. However, a fire in 1283 gutted the castle, and it was never rebuilt.

Caernarfon

Caernarfon (/kərˈnɑrvən/; Welsh: [kaɨrˈnarvɔn]) is a Royal town, community and port in Gwynedd, Wales, with a population of 9,611. It lies along the A487 road, on the east banks of the Menai Straits, opposite the Isle of Anglesey. The city of Bangor is 8.6 miles (13.8 km) to the northeast, while Snowdonia fringes Caernarfon to the east and southeast. Caernarvon and Carnarvon are archaic anglicised spellings of Caernarfon, but used rarely.
Abundant natural resources in and around the Menai Straits enabled human habitation in the Caernarfon area during pre-history. The Ordovices were the Celtic tribe documented as living in this region during classical antiquity. The Roman fort called Segontium was established in about the year 80 to subjugate the Ordovices as part of the Roman conquest of Britain. The Romans were victorious and occupied the region until their departure in the 5th century, after which Caernarfon became part of the Kingdom of Gwynedd. In the 11th century, William I, King of England ordered the construction of a motte-and-bailey at Caernarfon, so as to fulfill the Norman invasion of Wales.

Caerwys

Caerwys is a town in Flintshire, Wales. It is situated just under two miles from the A55 North Wales Expressway and one mile from the A541 Mold-Denbigh road. At the 2001 Census, the population of Caerwys civil parish was 1,315, with a total ward population of 2,496.
Caerwys is mentioned in the Domesday Book as a small market town. The well-maintained church is dedicated to St. Michael. It has two parallel naves. The oldest part of the building is a stone tower whose base is said to have been part of a Roman observation tower. Contained within the church is the cover slab of a tomb reputed to have been that of Elizabeth Ferrers, the wife of Dafydd ap Gruffudd, prince of Wales (d. 1283). A short, informative booklet about the church was written in 1936 and updated in 1995. As well as being surrounded by areas of outstanding natural beauty and views across mountains and valleys, the centre of Caerwys has been designated a conservation area.

Chester ( /ˈtʃɛstər/ CHESS-tər), is a city in Cheshire, England. Lying on the River Dee, close to the border with Wales, it is home to 80,121 inhabitants, and is the largest and most populous settlement of the wider unitary authority area of Cheshire West and Chester, which had a population of 328,100 according to the 2001 Census. Chester was granted city status in 1541.
Chester was founded as a "castrum" or Roman fort with the name Deva Victrix in the year 79 by the Roman Legio II Adiutrix during the reign of the Emperor Vespasian. Chester's four main roads, Eastgate, Northgate, Watergate and Bridge, follow routes laid out at this time – almost 2,000 years ago. One of the three main Roman army bases, Deva later became a major settlement in the Roman province of Britannia. After the Romans left in the 5th century, the Saxons fortified the town against the Danes and gave Chester its name. The patron saint of Chester, Werburgh, is buried in Chester Cathedral.

Cilcain is a small community, near Mold in Flintshire, north-east Wales. The village has an industrial history and includes the Millennium Woods, a post office, a public house, a parish church, a Primary School (Ysgol y Foel) and a village hall.
Cilcain borders the parishes of Rhosesmor, Rhes-y-cae and Rhydymwyn.
The Welsh placename Cilcain, which has also in the past been spelled as Kilken and Cilcen, has been suggested to derive from cil meaning 'retreat' and cain meaning 'fair' or 'pleasant' in the Welsh language.
In the early years of Cilcain's existence it was noted as a place of retreat and was also locally famous for its regular village fairs, where a notable amount of alcohol was often consumed. Cilcain was also known for cockfighting, which took place on Sundays after the local church service.
The first recorded mention of the church at Cilcain dates from 1291. Cilcain is one of the "ancient parishes" of Flintshire. It originally comprised the seven townships of Cefn, Llan (or Tre'r Llan), Llystynhunydd (or Glust), Llys y Coed, Maes y Groes, Mechlas (or Dolfechlas), and Trellyniau. On 27 June 1848, the township of Trellyniau and part of the township of Llystynhunydd went to the new parish of Rhes-y-Cae. On 31 March 1865, the remainder of Llystynhunydd, and parts of the townships of Cefn and Mechlas, went to the new parish of Rhydymwyn.

Clwyd
Clwyd (Welsh pronunciation: [ˈklʊɨd]) is a preserved county of Wales, situated in the north-east, bordering England with Cheshire to its east, Shropshire to the south-east, and the Welsh counties of Gwynedd to its immediate west and Powys to the south. It additionally shares a maritime border with the metropolitan county of Merseyside along the River Dee. Between 1974 and 1996, it was a county with a county council, and it was divided into six districts. It is named after the River Clwyd, which runs through the region. It was also a Royal Mail postal county before the postal county scheme was abolished in 1996. Clwyd County Council was based in the county town of Mold.
From the late 1950s, the radical reform of local government in Wales was considered more pressing than that in England, due to the small size of many of the existing authorities, especially the upper tier county councils. The Local Government Commission for Wales set up in 1958 was the first to recommend wholesale amalgamation of the administrative counties outside Glamorgan and Monmouthshire, with extensive boundary changes; however the then Minister of Housing and Local Government Sir Keith Joseph decided not to accept the report, noting that county amalgamations in England had been highly unpopular when proposed.

Clwydian Range
The Clwydian Range (Welsh: Bryniau Clwyd) is a series of hills and mountains in north east Wales that runs from Llandegla in the south to Prestatyn in the north, with the highest point being the popular Moel Famau. The range is designated as an area of outstanding natural beauty.
The summits of these hills provide extensive views across north Wales, to the high peaks of Snowdonia, eastwards across the Cheshire Plain, Peak District and towards Manchester and Liverpool to the northeast. The AONB is to be extended to include the Dee Valley around Llangollen and Horseshoe Pass.
The Clwydian Hills are formed from an upstanding block of Silurian age sandstones, mudstones and siltstones. The range's rocks are intensely faulted; the major Vale of Clwyd Fault is responsible for the impressive west-facing scarp of the Clwydian Range. It downthrows the rocks to the west and separates the younger Carboniferous and Permo-Triassic rocks of the Vale of Clwyd from those of the hills.
The range includes a number of hills possessing Iron Age hill forts, including (from the north) Y Foel (Moel Hiraddug), Moel-y-gaer, Penycloddiau, Moel Arthur, a second Moel y Gaer and Foel Fenlli. There are, as with many places in the west of Britain, a number of legends associated with King Arthur surrounding these hills.

Connah's Quay

Connah's Quay (Welsh: Cei Connah) is the largest town in Flintshire, Wales, lying on the River Dee, near the border with England. It can be accessed by road from the A550, by rail from the nearby Shotton station and also lies on the National Cycle Network Route 5. It is situated near the region's industrial centre, Deeside Industrial Park. The major part of Corus Steelworks lies on the town's border on the north bank of the River Dee. Wepre Woods, an ancient woodland in the town, is controlled by Flintshire County Council's Ranger Service and includes Ewloe Castle which dates from the 13th century.
The original name of the place was New Quay, but due to confusion with other similarly named locations, it was renamed. Renamed some time after 1860, the town's placename is of uncertain origin amongst the theories are that it came from a former landlord of "The Old Quay House", a public house which still lies on the docks in what is now the west side of the town. Other theories are that Connah was a man who owned a chandlery store on the docks. Yet another theory is that Connah's Quay got its name from a lady called Mary Connah and when people crossed the River Dee from places opposite, such as Parkgate or Neston, they would ask, "Could you take me to Connah's Quay," because Mary Connah used to own the Dock.

Cymau
Cymau is a small village situated in the community of Llanfynydd, Flintshire on the edge of the mountains of north-east Wales. Its name is derived from the Welsh word cymau, an old form of the plural for cwm, "valley" or "hollow".
The village is located on the side of Hope Mountain, a land feature that can be seen for miles around. Neighbouring villages include Ffrith to the west and Brymbo to the south. The nearest towns are Wrexham to the south-east and Mold towards the north-west.
The area is known for its scenic beauty and large number of available hill-walking routes. The summit of Hope Mountain offers views of the Cheshire Plain and, in the opposite direction, it is possible to see sunsets behind the Welsh hills.
The population of Cymau is around 350. The village boasts a pub (The Old Talbot Inn) and one parish church with a roof made from corrugated iron and also a chapel. The former village Post Office and general store closed in 2009.
During the winter months, despite the local bus being occasionally unable to traverse the terrain, the village remains reasonably accessible.

Dee Estuary

The Dee Estuary (Welsh: Aber Dyfrdwy) is a large estuary by means of which the River Dee flows into Liverpool Bay. The estuary starts near Shotton after a five miles (8 km) 'canalised' section and the river soon swells to be several miles wide forming the boundary between the Wirral Peninsula in north-west England and Flintshire in north-east Wales.
The estuary is unusual in that comparatively little water occupies so large a basin. One theory is that larger rivers such as the Severn and/or Mersey once flowed into the Dee. The current view is that the estuary owes its origin to the passage of glacial ice southeastwards from the Irish Sea during successive ice ages, eroding a broad and shallow iceway through the relatively soft Triassic sandstones and Coal Measures mudstones which underlie the area. The inner parts of this channel were filled by glacially derived sands and gravels long ago and infilling by mud and silt has continued since. It is also thought that prior to the ice ages, the estuary received larger river flows as the upper Severn flowed into the Dee near Chirk. For a period, the Mersey may also have flowed into the Dee by means of a channel which it cut through the base of the Wirral Peninsula.

Ewloe

Ewloe (English: /ˈjuːloʊ/; Welsh: Ewlo, Welsh pronunciation: [ˈɛʊlɔ]) is a small town in North Wales, contiguous with Hawarden and Buckley and near to Queensferry and Shotton. Situated close to the Flintshire/Cheshire sector of the Wales-England border, Ewloe forms part of Deeside. The A55 expressway passes through the town and its most notable landmark is Ewloe Castle. At the 2001 Census, the population was 4,862 (2,390 males, 2,472 females).
In 2004 professional footballer Michael Owen bought a small street of houses, Austen Close in Ewloe, for his extended family. He also grew up and owned a house nearby.
Ewloe grew rapidly during the late 1990s and early 2000s and is now the home of the internet based Moneysupermarket.com and construction company Redrow. HSBC Bank along with many other firms including Unilever can be found in Ewloe, who now occupy what used to be the old Alyn and Deeside District Council Office.
The De Vere Group chain of hotels hosts the 'St David's Hotel' just off the A55 road network in Ewloe. The St David's Park housing estate was built in the 1990s and is known as being a prestigious estate popular with young professionals and families respectively. Increasing numbers of new property and the resulted increase to population in Ewloe has led to the opening of a new Co-op supermarket, despite the original Co-op opposite the Ewloe Post Office, in Ewloe, which clearly starts at Wood Lane (see the sign on the corner of Wood Lane and The Hwy, this is the boundary of Ewloe / Hawarden, so the Co-op is 100m inside of Ewloe), still being open.

Richard II was handed over to his enemy Henry Bolingbroke in the castle in 1399. As a consequence, it is the setting for Act III, Scene III of the Shakespeare play Richard II. The castle was the first of Edward I's 'iron ring' of royal castles to be built in Wales, and the design served as the basis for larger castles such as Harlech and Rhuddlan. Owain Glyndŵr unsuccessfully assaulted it at the commencement of his revolt in 1400.

Gladstone's Library
Gladstone's Library, known until 2010 as St Deiniol's Library (Welsh: Llyfrgell Deiniol Sant), is a residential library in Hawarden, Flintshire, Wales.
The library was founded by the Victorian statesman and politician William Ewart Gladstone (1809 - 1898). In 1895, at the age of 85, Gladstone gave £40,000 (equivalent to £3.42 million today) and much of his own library. Despite his advanced age, he himself hauled most of his 32,000 books a quarter of a mile to their new home using his wheelbarrow.
It is Britain's largest residential library and is considered an important research library in Wales with over 250,000 items, mostly in the subjects of the arts and humanities.

Gwernymynydd
Gwernymynydd (Welsh:Mountain of the Elder Trees) is a small community in the market town of Mold, or Yr Wyddgrug in Flintshire, North Wales. At its highest point it is one thousand feet above sea level. With around one thousand inhabitants, it boasts three pubs (The Swan, The Rainbow, and The Glyndwr) and a once-busy garage, now a coach depot, home to Eagles & Crawford. Gwernymynydd is also home to a farm, a community centre, and a village primary school. Neighbouring communities include Cadole, Y Waun (Gwernaffield), Nercwys, and Yr Wyddgrug (Mold).
Little remains of its industrial history; the worked-out Cambrian limestone quarry was once owned by Lever Brothers of Port Sunlight, manufacturers of VIM, a scouring powder made from the silicone sandstone quarried here, which was ideal for the purpose. Lever's took over the Cambrian Works and Quarry in 1905 and stayed for half a century.
Like many villages of the early 20th century, Gwernymynydd had a local benefactor, the Waln family of Fron Hall. Mold Hospital was given by them, some of its modern equipment, including it is thought, an operating table.

Halkyn is one of the ancient parishes of Flintshire, originally comprising the townships of Hendrefigillt, Lygan y Llan and Lygan y Wern. The areas was notable during the Roman occupation for the mining of lead. The village was recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Alchene, when it was then part of Cheshire, in England.
Halkyn also had many pubs back in the early 19th Century there was lots of pubs such as the Crown Inn now known as crown cottages which is on the left side as you go towards Rhes-Y-Cae from the old post office also the Royal Oak Halkyn now known as the Old Royal Oak which is directly opposite the Blue Bell down a lane going towards pen y parc it has now been sold into private hands, Raven known as Raven Cottage located in The Catch and the award winning Blue Bell Inn which is still serving a pint for the villagers to enjoy today. There was also a few shops there was a butchers a post office originally run from Holly House then after moved over the road which has now closed also the Crown Inn was a shop up until 1892 when it was licensed as a beer house and also there was a shop located at a house called Scraton House a big orange house which has over recent years had its name changed to Swn-Y-Mynydd the shop was called 'Scranton Stores' which is understandable because the original name of the house was 'Scranton House' now a private house.

Hawarden Airport is one of 2 public airfields in the north of Wales although services are intermittent, the second being at Caernarfon. Its primary function is to serve the Raytheon and BAE Systems aerospace factories in the adjacent village of Broughton, where Airbus manufacture the wings of the Airbus airliners before they are flown in a Beluga cargo aircraft to Bremen, Germany for equipping (A330/340 & A300 Wings) or Hamburg, Germany and Toulouse, France (A320 family wings) for final assembly of the complete aircraft. The wings of the Airbus A380 are too large to be flown out and are instead transported by barge down the River Dee, to the port of Mostyn.

Hawarden Aerodrome has a CAA Ordinary Licence (Number P786) that allows flights for the public transport of passengers or for flying instruction as authorised by the licensee (Airbus UK Limited).
The aircraft factory at Broughton was established early in the second world war as a shadow factory for Vickers-Armstrongs Limited. The factory produced 5,540 Vickers Wellingtons and 235 Avro Lancasters. Post-war the factory was used by Vickers to build 28,000 aluminium prefab bungalows. Despite the name, the airport is located in Broughton and not Hawarden.

Hope (Welsh: Yr Hob) is a small village in Flintshire, north-east Wales. The village is located approximately 3 miles / 4.5 km from the Wales-England border, on the course of the River Alyn.
Hope belongs to a small group of closely related villages in its local area, including Caergwrle, Abermorddu and Cefn-y-bedd. One of the major features in the area is Hope Mountain (Mynydd yr Hob), to the west of the village, along with the extensive farmland of Shordley. At the 2001 Census, the population was 2,522.
In 2007, the secondary school Castell Alun High, which is located in the village, became the only school in North Wales to be awarded 7 Grade 1s by Estyn, the school inspection service for Wales. The judgement makes Castell Alun one of the top schools in Wales.
Hope has good transport links with local towns and cities, notably Wrexham, Chester and Mold, with the Borderlands Line running directly through Hope railway station giving access to Liverpool via the Wirral Peninsula.

Mold Castle, on Bailey Hill in the town of Mold, Flintshire, Northeast Wales, was an earthwork motte and bailey fortress probably founded by Robert de Montalt around the year 1140. Mostyn Colliery
Coordinates: 53°19′12″N 3°15′47″W / 53.320°N 3.263°W / 53.320; -3.263 Mostyn Colliery was a pioneering coal mine in Flintshire, North Wales, which was owned in the later part of its operating life by the influential Mostyn family. The mine was located on the banks of the River Dee.
The Welsh writer Thomas Pennant wrote that the mines at Mostyn were established as far back as 1261, during the reign of Edward I. Records show that in 1294, together with a stone quarry, the mine had a value of £5 annually, and in 1423 were worth on their own £3 6s 8d.
In the early years, coal was removed from the colliery site by boats, which approached the quayside at high water. However, the changing river bed meant that a partial canal was dug to ensure safe passage.
Records show that Thomas Cowper and Richard Mason of London leased Mostyn Colliery in 1594. Records suggest that by the 17th century Mostyn was possibly the largest colliery on the Western seaboard of Britain. It certainly seems to have been the most profitable in the North Wales Coalfield.

Mynydd Isa [mənɪð ɪsɒː]^[stress?] is a village in Flintshire, in north-east Wales. It lies between the county town of Mold, and Buckley. Mynydd Isa was originally a small hamlet on the north side of the Mold to Buckley road (now the A549 road) just downhill from the now demolished Calvinist chapel. It does not appear on Ordnance Survey maps until after the 1840s.
Its placename is Welsh for "lower mountain".
Another old hamlet nearby was Pant-y-Fownog, on the same road nearer Buckley (centred on the Griffin Inn); although the name was used well into the 1900s on picture postcards of the area and by the local Co-Op shop next to the Inn, it has long since become disused (lending its name to a road only).
Bryn-y-Baal is an old hamlet much enlarged since the 1970s and now contiguous with but not part of Mynydd Isa. Bryn-y-Baal takes its name from a Middle English word "bale" (rhymes with "Carl") meaning small hill. It was later written in a Welsh language form as 'bâl' with a circumflex over the "â". In Welsh this is pronounced as a long A. This form appears on early Ordnance Survey maps. Eventually it was written in the Anglicised form 'Baal' - still correctly pronounced to rhyme with "Carl"..

Nannerch is one of the ancient parishes of Flintshire, made up of the townships of Trellan, Trefechan, Trecwm and Tre Penbedw.
It is a quiet and attractive ancient village, sitting on a bedrock of carboniferous limestone, overlain by glacial boulder clay with glacial hollows. The limestone has been used in the construction of many local buildings. The ruins of Iron Age hill forts at Pen-y-Cloddiau and Moel Arthur are situated in the nearby hills.
The old church, which was dedicated to St. Mary, was demolished in 1852, and a new building was erected on the same site. The new church, which is dedicated to St. Michael and All Angels, was consecrated on 29 September 1853. The church was designed by Thomas W. Wyatt, of London, the architect of the neighbouring churches of Brynford and Gorsedd.

The village is home to two pubs, a cricket club, and a golf course. At the centre of the village stands the church of St Eurgain and St Peter, towering 98 feet above the village. Northop College is also based in Northop, offering horticultural courses for students of all ages, in areas such as Animal Care, floristry, Horse Care, Horticulture and agricultural machinery.
The name seems to be derived from North Hope, to distinguish it from the nearby village of Hope, which has also been known as East Hope.
Another source claims the name originates from North and Thorpe, the latter word meaning village or town in the Saxon language. Written in ancient records as Northorpe, the name Northop was in use after the surrender of Chester to Egbert of Wessex, circa AD 828, when Flintshire was brought under Saxon rule.

Pantymwyn is a small village just outside Mold in North Wales in the county of Flintshire.
The village is located within a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, lying on the east side of the Clwydian Range. Pantymwyn is 4 miles west of Mold in Flintshire, North Wales. It is 16 miles west of Chester (See map for detailed view).

Pentre Halkyn
Pentre Halkyn (Welsh: Pentre Helygain) is a small village in Flintshire, North Wales. It is situated approximately three miles from Holywell, and is off Junction 32 of the A55 North Wales Expressway. It has a quarry, a small hotel, a local shop and not much else. The village borders on the Halkyn Mountain Site of Special Scientific Interest and Special Area of Conservation .
The village of Pentre Halkyn is fairly small featuring a shop, a post office, football and cricket grounds and a play area. It has one main road running through the middle that comes off the A55 and leads down to the town of Holywell. Pentre Halkyn also has a hotel down by the A55 called the Springfield Hotel. One of the many sights is quarry trucks going to the quarries situated on Halkyn Mountain. It is a very picturesque village that sits on the side of a very steep incline. Views of North East Wales and Merseyside are clearly visible from the village, and on a clear day even Blackpool Tower can be seen. Local folk-lore speaks of a monster that haunts this village called "Sassy" by the villagers. It is described as a long haired woolly beast, that steals sheep from the mountainside and feasts on them within its cave. Its is a beautiful village and worth a visit.

Penymynydd is a small village in Flintshire, North Wales, merging with the larger neighbouring village of Penyffordd. The name Penymynydd is Welsh, meaning "top" or "end of the mountain".

Penymynydd has one church: St John The Baptist's Church. A second church formerly existed in the village and has since been redeveloped. Point of Ayr

Point of Ayr (Welsh: Y Parlwr Du) is the northernmost point of mainland Wales. It is situated immediately to the north of Talacre in Flintshire, at the mouth of the Dee estuary. It is to the southwest of the Liverpool Bay area of the Irish Sea. It is the site of a RSPB (Royal Society for the Protection of Birds) nature reserve RSPB Dee Estuary Point of Ayr|, http://www.rspb.org.uk/pointofayr , and is part of Gronant and Talacre Dunes Site of Special Scientific Interest.
For many years a colliery operated at Point of Ayr at the northern extremity of the Flintshire Coalfield; it was one of the last remaining operational deep mines in Wales. The first trial borings took place in 1865, under the direction of Lord Mostyn, owner of Mostyn Colliery, a few miles away. The borings seemed successful, and the Prestatyn Coal Company was formed to commence operations proper, however the project was abandoned before it got off the ground. In 1873, the site was investigated a second time, by a newly formed company, the Western Mostyn Colliery Company, however the trial shaft was not successful, and the project was again abandoned.

RAF Sealand
RAF Sealand was a former Royal Air Force station in Flintshire, north Wales and operated between 1916 and 2006.
Under defence cuts announced in 2004 RAF Sealand was completely closed in April 2006. All remaining RAF units were moved to RAF Leeming. Part of the original airfield is now operated as the civilian MOD Sealand.
It was originally a civilian airfield and was taken over by the military in 1916 for training. Two twin hangars, which were built in 1917, were used by the newly-formed Royal Flying Corps. Originally named RFCS Shotwick and later RAF Shotwick, the station was finally named RAF Sealand during World War II.
Immediately pre-war and in the early war years, it was the home of No 5 FTS (Flying Training School), equipped with Airspeed Oxfords. During the war, the Flying Training Schools provided what was in effect intermediate training for pilots who had received ab initio training and flown solo at an EFTS (Elementary Flying Training School) and who had subsequently been inducted into the RAF. Pilots thus arrived at No. 5 FTS RAF Sealand as APOs (Acting Pilot Officers) and upon satisfactory completion of intermediate training became POs (Pilot Officers), and were prepared for posting to a squadron or OTU (Operational Training Unit). Kenneth Cross spent time at No. 5 FTS as an instructor in the early 1930s. From 5 August 1940, the CFI (Chief Flying Instructor) was Edward Mortlock Donaldson. Amongst the pilots who trained at No 5 FTS, RAF Sealand was Johnnie Johnson (RAF officer).

Rhes-y-cae
Rhes-y-cae is a small parish and village located in Flintshire, Wales. It is situated between Pentre Halkyn and Rhosesmor and is part of the local government community of Halkyn. Local facilities include a chapel, a church and a small primary school, Ysgol Rhes-Y-Cae.
The parish was consecrated on June 27th, in the year 1847. Although the village shop has shut down, and the bakery closed to the public, Rhes-y-cae is still home to a pub, the Miners Arms.

Rhosesmor is a small village near Mold, Flintshire, in north-east Wales. The village lies near the parishes of Halkyn and Rhes-y-cae. The hamlet of Wern-y-Gaer is encompassed by the boundaries of the village.
The new parish of Caerfallwch (the traditional Welsh placename for the village) was created on 23 October 1876, from part of the township of Caerfallwch, which until that time had been in the parish of Northop.

The village has a lead mining history and several of the buildings, particularly in the Wern-y-Gaer area of the modern village are more than three hundred years old. The Celtic hill fort of Moel-y-Gaer is above the village, which dates to pre-Roman times. There is also a school house still standing in rhosesmor now a private house it one was the school of many rhosesmor villagers sadly the whole school doesnt remain as at the back it has been knocked down in stages,also nearby there once stood a pub called the Cross Keys believe to be haunted the land lady and landlord also heard noises in the night of which they couldnt explain but sadly this was all replaced in the early 2000's by modern housing.

Rhuddlan (district)

The Borough of Rhuddlan was one of six districts of the county of Clwyd, north-east Wales, from 1974 to 1996. It was formed under the Local Government Act 1972 from part of the administrative county of Flintshire, namely the urban districts of Prestatyn and Rhyl and St Asaph Rural District.
The district was named after Rhuddlan Castle, where the Statute of Rhuddlan was issued in 1284. This was illustrated in the borough's coat of arms which showed a castle of the time of Edward I in the shield, and a Welsh dragon grasping a parchment scroll, representing the statute, as the crest. The borough's motto was Rhuddlan Crud Cymru or Rhuddlan, Cradle of Wales.
The district was abolished in 1996, with its area forming part of the Denbighshire unitary authority.

Rhydymwyn

Rhydymwyn (the word in Welsh means 'Ford of the Ore' and takes its placename from the ford across the River Alyn now replaced by a small iron bridge) is a village in Flintshire, North Wales, located in the upper Alyn valley. Once a district of Mold, it was recognised as a separate parish from 1865.
The geology of the area consists of a layer of extremely pure, and hence structurally sound, 200 feet (61 m) thick layer of limestone at depths ranging from surface to 900 feet (270 m). The limestone holds other minerals, including lead, nickel and copper deposits, making it an ideal site for mining.
Due to the industrialisation of Northwest England, and its needs for mineral supplies, the mineral deposits in the Alyn valley created a population explosion in various villages, including Rhydymwyn. From the mid-18th century, Rhydymwyn was the site for a range of industries, which included foundries, waterwheels as well as mine workings.

River Alyn
The River Alyn (Welsh: Afon Alun) is a tributary of the River Dee. The River Alyn rises at the southern end of the Clwydian hills and the Alyn Valley forms part of the Clwydian Range Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The main town on the river Alyn is Mold, the county town of Flintshire.
The River Alyn crosses the carboniferous limestone from Halkyn Mountain and North through the Loggerheads area before heading southeast making through Mold before making its confluence with the River Dee to the northeast of Wrexham.
Between Loggerheads and Rhydymwyn it runs through the Alyn Gorge, which is the site of the caves Ogof Hesp Alyn, Ogof Hen Ffynhonnau and Ogof Nadolig. The river mainly runs across a limestone surface, creating potholes and underwater caves, into which the river flows through some of the summer, when river levels have decreased significantly. For parts of this stretch the river bed is dry for most of the year.
Flows in the River Alyn are significantly affected by mining, particularly the Milwr mine drainage tunnel which diverts a sizeable amount of the River Alyn out of its catchment and into the estuary of the River Dee at Bagillt.

Saltney

Saltney is a small town in Flintshire, Wales. It is immediately to the west of the border with Cheshire in England and is contiguous with the Chester urban area.
The name is derived from the former salt marshes on which it is built, lying on the River Dee. Once the terminus of Sir John Glynne's Canal, Saltney grew in the late 19th century and through the 20th century to its present population of 4,769 at the 2001 Census.
Higher Saltney more commonly known by local people as "Top Saltney" (part of the area known locally as Saltney) is in Chester, Cheshire, with the Welsh sector of the community known more specifically as Saltney Town. The English-Welsh border runs down the middle of Boundary Lane in Saltney, the only urban street in England/Wales where this happens. This means that houses on the west side of the street are in the Flintshire County Council area and in the North Wales Police jurisdiction, while those on the east side are in the Cheshire West and Chester unitary authority area and in the Cheshire Police jurisdiction.

Sealand (Welsh: Gwlad y Mor)^{[citation needed]} is a community in Flintshire, north-east Wales, on the edge of the Wirral peninsula. It is situated to the west of the city of Chester, England, and is part of the Deeside conurbation on the Wales-England border. At the 2001 Census, it had a population of 2,746 (1,342 males, 1,404 females).
The settlement is built on an area of flat land formed by silting at the head of the estuary of the River Dee. Located on the A548 road, Sealand is near to the Chester dormitory communities of Blacon and Saughall.
RAF Sealand was originally a civilian airfield and was taken over by the military in 1916 for training. No 30 Maintenance unit was formed there in 1939. In 1951 the base was taken over by the United States Air Force, and handed back to the RAF in 1957.
As a result of defence cuts announced in 2004, RAF Sealand was closed in April 2006.

Shotton, Flintshire

Shotton is a town in Flintshire, north Wales, lying on the River Dee. The name derives from the Old Norse words sjò (sea) and tùn (village). It is continuous with the towns of Connah's Quay and Queensferry in what is called Deeside. At the 2001 Census Shotton had a population of 6,265.
Originally founded by Anglo-Saxons, the town grew from the eighteenth century around coal mining and farming on reclaimed marshland. Steel works later grew up, and Shotton also became a railway junction.
The steel works was originally owned by John Summers and Sons, a Stalybridge ironworks company. It was later bought by the government under British Steel. It was privatised and acquired by Corus Group, which still maintains operations.
The town lies under the Hawarden Bridge, completed in 1889 and originally a swing-opening bridge.

St Winefride's Well
St Winefride's Well (often spelt "Winifred's") is a holy well located in Holywell, in Flintshire in Wales. It is the oldest continually visited pilgrimage site in Great Britain.
The well is believed to be connected to St Mary's well and chapel in Cefn Meiriadog, Denbighshire. In that it is one of the few locations mentioned by name in the anonymous medieval alliterative poem Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, it is interesting to compare the site's beheading history with the beheading game in the poem.

The healing waters have been said to cause miraculous cures. The legend of St Winefride tells how in 660AD, Caradoc, the son of a local prince, severed the head of the young Winefride after she spurned his advances. A spring rose from the ground at the spot where her head fell and she was later restored to life by her uncle, St. Beuno.
The holy well is known as "the Lourdes of Wales" and is mentioned in an old rhyme as one of the Seven Wonders of Wales. It has been a pilgrimage site since the 7th century.

Sychdyn (Soughton in English, is its original Saxon name, meaning South Town) is a village in Flintshire, Wales. It is situated on the A5119 road, and is just over 1km north of the county town of Mold.
Sychdyn, which is completely surrounded by farmland and undisturbed woodland, is also a commuter village with residents working in nearby Chester, Liverpool or Wrexham. The village contains the 'Cross Keys' public house, a SPAR convenience store, post office, Bryn Seion chapel, horse riding school, and a primary school, Sychdyn County Primary.
Soughton Hall is a large country mansion-turned-hotel situated on the northern outskirts of the village. Notable guests that have stayed here include Luciano Pavarotti, Michael Jackson and King Juan Carlos I of Spain. Lower Soughton Hall is situated about 1.5 km to the north of Soughton Hall, and is currently owned by the footballer Michael Owen.
Sychdyn Memorial Hall is the home to many different societies including the Youth Club and Red Dragon Lans. The hall can be hired out for special occasions. Sychdyn also has a bowling green, football pitch and all-weather pitch, which can be booked for games and matches. The bowling green is entered via a War Memorial Arch, which commemorates those who gave their lives for their country.

Talacre

Talacre is a village in Flintshire on the North Wales coast with large holiday caravan parks adjacent. It is near Point of Ayr on the west side of the River Dee estuary and has a sandy beach with dunes. The hills of the Clwydian Range behind the village form the eastern boundary of the Vale of Clwyd. The name Talacre is a combination of the Welsh words tal, meaning end, and acrau, meaning acres. In the north-east Welsh dialect, acrau is pronounced as acre.
The village is probably most popular for the lighthouse on the nearby beach and the Talacre Beach Caravan Park, a short walk away from the Presthaven Sands holiday park. The lighthouse has been noted for numerous ghostly sightings, people claiming to see a figure wearing old fashioned lighthouse keeper clothes and standing in front of the glass dome of the abandoned lighthouse.
Talacre was used by the military during World War II, as an aircraft firing range. Fighters flew over the remote village every day, shooting at wooden targets in the dunes and at drogues towed by aircraft. It was also used for testing new devices, such as "window" the anti-radar foil that, on occasion, covered the whole village with silver.

The Gop
The Gop is a neolithic mound lying north of Trelawnyd in Flintshire, Wales. Oval in form, it is the second-largest such mound in Britain after Silbury Hill. Excavations have uncovered no burial chambers or other underground works. This may indicate that it was used as a look-out or hill fort; there is evidence that there was a considerable amount of stone on the top of hill. In the 17th century, its prominent position allowed a beacon to be placed there.
The mound lies on top of Gop Hill, a natural limestone outcrop, in the side of which are the Gop Caves.

Trelogan
Trelogan is a village in Flintshire, north east Wales. It is located between Mostyn and Trelawnyd and is almost contiguous with Berthengam. Trelogan has a population of approximately 200 people.
The village has its own primary school (Ysgol Gynradd Trelogan), a public house (The Afon Goch), community centre, photographers studio, animal rescue centre and, until 2005, its own post office.
The placename Trelogan derives from the name Logan, the person believed to have founded the village having been named that. The village in history was the locality for several lead-zinc mines, working at least until 1841.
Many people in Japan are familiar with Trelogan, as UK scientists developed a process to plant the semi-toxic, at least to plants, spoil tips from the lead-zinc mines with native UK plant species. Up to this point it had not been possible to grow plants on this type of semi-toxic terrain which was common in Japan due to the many lead-zinc mines in operation.
Trelogan Primary School (Ysgol Gynradd Trelogan) is a primary school that educates around 60 pupils, aged 5-11, and has 3 full-time staff. The Headteacher of the school is Mrs Margaret Madoc-Jones. The school was opened in 1908.

Treuddyn

Treuddyn is a small village and community in Flintshire, Wales, located just off the A5104 road, around 4 miles south-east of Mold and 3 miles north-west of Caergwrle. The community includes the nearby village of Coed Talon, to the east, and Rhydtalog, to the south-west on the Denbighshire border. The community's population was 1,567 during the 2001 Census.
There are two primary schools: Ysgol Terrig, which is a Welsh medium school and Ysgol Parc y Llan, which is an English medium school. The closest secondary schools are Ysgol Maes Garmon (Welsh) and Alun School (English) in Mold, 4.5 miles away.
Treuddyn has its own church, St Mary's, and there are also two active chapels in the village. A third chapel, that of the Baptist denomination, has closed. There are many Bronze Age cairns in the area. It was an industrial area during the 19th and 20th centuries, with mining of coal, iron and lead. There was a distillery to extract oil from the coal, and a blast furnace between 1817 and 1865. In 1834 around 450 men were constantly employed in the collieries and other industries.

Ysceifiog

Ysceifiog, also written Ysgeifiog, is a small village, community and parish in Flintshire. It lies on a back road just north of the A541 highway between Nannerch and Caerwys. The name translates roughly as "a place where elder trees grow".
The parish includes the villages of Lixwm, to the east of Ysceifiog village, and Babell, to the north.
The antiquarian and copyist of Welsh manuscripts John Jones (c.1585-1657/8) was born and brought up in the small mansion of Gellilyfdy in Ysceifiog parish.
The poet William Edwards (Wil Ysceifiog) also lived there in the first half of the 19th century, and John Owen (1733-1776), one of the pioneers of Methodism in Flintshire, was a native of Ysceifiog.
The village pub, the Fox Inn, is a substantially unaltered 18th century building, with a front room listed on CAMRA's register of nationally important pub interiors.
The village committee maintains the local village hall which plays hosts to varying village events. The local football team, Ysceifiog F.C., joined the Llandyrnog and district village summer league in 1976. It took them 31 years to win a trophy. Junior Team Ysceifiog Wolves JFC have been a success in Junior football coming runners up in the Tesco UK Championships in 2011.

Emma, Lady Hamilton
Emma, Lady Hamilton (26 April 1765; baptised 12 May 1765 – 15 January 1815) is best remembered as the mistress of Lord Nelson and as the muse of George Romney. She was born Amy Lyon in Ness near Neston, Cheshire, England, the daughter of a blacksmith, Henry Lyon, who died when she was two months old. She was brought up by her mother, formerly Mary Kidd, at Hawarden, with no formal education. She later changed her name to Emma Hart.
Details of Emma's early life are unclear, but at age 12, she was known to be working as a maid at the Hawarden home of Doctor Honoratus Leigh Thomas, a surgeon working in Chester. Then she worked for the Budd family in Chatham Place, Blackfriars, and met a maid called Jane Powell, who wanted to be an actress. Emma joined in with Jane's rehearsals for various tragic roles. After this short stay in London, Emma went back to her mother, who was living near Oxford Street. Inspired by Jane's enthusiasm for the theatre, Emma started work at the Drury Lane theatre in Covent Garden, as maid to various actresses, among them Mary Robinson. However, this paid little.

Gary Speed
Gary Andrew Speed, MBE (8 September 1969 – 27 November 2011) was a Welsh football player and manager. He is best known for his spell between 1984 and 1996 at Leeds United where he won the English Football League First Division Championship in 1992, and also for his spell between 1998 and 2004 at Newcastle United. He was also the captain of the Wales national football team until he retired from international football in 2004. He remains the most capped outfield player for Wales and the second overall, having appeared 85 times at senior level between 1990 and 2004, playing mainly as a left-side attacking midfielder. He started off his career in 1988 and retired in 2010. Speed was appointed manager of Sheffield United in 2010, but he left the club after a few months in December 2010 to manage the Wales national team.
Speed played professionally for Leeds United, Everton, Newcastle United, Bolton Wanderers and Sheffield United. Rarely troubled by injury or suspension, he held the record for the most appearances in the Premier League at 535, until it was surpassed by David James. At the time of his death, only James and Ryan Giggs had played in more Premier League matches than Speed. Including his appearances in The Football League and cup competitions, he made 840 domestic appearances, in addition to 85 full caps at international level. He played in the Leeds United team that won the Football League First Division championship in 1991–92, the year before the FA Premier League was formed. He also played in consecutive FA Cup finals for Newcastle United, losing to Arsenal in 1998 and to Manchester United in 1999.

Mary Gladstone
Mary Drew (née Gladstone; 23 November 1847–1 January 1927), was a political secretary, writer and hostess. She was the daughter of the British Prime Minister William Ewart Gladstone, and achieved notability as his advisor, confidante and private secretary. She also attained a fair degree of political influence by controlling access to him.
The Gladstones were a large and eccentric family. Mary's mother (née Catherine Glynne) and her mother's cousin, Lady Lyttelton, married on the same day in the same church, and often kept both families in the same house. Lord Lyttelton, Mary's uncle, recalled finding "seventeen children upon the floor, all under the age of twelve, and consequently all inkstands, books, carpets, furniture, ornaments, in intimate intermixture and in every form of fracture and confusion". In all, there were seven Gladstone and twelve Lyttelton children.

Michael James Owen (born 14 December 1979 in Chester) is an English professional footballer who is currently a free agent after being released by Manchester United in June 2012.
The son of former footballer Terry Owen, Owen began his senior career at Liverpool in 1996. He progressed through the Liverpool youth team and scored on his debut in May 1997. In his first full season in the Premier League he finished as joint top scorer with 18 goals. He repeated this the following year and was Liverpool's top goal scorer from 1997–2004, despite a recurring hamstring injury. In 2001, Liverpool won a cup treble of the UEFA Cup, FA Cup and Football League Cup, and Owen was the recipient of the Ballon d'Or. He went on to score 118 goals in 216 appearances in the Premier League for Liverpool.
Owen moved to Real Madrid for £8 million in mid-2004; he was frequently used as a substitute. He scored 13 goals in La Liga and had the season's highest ratio of goals scored to number of minutes played. He returned to England the following season, joining Newcastle United for £16 million. After a promising start to the 2005–06 season, injuries largely ruled him out over the next 18 months. After his return he became team captain and was the team's top scorer for the 2007–08 season. After the final season of his four-year contract, Newcastle were relegated, and Owen moved to Manchester United as a free agent.

Hawarden ⁱ/ˈhɑrdən/ (Welsh: Penarlâg) is a village in Flintshire, Wales. Hawarden forms part of the Deeside conurbation on the Welsh/English border. At the 2001 Census, the population of Hawarden Ward was 1,858 (892 males, 966 females).^[1] The total population for the greater community of Hawarden, which includes Ewloe, was 13,539.^[2]

Hawarden Airport is one of 2 public airfields in the north of Wales although services are intermittent, the second being at Caernarfon. Its primary function is to serve the Raytheon and BAE Systems aerospace factories in the adjacent village of Broughton, where Airbus manufacture the wings of the Airbus airliners before they are flown in a Beluga cargo aircraft to Bremen, Germany for equipping (A330/340 & A300 Wings) or Hamburg, Germany and Toulouse, France (A320 family wings) for final assembly of the complete aircraft. The wings of the Airbus A380 are too large to be flown out and are instead transported by barge down the River Dee, to the port of Mostyn.

Hawarden's most famous residents are Emma, Lady Hamilton (1761–1815), the former Prime Minister, William Ewart Gladstone (1809–1898), the curate of Hawarden the Rev. Harry Drew, and the professional footballer Michael Owen (b. 1979).

Prime minister William Ewart Gladstone (1809–1898) lived in Hawarden Castle, the home of his wife's family, the Glynnes. In 1886 the curate of Hawarden, the Rev. Harry Drew, married Mary Gladstone, the second daughter of the Prime Minister, at St. Margarets Church, Westminster - a society wedding attended by the Prince of Wales.^[3] Gladstone bequeathed his library, now known as Gladstone's Library (having been renamed from St. Deiniol's Library in 2010), to the town.

The professional footballer Michael Owen (b. 1979) who, although born a few miles away in Chester and thus eligible to play for England, was raised in Hawarden and lived a few miles away at Northop until his transfer to Real Madrid in the summer of 2004. He moved back to the area after transferring to Newcastle United and subsequently Manchester United, commuting by helicopter. Owen famously bought a small street of houses for his extended family in the adjacent village of Ewloe. He also owned a house in the area and grew up on Cromwell Close nearby.^[4]

Hawarden High School is a high school which dates back to 1606 and was attended not only by Michael Owen, but also Gary Speed, the former manager of the Wales national football team.

Hawarden is located near to Ewloe, Mancot and Broughton.

Edward White Benson was born in Highgate, Birmingham, the son of a Birmingham chemical manufacturer. He was educated at King Edward's School, Birmingham and Trinity College, Cambridge, where he graduated BA (8th classic) in 1852.^[2] Benson began his career as a schoolmaster at Rugby School in 1852, and was ordained deacon in 1852 and priest in 1857. In 1859 Benson was chosen by Prince Albert as the first Master (headmaster) of Wellington College, Berkshire, which had been built as the nation's memorial to the Duke of Wellington. Benson was largely responsible for establishing Wellington as a great English public school, closely modelled on Rugby School, rather than the military academy originally planned. He later served as Chancellor of Lincoln Cathedral from 1872–77, and first Bishop of Truro from 1877–82. He founded Truro High School for Girls^[3] in 1880.

While at Canterbury, to avoid the prosecution before a lay tribunal of Edward King, Bishop of Lincoln, under the Public Worship Regulation Act 1874 for six ritual offences he heard the case in his own archiepiscopal court which had been inactive since 1699. ^[4] In his judgement (often called "the Lincoln Judgement"), he found against the Bishop on two points, with a proviso as to a third that, when performing the manual acts during the prayer of consecration in the Holy Communion service, the priest must stand so that they can be seen by the people. Benson also tried to amalgamate the two Convocations and the new houses of laity into a single assembly. In 1896 it was established that they could 'unofficially' meet together.^[5]. In September of the same year, the papal apostolic letter Apostolicae Curae was published and Benson had started to work on a reply before his sudden death of a heart attack while attending Sunday service in St. Deiniol's Church, Hawarden, Wales on October 11, 1896 on a visit to former Prime Minister William Gladstone.

His great devotion to Cyprian bore posthumous fruit with the publication of Cyprian, his life, his times, his work the following year.^[6]

Legacy [link]

Benson is best remembered for devising the Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols, an order first used in Truro Cathedral on Christmas Eve, 1880. Considerably revised by Eric Milner White for King's College Cambridge, this service is now used every Christmas around the world.

Benson told Henry James a simple, rather inexpert story he had heard about the ghosts of evil servants who tried to lure young children to their deaths. James recorded the hint in his Notebooks and eventually used it as the starting-point for his classic ghost story, The Turn of the Screw.

Benson and his wife Mary Sidgwick Benson, the sister of philosopher Henry Sidgwick, had six children. Their fifth child was the novelist E. F. Benson. Another son was A. C. Benson, the author of the lyrics to Elgar's "Land of Hope and Glory" and master of Magdalene College, Cambridge. Their sixth and youngest child, Robert Hugh Benson, became a minister of the Church of England before converting to Catholicism and writing many popular novels. Their daughter Margaret Benson was an artist, author, and amateur Egyptologist. None of the children married; and some of them appeared to suffer from mental illnesses, probably bipolar disorder. After the archbishop's death, his widow set up household with Lucy Tait, daughter of the previous Archbishop of Canterbury, Archibald Campbell Tait.^[7]
